HELPING TO BUILD A FUTURE OF HOPE IN ETHIOPIA ON WORLD MISSIONSUNDAY: Ethiopia first hit the headlines in the 1980s when a devastating faminecaused the starvation of a million people. Thankfully, much has changed since thenbut despite the recent economic growth, Ethiopia remains one of the poorest countriesin the world.

World Mission Sunday is on 21 October 2018. Missio, the Pope’s official charity foroverseas mission, is appealing to the faithful of England and Wales to ‘help build afuture of hope’ in Ethiopia and around the world, through prayers and financialsupport.

Even though the Catholic Church comprises only one per cent of a population of 100million, many people benefit from the Church’s mission in Ethiopia. The Menja peopleare one of the ethnic groups the Church is reaching out to. They are a people sociallyexcluded and discriminated against due to their cultural traditions, which make them‘untouchable’ to the majority of the population in the south-eastern Kaffa region.

This social exclusion means that Menja adults struggle to find work and earn anincome. Simple things like feeding their families, having a home and providingclothing for their children is a daily struggle. The intolerance they face makes it verydifficult for Menja children to go to school and improve their prospects for a betterfuture.

The Little Sisters of Jesus have made it their mission to overcome the marginalisation, discrimination and hurt endured by the Menja, by living alongside the Menja families.

Sr Karlo is one of the Little Sisters of Jesus serving the Menja people.

‘Everyone looks down upon the Menja people as poor, uneducated and sociallyuntouchable’, she says. ‘We Sisters live among them and proclaim the Gospel by ourliving. We invite them to our house and welcome them as friends. They are notrecognised as human beings by the people here...’

She says: ‘I find Jesus in them; they are a kind people and have a lot to teach us. Theyare the ones who will decide about following Jesus. We are here only to show thepower of His love.’

Through Missio, the Pope’s official charity for overseas mission, you can support menand women like Sr Karlo, who choose to reach out across cultural and geographicalboundaries to those who have little hope for the future.

World Mission Sunday is one of the most special days in our global Church, unitingCatholics all over the world through prayer and practical support. To find out more, please visit www.missio.org.uk.

There is a SECOND COLLECTION THIS SUNDAY for Missio. Please also remember tobring your APF Missio Red Boxes back to the church for emptying during October.

A FUTURE FULL OF HOPE - The Year of MissionTwenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary TimeJesus, in Mark’s Gospel, reveals himself as the one who serves, as the one whoreaches out in tenderness, as the one who lowers himself and empties himself outof love for others. It’s Jesus’ words and his actions that reveal to the disciples theneed, not so much to be the first or the greatest or the most powerful or the best orthe most successful, but to encounter God in others and serve God, love God, inthem. The disciples find that a hard lesson to learn but they have Jesus, not just toinstruct them, but to show them. The cross reveals that service and that emptyingin action. If we want to be considered great it’s not because we have trampled oneveryone to get where we feel we need to be; it’s that we have loved and loved andloved…giving everything.
