ENGINE

General

Massey Ferguson 500 Series tractors use the world famous Perkins diesel engines. Perkins has a long reputation as a premium engine manufacturer and can be found in many applications, from tractors and irrigation pumps, to road trucks and fork lifts. Over the years, Perkins has manufactured more than 15,000,000 engines. With a population and application history like that, parts and service are easy to find and economically priced. The Perkins 1100 series uses an open top deck block to reduce noise, improve cooling flow and hence minimize NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) and cooling requirements for the engine. Also, oil consumption has been halved through the improved bore shape and revised honing technology used in this new block design. All Perkins engines have a long 5-inch stroke. This equates to higher torque specifications and a wider operating range. The rated engine speed is 2200 rpm for all 500 series tractors, and maximum torque occurs between 1200 and 1400 rpm. This wide operating range supplies a large torque backup. In the field, this means less shifting and better performance. Glow plugs are standard equipment in the 500 series tractors for assistance in cold weather starting, and engine block heaters can be installed in the field for added cold weather starting assistance.

TRANSMISSION

The 8F x 2R manual transmission is available equipment on the 573 and 583 platform models. It provides eight forward speeds and two reverse speeds that are controlled by two shift levers. The right hand lever controls the range box (two ranges) and the left hand lever controls the main transmission gears (four forward speeds and one reverse speed). The transmission is a non-synchronized sliding gear type that require the tractor to come to a stop before shifting. This is a value priced feature that makes it the economical choice for general utility work. An 8F x 8R mechanical shuttle transmission is available equipment on the 573 and 583 platform and cab models. It provides a forward speed and reverse speed for each of the eight gears. There are three control levers on the platform: The left hand lever on the transmission cover controls the main transmission gears (four speeds in “H” pattern) - The right hand lever controls the planetary range box (two ranges) - The synchronized shuttle lever, located to the left of the steering wheel, allows the operator to shift between forward and reverse. There are synchronizers in the shuttle and in the 4-speed gearbox to make shifting easier on the go without gear grinding (ideal for loader work). The cab models have a right hand shift lever with the synchronized shuttle lever located to the left of the steering wheel. The 573, 583, 593, and 596 cab versions are available with the 12F x 4R partially synchronized transmission. It is managed by two ranges, a four speed gearbox, and an additional splitter range (Hi/Lo). A 4:1 reduction creeper gearbox is available, factory installed, for the 573 and 583 platform models with either transmission. It consists of a separate gearbox that can be fitted behind the standard gearbox.

8F x 2R Sliding Gear Transmission The design provides two slow gears, four gears in the fieldwork speed range and two transport gears. The right hand lever controls the range box (two ranges) and the left hand lever con-trols the main transmission gears (four forward speeds and one reverse speed). The trans-mission is a non-synchronized sliding gear type that require the tractor to come to a stop before shifting. This transmission is value priced, has a long service life, and good productivity in util-ity work.

8 X 8 Synchronized Shuttle The design provides mechanical synchronized shuttle transmission with left-hand shuttle con-trol. It provides a forward speed and reverse speed for each of the eight gears. On platform models there are three control levers: The left hand lever on the transmission cover controls the main transmission gears (four speeds in “H” pattern) - The right hand lever controls the planetary range box (two ranges). In cab mod-els there is one control lever to the right of the operator. The synchronized shuttle lever, lo-cated to the left of the steering wheel , allows the operator to shift between forward and re-verse. There are synchronizers in the shuttle and in the 4-speed gearbox to make shifting easier on the go without gear grinding (ideal for loader work).

12F x 4R Transmission The partially synchronized transmission is managed by two ranges, a four speed gearbox, and an additional splitter range (Hi/Lo). The design provides four slow gears, five gears in the fieldwork speed range, and three transport gears. The transmission is controlled by three center shift levers on platform models and two side shift levers in cab models.

Creeper The optional creeper range provides a 4:1 re-duction. The first speed is as low as 0.4 mph (35.2 feet/minute at rated speed), and 6 speeds are below 2 mph. Allows the tractor to be used in more applications without purchas-ing a specialty. It provides very slow speeds for applications like transplanting, vegetable harvesting, and turf aeration.

Planetary Hi/Lo Range Box Provides a reduction in the drive train ratio that doubles the number of speeds available. Makes for better speed matching for higher productivity and long service life. The plane-tary gears can handle high torque loads.

CLUTCH

A time tested dual-stage main clutch is standard equipment on 573 and 583 platform tractors. The first stage of the clutch pedal travel disengages the 12” main disc, which controls the transmission. The second stage of the clutch pedal travel controls the smaller 10” PTO disc and shaft. This arrangement allows for a "live" PTO, maintaining control of both the tractor drive and PTO on the same pedal. When equipped with the independent PTO (IPTO), the tractor utilizes a split torque clutch. A single clutch plate supplies power only to the transmission. The PTO is driven directly from the clutch cover and engaged independently by a hydraulic clutch pack. This provides easy operation and independent control of the PTO. On all the models, clutch and brake pedals are suspended to improve operator comfort. The pedals follow the natural movement of the operator’s legs and the linkage geometry is designed to ensure minimum pedal effort.

FRONT AXLE

The 2WD front axle on the MF 500 Series tractors is a square box in box design. This allows for easy tread adjustment (in 4-inch increments) by sliding the box in or out after removing the bolts. The box section is very strong and will handle the stress of approved front-end loaders. A steering angle of 50 to 55 degrees provides an excellent turning radius for tight headland turns and easy maneuvering around farm yards. The 4WD axles feature a single piece cast center beam with open CV joints for excellent strength in demanding operations. The axle provides a maximum turning angle of 50 to 52 degrees for good maneuverability and tight turning. The axle used on the 573 and 583 is a parallel drive system with offset differential, and the axle used on the 593 and 596 is a center line drive system with center differential. The parallel drive design allows the center of gravity to remain low for stability without sacrificing ground clearance or turning angle. The power front axle is driven from the rear differential pinion shaft. Two idler gears transmit the power to the side or lower engagement clutch. The 4WD can be engaged on the go via an over-center clutch, which is controlled by a handle located to the operators left. When 4WD is required, simply push the handle down. There is no need to stop or use the clutch.

DIFFERENTIAL, BRAKES AND FINAL DRIVE

The rear axle housings of the Massey Ferguson 500 Series tractors are made of square section cast iron for exceptional strength. With the lower horsepower rating of these tractors, the torque loading is not as high and reliability is excellent. This design is time tested and has been used in the lower horsepower MF tractors for many years. The MF500 Series tractors feature final drives that consist of outboard planetary gear sets. These units provide a speed reduction at the tire and wheel, which reduces the torque loads in the drive train. This gives the drive train longer life and allows for the physical size of the components to be reduced, giving a compact, lightweight assembly. These tractors have multiple wet disc brakes for sure stopping and durability. The outboard planetary sets assist with braking efficiency due to the high speed and low torque characteristics of the drive line before the final reduction. The oil-immersed discs add to the life as the oil acts to cool the brake discs, reducing the wear rate. The differential lock secures the rear axle shafts together to improve traction in adverse conditions by limiting individual wheel slippage. The locking mechanism is a dog-toothed sliding collar that engages mechanically. The dogtooth design ensures a complete mechanical lock and eliminates any frictional plates that may slip or wear. A foot pedal behind the operator's right heel controls the engagement.

Axle Housing Square axle housings with a 10,000 lb. static load rating on the rear axles. The high capaci-ties ensure the integrity of the axles under ex-treme loading conditions such as lifting large round bales.

Outboard Planetary Final Drives Maintain higher speeds and lower torque loads through the drive train. Smaller components allow the overall weight to be lower without high stress loading.

Wet Disc Brake Caliper The oil immersed multiple disc brakes provide a large frictional area for stopping. The oil cools the discs and lowers the wear rate.

3-POINT HITCH

The Ferguson System, developed by Henry Ferguson, has been used for over six decades in Massey Ferguson tractors. By using an inlet controlled scotch yoke piston pump and a few resourceful 3-point linkage designs, the Ferguson System offers effective and precise control of the 3-point hitch. Located in the center housing and driven by the PTO shaft, the Ferguson Pump consists of four pistons and an inlet control valve. Oil flow can be controlled more precisely when it is not under pressure, so the Ferguson pump controls the amount of oil going into the pump. By only supplying oil to the pump when needed, the power requirement is minimized and heat build up is lowered. The linkage is designed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the Ferguson System. The draft arms are attached to the tractor in front of and below the rear axle. As draft increases, the position of the draft arms act to pull the front end of the tractor down, making the front end heavier. The converging draft arms are designed in such a way that the lines of draft intersect or converge at the front, center of the tractor. This prevents any side loading that may occur and increases traction making the tractor easier to handle. Draft control allows the operator to maintain a consistent draft or resistance to pull. As soil characteristics change throughout a field, draft control will automatically raise or lower the implement to diminish the fluctuations in tractor performance. The Ferguson System helps control the depth of an implement by sensing draft through the top link. Consider a tractor and plow traveling over a hill, as the tractor starts up the hill, the plow will penetrate deeper into the ground. Depth control will sense the increased draft from the deeper furrow and will lift the implement until the draft, or depth returns to where the operator had set it. When the tractor rounds the top of the hill, the plow will tend to lift out of the ground, and the depth control will lower the implement to maintain the pre-selected working depth. Position control is used with implements that require a constant depth or height relative to the tractor. In use, this will give a constant cutting height when rotary cutting, will maintain a constant depth with a scraper blade, or will ensure even spreading widths when broadcast spreading fertilizer or grass seed.

Ferguson Pump The Ferguson pump is located in the bottom of the center housing. The pump is submerged in oil providing lubrication and heat dissipation. It is inlet controlled allowing for precise oil flows, which increases accuracy of 3-point linkage for better performance. It supplies 4.5 gpm in the MF 573 and MF 583, and 7.0 gpm in the MF 593 and MF 596. .

3-Point Linkage Geometry The draft arms are attached below and in front of the rear axle to increase weight transfer, the links are converging, which helps the tractor handle better.

Top Link Sensing Top link sensing reacts to the changes in draft through rotational forces more accurately with fully mounted implements. This provides greater accuracy for better performance.

3-Point Hitch Float Position The link between the lift arms and the lower arms allows three positions to connect. The first is a fixed type and the second one allows a 2” vertical float movement. This allows the im-plement to follow the working depth set by gauge wheels.

3-Point Arm Support The 3-point arms are linked to the rear axle near the bottom. The two position holes allow the fixing height to be changed, which will change the ball end height. This adjustment can be used to change the lift height of mounted implements.

3-Point Hitch Top Arm Support The 3-point arm is linked to the rear axle at the draft sensing unit. The three position holes al-low the sensitivity of the response to be changed and will also change the ball end lift height. This allows for quicker response to soil changes and wider implement adaptation.

POWER TAKE OFF A live PTO is standard equipment on the 573 & 583 platform tractors. It utilizes a dual stage foot clutch to control both the transmission and the PTO. The lower or second stage of the pedal travel disengages the smaller clutch disc, which is connected to the PTO shaft. The PTO driveline has a sliding coupler that engages or disengages the output shaft. This ar-rangement is cost effective, efficient, provides full disengagement for easy implement hook up, and allows the implement to be brought up to speed before moving to prevent engine lug down. Independent power take off (IPTO) is standard equipment on 573, 583, 593, and 596 cab models, and optional on 573 and 583 platform models. IPTO uses a split torque transmission clutch with a continuously driven IPTO shaft. Drive to the IPTO output shaft is controlled by a hydraulic clutch pack, operated using a lever. This allows the IPTO to be engaged/disengaged at any time without stopping the tractor. The hydraulic PTO clutch provides auto-matic modulation during start up, reducing the shock load on the implement. The PTO system is designed to achieve the designated PTO speed at engine rpms as low as 1908. This allows the engine to run at a higher torque rating under full load, helping prevent lug down and the need to change ground speed. In most cases, when the engine runs slower, it requires less fuel, so the design also saves on fuel expenses.

“Live” PTO A two-stage clutch and sliding coupler en-gages and disengages the PTO driveline. The Live PTO is engaged with one lever lo-cated left of the seat.

Independent PTO Independent PTO provides separate control for PTO engagement independent of tractor travel. A built in brake ensures there is no rotation of the PTO when it’s disengaged. The PTO clutch is located behind the Fergu-son pump and driven by the same shaft. More productivity and less parts are involved. This also adds convenience and security and no need to use the foot clutch to operate. The Independent is engaged with one lever lo-cated left of the seat.

Dual 540/1000 rpm IPTO (only available on 593 and 596) Allows the use of a variety of implements simply by changing the shaft. * 1000 RPM shaft must be ordered through Parts. (Not included with the tractor.)

HYDRAULICS

The Massey Ferguson 500 Series tractors have an open center hydraulic system that supplies oil to the auxiliary hydraulic remote valves, hydrostatic power steering system, and 3-point hitch. The 500 Series tractors use an engine driven, dual element gear type hydraulic pump: The primary element provides a dedicated flow to power steering and the auxiliary remote valves are supplied by the secondary element. This external hydraulic system is a means of supplying uninterrupted power in the form of pressurized hydraulic oil flow to operate external services and implements. A Ferguson Pump, mounted in the transmission housing of each 500 series tractor, is also standard equipment and supplies oil to the 3-point hitch. A combining valve can direct the oil flow from the Ferguson pump to the remote spool valves, increasing the total flow available to the remotes. This valve is standard equipment on the 500 series tractors. The combining valve has two positions: linkage and external operation. The linkage position maintains the original two independent oil flows, which enable simultaneous operation of the 3-point linkage and remote valves. The external position redirects the oil flow from the Ferguson pump to the remote valves, bypassing the 3-point hitch (the link arms remain in a fixed position). An integral shock valve protects the internal ram circuit from high-induced pressures caused by shock loads. Combining the flows enables faster hydraulic cycle times for increased productivity.

Hydraulic Pump The pump is an engine mounted double gear type pump. The first stage provides uninter-rupted hydraulic flow to the hydrostatic steer-ing, and the second stage supplies flow to the remotes valves. This increases the versatility and maneuverability of the tractor.

Combining Valve The combining valve directs the Ferguson pump oil flow from the 3-point hitch to the re-mote valves. Using the combining valve in-creases the flow available at the remotes. The Ferguson pump must be in constant pumping and the 3-point hitch will be locked in position. This improves hydraulic cycle times, allowing the operator to complete a task more quickly.

Hydraulic Valves Control Levers Ergonomic design for quick and easy use. Convenient location to the right side of the driver seat.
