In 1952, Rocky Mountain National Park hired Ferrel Atkins as a seasonal Ranger Naturalist. With little experience in the natural sciences but with a Ph. D. in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky, Atkins quickly adjusted to the topics and topography of Rocky Mountain National Park. Working each summer between 1952 through 1984, Atkins spent many hours in the park's library diligently researching the rich history of the park and surrounding areas. During his tenure, Atkins lead interpretive hiking and horseback tours, slide programs, alpine and photo caravans, fishing demonstrations, and occasionally assisted with law enforcement duties. From 1986 until 2009, Atkins returned to the park as a volunteer. Atkins passed away in September 2011.

Scope This collection contains materials written or collected by Ferrel Atkins, Seasonal Interpretive Ranger. The collection features reports written by Atkins including a Historic Sites and Building Survey on Fern Lake Lodge; assembled documentation includes bibliographies, narratives, photographs, slides, photocopies of portions of topographic maps, and floor plans related to park historic structures; oral histories and interviews materials conducted by Atkins or other park staff and/or biographical information; and correspondence, pamphlets, photographs, postcards, newspapers and clippings, and reports collected by Atkins for various research interests and projects.
