PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Seniors Week culminated in a performance by primary students to our senior citizens on Friday. Students from Merriwa Central School and St Joseph’s Primary performed at the RSL Club before an appreciative audience.

WHAT IS GONSKI?

The Gonski Review was the most comprehensive investigation of the way schools are funded in Australia in almost 40 years. It was commissioned by the Federal Government and conducted by an expert panel headed by senior businessman David Gonski. The final report was released in February 2012.

Gonski found Australia is investing far too little in education and, in particular, in public schools. As a consequence, too many students are missing out on the resources they need and there are growing gaps in the achievements of students from different backgrounds.

Gonski recommended a $5 billion a year injection of funding into public and private schools (75 per cent to public schools) and an overhaul of the way t h e m o n e y i s distributed to ensure it is going where it is most needed.

The public campaign “I give a Gonski” is aimed to encourage the implementation of the Gonski recommendations.

PRIMARY NEWS

Last week was a very busy week at the primary campus! Students participated in many activities at school and in the town.

CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL

The school Cross Country carnival was held on Tuesday 19 March. Students began their races at the local sport field and travelled along the dirt road beside the golf course. Students 7 years and under ran around the netball courts and finished with a final lap of the field.

Our older students continued along the dirt road and ventured onto the golf course at different intervals, depending on their age. Students 8, 9 and 10 years of age ran 2km while students 11, 12 and 13 years ran 3km. It was wonderful to see everyone cheering each other on and we all had a great day.

We look forward to our place winners aged 8 years and up representing the school at the zone cross country carnival on Friday 5 April. The house winner for Cross Country was Wentworth, well done!

The fundraiser for the Cross Country is still being totalled but so far has reached over $1000! Thank you to all the people who have kindly sponsored our students.

Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to help on the day: Belinda Keane, Lucy Johnson, Tracy Boyle and Jacky Zammit.

Thank you also to Alex Addams for offering to put your dogs inside while the Cross Country was being run so that they didn’t scare the students. Also, thank you to the Upper Hunter Shire Council for all their help and support.

SENIOR CITIZENS CONCERT

Friday finished our week with a bang as the primary Fife Band and classes performed for Senior’s Week in the RSL auditorium. We were proud to see the Fife Band continue the long tradition held in the school, as new participants in the band were led by this year’s captain, Sarah-Jayne Whitby. They all did a wonderful job. All classes performed very well and had a lot of fun. We would like to thank the Merriwa Senior Citizens Pensioners Association for inviting us to attend and share in the celebrations.

NURA GILI VISIT

On Monday we were very fortunate to be selected by the University of NSW to host a Light and Fire presentation form the Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs. Leearna and Danielle spoke to our Indigenous students from years 10, 11 and 12 about University Pathways and planning for their future.

It was a very enjoyable two hour session that provoked a lot of thinking and helped our students identify alternative options for accessing tertiary education. The visit also promoted the University of NSW Winter S c h o o l program for I n d i g e n o u s students to e x p e r i e n c e University life first hand.

SECONDARY SPORT REPORT

Last Wednesday afternoon the secondary department organised its annual Cross Country event. Like previous years, our course sees competitors run along Halls Road, Rifle Range Road, through the Common to Flags Road and back to the top oval. In very warm and sunny conditions, our students competed in 3km, 4km, 6km and 8km races dependent upon their age divisions. It was pleasing to see most students participate to their greatest ability, being sun safe and being safe with their water consumption throughout the event.

The first boy to complete his event was William Taylor, a Year 12 student who represents Lawson House. He competed in the 17 years boys division and finished 6km in around 24 minutes. Callum Telfer (from Blaxland House) finished 2nd place overall.

The first female student to finish was 14 year old Anastasia Martin (Oxley House) who competed over the 4km course. The second female student home was Taylah Blackadder, from Blaxland House, who participated in the 15 year age division.

There were a number of fine performances from our students including Lachlan Walmsley, Connor Constable, Hamish Cameron, Isaac Austin as well as Manda Sormaz, April Eipper, Elaina Sormaz, Alkira Tritton and Cody Marshall-Parker.

In the end, Blaxland was the champion house. Their elite runners were too good for the other houses. Their total house points were 242 with their girls performing particularly well with 126 points. Lawson finished in 2nd place with a total score of 151 points, with their boys contributing 83 points and the girls adding 68 points. Wentworth House finished in 3rd position with 126 points, with 66 points from their boys and 60 points from their girls. In 4th position was Oxley House with 118 points in total. Oxley’s girls contributed 61 points to their total score.

We have offered a large number of students the opportunity to join our Zone Cross Country team. They will compete in Singleton on Wednesday against Scone, Muswellbrook and Singleton High School students. We wish those students well and will report how they have performed a little bit later.

Finally, I need to give thanks to Peter Stone for

his time and kindness in helping me in the lead

up to the Cross Country. Also I would like to

thank staff who manned checkpoints, completed

recording, offered first aid and supported our

students as they participated around the course.

SRC REPORT

Hello Merriwa!

Cameron here with this weeks report. A full packed full SRC meeting this week has brought up many points.

We are reviewing a three night snow excursion organised by Mr Grant. We still have a few details to sort out to make this an option for our students. I will keep you posted.

ANZAC day is also on the way, with our school planning to be present at the March. As well, Michael and Patrick Gilbey are preparing to speak on behalf of our student body at the ceremony.

Rewards day activities have been chosen. This term laser tag was the winner. There will be some brand new ideas for the upcoming terms, which are of course top secret and I can’t share just yet. We are currently finalising the details of the laser tag reward and I will post clear information on the event in the next report.

On that note, I will leave you in suspense, with me looking forward to giving you more news from the SRC next week.

Many thanks!

Pre-School.

I LIKE TO MOVE IT, MOVE IT!

Last week we trialled movement breaks at Pre-School and they were an instant hit.

During our p rogrammed indoor play

session, we are incorporating a m o v e m e n t break, when the famous song f rom

Madagascar plays the group are encouraged to leave their activity for a moment and bust a move. Many of the children have been gathering on the mat and are enjoying a very enthusiastic group experience, others are happy to dance away in close proximity to their work. The key is, there are no rules, this is intended to be an unstructured movement which is designed to be spontaneous and fun. We laugh at each other and our crazy moves especially on Friday when the children hit the dance floor wearing crazy colourful curly wigs. Do we need a excuse to party? This activity will promote physical coordination and body awareness, it is an emotional release and encourages individualism and self concept. Dancing provides expressive possibilities and is 100% inclusive.

Most legitimately of all, a burst of movement will increase our attention and focus to more static pursuits.

Our thanks to everybody who participated in our fantastic Easter raffle. The raffle was drawn by Reverend Mandy at the Pre-School on Wednesday afternoon 20 March. Congratulations to 1st Rowena Mate, 2nd Levi Hourn, and 3rd Julie Smith. I’m sure you are now even more popular. We made a huge profit in excess of $700.00. I will provide you with an exact figure after the next committee meeting, but we are very excited by the response to this great raffle. Thank you Peter Holland, our fundraising coordinator, and the most generous community of Merriwa.

At the beginning of this term the St Joseph’s school and parish communities welcomed 14 new Kindergarten students. Our class was officially welcomed at the Opening School Mass. Following this we planted a tree outside our classroom. We look forward to caring and looking after this tree and watching it grow, just like we will grow during our time at St Joseph’s. Each Kindergarten student has settled into school life and we have been learning a lot.

In our classroom we have been talking about the season of Lent and what Easter means to the Catholic community. We are familiar with the events of Holy Week and we have learnt that the reason we give and receive eggs is because it is a sign of new life. We have enjoyed attending Mass and listening to Father John as he tells us the teachings of God and Jesus.

We have been reading and writing Recounts. Kindergarten has written beautiful recounts and illustrated them with a lot of skill. We have been very busy learning to read and write.

Our Maths skills are developing through counting and working on a lot of different skills. We have been ‘Staying Alive’ in Science & Technology, learning about living and non-living things. In Human Society and Its Environment we have been learning about ‘School Days’. This unit has taught us about what we do at school, our roles and responsibilities. We have also learnt about all of the adults who work for our school and what they do to help us learn.

Our Personal Development unit is all about being Cyber Safe. This is of vital importance with students having access to technology so readily. We have learnt about keeping our personal information safe from people who we do not know on the internet and in real life. One website that we have been using in class is http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/. When visiting this website we have been watching episodes about Hector’s World in the ‘Young Kids’ tab. Another website which we have been completing some cyber smart activities is www.hectorsworld.com, this site has a lot to offer and has allowed us to learn about safety on the internet and other technology we use in class and at home.

In Creative Arts we have been learning about Portraits and looking at some artwork by Andy Warhol and Matisse. Kindergarten has completed a self-portrait and they all look amazing.

On Friday 22, we celebrated Senior Citizen’s Day performing three songs we have learnt. Firstly, they watched a wonderful performance put on by the children of the Merriwa Central

After that they took their positions to sing three beautiful songs. The first was our own school song which tells of the need for hearts full of love for one another to make a good school. The second song was “You can count on me…like 1-2-3”. This song was such a warm and

moving one describing the qualities of strong friendship. The final song of the performance was “You Can Do It”. This is a motivational song which reminds us of the 5 essential skills needed to live life strong:- Confidence, persistence, resilience, organisation and getting along.

When we came back to school we were able to do the performance all over again for the members of our Parish community who had attended the Healing Mass. This was wonderful too.

On Monday we had Mr Morris teach us. This was great fun and we did lots of work. Mr Morris explained to us all about Cerebral Palsy.

A bit of history of our cross country…

The Cross Country has been running for over twenty years. It originally began across the road from the school, however was moved to Dalkeith (a surrounding property) thirteen years ago. The track has remained pretty similar throughout the years, catering for all age groups: infants and primary. It has always involved between one hundred and two hundred people.

A few memories: The one year where it was pouring and

the cross country turned into a mud run.

Runners enjoying the ‘true country course’

dodging the rocks, ants, keeping an eye

out for snakes.

Speaking of snakes…there was one last

year in the female staff toilets that was

discovered during the afternoon

presentation (we weren’t sure if the snake

was a lady and should have been there).

Over the years, we have remained serious injury free. We really appreciate all the support from the community. I shall begin my training for next year…well perhaps after my wedding.

CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL

STUDENT OF THE WEEK - JAMES BIBBY

Over the past few weeks in particular, James has really stepped up to the challenge of year 3. He has gained a greater level of maturity and is adapting well to the changes in routine within the McMaster Room. James is embracing an increased workload and putting effort into everything he does, for example: he demonstrated a great understanding of what a line of symmetry is and how to identify symmetry within different shapes in maths on Wednesday. MERRIWA ACTIVITY CENTRE

As always we have been having loads of fun at MAC! We had a “Chalk Challenge” on Wednesday which was to draw their best picture on the concrete with colourful chalk. Everyone worked very hard on their art work and showed such great creativity it was hard to pick a winner! Everyone judged the drawings and Nikki was found to have the highest score, with her beautiful rainbow and slogan “if you feel sad MAC is always there, be happy”! Such a beautiful picture and shows what MAC means to the children who attend.

With the lovely weather we’ve been having, the children have been enjoying play in the Pre-School grounds. Digging, building and playing cricket have been the children’s favourites this week. Damian, Kyle, Toby and Mia built a fabulous castle out of the big blocks. Once the castle was built Damian and Kyle climbed in and asked Mia and Toby to “lock them in”. It was great to see them all working together to achieve a common goal.

GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER MONDAY

Just a quick reminder for parents that MAC will be closed for Good Friday and Easter Monday. We will be back to our normal operating on Tuesday.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

With our school holidays fast approaching I once again urge parents to book in advance. We have, as usual, loads of fun days planned including a day at the Skate Park, fishing and loads more! We have an excursion planned for the 23 April to the Singleton movies and bowling, please book now to avoid disappointment.

Have a fun filled week Ciara Murphy and the MAC staff.

Welcome back to another week with McConnell’s This ‘n’ That.

Are you a collector of the Colonial Kitchen Canister Range that we have in store? Well you’ll be pleased to know we have restocked our supplies and also added some new items. These include a Dishwasher Tablet Canister, and larger 1.5 litre Tea, Coffee, Sugar Canisters available in red or white and a First Aid Tin, to keep all those patch-up bits together for easy access. The Retro scales are back in stock also. Is your Compost Tin that sits on the bench starting to get a bit smelly? Well it may be time to change the charcoal filter in the lid. We now have replacement filters available in store.

Ashdene has landed with new ranges called Tree of Life and Plume & Perch. These are gorgeous and will make excellent gifts for Mother’s Day which isn’t too far away.

Hey kids! The Schleich new release animals are making their way to our shelves along with the 2013 Schleich catalogue for you to keep track of your collection. Some of the creatures to arrive so far are - a peacock, Texas Longhorn bull, Appaloosa stallion, mare and foal, a Shire stallion, bunnies playing, a drake and chimpanzee. The other new releases are ordered so keep your eyes out for their arrival soon. Now with all these new animals to choose from it must be time to update your wish list so all your loved ones know just what to buy you when they come in. Just ask one of the staff next time you’re in to help you with any additions to your list or if you haven’t made a Wish List yet it’s not too late pop in and we’ll only be more than happy to help. All your loved ones out there please don’t hesitate to ask our staff for that special person’s wish list to help make your decision a little easier.

The nights and mornings are getting a little cooler and days a little shorter so before long it will be time to pull out those winter woollies and boots to keep you warm and dry. Wrangler and Thomas Cook Autumn/Winter Range catalogues are in store for your sneak preview of the coming styles for any updates your wardrobe may need. Thomas Cook also has a new range of Gumboots for women and children which we have in store. Should you not find your chosen style, in your size don’t hesitate to ask us and we’ll order it in. We have a good range of sizes in Riding Boots for all those horse riding enthusiasts, full leather upper with the correct riding sole. The beauty of buying your clothing and shoes local is you are supporting the locals who support you. How? You say. Next time you make a purchase ask for the reward points to be given to your local organisation. Should your organisation not have a rewards card yet stop everything right now, put it down and get down to Ray and sign-up. Every little bit helps.

Congratulations to St Joseph’s Aberdeen Ag Team for their efforts and achievements showing Cattle at the Sydney Royal Easter Show last week. A special mention to Montana Porter who received a Highly Commended in the F002 Parader’s class and also in her steer class. Well done!

Well until next week it’s been great sharing

these few little bits with you.

Hello Lovelies. Welcome to this week’s Guru Ringer write-up. Time sure does fly on by when you get up, get things done, go out, go home, go to bed, get up, get things done, go out, go home, go to bed, get up. That wasn’t a typo, it was me going round in circles. Gosh! Does that happen to you? What day is it? The weeks roll by so quickly. First it’s Easter, then it Christmas, then it’s Easter then it’s, oh shoosh. Thanks so much to all the lovely lovelies who took time to say they enjoyed my Guru rant last week. That was very sweet of you to say so. You can say it this week too if you like. As usual. How I digress!

Isn’t autumn just the best season? Well, autumn and spring. Our weather at the moment is magnificent. I love driving back into the valley and seeing all the green hills. The countryside sure does feel alive & thriving. I love spending time down by the river, too. It’s always such a head cleanse to just sit and watch the water. Throw a few rocks into the water and listen to them plonk. It’s always good to honour our inner child. If you haven’t been down there for a while I encourage you to go and have a look. After all the rain the river has had a good flush and all the over grown shrubs and debris have been taken care of by the high waters.

We’ve had a few big deliveries in the shop in the last week or so. All our massage and healing liniments are back in stock. These are a range of Asian herbal muscle rubs that aid in the treatment and pain management of various conditions such as arthritis, poor blood circulation, muscle cramps, sprains, tensions etc. The most common are Tiger Brand Rubs (in both white and red) and also available in a clear liquid liniment which is great as it provides easy coverage. The White Tiger Balm is great as a muscle rub, but also fantastic to relieve blocked nose symptoms or sinus. It’s fantastic as a chest rub for the kids before bed when they’re a little clogged up. If you suffer from any muscular, joint or arthritic pain, I encourage you to come in and have a chat about a suitable healing cream or liniment.

There are many varieties, each suitable for varying ailments. Ok, enough rambles from me for the week. I wish you a snazzy weekend. We’re open seven days so come in and say G’day.

Some words of advice for the week. Light the gorgeous candles you got for your birthday, use the nice sheets, use the fancy crockery. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special and you are the most special of all. With feelings of self worth and that we are wonderful souls, we go out into the world and treat people in the same way. As always, be fabulous and smile, you’re designed to.

Peace and Love.

Hello Merriwa!

TODAY’S TOPIC: SUGAR

They say “You are what you eat”; well, unfortunately sugar doesn’t make you sweet. In the past five years so much research has been done on sugar and has revealed some nasty, nasty side effects. Sugar has been related to obesity, liver disease, and most surprisingly research is relating sugar to dementia. I have not consumed table sugar, fruit juice or similar processed sugar since October last year and have not had one single head ache since, so I am linking sugar to headaches based on this evidence.

The real and serious trouble is that sugar is everywhere. For parents looking to stack lunch boxes it is near impossible to choose sugar free foods. Now the following list is foods I would avoid. There are of course some alternatives (e.g. – muesli bars) that may be ok, but generally speaking I would avoid:

Fruit Juice Biscuits Chocolates Muesli Bars Yoghurt (other than Greek) Soft drinks Any fruit roll White bread Spreads like jam and nutella

This list can go on and on and I know some things (like chocolate) are obvious but perhaps surprisingly is that yoghurt, brands like SKI for example, are really high in sugar. Really high. So as last week – If in doubt, check it out. Read the label. The back nutritional information panel will say carbohydrate - sugar. That is the total amount of sugars in that food product. An estimate for a human body is about 10g of sugar a day, so check those labels, especially what is the recommended portion size on the label.

REMINDER

The deadline for articles and advertisements for the Merriwa Ringer is

Tuesday 9.00am

Some things to try to get around sugar:

Use Greek yoghurt rather than flavoured

Consider protein powders flavoured with stevia leaf or a similar product

Eat fruit each day If you are craving a sugar hit make your

own desserts Try and limit sugar days to once per week

at maximum

Now if you are thinking to remove sugar from your diet I could not recommend ‘The Sweet Poison’, or ‘The Sweet Poison Quit Plan’ high enough. These books are so detailed on this subject, it is scary and also lists hundreds of awesome alternatives. Sometimes it really isn’t our fault, we just get mislead by companies but with some understanding, we can overcome too high sugar intake and retain our health for the long term of our life. We don’t need to have energy ‘highs’ followed by energy ‘lows’, so here’s to a week of happy eating!

Welcome back loyal readers for a fresh bit of dribble and a tad of jibbering just for good measure.

I’ve mentioned before about our Proper Rewards Loyalty Programme. We are adopting this programme as our form of sponsorship for different organisations, so the more that we are supported, the more support we can give your favourite sporting group or organisation. Groups with Loyalty cards so far are MAC (Merriwa Activity Centre), Holy Trinity Anglican Church and St Josephs Primary School. If you are involved in an organisation of any kind and would like to build up some sponsorship from Merriwa Home Hardware, come in and see us about it.

Shave For a Cure is still happening in Merriwa. My son, Matthew McConnell is raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. Matthew will be shaving his head this coming weekend and is hoping to reach his target of $400.00, but if he raises $500.00, his foolish dad will also have his head shaved. So get behind Matthew and support him in his endeavours to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Home Hardware, not just Merriwa Home Hardware, but the Home Hardware Brand, was recently crowned 2012 “Hardware Store of the Year” by Roy Morgan Research. A phenomenal

MERRIWA HARDWARE

amount of people were surveyed with a range of questions and consequently, the annual awards recognised 37 businesses across ten categories as having the highest customer satisfaction in 2012 with Home Timber and Hardware topping the hardware category against Bunnings, Masters, Mitre10 and True Value Hardware.

Well that’s about it for this week.

Just as a footnote, keep an eye out for Relay for Life and don’t forget to support Matthew, sponsorship can be left at Merriwa Hardware and a tax deductable receipt can be issued.

Just had a wonderful customer in who wanted some swede seeds and was surprised to see the range of seeds that we had on hand. She then told me that I should mention it in this weeks Ringer. Job done.

Did you know? The name for Oz in the "Wizard of Oz" was thought up when the creator, Frank Baum, looked at his filing cabinet and saw A-N, and O-Z, hence "Oz."

Have you noticed how the grasses are seeding in all the paddocks?

After the good rains there was a massive growth in all plants. The soils appear to have stored up nitrogen with the dry spell before the rain. This nitrogen stimulated growth. After the rain and rapid growth plants are rushing to seed with the warm days. Each one of these seeds will have the potential for a new plant when the soil, temperature and moisture conditions are suitable again. Each species of plant have different patterns and conditions that suit their cycle. That is what a farmer has to learn how to manage to provide the maximum amount of feed every year. This same cycle is what Christians understand God works in each of our lives.

The plant cycle we can see around us is the same as the church cycle of Christmas Easter Pentecost.

Why do we celebrate them every year? Why are Australian calendar and holiday periods built around these events?

Because they are important reminders from all of us!

The church events are equivalent to the plant cycle; birth, growth, death and rebirth or resurrection. Many plants die completely but some plants die back to a root stock and then have a new burst of growth when conditions are right again. It can happen many times in a plants life. It can happen yearly.

God is telling us that this cycle is possible for each of us. Over our whole life We are born, grow, learn, have a career, then die and then can be reborn in a new body; or we can be born again at different times in our life when something special happens and God becomes

really close and personal, then the death of our old personality happens and then we have a period of significant growth with God’s spirit providing the stimulus for us to grow and have a new way of life; or we can each year join in the church cycle and remind ourselves and celebrate this cycle of life being possible for anyone at any time in their life. Especially when significant things occur in our lives.

This Easter we remember Jesus died to make it possible for each one of us to be reconnected to God, to be reborn and have a new form of life with God providing the stimulus, the fertiliser, the direction for each of us to have a new life.

Have a blessed, safe and happy Easter time!

Do we, as residents of the Merriwa District, the best food and fibre producing land in Australia, want to declare ourselves to be a Gas-field Free District?

This was the question posed at the end of last week’s “Ringer” article.

Many other communities within the Hunter Valley are in the process of declaring themselves “Gas Field Free Communities”.

For further information and video links go to www.csgfreenorthernrivers.org.

Recent changes to the Strategic Regional Land Use Policy by the Premier, Mr O’Farrell, indicate that there should be no coal seam gas exploration within 2km of towns or significant industry clusters. This appears to indicate that the township of Merriwa is safe. However, because we have no clusters of horse studs or vineyards in the Merriwa district, the whole of the rural area is open slather.

As this district is so reliant on the excellent water resources, we cannot risk any damage to it, such as pollution or loss of water.

For your information, AGL is currently applying to carry out seismic testing on Bunnan Road, Ridgelands Road, Ashwood Road and on some private land.

In order to protect our district it is necessary for us to stand together to let the gas industry know that they will have no easy access.

We will advise of a public meeting in the near future to discuss this further.

WONDERFUL YOUNG CITIZEN

Recently the school received a phone call from a local community member. Our students have been knocking on doors around town to solicit sponsors for the school Fun Run.

Yvette Ellis rang the school to express her delight at the maturity and manners displayed by one of our young students, Jamie Constable, when he knocked on her door.

Yvette said Jamie was a credit to the school and our local community. Well done Jamie !

GP SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY OF MERRIWA

Hunter Medicare Local is working with all relevant stakeholders to coordinate appropriate short-term and long-term GP service provisions to the Merriwa community.

Plans for short-term coverage involve organising GP locum support from Merriwa Surgery until towards the end of May. Current locum arrangements include full-time GP locum support until 12 April and additional full-time GP locum support from 12 April for 2 weeks. Efforts continue to secure GP locum support for another four weeks beyond that time. Part-time GP locum support has been offered to cover this period if full-time support is unavailable.

Ongoing GP support is being provided from the Merriwa MPS every second Thursday.

Plans for long-term service provision involve ongoing discussions with GPs who have expressed interest in the option of providing services from Merriwa on a permanent basis.

Hunter Medicare Local will continue to provide updates on this situation.

New online think tank to help convert good ideas into great local projects!

A whole lot of bright ideas for community projects in regional and rural communities was launched earlier this month.

The invitation from Hunter Mutual is to use a new online forum to collaborate with fellow passionate community leaders and is open to everyone to use. The credit union also announced a video competition Make A Difference for under 25-year-olds with $2,500 prize money for the makers and the same amount for the organisation they highlight.

Hunter Mutual CEO Kevin Dupé said website had already had a test run with local people suggesting a movie projector for the Youth Centre in Murrurundi; breakfast top-ups for kids in schools at Merriwa. Other communities such as Guyra are pitching for community fitness trails to be constructed, revamping an iconic building at Moonbi into an art house coffee shop, and even going as far as to recommend a giant slide from atop the Lookout in Armidale.

The site, heartofourcommunity.com.au, is being rolled out to all communities served by

the credit union in the Hunter, Orana and New England/North West, regions he said.

“The sky is the limit in terms of concepts for projects but the key, which could be delivered through the website, is to gather like-minded individuals to give their support and become involved,” he explained. “There’s no shortage of ideas in any community but implementing them takes a dedicated team and the website is ideal for networking.

“The response to the trial has been terrific. People have been proposing all sorts of projects along with graphics and invitations for others to give their feedback. It creates quite a buzz and that, hopefully, will produce the momentum.”

Mr Dupé said the site was a natural extension of the CMG involvement in community life through sponsorships, donations and staff fundraising and volunteer work. At a launch breakfast earlier this month in Armidale, chair of the $300,000 Tamworth Marsupial Park Playground committee Charley Impey reinforced the strength of community participation through networking to gather volunteers for big projects. Darren Schaefer, Community Mutual Group Executive Manager for Marketing said the concept of the site was to give communities a voice. “The functionality allows community members to upload their ideas, community initiatives or events, with the support of a description and images,” he said. “Once uploaded they can get others to ‘like’ their idea on face book, vote for it, attract comments on it or even start a petition for it.”

Participants in the video competition are asked to make a video on the topic “What is making, or could make, a difference in your local community?” and in addition to the prize money the winning entries will also be shown during the North West Film Festival at the Roxy Theatre in Bingara on 13 - 14 September. Information on the website and video competition can be f o u n d o n h t t p s : / /www.heartofourcommunity.com.au and https://www.hear to fourcommunity.com.au/mad

Machinery and Car Dealers are much like the rest of our community, some good, some not so good, and the rest falling somewhere in between. While I did say I worked for Mercedes-Benz, strictly speaking that is incorrect because it was actually Yorkstar Motors Pty Ltd which had the Mercedes-Benz Car and Commercial Vehicle distribution franchise for NSW and ACT. Yorkstar was a wholly owned subsidiary of York Motors Ltd, a public company listed on the Stock Exchange and at the time probably the most prestigious of all such companies. They not only had the Mercedes-Benz franchise through Yorkstar, but also Rolls Royce and Bentley in their own name as well as the distribution of Toyota passenger vehicles in NSW and ACT. At one time they also had, and perhaps still had, another company, Lancaster Motors. Their choice of those two names was no doubt a reflection of the Australian ethos at the time these companies were formed about 1932 at the height of the Great Depression. In those days Australia was still a very British nation which not only revered Britain, but our security was dependant on its Royal Navy, also its supposedly impregnable shield of Singapore protecting Australia from any possible attacks from the north. Indeed, looking back, and although we only half realised it at the time, it was the fall of Singapore in early 1942, and our turning to the USA for help, which was the great turning point in our feelings for, and dependence on, Britain and the British Empire which in any case would within a few years almost completely disappear.

York Motors Ltd was a very conservative company in a conservative Australia, and it would be difficult to think of two more English names than York and Lancaster. These two

WOOLBROOK RURAL INDUSTRIES

great Houses, whose symbols were respectively the Red Rose and White Rose, were both members of the Plantagenet Family, though this did not stop them fighting each other for many years for the throne of England during the second half of the fifteenth century in a conflict known as the War of the Roses. The final outcome saw the Tudors established on the throne of England, notably Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and their reigns were of great significance to Britain even though they were both bloodthirsty rulers in a bloodthirsty age. I say this because, at the end of the reign of the childless Elizabeth, the last Tudor, England had been transformed from a second or third rate almost backwater power to a position where she was able to challenge the two dominant European nations at that time, France and Spain. She then fought wars with both for hundreds of years, culminating in her overwhelming victories at Trafalgar and Waterloo. After that Britain ruled the oceans and enlarged her Empire almost unhindered for more than a century till two world wars and the fall of Singapore not only saw the beginning of her end as a world power but also the disintegration of her empire, the greatest the world had ever seen.

I thought York Motors Ltd still retained a Great Depression mentality, which suited me, also that they so obviously watched their costs with great care; indeed to survive they had to because their accounts, which were publicly available every year as a Public Company, showed a profit margin of about 4% of turnover, and with such a slim margin even a small hiccup can spell much red ink at the end of the financial year. Their claim was that they had never failed to pay a dividend, and their reputation was that they would pay the last penny they owed and sue for the last penny

owed them. I remember that, when years later I became General Manager, the names of customers who had been placed on COD arrived on my desk every week. One day I was surprised to see the Reserve Bank of Australia on that list, so I rang the Credit Manager and said “Bluey, what are you doing!” and he said “Max, they owe us money, we cannot get it out of them, and even though it is no doubt just an administrative error, if anyone is 60 days overdue I don’t care who they are, they are on COD”. He told me later that he had the money within a week.

York Motors was both an absolutely dead honest company and good to work for, indeed those who did their job satisfactorily needed fear the sack for only two reasons. The first was “dudding” the company in any way, the penalty was immediate and final, and Yorks

were long aware of all the methods by which this could be done. One was by putting a mate’s name in for an undeserved spotter’s fee, and I can recall several biting the dust for this reason, though it did take the company a little while to become aware it was happening. Another method was selling trades to a mate for less than true value and pocketing part of the resulting profit, and it was totally forbidden to make so much as a dollar from the motor trade in any way except through York Motors, and this seemed fair and logical to me. The Company Secretary, a very suspicious, cynical and disbelieving man, seemed to have a nose for anything suspicious, and during my time one or two went overboard after he detected “dodgy” trade deals.

NRMA STORY BOOK

‘Did I Wake You?’ Is a collection of both actual and humorous events occurring to and written by Country Road Service Petrol's, from the 1920 until today. It details the ingenious ways the patrolman of yesteryear fashioned their own parts and recalls valiant snakes, fixing TV sets and rescuing members from floods, B&S balls and outdoor loos.

NRMA will be placing small inserts from these articles in future Ringers. So look forward to reading the short stories of the NRMA patrol men who have been to great strengths helping customers.
