ince the beginning, Red Horse Mountain Ranch has been a vacation getaway and retreat for those who starve for the

spirit of adventure, relaxation, and friendly western hospitality. The Ranch has a rich history of dude ranching in Idaho since 1947 and the same traditions of the western experience live today. In 2009, the Ranch will celebrate the conclusion to a long journey, as Red Horse becomes Idaho’s newest member of the National Dude Ranchers’ Association. As many families and guests have known for some time, Red Horse Mountain Ranch is now recognized nationally as one of the few grand dude ranch experiences.

Working on a dude ranch is about sharing the West, a simple world that is dictated by the seasons and the cycle of life. Your appreciation of nature, family, and friends will be renewed. You’ll find that adventure, good food and good friends will leave you peaceful and content. You’ll discover the luxuries of silence, the wind on your face and the stars shining brightly. More than just a day full of activities, the essence of a ranch vacation nourishes your heart and soul. You’ll see children blossom and you’ll find a peace that takes away your typically daily grind. It is unlike any vacation you have ever taken ~ one that you will return to time and again and one that you’ll all remember for years to come. I hope you’ll give us the opportunity to show you our little slice of heaven in Idaho and come celebrate our new membership into the National Dude Ranchers’ Association.

Hope to see you on the trails.

The All Inclusive Ranch Vacation

Red Horse Mountain Ranch began serving guests in 2005 when the long-time Idaho family from Boise, the Terteling Family, purchase the ranch. Terteling Company has been a supporter of important conservation concerns like the Peregrine Fund, who today continues conservation on the California Condor and other birds of prey. The Terteling Company donated a region near Boise to honor our Idaho military veterans with an Idaho state cemetery, giving peace and comfort to the men and women who want - and richly deserve - to be remembered.

! %!Horseback Riding Adventures At Red Horse Mountain Ranch the horse is front and center. We start by matching you with one of our horses. Each day on the ranch, riders will have at least two opportunities for western style horseback riding. Kids program will have a morning horseback ride, but if families would like to ride together, there are afternoon family rides scheduled throughout the week, but not everyday. Before you arrive, the Barn Manager will be scheduling you with a horse and saddle during your entire stay. Your horse will be chosen for you based on the information you have provided on your Rider’s Information Form. All guests will be asked to complete an orientation and walking ride during the first day of their vacation, unless they are returning guests. This gives our wranglers a chance to orient you to the barn and give you a chance to meet your horse and make any adjustments to your saddle and riding equipment for the week.

Scenic Horseback Rides You'll have 300,000 acres, miles of trails, a knowledgeable wrangler, a trusty horse, and the ability to go wherever your skills can take you! Every morning the wranglers have your horse saddled and waiting for you when you decide to ride. The wranglers will make sure you are comfortable and properly equipped before you get on your horse. If you need a few pointers, don't hesitate to ask your wrangler for a little help. Please remember that your safety and the horses' safety are always kept in mind. We have a variety of riding trails, all of which leave the valley floor and climb into the surrounding mountains. Enjoy riding through pastures, along wide trails, on open hillsides and through narrow, wooded paths. We recommend you bring your camera. Each scenic trail ride will last between 2-4 hours. All Day Horseback Rides The All Day Ride lasts between 5-8 hours. You will experience the backwoods, creek basins and breathtaking views from ridgelines. The chef will prepare a pack lunch for you to take on your trip. Be prepared for this ride. Wearing a hat and sunglasses to shade your face is highly recommended. Wear layers; the weather may not be the same atop the ridges as it is down in the valley. Typically, most all day rides climb and descend a total of 8,000 feet in elevation. Family Horseback Rides Family horseback rides give parents with kids 6 and over a chance to ride together while at the ranch. The wranglers will make sure you and your children are comfortable and properly equipped. Family rides are also at the discretion of the wrangler. Family rides are usually shorter than most rides for the sake of the children. Advanced Horseback Rides are at the discretion of the wrangler. We make sure you, and your horse, are ready for the experience of a kicking it up a notch. Even an accomplished rider will tell you that every horse is different and it takes a little time for you to meet. Cantering and trotting is very much part of our day, but most important is your safety. Talk with your experienced wranglers if you could use a few pointers to advance your trail riding experience! The Advanced ride is a combination of walking, trotting, and cantering and is absolutely exhilarating. All riders wishing to do the Advanced Ride, regardless of riding experience, will be asked to be tested by our wranglers prior. A wrangler’s review cannot be interpreted as an endorsement into one’s ability to ride safely, but you’ll be asked to perform changes in gates, turning right and left, stopping, and other advanced horse and rider controls. The Advanced Rides are only available in the mornings since typical afternoon heat during the summer is too warm for the horses to do advanced riding. For riders who wish to do more riding, we recommend our Rider’s Weeks.

Horseback Riding Policies: Due to recent information regarding horseback riding safety, horseback riding is only available to riders under 240 pounds or they must have an athletic build. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact the Cory Inouye, Ranch Manager at (888) 689-9680.

! &!Guided Adventures at Red Horse Mountain Ranch

Challenge Course and Climbing Wall The challenge course is unlike any other experience you will have while on vacation at Red Horse Mountain Ranch. We take great pride in having our staff and course nationally certified. There truly is something for everyone, and we practice what we call “challenge by choice.” This means that you choose to participate in only the elements that you feel comfortable doing.

3D Archery Our guides will take you through a forested archery course. Our targets vary from life like turkeys, elk and even a mountain lion. We'll provide you with a bow and a quiver full of arrows; you just bring your sense of adventure. Here you can shoot life-size targets hiding just off the trail, at a variety of distances and challenging angles. Kayaking Tours The kayaking tours are exceptional half-day adventures through the chain lakes of North Idaho. The tours can provide relaxing experiences, during which you may enjoy the tranquility of kayaking and how easily a kayak slices through the water.

Hiking at the Ranch If fitness is not your primary concern or you would just like to experience the trails by foot, you may sign-up for a Scenic Hike. If guests are signed-up for the Scenic Hike by 9 PM the preceding evening, we will provide a guide. The guide will lead you out onto the trails and ensure your safe return to the ranch. Since the lodge is near the valley floor you ought to expect some hills, but we will aim to capture the views without stretching your physical abilities.

Sporting Clays Our guides will instruct you on how to use instinctive shooting to hit your clay target. Following the footsteps of the age-old European Sporting Clays, you’ll have a chance to shoot from a variety of angles. Try your hand at the duck tower, the quail, the pheasant flush, the running rabbit and teal. Mountain Biking Our mountain biking trails are an exhilarating ride through the Idaho Panhandle National Forest on

selected off road trails that offer novice and advanced riders great vistas and overlooks of the Coeur d’Alene Mountains. Trails are mostly single track, and you’ll be traveling by shuttle to the trailhead where you will ride through forests and across ridgelines. The trails will include creeks bottoms, mountainsides, as well as

sustained uphill and downhill sections. Private Fishing Pond The fishing pond is stocked with 12 to 24 inch trout ranging in size from1/2 to over 5 pounds. You can try your luck with a fly rod or conventional fishing tackle provided for you at the pond.

Thompson or Anderson Kayak and Fish Thompson and Anderson Lake are part of the chain lakes of the Couer d'Alene River system and are located on the south side of the Red Horse Mountain Ranch. This trip can be scheduled 1 day in advance and anglers are required to have a valid Idaho fishing license, which can be purchased at the Trading Post. This guided fishing trip will be done by kayak.

full week program is available from Memorial Weekend through Labor Day Weekend for children

age three to twelve. Run by a certified teacher, our kids program is designed for excitement, learning, empowerment, and building self-esteem. The Kid’s Program activities include a morning horseback ride, and afternoon activities such as high ropes and challenge course, kayaking tours, plinking, bike rides, and many other ranch activities. Kids are dear to the ranch’s heart and during the summer, parents will be surprisingly comforted to spend time on their own while the children have a week of amazing adventure.

Horseback riding inherently offers lessons in focus, assertiveness and self-awareness. Through horseback riding, your children will learn to feel relaxed and in control of their horse. Children ages 3 years and up can normally join the kids trail ride. Regardless of age, your child will have a well-rounded horseback riding experience by the end of a few days and feel empowered with self-esteem. For the adventurous and more experienced buckaroos, they have the opportunity to join Mom and Dad for a grand family horseback ride.

The rest of their stay will include archery, challenge course and climbing wall, games, treasure hunts, and other brilliantly designed programs. Our counselors provide special activities including nature awareness, arts and crafts, campfire programs, story telling, and cookouts.

During their stay, kids are also well thought of when it comes to building meals. Kids will be delighted that our chefs have also considered their desires when it comes to meals, albeit with a healthy and full flavored twist that parents will appreciate.

Children, ages 3-11, are able to participate in most of the activities that adults can do, albeit at their pace.

Costs for the whitewater trips are approximately $115/person. This is an all day trip and departures from the ranch will occur between 6:30 am (Clark Fork River) and 7:30 am (St. Joe River). Arrivals back at the ranch between are typically between 5:00 pm (St. Joe River) and 7:30 pm (Clark Fork River). Lunch will be provided during your tripi. For more information on this trip, please contact Heidi Smith or Jody Mitchell for more information at (888) 689-9680. Fly Fishing Float or Walk & Wade Trips Float fishing trips or walk and wade trips can be arranged during your stay at the ranch, however, we recommend pre-booking your guide because of availability. The float and walk & wade trips on the St. Joe River are full day adventures departing from the ranch after breakfast and returning at the discretion of the angler and guide. Arriving prior to dinner can be arranged. The St. Joe River is classified as a Wild and Scenic Waterway and is strictly catch and release flyfishing for cutthroat trout, although there are some rainbow trout as well. Anglers should come prepared with waders and boots for the walk and wade trips. Float fishing does not require waders but it is recommended during the months of late May and June, or September and October. Lunches are included on your fly fishing trips and all transportation to and from the river will be handled by your guide.

Water. Activities at Red Horse Mountain Ranch are an exciting and fun way to spend a vacation. Its important to stay well hydrated. We’ll take care of the little buckaroos while on a trail, but adults should come prepared with a water bottle or a hydration pack. Complimentary bottles will be in your room when you arrive.

Sunglasses and a Cowboy Hat: To shade and protect your eyes as well as protect you from any branches that might be on the trail while horseback riding.

Flashlight: It’s a good idea to have extra flashlights as the Ranch keeps all exterior lights dimmed to let the millions of stars shine through at night.

Sunscreen, a bathing suit, and a good book

Layers and/or a Jacket: The nights can be cool, but that will not stop us from providing you with our evening entertainment. A good fleece jacket is perfect most of the time and a favorite with the guests is a fleece vest. During the shoulder seasons, long underwear might be a wise choice to pack. Typically, our part of the Rocky Mountains will have a daily temperature swing between lows and highs of about 40 degrees. %

Bicycle Shorts: To protect your back 40 while on mountain bikes. Guests have also commented that bicycle shorts are nice to wear during the horseback riding too.

Slick Soled Boots: Not too many items are mandatory but good riding boots are. We do provide a selection of good used boots at the Tack Barn if you prefer to use ours.!

Helmets: We highly recommend you wear protective gear while participating in the Mountain biking, Bike Tours, and the Challenge course; in these activities it is mandatory. Helmets are actually very hip with the kids. We will provide helmets to anyone. We also have horseback riding helmets, which are required for the kids age 6 through 14. For those whom are older, you can opt to not wear a helmet during the horseback riding.

Jeans and other clothing. Bring a few pairs of jeans with you for the horseback riding. Summer clothing is usually perfect to keep you casual, cool, and comfortable. Please remember that there is a daily laundry service so if you need to pack light, please do so. Our staff will be happy to take care of you.

Idaho’s Weather

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is well known for its mild temperatures. However, we still are in Idaho at the base of the Rocky Mountain range. We recommend coming prepared for temperature and weather fluctuations. If you have any questions, please contact the Ranch for current weather patterns. But as we say in Idaho, if you don’t like the weather, give it about 5 minutes.

Horseback Riding

Each day on the ranch, riders will have at least two opportunities for western style horseback riding. Kids program will have a morning horseback ride, but if families would like to ride together, there are afternoon family rides scheduled throughout the week, but not everyday. More often than not, there are specific Kid’s Program afternoon activities that kids do not want to miss, such as the Challenge Course, Kid’s Bike Tour, or the Kid’s boat tour. Before you arrive, the Barn Manager will be scheduling you with a horse and saddle during your entire stay. Your horse will be chosen for you based on the information you have provided on your Rider’s Information Form. A morning ride after breakfast will arrive back at the ranch before lunch, and the second ride will depart after lunch and return back to the ranch prior to dinner.

There are two main type of available rides; a scenic walking ride or a loping, or Advanced Ride.

All guests will be asked to complete an orientation and walking ride during the first day of their vacation, unless they are returning guests. This gives our wranglers a chance to orient you to the barn and give you a chance to meet your horse and make any adjustments to your saddle and riding equipment for the week.

On certain days of the week, an all day ride is also available. You’ll be headed towards one of the stunning views from a nearby peak around the ranch. A lunch will be made for you to take in your saddle bags and you will return back to the ranch in the mid-afternoon. The All-Day Rides are approximately 6 hours in length. %

! *&!Horses, Hats, & Hospitality since 1946 What is considered Red Horse Mountain Ranch today has had a rich history of being an important part of the guest ranches in Idaho since 1946. The same tradition of celebrating life and the western experience lives today. The ranch was purchased by a long-time Idaho company with roots starting in Potlatch, Idaho. The Terteling Company has been a supporter of important conservation concerns like the Peregrine Fund, who today continues conservation on the California Condor. The Terteling Company donated a region near Boise to honor our Idaho military veterans with a state cemetery, giving peace and comfort to the men and women who want - and richly deserve - to be remembered. Today, the ranch manager is Cory Inouye. He and his family live on the ranch year 'round. Cory grew up in Idaho, working for a number of it's top outfitters and manufacturers of recreational equipment. This Ranch has been family owned for nearly a half century. We do our best to make our guests feel at home just as others have done before us. It provides the perfect environment for you and your family to become closer together in a western surrounding. Get to know your wife, husband and children. In the late 1800's, what is known now as the Red Horse Mountain Ranch was first homesteaded by the Nederhood family. John Nederhood married Myrtle Wilbur on April 20, 1904. He had taken 160 acres as a homestead, but did not call his wife and children to come to the ranch until the home was completed. They had five years of happy married life together and three children: Maude, Albert, and Oliver. Then John became ill and passed away from quick consumption. John was only 36 when he passed away. By luck, the Jenicek family moved in a short time after, taking the homestead closer towards the present day Lodge and became good friends with the Nederhood Family. As the Janecik and Nederhood family moved on to other parts of Idaho, the homesteads were sold to John and Gladys Jones. Gladys and John Jones moved into their new Model Log House on April 26th, 1953, which is the present day Homestead on the ranch. As the years go on, a little more land is cleared or purchased, and Hereford Cattle are raised and summered on the surrounding National Forest Lands. It is here that their sons, Lloyd and Evan, and their wives, three grandchildren and many friends gather for visits and enjoy Gladys's good meals and the Jone's hospitality. Lloyd and his wife Rowena purchased another 320 acres and began the idea of a dude ranch in 1946. In the late 1950's they added another 2100 acres of property with a partner named Paul Sievert. It was the first an only guest ranch in North Idaho for some time. The Jones also had their home ranch, which was not in the partnership with Sievert. Albie Wells of Santa Rosa, California purchased Timber Ridge Ranch in about 1974. Stan and Lise Gootrad managed the ranch for him. Gene and Dorothy Davis worked there from 1974-78. Timber Ridge included the 160 acre Nederhood homestead. At the time the Bar BQ ranch was also operating and guests from Timber Ridge would watch roping demonstrations at their arena by Gene, Lloyd and Lonnie Jones. A brochure of the time said that accommodations at Timber Ridge Ranch are a rare blend of luxurious comfort and Old West authenticity. Large portions of today’s improvements on the ranch were done in 1992 by Iris Behr & John Muir, who named the ranch, Hidden Creek Ranch. John and Iris still keep in touch, but have moved on to beautiful Colorado where they enjoy hiking, riding and traveling to see old friends. Iris Behr and John Muir shared their love for horseback riding and the great outdoors in an unspoiled environment surrounded by the beauty of nature. Through the course of time, the Ranch has had thousands of people whom have either worked or visited this beautiful setting. As part of the rich history and story of Idaho, the Ranch has become a fond memory of countless vacations. Along with once again being a national member of the Dude Ranch Industry, Red Horse Mountain Ranch continues a long time tradition of horses, hats, and western hospitality.
