MISSIONARY VISITMISSIONARY VISIT

PRIEST RETREATPRIEST RETREAT Our priests will be away this week for the annual di-ocesan priest retreat. Unfortunately we were unable to find available priests this year. Therefore, there will be no Confessions or daily Mass from Monday, October 4th through Friday, October 8th.

This weekend we will have an annual Mission Appeal in our parish. This year the holy Mass and homily will be celebrated by a priest from the Missionaries of St. Francis, otherwise known as the Fransalians. Although their congregation was founded in Annecy, France in 1837, as missionaries, their major presence is now in Asia and Africa along with new missions in South America. They are now globally present in 29 counties with 12 provinces, one region and four delegations with total membership of more than 1500 confreres. Their main missionary charism is the pioneering evangelization in the non-evangelized countries and the education of the less privileged youth through children’s homes and or-phanages. More then 3500 economically poor, semi orphan or orphan children are cared for and educated in their 93 children’s homes both in India and Africa. The Fransalians are also active in the Philippines, Ecuador, Indonesia and Brazil where they promote and train missionary vocations to prepare individuals for both pioneering evangelization and the renewal of Christian life in different countries and are actively engaged in the empowerment of women and the marginalized. Let us welcome our missionary, Fr. Tomy Joseph, MSFS

We are in need of additional regular adorers who can commit at least one hour a week to spend time with our Lord during Wednesday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. If you are available to sign up for one or more Holy Hour between 8 am and 6 pm on Wednes-days, please contact Mary Johnston via e-mail at: [email protected]

Doxology

The word “doxology” comes from the Greek “doxa” which means “glory”. Doxology, therefore, means glorification. Each celebration of the Mass has this function of praise, of blessing, and of glorification. However, the Eucharistic Prayer is the heart of this liturgy. The Prayer begins with the preface, lifting our hearts up to the Father. Then comes the Sanctus, proclaiming God’s holiness and glory that fills the universe. At the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest recites this concluding doxology, praising the Trinity. In this prayer, the priest elevates the Sacred Victim up high, above all temporal realities, and says: “Through Him, with Him and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.” The Church believes in the mediation of Christ alone and His supreme Priesthood. Only “through Him, with Him and in Him” can we reach the Father. “No one comes to the Father except through me.” (Jn 14:6) We know that our deeds are pleasing to God through Christ. Our lives united to His life, to His death and to His resurrection, are glory and honor to the Trinity. The Church exists to glorify God: this is precisely why the priestly Christian people have congregated together – to elevate toward God, in the Eucharist, the maximum praise possible and to gain, on behalf of all humanity, countless material and spiritual goods. This is why the Eucharist is where the Church completely manifests and expresses herself. Now is a good time to point out the fact that the active participation of the faithful does not consist in reciting together with the priest this doxological prayer. According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, “The concluding doxology of the Eucharistic Prayer is spoken solely by the principal priest celebrant and, if this is desired, together with the other concelebrants, but not by the faithful.” (GIRM, 236)

The Christian people make the Eucharistic Prayer their own and complete the great Trinitarian Doxology by saying “Amen.” It is the most solemn Amen of the Mass. In the third century, the principal privileges of the Christian people were listed as: hearing the Eucharistic Prayer, pronouncing the Amen and receiving the Divine Bread. With this ‘Amen’, the faithful ratify the holy Sacrifice of the Mass. St. Augustine says, “To say ‘Amen’ means to endorse.” Even up through the Carolingian dynasty, the last words of the Canon were not spoken in silence so that the people could respond ‘Amen’ out loud. The word ‘Amen’ is possibly the principal acclamation of the Christian liturgy. The term ‘Amen’ proceeds from the Old Covenant: "The Levites shall proclaim aloud to all the men of Israel... And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'” (Dt 27:15-26; 1 Cron 16:36; Neh 8:6). According to different contexts, ‘Amen’ means: “This is it, this is the truth, so be it”. The ancient ‘Amen’ continues to resound in the new covenant. It is the characteristic acclamation of the ce-lestial liturgy. (Rev 3:14; 5:14, 7:11-12; 19:4) In Christian tradition, it conserves all of its ancient expressive vigor. (1 Cor 14:16; 2 Cor 1:20). As in the whole liturgy, saying ‘Amen’ has a vital meaning. It shouldn’t be a mere response with the lips, but rather, it has the value of uniting us to the mystery that we celebrate. Saying ‘Amen’ means uniting ourselves with Christ, desiring to make our whole life a doxology, that is, a glorification of the Trinity, united to the Paschal mystery of the Redeemer.

An essential part of the Christian vocation is to be “the praise of His glory”. Once again we see how the liturgy should be lived. A summary of the glory of creation in Christ is found in the doxology. Through His obedience and love even unto the Cross, Christ has carried out the perfect glorification of the Father: “Father, glorify your Name” (Jn 17:5), and has achieved the perfect glorification of His humanity, united to the Incarnate Word: “Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began.” (Jn 17:5) We must unite ourselves, with our lives, to this glorification of the Trinity. Uniting ourselves to Christ, offering our whole life with Him, joys and pains, success and failure, work and everything that we do, we will become praise of the glory of the Trinity “through Him, with Him and in Him.”

Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints

At Mass—WE SAY AMEN “No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 The word Doxology means “great praise of God.” Following the Mystery of Faith, we hear the priest sing the Doxology, saying “Through Him, with Him and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, al-mighty Father, for ever and ever.” This pro-claims that it is only through Jesus that God can save us. The Holy Spirit brings us the grace to choose God’s love through Jesus’ sacrifice. After this great Doxology, we all reply with the Great Amen! Amen means, “I agree!” We agree to the statement of praise that we seek Je-sus!

SAINTS OF THE WEEKSAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, October 3: Bl. Columba Marmion—Abbot Bl. Columba Marmion was born Joseph Aloysius Marmion in Dublin, Ireland on April 1, 1858. He en-tered the seminary in 1874 and was ordained a priest on June 16, 1881. He served for several years as a parish priest, then became a seminary professor and a chaplain at a Redemptorist convent. In 1886 he decided to enter the monastic life at the Benedictine Abbey of Maredsous in Belgium where he took the name Columba. He helped found the Mont César Abbey in Leuven, Belgium where he served as prior, spiritual director, professor of theology and finally he was elected abbot. He remained in the role of ab-bot for the rest of his life.

Monday, October 4: St. Petronius—Bishop St. Petronius was born to a Roman noble family in Gaul sometime during the late fourth century. His father was a praetorian prefect named Petronius. It is believed that Petronius himself was also a Roman official. As a young man he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and was inspired to devote his life to Christ. He became a priest and was chosen bishop of Bologna in 432. During his reign, Petronius worked to rebuild churches and other religious edifices that were destroyed by the Goths, and he also constructed the monastery of St. Stephen.

Tuesday, October 5: St. Flora—Virgin and Mystic St. Flora was born in Auvergne, France in 1309. She was strong in her faith since she was a young child and re-sisted multiple attempts to enter into marriage pressed by her parents. In 1324 Flora joined the Priory of Beaulieu and became a Hospitaller nun of St. John of Jerusalem. She was treated poorly by her fellow sisters and fell into depression. Flora soon began to experience mystical occurrences. She developed a gift for prophesy, entered a state of ecstasy and went for weeks without food, was found in one instance floating four feet above the ground, and was also seen with markings of the Lord’s Passion and blood flowing from her arms. Despite these miracu-lous events, and the attention they drew, Flora never lost her humility and holiness.

Wednesday, October 6: Bl. Isidore of Saint Joseph—Confessor Bl. Isidore was born to a farming family in Vrasene, Belgium on April 13, 1881. As a young boy he enjoyed spending time laboring in his family’s fields. He entered the Passionist Congregation in Ere as a lay brother and made his vows on September 13, 1908. Isidore was known for living a life of prayer and penance, his dedication to labor and his charity. He developed a tumor in 1911 which resulted in the necessary removal of his right eye. His cancer continued to worsen and he passed away on October 6, 1916.

Thursday, October 7: St. Osyth—Abbess and Martyr St. Osyth was born sometime during the seventh century to a noble family, the daughter of a Mer-cian chieftain. Osyth was raised in a convent and felt called to become a nun, however she was pushed into an arranged marriage against her wishes to King Sighere of Essex, with whom she had a son. She was able to obtain the permission of her husband to leave the marriage and enter a convent which she began on land given to her by Sighere. She served as abbess of the convent until she was murdered by Danish raiders who cut off her head.

Friday, October 8: St. Thais—Penitent St. Thais was a wealthy Christian woman born in Alexandria, Egypt around the fourth century who fell into the sin of prostitution. Many men were said to have been struck with her beauty and engaged in bloody fights to win her favor. Word of this matter reached a monk, St. Paphnutius of Thebes, who posed as a customer to speak with Thais and bring about her conversion. Thais was converted, and she proceeded to publicly burn all of her worldly goods. She was then sent to live in a monastic cell at a convent where she spent the next three years of her life in solitude practicing extreme penances. At the decision of St. Anthony, she was released from her cell. Thais passed away fifteen days later.

Saturday, October 9: St. John Leonardi—Confessor St. John Leonardi was born in Diecimo, Italy in 1541. After becoming a pharmacist assistant, he decided to prepare for the priesthood, and was ordained in 1572. Following ordination, he became active in hospital and prison ministry, where he gained the following of several young men who would also become priests. With these priests, John founded the Clerks Regular of the Mother of God. John was driven out from Lucca, where he was residing, but he was given housing by St. Philip Neri. In 1579, he founded the Confraternity of Christian doctrine, who sought the redemption of sinners and to promote the reforms promoted by the Council of Trent. John passed away on Oct. 9, 1609 after becoming sick while caring for people affected by the plague.

BECOME A PARISHIONERBECOME A PARISHIONER

HOW TO REGISTER AS A PARISHIONER

To register as a parishioner of the Cathedral, please visit www.stpatricks.org/join or scan the QR code to the right, and complete the simple online form. Alternatively, paper registration forms are located near each of the entrances of the Cathedral.

Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re-quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we look upon them in relation to parish membership. ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial con-tribution or donates online.

RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third and fourth precept of the Church state that the faithful must ensure prepa-ration for the Eucharist by the reception of the Sacrament of Penance at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Com-munion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and to join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their abili-ties in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.
