Now that I’ve returned from Guatemala and El Salvador, what do I take away? I have had a little time to ponder this – and here are some thoughts: (to be continued next week) 1. The church needs to be authentic and vibrant. When our weekly rich expressions and experiences become routine and we fall into a rut, people drift away – they stop finding value. This is especially true here in the U.S., where distractions abound. What we need to experience and foster is a living relationship with the Lord! And that means a tangible and noticeable response. This is not a new conviction, but it was part of the story in Latin America when church leadership sometimes failed to stand with the poor, where Jesus dwells. 2. When situations become seemingly hopeless, the people didn’t just give up. Here’s where the cultural strength of these folks really shows – the character of the people of El Salvador and Guatemala is to always look to a better future. And, that is something we need to revere (and adopt for ourselves who have become jaded and numb). 3. One great attribute is shared by the martyrs about whom we learned – they were “with the people.” Oscar Romero, Rutilio Grande, Ita Ford, Maura Clarke, Dorothy Kazel, Jean Donovan, Stanley Rother, the Jesuit professors of the University of Central America – found their joy and indeed their lives intertwined with the lives of people (mostly dirt poor) with whom they shared such a loving relationship. 4. At the Sunday Mass we celebrated two weeks ago in Santiago Atitlán, the readings (in Spanish) hit me very hard (I read along in English) – Isaiah 49 – the Servant of God (which Fr Stan, authentically lived out) and Psalm 40, “Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will!” He faithfully lived this Word – what a witness (“martyr”)! There had been no seminarians from the parish in over 400 years, but since their pastor had been killed – several have been ordained and many more have enrolled in seminary studies! “The blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church,” said Tertullian (160-240 AD). Fr. John

Last Weekend’s Sacrificial Giving

Thank you SSJ: We Thank the Sisters of St. Joseph of NW PA for their recent gift of $1,100 to the Eastside Partnered Parish (St. John the Baptist and Holy Rosary) Food Pantry. Through the generosity of donors to the SSJ Annual Thanksgiving Fund Appeal, the sisters were able to provide and serve over 800 Thanksgiving meals and still had money left over. They further share from that fund with others who support feeding the hungry and needy. Their monetary gift allows us to extend our mutual ministry of serving people in need. Funding of our food pantry is provided by parishioners and organizations of The Partnered Parishes of St. John the Baptist and Holy Rosary through both monetary and food donations.

Child Protection and Creating Safe Environments: February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Teen dating violence is a serious problem in the United States. One in three high school students experience either physical or sexual violence, or both, that is perpetrated by someone they are dating or going out with. One in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend. Teen dating violence can be physical, emotional or sexual. Teen dating violence can be prevented through empowering teens to lead healthy lives and establish healthy relationships. Healthy relationships consist of trust, honesty, respect, equality and compromise. Visit https://www.eriercd.org/childprotection/ to see what the diocese is doing to help maintain safe environments for children and youth. Bishop Persico has opened the cause for Canonization of Dr. Gertrude Barber: Monsignor Thomas McSweeney, former director of the Office of Evangelization for Communications, has been named as diocesan postulator for the cause, and will help guide the association through the first steps of the investigations. Those interested in providing testimony concerning Dr. Barber can arrange for an interview with him at 814.878.5953 or email him at [email protected]
