Page 14: Raise May/June09

MND is a rapidly progressive, fatal disease. It attacks the motor neurones that send messages from the brain to the muscles, leaving people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves, but their intellect usually remains unaected.

Around 5,000 people in the UK have MND at any one time. With no known cure half die within 14 months of diagnosis.

The MND Association funds and promotes research to bring about an end to MND. Until then, we are doing all that we can to enable everyone living with MND to receive the best care, achieve the highest quality of life possible, and die with dignity. We are also doing all that we can to support the families and carers of people living with MND.

We rely almost entirely on voluntary donations, fundraising events and legacies to undertake our vital work, and greatly appreciate every gift that we receive.

Five years ago the introduction of MND Association Tribute Funds was planned as a low-key aair. But friends, relatives and colleagues of people who were living with MND or who had died from the disease, embraced the new concept wholeheartedly. They saw Tribute Funds as a great way to raise money in honour of loved ones and help us in our work at the same time.

When Sheila Sutheran, a bubbly and quick-witted mother of four grown-up children died from MND in 2008, her children decided to set up a fund in her honour. To get the Tribute Fund o to a great start, all four siblings: brothers Neil, Ian and Alan Sutheran and sister Lynne Dutton decided to sign up for the MND Association’s Challenge to Machu Picchu in September this year. Between them the Hartlepool family aim to raise over £12,000 from this high-altitude trek in Peru.

Naturally, many of our Tribute Funds are set up by people directly aected by MND, like the Sutherans, but this is not essential. MND can strike anyone at any time. We welcome support from everyone who shares our vision of a world free of MND and who may wish to set up a Tribute Fund to help support our vital research programme and support services.

We welcome support from everyone who shares our vision of a world free of MND and who may wish to set up a Tribute Fund to help support our vital research programme and support services.

interview with a fundraiser

Tell us about your group? Our group consists of members of theWylam and District Churches. In 2006we were inspired by a long-termWaterAid supporter among us tofundraise for the charity as anexpression of our commitment to theMillennium Development Goals foralleviating world poverty. In the firstyear we raised funds for water, sanitation and hygiene projects in Mali. There were several hundred poundsleft over from that effort, so early in2008 the Churches decided to put ittowards another project, and a groupof volunteers from the congregationsformed into a committee.

How did you get involvedwith WaterAid?I found WaterAid’s literature andwebsite very informative and soonbecame an enthusiastic advocate for

the cause. I volunteered to join thecommittee and offered to handlecorrespondence and disseminateinformation among the Churches.

How have you raisedmoney for the charity? We started by joining in the Lent Appeal- Jars of Change for Jars of Water - askingchurch members to collect coins in ajam jar whenever they used water. Sincethen we’ve organised walks, ‘Coast toCoast’ cycle rides, sponsored swims, coffee mornings, and last September wetook part in WaterAid’s Harvest Appeal.

How did your group helpthe appeal? We held a WaterAid weekend, where

on the Saturday we put on a ‘SplashingOut’ event with morning coffee, a souplunch, a number of well-stocked stallsand outdoor watery games for thechildren. Then on the Sunday we helda united Harvest Service on the themeof God’s Gift of Water, and the offeringwas given to WaterAid’s work.

Did your community getinvolved too?Yes, our wider community got involvedin several ways. Our public events werewell supported and local businessesdonated substantial raffle prizes at the‘Splashing Out’ event. We were alsokeen to involve local schools inlearning about WaterAid’s work, so ateacher at Prudhoe High Schoolra

enabled some older pupils to prepareand serve a salad lunch and homebaking in the Parish Church Hall.

Would you encourageother groups to getinvolved in the appeal?Certainly. WaterAid supplies a wealthof attractively presented information, support and encouragement. It hasbeen demanding work at times but wefound that fundraising ideas flowedand enthusiasm blossomed. It wasincredibly rewarding that from ourefforts people would be able to haveclean, safe water and lead better lives.

How much did you raisefor WaterAid?Our total was £7865, which was waybeyond our expectations.

Where does the moneyyou raise go?WaterAid helps the world’s poorestcommunities plan, build and maintainsafe water and sanitation projects. Thecharity also campaigns to change policiesand practices, enabling more peopleto access these essential services.

It must mean a lot thatyour group can help sucha good cause? It has been immensely satisfying toour group that we can come togetherand help such a good cause. We havelearned a lot about WaterAid’s workand are very thankful for what wehave been able to achieve. We hopethat people will be inspired tocontinue to support WaterAid.

Including WaterAid in your Will could be the most amazing gift youever give. Safe, clean water is one of life’s essentials. When it iscombined with sanitation and hygiene education, it releases peoplefrom the cycle of poverty and disease, forever. There are three maintypes of legacies. You can give a share of your estate, a specific sum ofmoney or a specific item. Of these gifts, a share of an estate (residuarylegacy) is very important to the charity as it usually maintains orincreases value over time.0845 6000 433www.wateraid.org

Tell us about Dogs Trust?Dogs Trust is the largest dog welfare charity in the UK, andwe care for over 16,000 lost and abandoned dogs each yearthrough our nationwide network of 17 rehoming centres. Wenever destroy a healthy dog and will look after each one foras long as it takes until a loving new home is found.

What services do you provide?Dogs Trust also aims to deal with the root of the problem byoffering a range of educational, neutering andmicrochipping programmes. We run outreach projectswhich provide advice and services for pet owners who arehomeless and a free fostering service for families fleeingdomestic violence. We also run the Canine Care Cardscheme. This is a special free service that guarantees peace

of mind to dog owners, knowing that their dog’s future willbe a safe and happy one after their lifetime.

What’s your role at the charity?I’ve worked at Dogs Trust for over 30 years now, and thebeauty of my role is that every day is different. One day Imight be office-bound, the following day I might be talking togovernment, and the next I might be at one of our Centresmeeting our adopters.

How can groups help raise funds for you? As we receive no funds from government, we’re totally reliantupon the generosity of dog lovers in order to continue ourwork. Every donation is important – whether it comes frompeople sponsoring dogs, selling raffle tickets, runningmarathons or sending us their loose change.

How much income do you get from legacies?Around a third of our income comes from legacies. They areabsolutely essential in order for us to continue our work. Eachand every legacy we receive is literally a gift of life tohundreds and sometimes thousands of vulnerable animalsthat, tragically, might otherwise be destroyed.

Where does the money go?Legacies help us to continue to provide food, bedding, veterinary care and TLC for the dogs living at our rehomingcentres. It’s also a vital source of income in helping us tomaintain and improve our Centres. We have built some fantasticnew Centres in the last few years which was only possiblethanks to the generosity of people leaving us a gift in their Will.

How would our readers go aboutleaving a legacy to you?Our free legacy information pack featuring our own ‘LegalBeagle’ is available to showour supporters how toleave us a lasting legacy. It offers a step by stepguide through the process, everything from informationabout the different types ofgifts you can leave to providingsuggested wording.

Do you hear any ofthe stories behindpeople leaving alegacy? It’s always very touching to hearthe stories behind the bequestswe receive. Many people leaveus legacies because their petdogs brought huge joy intotheir lives and they want to

celebrate their love for our four-legged friends by leaving agift that will help dogs less fortunate than their own.

What are your plans for Dogs Trustin the future?

I’d dearly love to see the day when no healthy strayor abandoned dog is destroyed in the UK. I’m

convinced that this day will come about in the not toodistant future. We’d like to build at least two more

rehoming centres to help make this dream a reality. Weare also encouraging more overseas organisations to

share our vision and this work seems to be payingdividends. Each year, we train hundreds of animalwelfare workers from all over the globe. It’s a thrill tosee their passion for animal welfare and thirst for

knowledge. I would definitely like to see us assist moreof these groups to make the world a better place for
