LEGACY ROSEMARY COLLECTION
It is that time of the year again to get ready to harvest and bring in your Rosemary.
We will be receiving rosemary as usual at the Merriwa RSL Club from Saturday April 14 to Wednesday April 18. Best to bring any rosemary collected in on Monday to Wednesday due to reduced wilting time.
There will be cartons available at the RSL Club from Saturday April 14.
As the weather has once again dried off, please consider giving your rosemary a good soak prior to cutting to minimise stress on your plants.
Legacy have come to depend on us for the majority of their rosemary. Last year we supplied them with more than 90% of their needed rosemary sprigs. Legacy in turn supports in excess of 14 000 widows, children and people with disabilities.
Remember Legacy because Legacy Remembers.

Coming Events
Principal’s ReportI trust everyone had a relaxing Easter break, given the number of people heading off camping for the weekend we struck perfect weather. The end of term one is rapidly approaching, with much to do over the next week.
MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING
Our whole school focus this year on student wellbeing saw staff undertake training in visible wellbeing on Day 1 this term. The establishment of our wellbeing room this term for secondary students has proven highly popular with students.
This week I attended training in Tamworth with our newly appointed Wellbeing teacher Miss Golden. The workshop delivered by Headspace focused on supporting secondary schools and students impacted by youth suicide.
We hope to provide a range of workshops for parents around mental health strategies to support their children throughout the year. One of the first workshops we aim to run will assist parents to understand bullying, school processes and how they can support their child.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
Information packs about school photographs were sent home last week and all parents should have the information from Master School Portraits. Photographs will take place next Tuesday on the primary campus. For parents who would like family portraits taken, they will be available from 11.00am in the primary library. Please remember to send your money and orders in on Tuesday for the photographers, alternatively payment can be made directly to MSP online.
SNAKE TAILS
We aim to provide a range of learning opportunities for students, and support visiting performers through the use of our Gonski funding. This ensures all students are able to participate, with costs being covered by the school. This week our students had the opportunity to learn about Australian reptiles with the visiting Snake Tails performance, a fascinating up close and personal learning experience for our students.

CROSS COUNTRY
Primary had a very busy day last Thursday. All our students ventured down to the Merriwa Showground to compete in our Kindergarten-Year 12 Cross Country/Fun Run event. Students had a fantastic time and staff would like to congratulate students on their sportsmanship they showed on the day.
Thank you to the parents and community members who volunteered to assist and were very helpful on the day. Without your support such events are difficult to run smoothly.
We ask that Fun Run sponsorship forms are returned urgently to school so prizes can be ordered and received by students promptly in Term 2. Students who qualified for the Zone level of competition will be notified and we look forward to acknowledging our students’ efforts soon during our ribbon presentation.

SCHOOL PHOTOS
School Photos will be held on Tuesday April 10. Students are to return their forms and payment envelopes
on the day, so they can be handed to the photographer. Please ensure correct money is in the envelope as the school does not handle the money.
PRIMARY REWARDS DAY- MAD SCIENTISTS
Our Rewards Day will be held next week on Wednesday April 11 and we are excited to be celebrating the positive behaviour of Kinder-Year 6 students with a special science afternoon.
This term, Mrs Hourn and Mrs Martin have been busy planning a variety of science experiments and construction activities for eligible students to complete. Students are invited to dress up as ‘Mad Scientists’. They may like to wear white lab coats, crazy wigs or goggles.
We are looking forward to our first Rewards Day for 2018 and cannot wait to see the many imaginative costumes students are planning to create.
REMINDER: HOME READERS AND LIBRARY BOOKS
As we are coming to the end of Term 1, we would like to remind students about overdue library books and home readers. If all students can please return their home readers and library books by the end of the term, which would be greatly appreciated.

AGRICULTURE NEWS
I joined Merriwa Central School as an Agriculture teacher at the start of 2018 from Singleton High School. I bring with me a vast range of experience in this role, accumulated during my teaching career.
Year 11 students have been busy with their studies on “how to run a farm as a business”. These students had to conduct a research on the school farm as part of their assessment task. Year 9 and 10 Agriculture students have been involved with various practical activities such as repairing the old green house in which vegetable seedlings are being raised, dismantling the old sheep yards and erecting new ones. Three paddocks have been ploughed up and ready for seeding sometime this week. We are intending to sow perennial rye grass, wheat and oats respectively.
We were able to sell some of our sheep flock through the sale yards. As of mid-May we will be getting two steers all kindly donated to the school by Tocal College. Our students will be involved in Junior Cattle judging and Leading at Tocal College at a date to be advertised in due course. As a school tradition we will also be involved in the Beef Bonanza show in Scone sometime in Term 3.
The effort of my students in promoting sustainable agriculture at the school is well appreciated. Thanks to Karin Brazier for your great effort and team work. As a team we thrive to see the Agriculture plot remain viable and sustainable. I would like to thank those local farmers, suppliers, Elders, CRT to name a few, Hunter Local Land Services and the community for your support for Agricultural education at this school. We would appreciate any farmers or experts in Agriculture who would be interested in visiting the school farm or intend to share their expertise in agriculture with students to contact me through the school office so arrangements can be made.

YEAR 10 MOCK INTERVIEWS
On Tuesday March 27 Year 10 students participated in the Merriwa Central School Mock Interview Program. Four Merriwa Business proprietors volunteered their time to assist with the interviews. The Year 10 students had to apply for a position that interested them and then attend an interview for that job. There were many nervous students waiting for their interviews on Tuesday. I would like to congratulate the students who participated and hope they learnt a lot from the experience. The Interview panels were impressed with the range of students who attended the interviews and were able to offer some good advice to students about their applications, resumes and general interview techniques.
Merriwa Central School would like to thank the following community members who assisted on the day.• Ivan Gant• Tash Taff• Mark Sparrow• Linda Gant
Without their support the day would not have been possible and it is a wonderful learning experience for our students to have access to, so thank you for your time and effort on the day.

Welcome to the Easter season. We are now celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus. His resurrection gives us hope that we will also rise from death to a new life with God. The way we ensure this is to live now in this hope and follow Jesus’ example to love one another as God has loved us.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful Easter break.
The Mass of the Last Supper was celebrated on Holy Thursday at St Anne’s Church. The students were able to re-enact the Last Supper tradition of washing the disciples feet. Fr John washed the feet of the Year 6 Leaders explaining to

all that Jesus showed his love by serving others. In the same way we all need to be of service to one another. The Kingdom of God is not about being high and mighty but about love and service.
The Easter Hat Parade at the end of the day was a wonderfully happy event. The children loved parading their creative hats as did the teachers. Thank you to the Year 6 leaders who gave up many of their lunch breaks to help the rest of the students create Easter hats. What a great example of service!
ST JOEY’S BOY HITS HIS STRAPS AT THE ROYAL EASTER SHOW
Year 6 student, Roy Lawler was selected to compete in Polocrosse at the Royal Easter Show over the weekend. Roy’s Team were runners up. Congratulations! Roy was then named Best rider in his position (Number 2). We all like to hear good news stories and I am sure Roy’s parents Tim and Pauline, his extended family, the Merriwa Pony Club, Bunnan Polocrosse Club and St Joseph’s Equestrian team as well as the wider community all share in the pride and pleasure of Roy’s achievements. We eagerly await news on how ex-students Nicole and Clancy Martin and April Lawler perform in the mounted games today (Tuesday).

MERRIWA – OUR COMMUNITY – OUR RESPONSIBILITY!
When asked again by a number of local people why our school does not participate in the shopper docket reward schemes run by the big supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths, I thought it time to repeat our school’s view on this.
Sports equipment and other such rewards offered to schools when their community members shop in their store seems like a good deal. But wait there’s more....
Our local shops and businesses lose custom every time one of us travels to nearby towns to shop. Our school benefits directly by the local businesses in a number of ways and we want to do all we can to support them.
Imagine Merriwa with no local shops and businesses.
Where will we go to get that last minute ingredient we need for lunch?
What local employment will there be for our parents and part time employment for high school students?
Who will sponsor us when we have a fundraiser?
What will inspire people to move into our town if there are no shops or businesses?
How will we travel the 80 kms to a doctor every time we feel sick?
How will we keep the sporting clubs, playgroups, schools, museum, churches, service clubs, swimming pool afloat with the subsequent loss of critical population?
No, St Joseph’s will not be contributing to this attempt by big business to win the custom of the good people of Merriwa. The benefits of living in Merriwa far out-weigh the benefit of a few new soccer balls.

REFLECTION: Second Sunday of Easter - John 20:19-31
Today the evangelist speaks to his first-century readers and across the centuries to us. Firstly we hear Jesus speak words of blessing for all who believe without seeing. Thomas’ role in the Easter narrative is to reveal how hard faith is. No matter what the other disciples say Thomas cannot change death to resurrection without certain criteria being met. He places conditions on God - ‘I need to see the holes and touch the living body’.
Real faith means letting go such conditions. We are challenged to surrender our human doubts, our expectations, and normal rational systems of proof. The other disciples come to faith when they actually see Jesus; this is what Thomas asks for - sight of the Risen One. Jesus doesn’t rebuke Thomas, but he speaks words of blessing for those who can go beyond Thomas and believe without seeing him, for those who will believe without conditions.
Today we do not have the risen Jesus visible in our midst, as did those first disciples. Like the Beloved Disciple in the last Sunday’s Gospel we are called to have faith in more subtle signs. We have the written testimony of those first believers, we have the living witness of other Christians today, and we have those divine stirrings in our own lives inviting rather than compelling belief. At the end of the Gospel the evangelical turns to us to say, “I have written these things so that you may believe and have life”.

Sheree came up to the school and gave the students an Easter basket craft activity to work on for the afternoon. She then read us an Easter story before surprising the kids with an Easter egg to put in each of their baskets.
Thanks Sheree! The kids enjoy your visits.

Merriwa NewsagencyNEW IN STORE
let people know that Mother’s Day is just around the corner (already!). it is time to make your mum feel special, and our wonderful range of cards is the perfect way to do it (and it you have to post it, then you better come in sooner rather than later!)
GRAZIHER
The Autumn Issue is now on the shelves, and is a wonderful celebration of women in rural Australia. We celebrate Mothers in this issue, with photographers and writers paying tribute to country mums - all different shapes and sizes, meaning different things to us all, a big part of all of our lives. Then, almost hidden away in the back of this issue is the most delicious apple and raspberry cake that would be the perfect way to show mum how much she means to you.
THE AUSTRALIAN COSMETIC COMPANY
The wonderful, Australian made face and hand creams from this collection are available in a pack or singularly. Today I will be telling you all about the face mask collection. This set includes four different face masks and a face scrub. The scrub is a delicious smelling coconut. The masks are cucumber, white clay, sea mineral and charcoal. They are designed to restore the skin, revitalise and refresh our faces so that we glow with health. They are a wonderful gift idea.
COLOUR IN
If your mother is a fan of the colouring craze that has well and truly taken over the world, then add one of these wonderful books to her collection - Pablo Picasso - the Master of Modern Art is a colouring book filled with some of his most well-known artworks, and some you may not have seen before. There are a range of other artists available, but get in quick as they have been very popular

RotaryTHIS IS THE MONTH OF THE ROTARY BOWELCARE
PROGRAM
The aim of the program is to check bowel movements to detect the presence of blood, which MAY indicate the possibility that bowel cancer is a threat and that immediate investigation would be appropriate, so as to avoid serious consequences.
The presence of blood may be the result of other conditions, unrelated to cancer, such as colitis, diverticulitis, haemorrhoids and fissures. These possibilities require further testing by a doctor so that the situation can be accurately assessed.
BOWELCARE testing is simple, painless, and easy to do in the home environment.
Further information can be obtained, if needed, by contacting the Rotary Helpline on 1300 100 137.
Historically, more kits and sold that are received back....reflecting possibly an acceptance that it is a good idea, but a reluctance to actually take that next step and use it.
BOWEL SCREENING SAVES LIVES.....GET MOVING!
Kits supplied through Rotary Merriwa are available at MERRIWA PHARMACY until the end of April.
Cost is a modest $15.00.
