PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Congratulations to our Yr5 students who nominated for Primary Captains for 2012. It takes great deal of courage to stand up in front of your peers to seek election. All candidates spoke very well, and had obviously prepared convincing speeches in advance. Thank you to all parents and grandparents who attending to provide moral support. Student gain University Entry Several of our Yr12 students have already been offered places at University for study in 2012. Congratulations to Jared Austin, Kristen Hunt and Zoe Nairne who have been selected for early admission to the University of New England. I know several of our students have already had a number of offers from different universities and now are in the enviable position of being able to choose between the offers. A fantastic result for students from a small country school! Parent survey Merriwa Central School receives additional funding under the Priority School Program (PSP) for low socioeconomic communities. PSP funds provide valuable additional support for literacy

and numeracy programs within the school. The program is up for renewal next year and as a result we will need to survey parents as part of the process. To be considered once again for the program it is essential that all parents complete the survey which will take place in Term 1 2012. Swim School Program Primary students commenced the Swim School program this week. The program aims to ensure all children have a basic standard of water safety which is essential in our rural environment. Thank you once again to our Swim School instructors Kylie Austin, Jared Austin and qualified teaching staff for assisting with the program. Newcastle Herald Winners Secondary students were big winners in the Newcastle Herald’s School Newspaper competition. Mr Johnson accompanied students xxxxxxxxxxxxxx to Newcastle on Wednesday to receive their awards. Check out the photos in next week’s Ringer.

STUDENTS OF THE WEEK

Pictured are: Samantha Bristow, Dylan Daniel, Giaan Folpp and Cody Towell with books presented to them for their great writing this week. Absent : Jamie Constable. A new ramp is currently being erected to allow improved wheelchair access into the library. The construction, which begins this week, should be completed in mid-January. Our cricket pitch is being resealed at the same time, so we can expect a resurgence in cricket skills over the Summer months. Last term our student leaders attended a Student Equity Forum in Singleton. One of the suggestions made by the student leaders was that lunchtime sport activities be organised by the sporting Captains. Last week the sporting captains began to offer activities for students in the second half of lunch-time play. So far the infants and primary students have enjoyed a game of Tag-football, Bench Ball, tabloid activities and ball skills. We look forward to more activities as the term progresses. The activities have resulted in more students being active and involved in sporting events during lunch-times as well as creating opportunities for the students to practise their skills of joining in and playing fairly.

The weather has finally cleared and warmed up in time for Swim School! This great scheme will run for 2 weeks for students in Years 1 to 6, culminating on Friday 9 December. Our candidates for School Captain 2012 presented their speeches on Friday 25 November. Voting will be finalised this week and counting completed which will determine our leaders for next year. Good luck to our candidates: Jazzmine Orton, Tarah Cox, Dylan Daniel, Maddilyn Blackadder, Jack McAlister, Teianna Taylor, Paige McConnell, Elaina Sormaz and Shai Blackadder. Two captains and four prefects will be chosen from this list of worthy candidates. Home Readers: notes went home last week asking for the return of Readers. We would like all readers to be returned by Friday 9 December at the very latest. Well done to all children who have regularly used the Home Reader System in 2011, your results show great improvement. Although we have not quite achieved Regional Targets, our results this year are improved over those of 2010. Next year the Home Reader Scheme will continue with the added incentive that we are also entering the NSW Premiers Reading Challenge. The challenge runs from February 1 to September 1, 2012. Book lists are available for downloading from the site: NSW Premiers Reading Challenge 2012. The last session for our 2012 Kindergarten students will be held on Thursday 1 December. Interviews with Kindergarten parents will be held on Thursday 15 December. Please ensure that you have booked your interview time with Mrs Strachan.

What a beautiful, sunny start to week 8! Fingers crossed that this weather continues.

Swim School begins today and it was great to see students remembering all their swimming accessories. Thank you to the staff and parents for assisting with transport. We couldn’t do it without you! You are invited to the opening of our Building the Education Revolution (BER) new bathroom facilities on Tuesday, 6 December beginning at 10:30am. This will include a brief, official opening by Mr Joel Fitzgibbon and morning tea under the shady trees. Hope to see you there. Captain and Vice-Captain Speeches Speeches and voting for the Cassilis Captain and Vice-Captain for 2012 will be held tomorrow at 9am in the 3-6 room. Our 2011 Year 6 Captain, Corey, and Vice-Captain, Mat, wanted to say a few words

about their experience this year and give advice to our two candidates- Taine and Tarnisha. Corey Nairne- My roll of school captain has allowed me to become less shy than I used to be. I am now able to speak confidently to a whole group of people. I have been fair to people. I have really enjoyed being Cassilis’s captain because I have learnt a lot. My advice to Tarnisha and Taine is to be fair, make friends with everybody and don’t be shy. That is definitely one thing that I have learnt during 2011. Good luck!

Mat Haydon- During 2011 I learnt to be a good vice-captain. Being involved in everything is important, like excursions. You have to be nice to the little children and encourage the students to do the right thing and follow our school rules. I would like to be in the SRC when I get to high school because it would be pretty cool. Best of luck to Taine and Tarnisha!

Reports Semester 2 reports will be sent home Monday, 5 December. Parent/ Carer chats will be held on Tuesday, 6 for K-2 students and Wednesday, 7 for 3-6 students. These chats are optional and other times can be arranged if requested.

Cameron has been tutoring drama with the Young People's Theatre for some years now and has just finished his first year at Uni in Bathurst. He has taught drama classes in Maitland and has also directed plays through the Young People's Theatre. We are very excited about Cameron coming to visit on Tuesday and Wednesday of the last week of school!

MERRIWA PRE-SCHOOL

Hardy Indoor Plants Wanted Pre-school are on the look out for some tough, easy to grow, ‘air conditioner friendly’ indoor plants. We need any variety that trails across a cupboard as well as any large indoor plant that may reach a fair height quickly. If you know of any, or have any that you can propagate for us for early next year, we would be most grateful. Please drop in or phone us on 65 482 083. Orientation Day We were very pleased to welcome our new Pre-school families last week. Despite the

rain, we carried with additional parents and children on in an alternate venue. It was great to meet all these new families and we look forward to building new relationships in the New Year. A reminder to all families to please return any enrolment forms or re-enrolment form in the next week. We are also still trying to collect an individual photograph for everyone’s 2012 Portfolio, some blue book, birth certificate and health care card information. Please drop in so that we can copy these documents if you have not yet done so. Many thanks.

WOMEN'S GATHERING TO BE CONSIDERED

A meeting on 23 November 2011 has been called to discuss the feasibility of applying to hold a Women's Gathering in Scone in 2013. NSW Rural Women's Gatherings have become a yearly event bringing women together for networking, learning, gaining inspiration and ideas and sharing information. They are held around rural NSW, with the most recent one in Gloucester last month, and the 2012 gathering to be held in Parkes on 12-14th October. "Local Committees or groups are invited to submit a proposal to hold the gathering in their town" said Mayor Lee Watts, " and we are inviting local groups and interested individuals to come together to discuss the feasibility of submitting an application for Scone to hold a gathering". The Gatherings regularly attract hundreds of women to a weekend of activities including local tours, workshops, discussions and meetings. "A Women's Gathering could be an opportunity to showcase our Upper Hunter Shire area and bring a large number of women, and often their partners, to visit and partake in our local shopping, sightseeing and projects, "Mayor Watts added. "If there is sufficient interest, we will need to look for sponsors and seek involvement of local organisations in planning for accommodation, catering and activities".

The first step is to see if there are local people who would like to become involved in planning and preparing a submission which would be due by the end of March 2012.

Interested people should contact Kerri Cone on 6 5 4 0 1 1 4 1 o r e m a i l [email protected] to assist with planning for catering.

only $4.00, Sirdar 225g claw hammer for only $3.00 and a sling chair for only $6.50. Come in and meet Sandy and Rusty. We will be having a live radio broadcast with 2NM/Power FM, and again, there will be more freebies. Anyway, Unfortunately I think I may have made sense today so that's enough from me.

Did you know? Who remembers a cartoon with Duddley DoRight in it? Well did you know that Duddley DoRight's Horses name was "Horse."

MERRIWA NEWSAGENCY Your Local Newspower Store and Office Smart Agent 24 Days to Go! It is now December, and that means it is officially close to Christmas. It is time to get organised! It is not just the gifts that we have to think about, but all of the little things as well. Gift ideas The Remote Control Stunt Show Vehicle is a great gift idea. It spins, flips, and tumbles. It is very manoeuvrable and fun to play with. It lights up and plays music. The best part is that it runs on a rechargeable battery. Stock is very limited as they have none left at the warehouse, so grab one before it is too late. Little girls love to dress up. We have a variety of dress up outfits that are perfect. They come with a dress, shoes and accessories. There are a variety of colours to choose from. Everyone loves to make stuff with their hands. The Ice Cream Shop is perfect. It is a kid’s dough set that comes with all the things you would need to make play ice cream. There are ice cream cones, moulds, cups and spoons. A waffle iron and ice cream coloured dough. It is the perfect gift to keep the kids occupied for hours! Backyard cricket is a must on Christmas Day, and definitely must be played on Boxing Day. The Kids Cricket Set is perfect for this. It includes a bat, stumps and ball in a handy carry bag. It means you will not spend half the day searching for a ball or for something to use as the stumps! If kids are feeling creative, chances are that the walls are a good place to start. Instead of sacrificing your walls in the name of art, why not invest in the blackboard whiteboard combo. Chalk, markers and erasers are included and with a big bulldog clip can easily double as an easel. Most of us had a blackboard as a child and the addition of the whiteboard just makes it more fun!

Diaries are the perfect gift idea. Everyone needs a little help remembering what appointments they have and when they have them. There are a large range of business diaries. They come in A4, A5 and pocket size. There are hard cover and soft cover, spiral bound and sewn. They come in black, blue and burgundy. There is also a large range of ladies diaries. There is the Women’s Health Diary, Country Style Diary, Country Collections Diary, Cats in Small Places Diary, Gardening Australia Diary and Wellbeing Yoga Diary. They are a week to an opening, have lots of interesting facts and tips, beautiful illustrations and are perfect for the lady of the house. All Wrapped Up Now that you have the gifts, the next step is wrapping them. There are many elements that make up the perfectly wrapped gift. Firstly you must buy the wrapping paper. We have 3-roll packs as well as smaller rolls and larger rolls. There are traditional papers and modern designs. If the present is unsuitable for wrapping in paper, we also have bottle bags and other gift bags. Gift tags are also a must. We have a lovely range of gift tags that are stick on and ones that are tie on. The tie-on tags are big enough to write a note to the recipient. The stick-on tags are sweet and come in a variety of designs. Do not forget that sticky tape is a must. We sell a variety of sizes, suiting those with only a few presents left to wrap, as well as large rolls for those who like to make life difficult for the person unwrapping the present. Handy Hint: wrapping a present is easiest if the shape is a box. If you have oddly shaped presents to wrap, find old shoe boxes or some other kind of box to put it in. This will make wrapping easier and far less stressful! Phone Cards; all cards are now available including Telstra, Optus & Vodaphone Cash or Eftpos only

WOOLBROOK RURAL INDUSTRIES About twelve of my class mates, mostly underage, were either at Flinders when I got there or arrived afterwards. Quite a few recruits from my school had also joined the Navy in previous years, more had gone into the Army, but some chose the RAAF with many of these finishing up in Bomber Command in Britain. I remember my son John commenting that the WW2 casualty rate from this school, which we both attended, appeared to be greater in WW2 than WW1, which did not seem to make sense considering the wholesale slaughter in France in WW1. My explanation was that so many had died in Bomber Command over Europe where the horrific casualties were even worse than France. These men came not only from Britain but also the old Empire (New Zealand, Canada, Rhodesia, Australia) and other places. A gruesome statistic is that while Australians who served in Bomber Command totalled only 2% of all Australian enlistments, they also comprised 20% of all those killed in action, and they were the cream of the young men of Australia. The equivalent American casualties over Europe were at least as high as their policy was daytime bombing with very heavily armed aircraft (Liberator and Flying Fortress), and when possible accompanied by long range fighters, as opposed to British night bombing and avoiding night fighters as far as possible. Part of this American policy had a very simple objective, i.e. to persevere till they had shot the Luftwaffe out of the sky, and the Americans did not hesitate to include high ranking officers from General down in air crew when appropriate. This daytime policy was successful to the extent that when D Day came the German air force was so depleted it could do little to stop the invasion, though of course this was achieved at enormous cost in both American and German lives. To return to the subject, perhaps I set a record very early in my time at Flinders, and it happened this way. As I recall, my draft arrived on a Thursday afternoon, that night we slept as best we could, and on Friday we were kitted out and performed two important naval tasks, i.e. we made a will and appointed a Power of Attorney. The ship was divided into four divisions or watches, Foretop, Maintop, Port and Starboard with a Lieutenant Commander in

charge of each. Mine was named Wilson, and he appeared to be disliked by everyone, including, I believe, all his brother officers. Another was named Wright and we all wished we were in his division because he was fair and well liked. Every Saturday morning we cleaned and scrubbed the quarters where we lived and slept (in hammocks), then in theory all four watches paraded in Number One uniforms and three watches went ashore. However, in practice the watch on board stayed in work overalls and hid in nearby scrub till the parade was over. On my first Saturday, resembling the kind of bad dream one sometimes has, I somehow found myself in the parade but still in my overalls, and the sailor alongside me said “Get the hell out of here mate before that XXXX Wilson gets here”, but it was too late. He instantly spotted me, gave me the mother of all rockets, then told me to be at the Blocks Office (Administration Centre) that night at 6 PM. I was there on time, and it was a clear, very cold dark lonely night with a biting wind, but Wilson didn’t show. I waited for about half an hour, sheltering from the wind on the office verandah as best I could, and was about to leave when Wright passed by and asked me why I was doing there. He listened to me carefully, then asked how long I had been at Flinders and I said “Two days, sir”. He thought about that then said, I am sure with tongue in cheek, “Obviously Lieutenant-Commander Wilson has been unavoidably held up somewhere and cannot get here so I will punish you, clean out the Blocks Office”. The office entrance was right behind me and I said “Sir, I can’t, its locked, I can’t get in” and he said “Well so it is, I hadn’t noticed, just do the best you can, and clean it out again tomorrow night. If it’s locked again, still do what you can”. Then he wagged his finger at me very emphatically, saying with emphasis “Now remember, you have been punished, do not forget that!!!” and sauntered off looking, I thought, quite pleased with himself. Next morning Wilson immediately singled me out and put me on Commander’s Defaulters Report. HMAS Cerberus had a Commodore (Rear Admiral) on board nicknamed “Big Bill”, but a Captain is in charge of a ship and ours was known as “Poop Deck Pappy” after Popeye

the Sailorman’s father. A Naval Captain is much higher in rank than an Army Captain and equivalent to a Colonel, with his next promotion, if he gets one, being to Commodore. Under him is a Commander, in our case a well liked “Dusty” Rhodes, all Rhodes in the Navy obviously being “Dusty”. Commanders are the equivalent of a Lieutenant Colonel, then comes the First Lieutenant (the “Jimmy”, equivalent to an Army Major), then various other Lieutenant Commanders and Lieutenants. DR STOKES We are going to run another diet program at the beginning of next year. It will be rather like a three month detox, with the aim of showing you how well you can feel if you eat as nature intended. Anyone who would like to enrol needs to contact Carol on 6532 5013. It will not be complicated. You will be given advice and then left to follow it yourselves, with backup only as required. G'DAY FRIENDS OF IGA MERRIWA We hope our weekly column finds you all doing well. Last week was my first attempt at writing this weekly column. Having never read nor seen a copy of the Merriwa Ringer, I was going into the mission somewhat blind and not really knowing what or where the words would go. It felt a bit like driving in the dark without the headlights on - but I think we successfully got there. For me, it was such a buzz to read the Ringer this week and see all the local articles and news from all the groups and businesses in the district. The team at the Merriwa Central School sure do a fabulous job at compiling such an informative and well put together paper for the community to read & enjoy. The paper is an invaluable resource for the locals to be informed on local news & events. Well done team. In last weeks column I introduced myself and gave some background information on how I came to live in Merriwa. I wasn't sure how many people read the column, or the paper. I mentioned for readers to not be shy in coming up to me in the store & introducing themselves to me. I can't tell you how overwhelmed I was on Thursday when the paper came out as to how many lovely folks did come up and introduce themselves. It was so warm & hospitable of the people who did - such a humbling experience. That sort of warmth & hospitality just wouldn't be extended to you where I am from in Sydney. It just wouldn't happen. So, thank you all, from the bottom of my heart for being so welcoming and kind about the article and welcoming me to your beautiful town. Very cool, Thank you. It's been a very busy week in the supermarket. The IGA warehouse/distribution

hub in Sydney had a relocation, so it meant that both of our weekly deliveries arrived later than usual. This meant there were some delays with a few products hitting the shelves. All these delayed products are now back on the shelf. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. For the last couple of weeks & for the first time, we have been selling Mobile Phones in the shop. As an introductory offer, we are offering a Samsung E1080 Pre-paid handset for an amazing price of only $14.99! I can hear a bargain ringing there! This is a special IGA exclusive for the Christmas season, running through until the end of December. At this fantastic price, it would suit anyone who doesn't have a phone or perhaps a great way of keeping tabs on the kids (or Granny) when they're out & about. The phone is great for talk or text, features an inbuilt torch, vibration alert and speakerphone for handsfree function. The phones are offered through the Optus network. Also available in store are re-charge & Epay options to top up the call & text credits on your handset. The weekly specials catalogue is out in the store and runs until Sunday 4 December. Some products are marked down with up to 50% off. Baked Not Fried, Arnott's Shapes are $1.49

each. McCain Family Pizzas 550g are 35% off at only

$3.99 each. Delicious Yellow Flesh Nectarines are now in

LG Optimus Spirit A new smart phone with 3.2 inch touch screen and a 3Mpx autofocus camera with video. Android operating system and a social networking widget. In silver or black for $147.

Samsung Galaxy 5 Android OS with 2.8 inch touch screen, 2Mpx camera and Wi-Fi & GPS chip. Includes a 2GB micro SD card plus all the usual features, check in store. Now only $107.

Telstra Easycall 2 - Now $79 This is a mobile phone with a difference and is aimed at those who are either unable or lacking in confidence to use a normal mobile. The buttons and the switches are big and the characters on the screen big and clear. The phone will speak numbers as you press them. You can programme the Easy Call to contact friends/family just by flicking a switch. It has a blue tick for best reception and also an easily operated torch and FM radio. There are no unnecessary features to complicate things – this phone is just designed to make calls easy. The special price of $79 while stocks last and only from Merriwa PO. Mail Sorting and Pick-up At the post office we are now well and truly into our busiest period of the year. Parcel volumes are increasing even more and storage space is critical. We would ask you to please pick-up your parcels and packages promptly

and you must bring in your red & white card so that we know where to look for your item. Because of the high volumes the mail is taking longer to sort, not just here but all the way through Post’s network. Mail is arriving later at Merriwa and taking longer to sort. Please bear with us as we try to get your mail out ASAP. Avoid ringing-up to look for your parcel, since while we are looking it’s likely that someone else is being delayed at the counter.

If you have a private box then to ensure you pick-up all the days mail it is best to collect after 12 noon. Working in a post office gives a whole new meaning to “silly-season” so please help us to help you!

Christmas Stamps. Christmas stamps are now available from Merriwa Post Office. The price is the same as last year, 55c. You can buy them individually, gummed, or in books of twenty for $11. Stamps for Christmas cards sent overseas are also available for $1.50 gummed or a book of five for $7.50.

Try and get your overseas cards away early as there is always a last minute rush which can overload the system and make your card late. This applies doubly for packages and parcels sent overseas for Christmas.

Shuffle Mp3 for $25 Would you like green, purple or silver? Pico Life, MP3 player with shuffle looks and works a lot like a popular American fruity brand but for only $25. With headphones, 2Gb memory and very easy to use you can’t go wrong with this carry anywhere music player.

RECYCLING DOWN UNDER

In January next year, the Tour Down Under, once Adelaide’s, now Australia’s premier cycling event, will no doubt attract special attention with the amazing success of Cadel Evans in the Tour de France last July. Cycling, not just the professional or the competitive kind, but also cycling to commute from place to place has become increasingly popular – and so has recycling. National Recycling Week was established by Planet Ark 15 years ago and now has a permanent place on the calendar of Australia-wide events during the second week of November each year. Recycling in Australia has a long history. The first Australian paper mill to use recycled material was built in 1815. And waste paper collections from households and factories started in Melbourne in the 1920’s. During the first half of the last century, resources were generally not as readily available as they are today; so people valued them more and reused materials whenever possible.

Now, with a greater awareness of environmental issues, recycling has once again become an important part of our more modern society. Of course, recycling some things is especially problematic; and there are some things that should never be recycled, nor should they end up on the rubbish dump. Top of the list of these non-recyclable products are medicines.

Keeping old medicines can be a health risk, and d ispos ing o f unwanted med ic ines inappropriately can also pose a risk to the environment. We Australians are certainly a nation of hoarders. That may be great for some things – items of furniture perhaps, that might gain in antique status – bottles of wine that

mature with age – and there are those unique collectible items such as stamps and coins that appreciate in value as time goes by.

There’s no financial benefit, however, in collecting medicines. In fact, there are some significant problems associated with having old or unwanted medicines lying around the house. It seems obvious that if your medicine cabinet is “choc-o-block” with medicines there’s a chance of confusion and misadventure – even more so if those medicines are not stored correctly. They must be out of sight, out of mind and out of reach of kids and grandkids. And while children may be at special risk by swallowing a little (or a lot) of this and that – just out of curiosity, it’s also easy enough for us adults to get confused with a cupboard full of alternatives.

So what do we do to ensure our homes are safe from medication misadventure? Well, what we don’t do is flush our unwanted medicines down the toilet or the kitchen sink; nor do we dispose of them in the household garbage. We shouldn’t assume that sewage treatment plants can effectively treat all substances contained in medicines and we don’t want fish and other aquatic life suffering the side effects of medicines we no longer want. The only safe method of disposal is to return your unwanted medicines to your local pharmacy. Medicine collection bins funded by the Commonwealth Government have been placed in every pharmacy in Australia. Once full, they are removed and the contents safely destroyed. It’s all part of the RUM (Return Unwanted Medicines) campaign.

Each month the RUM program helps to prevent about 30 tonnes of medicines from potentially harming our environment or possibly harming us as well. The second week in November might have passed but there’s still time to give your medicine chest a bit of a spring clean. For more information about RUM or simply to get some advice on how to sort your medicines and manage them better, call into Merriwa Pharmacy.

RELAY FOR LIFE Only a couple of days to go until Merriwa Relay For Life takes place. Saturday December 3 and the following Sunday morning, and yes, bring your tent or swag. Survivors and carers are central to Relay For Life. The opening lap of each event is dedicated to cancer survivors and those who have cared for someone facing cancer. All cancer survivors and cares are welcome to join in - you don't even need to be a member of team. If you would like to register as a survivor or a carer, please contact your local Relay Coordinator or you can register on the day. Three double passes for a hot air balloon ride will be given away at Merriwa's Relay. For your chance to win one of the 3 double passes on a Wine Country Ballooning experience, you must be registered for Relay For Life. Simply send in a Shop A Docket to the Cancer Council with your name, address etc. (Terms & conditions apply). Shop A Dockets are available from Merriwa Hardware. Passes will be drawn at the Merriwa Relay For Life. An invitation is extended out to those who have lost a loved one to cancer, to bring in photos for the remembrance ceremony. If photos can be brought in to me at Merriwa Hardware, we

can do a display at Relay, but we need some time to sort it. So please get them in as soon as possible. Miss Relay will be held again this year, so to those who entered last time, enter again and throw down a challenge to someone you know. Got your frock ready? Let's see if we can get together another bevy of beauties. Don't forget that Relay is being catered for there will be Steak Sandwiches, Sausage sandwiches, Healthy Salads, Hot Beef and Gravy Rolls and Chicken and Gravy Rolls and a coffee machine! All at reasonable prices!! So Bring the whole Family, enjoy the celebration and support Relay For Life. The unfortunate truth is that 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. All money raised through Relay For Life makes a difference in helping fund Cancer Council's critical research, prevention, education and support services. Help us reduce the impact cancer has on our communities. Who will you relay for?

LADIES GOLF NEWS The gathering of six optimistic golfing ladies thought that it would be possible to get in at least nine holes of golf before it rained last Wednesday. It wasn’t. It was Deirdre’s trophy day and we were all keen to compete despite the high risk of being rained on. The first six holes were quite pleasant and for some the game was going well. Gay, De and Deirdre led out the field followed by Sue, Merrie and Jane. We played a stroke round with the best nett to receive a prize as well as the best putter and also the putter with the least amount of skill on the day. All went well until the 7th hole when the skies opened and the rain came down. Putting on the greens became quite challenging with scraping no longer possible and water inundating the greens. Soaked through to the skin and trying to fill scores in on soggy cards made it all a bit unpleasant so we retired after nine holes. Deirdre conducted her prize giving over a comforting cuppa where Gay was awarded the trophy for the best nett score, De the putting prize and Merrie won the other prize.
