The ceremonial opening of Massandra Winery whereby the Russian Emperor was present took place in the Crimea in 1894. The first 1,200 bottles of red port-wine called Livadia, made of the grape harvested in 1891, were laid down for storage at the said facility. This kind of wine is favored by the Russian Czar Nicholas II.

The heir of “coMMissaire MaigreT” in LonDonskaya hoTeL

The second half of August was marked by a significant event for Londonskaya Hotel. Here came John Simenon – the son of the famous author of “Commissaire Maigret” – George Simenon who stayed at Londonskaya Hotel with his first wife – an artist Regin Ranshon, during his first visit to the Soviet Union in 1933. It was a memory visit for John who was willing to see those memorable places of Odessa that his father took pictures of long ago.The hotel managers helped John to search all the places that could be seen in old photos, and he took wonderful pictures of new Odessa.The honored guest had a pleasant stay at Londonskaya Hotel that combines modern comfort and rich historical traditions, and he left Odessa with exclusive gifts from the hotel.The pictures from Mr. Simenon’s personal archive enabled to find out where George Simenon lived with his wife in 1933. From now on Room 202 has a memorable photo of the prominent guest.

Для Джона это был визит памяти, путешествие сына по следам его знаме-нитого отца. Ему хотелось увидеть своими глазами те памятные места Одессы, которые запечатлел его отец на фотографиях три четверти века назад.Менеджеры гостиницы помогли разыскать все запечат-ленные на старинных фото места, и Джон смог сфотогра-фировать изменившуюся Одессу.Именитый гость остался доволен пребыванием в «Лон-донской», в которой сочетаются современный комфорт и богатейшие историко-культурные традиции, и уехал с эксклюзивными подарками от отеля.Фотографии из личного архива г-на Сименона помогли выяснить, в каком именно номере проживали Жорж Сименон с женой в 1933 году, поскольку архивы за этот год не сохранились. циозного архитектора, эксцентричного джентльмена и за-ядлого охотника.

Чудак-архитектор, создавший одно из самых ярких украше-ний Киева – Дом с химерами, первоклассный художник, франт, носившийся в щегольском кожаном костюме на одном из пер-вых легковых авто, поклонник эпатажа, прогуливавшийся с обезьянкой на плече, страстный охотник и путешественник, издавший о своих африканских странствиях книгу с собствен-ными рисунками и фотографиями, авиатор-любитель, творец театральных декораций и дизайнер нарядов – вот какой образ Городецкого стоит за созданными им шедеврами, и все, за что он брался, отмечено печатью его таланта, смешанного с экс-центричностью и духом историзма.

В Киеве Владислав Городецкий поселился в 1891 году и за следующие 30 лет возвел в нем немало сооружений, а также принимал активное участие в строительстве как консультант и оформитель. Первыми его работами стали деревянный стрелецкий тир и мраморная усыпальница баронов Штейн-гелей на Аскольдовой могиле.

Mr. Gorodetsky was a strange architect who designed the Chimeras House, one of the most vivid architectural sights in Kiev. He was a top class painter and dandy who raced around the town on a motorcar, by then one of the first ones in Kiev. He liked shocking behavior and would walk around with a little monkey on his shoulder. He was an ardent hunter and traveler who published a book about his wanderings in Africa with his own drawings and photo-graphs. He was also an amateur airman, a creator of theatrical stage sceneries and a fashion designer. This all can be said about Wladyslaw Gorodetsky whose image

о них истории и легенды. n Each town looks its own way. It is like a specific face made up by a number of

separate features like age, history, people, autobuses, parks, rivers and channels, bridges, street lanterns,

and, of course, buildings. The latter can make a town look faceless or, to the contrary, shape it into a specific

appearance, to become a magnet that would attract people to such buildings time and time again, to visualize

people’s own mindset, and to invent stories and legends dedicated to those buildings.

Дальше были Южнорусский машиностроительный завод, цементный завод «Тон», павильоны Потоцких для Всероссий-ской выставки 1907 года, дом Лейбы Бендерского на Большой Васильковской, некоторые здания на Николаевской улице (ныне ул. Городецкого), дом Русского страхового товарищества на углу Прорезной и Крещатика, где 1-й этаж занимала люби-мая киевлянами кондитерская «Жорж», и другие.

Об этих зданиях вспоминают нечасто, а вот Национальный художественный музей Украины, Караимская кенаса, Нико-лаевский костел и, конечно же, Дом с химерами – прекрасные памятники творчества гениального зодчего.

Здание тогда еще Городского музея древностей и искусств досталось Городецкому «в наследство» от другого архитек-тора, оставившего строительство из-за изменений в про-екте. Городецкий взялся за непростую задачу – завершить грандиозную постройку, имея в своем распоряжении весьма скудный бюджет: комитет Общества любителей древности сумел собрать лишь половину требуемой для постройки суммы. Архитектор решил эту проблему: роскошный фасад в виде античного храма притягивает к себе все внимание, и мало кто замечает остальную часть здания. Грозные львы, сторожащие вход, – произведение талантливого скульпто-ра, миланца Элио Саля, работы которого украсили многие здания Городецкого.

В это же время на деньги киевских табачных магнатов бра-тьев Соломона и Моисея Когенов Городецкий построил молит-венный дом для общины караимов – кенасу – на теперешнем Ярославовом валу. Получилось величественное сооружение в мавританском стиле с резными каменными арабесками, на-поминающее сказочные дворцы правителей Гранадского эми-рата. Глава караимов был так впечатлен зданием, что доверил Владиславу строительство собственной усадьбы в Евпатории – духовной столице караимов.

Костел Св. Николая в долине речки Лыбидь – еще одна работа, которую поручили проектировать и контролировать Владиславу. Грунты в этом месте оказались очень неустойчи-выми, и Городецкий впервые в Киеве применил для фундамен-та набивные бетонные сваи. Сам костел стал примером тра-диционного для Городецкого духа историзма и гармоничного сочетания разных стилей. Две его стрельчатые башни высотой 62 метра, готическая роза и элегантные скульптуры руки того же Элио Саля сделали костел одним из самых изящных укра-шений Киева начала XX века.

Но, конечно же, загадочный Дом с химерами остается ярчай-шим произведением фантазера-архитектора и своеобразной гордостью Киева, куда киевляне любят приводить своих гостей. Этот дом сделал Городецкого по-настоящему знаменитым, ви-димо, в этом и заключалась его основная цель: потрясти по-чтенную публику и всколыхнуть город. И публика действитель-

stands behind his masterpieces and art-works. Everything he would undertake was marked up with his versatile talent mixed with his eccentricity and historical spirit.

Wladyslaw Gorodetsky settled down in Kiev in 1891 and erected many installa-tions over the next thirty years thereafter. He also took an active part in construction works as advisor and designer. His first projects were the wooden shooting gallery and the burial vault for the Steingel barons at the Askold Grave.

Later on, there were the South Russian Machine Building Factory, the ‘Ton’ Cement Mill, the Potocki showrooms for the All-Russian Expo held in 1907, Leiba Bender-sky’s house at velyka vasilkivska Street, a number of buildings at nikolayevska (now called Gorodetsky) Street, and the building of the Russian Insurance Company at the corner of Prorizna Street and Kreshcha-tik Street where the ground floor housed George pastry shop favored by the Kiev residents, as well as some other projects.

The abovementioned buildings and loca-tions are not widely remembered by general public, unlike the building of the national Museum of Arts of the Ukraine, the Karaite temple, St. nicholas catholic church and, certainly, the Chimeras House. These all are splendid masterpieces created by this genius of architecture.

Mr. Gorodetsky had ‘inherited’ the build-ing of the Municipal Museum of Antiqui-ties and Arts from another architect who stopped the construction works due to some changes in the project. Horodecki attempted to do a difficult job; to complete that im-mense construction project with rather scarce funding he could afford because the Antiquity Admirers Society commission managed to accumulate only half of the amount required to complete the construc-tion works. The famous architect succeeded in solving this problem; the magnificent façade looking like an antique temple catches the eye entirely and thus just a few spectators notice the rest of the building. The formidable lions guarding the entrance were made by Elio Sala, a gifted sculptor from Milan, who decorated many buildings designed by Gorodetsky.

At the same time, brothers Solomon and Moses Kogen, two tobacco tycoons from Kiev, provided finance to Mr. Gorodetsky to build ‘kenassa’, a worship place for the community of Karaites, at what nowadays is Yaroslaviv val. It turned out to be a gran-diose Moresque style temple with carved arabesques. The temple resembled the fairy-tale palaces of the sovereigns of the Granada Emirate. The head of the Karaite communi-ty was very much impressed by the temple, so he contracted Mr. Gorodetsky to build

his own mansion in Eupatorium, the Karaite spiritual capital in the Crimea.

St. nicholas catholic church located at the bank of the Lybid river was another project where Wladyslaw Gorodetsky was in charge of design and construction manage-ment. The ground was very unstable in that place, and for this reason Mr. Gorodetsky was the first in Kiev to use drilled-in cais-sons made of concrete. The church itself became a sample of the history spirit typical for Gorodetsky and his ability to combine different styles. The church has two arrow-headed towers, each 62 meters in height, as well as a gothic rose and elegant sculptures by Elio Sala. These features rated the temple among the most graceful attractions of Kiev in the early days of the 20th century.

Still, the Chimeras House remains the most vivid artwork by this fantasy-influenced architect and creates a piece of the city’s pride oftentimes shown to the Kiev visitors. This building made the architect a really famous person, and that was, perhaps, the ultimate purpose of his undertaking; to shake up the respectable citizens and to deeply impress the city in general. And the public was shocked indeed, for people started inventing legends about the building. One of those legends said that the building was erected in memory of the architect’s daughter who drowned or his wife who died of consumption, while another legend said it was a gift to his mistress. Много сомнительных историй существует и до сих пор, одно известно со-вершенно точно: дом пред-назначался для сдачи ши-карных квартир внаем, а заодно и для проживания в нем самого мастера. Как бы там ни было, но Городец-кий заметил верно: «Дом, конечно, странноватый, но, поверьте, не найдется в Киеве человека, который не удостоит его взглядом».

А «удостоить взглядом» действительно есть что. У дома на крутом южном склоне Крещатицкой долины с одной стороны три, а с другой шесть этажей, его стены украшены скульптур-ными изображениями носорогов, жирафов, львов, крокодилов и антилоп. На крыше восседают жабы и тритоны, в колоннах извиваются ящерицы и змеи. Есть здесь и наяды верхом на дельфинах, и слоновьи головы над подъездом, свисающие хо-боты которых доставляли столько радости киевским мальчиш-кам. Вода, текущая из пасти носорога, гигантский светильник в лестничном проеме, изображающий огромного сома в стеблях лотоса, лепнина на потолке в виде спрута, тонущие корабли, рога и черепа – фантазия автора не знала удержу, а мастерская братьев Саля помогала воплотить его замыслы в бетоне.

Каждый этаж дома занимала одна квартира, и для каждой мастер построил винный погреб, каретный сарай, стойло для лошадей, сделал для всех холодную комнату и даже ко-ровник – жильцы должны были пить только свежее молоко! Сам Городецкий занимал лучшую квартиру из 10 комнат под номером 3. Жильцы каждый день поднимались по лестнице, украшенной купидонами и диковинными птицами. Стены дома были расписаны картинами на охотничью тематику – предмет особого обожания Владислава. В общем, дом не мог не вызывать многочисленных пересудов и, в итоге, стал од-ним из украшений Киева.

Весной 1920 года большевики конфисковали всю соб-ственность Городецкого, и он с женой перебрался в Варшаву. Зодчий активно работал в Польше, затем уехал в Тегеран, где и умер в 1930 году.

Его творения в Киеве постигла разная участь: большевики устроили в Николаевском костеле склад, а в Доме с химерами – номенклатурную поликлинику, они разрушили купол кенасы и уничтожили усыпальницу Штейнгелей вместе со всем клад-бищем на Аскольдовой могиле, а здание, где когда-то распола-галось кафе «Жорж», было взорвано после отхода Красной Армии из Киева. Но Дом с химерами, несмотря ни на что, вы-жил, после реставрации он стал Малой резиденцией приемов президента Украины, сюда иногда приводят экскурсионные группы. Николаевская улица теперь носит имя архитектора Го-родецкого, а его бронзовая скульптура рассматривает киевлян из-за летнего столика кафе в Пассаже. 0

were also rumors that Mr. Gorodetsky made a bet with other architects to construct a building at a location totally unsuitable for it. Many dubious stories may still be heard, but one thing is for sure; the building was intended as a luxury place for rent and for the architect himself to live in.

Each apartment occupied one storey of the building and for each apartment Mr. Gorodetsky designed separate wine storage, coach garage, horse stable, cool storage room and even cow house as the dwellers had to drink fresh milk only! Wladyslaw Gorodet-sky himself took the best apartment #3 con-sisting of ten rooms. The building’s dwellers used to walk up and down the stairway decorated with cupids and miraculous birds. The walls of the building had paintings dedi-cated to hunting as Wladyslaw was an ardent hunter himself. All in all, this building was a great success and finally became one of the strongest attractions in Kiev.

In spring of 1920, the Bolsheviks came and seized the entire property of Mr. Goro-detsky, so he and his wife moved to Warsaw. The architect worked in Poland very hard, then went to Tehran where he died in 1930.

Different things happened to the Goro-detsky’s creations in Kiev as years went by. The Russian Bolsheviks turned the St. nicholas church into a storage facility and used the Chimeras House as a healthcare establishment for high ranked officials of the Communist party. They also destroyed the cupola of the Karaite kenassa and demol-ished the burial vault of the Steingel family at the Askold Grave. The building where the cafe George had been located was burst up as the Red Army retreated from Kiev.

Still, the Chimeras House was lucky to survive despite all bad things along its way. It is now the small residence for the President of Ukraine and guided tours are sometimes undertaken around the place. The former nikolayevska Street is nowadays called Gorodetsky Street in memory of the brilliant architect whose bronze statue now looks at the Kiev people from behind a table of an outdoor cafe at the Passage. 0

Древний семисотлетний исполин сумел уцелеть после разру-шительного землетрясения, пережить восемь войн и сменить множество владельцев. Это настоящее родовое гнездо, в ко-тором чувствуются былые могущество и сила.

С ХIv по Хv век крепость испытала многочисленные напа-дения, менялись ее хозяева – от галицко-волынского князя Гедиминовича до польского короля Казимира III. К концу ХvI века замок был сильно поврежден. Но его реконструи-ровал магнат Станислав Жолкевский. Однако и его средства вскоре исчерпались, и уже в 1605 году замок перешел в соб-ственность Даниловичей.

С представителями этих двух фамилий связаны романтиче-ские и трагические предания… То ли ветерок пронесся по опустевшим к ночи залам, то ли шуршат украшения на бле-стящем камзоле. А вдруг это вздох души, которая не может найти покоя…

Один из потомков Жолкевского молодой шляхтич Адам был безнадежно влюблен в дочь Даниловича Марианну. Можно только гадать, отвечала ли она взаимностью юноше. THE CASTLE In THE TOWn OF OLESSKO was built on a hill and can be seen from far away. Its strong walls go upward to form an inaccessible monticle, which becomes even tighter as our view approaches the hilltop. This ancient forti-fied giant has lived through seven hundred years and survived a devastating earth-quake, eight wars, and frequent changes of its numerous owners. It was a true home to several feudal families and the might and power of the old days can still be felt there.

In the 14th to 15th centuries, there were many attacks on the castle and its owners used to shift frequently, ranging from the king Gedeminas of the Galych and volyn Kingdom to the Polish king Kazimierz III. The castle remained seriously damaged in the late 16th century, but the Polish mag-nate Stanislaw Zolkiewski cared to restore it later. However, even this extremely rich feudal eventually ran out of his money, so the castle became the property of the Da-nylowicz family.

Замок и правда колдовское место. В 1629 году здесь родился внук Даниловича, будущий король Польши Ян ІІІ Собеский. В зрелые годы он снискал себе славу выдающегося полковод-ца. Может, история рождения определила его батальную судьбу? В тот день грохотала гроза, а замок подверг-ся нападению очередных завоевателей. Но легенда не была бы легендой без знаменательного эпизода. Когда бабка-повитуха принесла новорожденного и положила его на черный мраморный стол, грянул сильнейший раскат грома. Мраморная столешни-ца треснула, раскололась, а сама повитуха оглохла. В замке не сомневались: это пророчество неба.

ХvII век изрядно потрепал старый замок. А в сле-дующем столетии, в 1725 году, один из потомков Собеского, Константин, продал все Олеско богатому роду Жевуских. Однако молодые наследники старого Жевуского, несмотря на большое богатство, вскоре без всяких войн и сражений довели замок и его окрестности фактически до разрухи. Сменявшие один другой пышные балы и кутежи в замковых залах закончились. В конце кон-цов, долги заставили Жевуских продать все их имения – они ушли с молотка.

…A young local magnate named Adam, one of Zolkiewski’s descendants, des-

perately fell in love with Marianna, the daughter of Governor Dany-

lowicz. We do not know for sure if she ever returned that feeling to Adam, but her sever father was getting strongly irritated with Adam’s constant attempts to arrange their wedding for the young man was rather poor

at that time. One day, as the feu-dal lords were playing cards with

each other, Mr. Danylowicz said his final ‘no’ to Adam. In response, the

guy killed himself so that all other people present could see his suicide. Adam’s kin-dred decided not to bury him at his family’s clannish cemetery. Finally, as the local peo-ple say, the poor fellow sometimes walks around the castle with a knife in his chest.

The Olessko castle is indeed a mysterious place. Jan III Sobieski, the grandson of Da-nylowicz and the future king of Poland, was born here in 1629. As the man became older, he became famous for his prominent mili-tary victories. Is it possible that the history of his birth had determined his battling fate further on? As Jan III Sobieski was coming to this world as a newborn, a thunderstorm was raging and another horde of invaders attacked the castle. Still, the legend would not survive if one very important episode were forgotten; when the obstetrician lady came into the room and put the newborn on a table of black marble, an extremely hard thunder blast hit the surroundings. obstetrician lady became deaf. The castle’s tenants have no doubt; that was a prophecy from up above.

The 17th century left many scars on the old stronghold while Konstantin, one of Mr. Sobieski’s descendants, sold the castle and the neighboring town to the rich family of Zewuskis. Though the young descendants of the old Zewuski indeed devastated the castle and the surroundings without any wars and battles so that even their great wealth did not help. The luxurious balls and roaring carouses followed one after an-other, but it eventually came to an end as their great debts forced the Zewuski family to sell all of their mansions and assets.

The numerous fires and an earthquake in 1838 showed no mercy to the walls and halls of the castle, but the impressive forti-fication at the wide hilltop still made it into the 20th century.

The fateful hour came to the castle in the 1970s – the articles of fine arts started returning to the castle’s ancient rooms and halls.

nowadays, a number of exhibits owned by the Lvov Arts Gallery are on display at the Olessko castle. Particularly, there are pieces of tapestry and paintings capable of challenging those of the Louvre. One can also see the unique wooden sculptures brought back to life by the enthusiastic amateurs headed by Mr. Boris voznitski, the general manager of the Lvov Arts Gal-lery. was present took place. The first 1,200 bottles of

red port-wine called Livadia, made of the grape

harvested in 1891, were laid down for storage at

the said facility. This kind of wine is favored by the

Russian Czar Nicholas II.

London, 2007. A bottle of such Livadia port-wine

sealed by the Russian Emperor was sold for as much

as US$9,000 at the Sotheby’s.42

LIVADIA, RED PORT-WINEThis kind of wine, once favored by the family of the Russian Emperor, is made of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape since 1891. The grape used to produce this wine is grown at the Crimean South Coast only. The drink is colored garnet red and charms people by its vivid glitter. The wine’s flavor resembles the tender aroma of a cherry kernel and a clear morocco tone, as winemakers would say. ‘Morocco’ was an expensive sort of leather people used very long time ago. The wine tastes rich and resembles some tender touch of autumnal decline.

THE HISTORY OF THE FAMOUS MAS-SAnDRA WInERY and its collection of rare sorts of wine dates back to the time when Prince Lev Galitsin was appointed to the post of the Chief Winemaker at the Regional Ad-ministration Authority for the Crimea and the Caucasus. Mr. Galitsin decided to build the Russia’s first winery of the tunnel type to pro-duce and ripen jug and dessert wines. Down there on the Crimean soil, Mr. Galitsin cre-ated the best wine cеllars in the world; seven tunnels, each being 150 meters long, flare to different directions from the trunk gallery and the stable temperature of +10…12C, which is ideal for wine ripening, is maintained down there during the entire year.

The wine collection established by Lev Gal-itsin many years ago nowadays comprises around one million of bottles of really unique drinks aged ten to two hundred years. In particular, there are Jerez de la Frontera, 1775; Madeira Ribero Secchi, 1837; La Crima Christi, 1847; Muscat Lunelle, 1848; and Saperavi Theodosia, 1883. The wines like these are extreme rar-ity worldwide. There are also products of France, Spain, Germany, and Portugal, still the core of the collection is made up of the wines produced at Massandra.

Чтобы получать очень высокие кондиции сахара в винограде, а затем в вине, использовали максимально благоприятные температурные условия, но существовал и особый метод – увяливание ягод на кустах: подкручивали ножку грозди винограда, благодаря чему влага переставала поступать в ягоду и разжижать накопленный сахар.

MASSANDRA WHITE MUSCAT, 193177 years of ageapproximate price: euro 300This wine is colored tender gold and has the nice taste with tar and softwood flavor enriched with the touch of blooming roses, honey, and dry-cured muscat berries. The wine’s taste is rich, harmonious, spicy, gentle, and dessert-and-caramel with the tones of soft vanilla and savory bitterness of coffee grains. The alcohol content is 12.7% and the sugar content is 24.1%.Historical background: This sort of noble white liquor is produced by Massandra Winery since 1892 using the white muscat grape. In order to get rather high content of sugar in this sort of grape and eventually in the wine made of it, the most favorable temperature conditions were applied along with the special method of dry-curing the grape as it was still growing; they would squeeze a bunch of grape at its stem so that water stopped penetrating the grape berries and ceased to dissolve the sugar accumulated there.

The wine tastes rich, oily, and elegant, and also has a nice combination of soft and mild flavors of rose, citron, Muscat, and coffee as long-lasting aftertaste. The alcohol content is 15.3% and the sugar content is 27.8%.Historical background: This nice liqueur wine was produced until 1939 under the aegis of the District Administration of Livadia, Crimea. It was produced under a special classical technology providing for manual repulping of grape using oaken graters as well as for infusion of grape juice on the seeds and skins and wine alcoholization.

The treasures of Massandra Winery were rescued twice during its entire lifetime. The first time was during the Civil War as the wine cеllars were sealed off to avoid looting; the staircase leading to the lower levels of the wine cеllars was blocked by large stones and fastened by cement. The second rescue operation was carried out to evacuate the wine collection from the nazi Germans during the World War II, so it was relocated to several secret hideouts in the town of Yalta.

At the present time, twenty-eight sorts of vintage wine are produced by Massandra Winery and twenty-four of them have been awarded at various international contests, with two grand-prix cups as well as the total of 148 golden, silver, and bronze med-als. People can taste these wines at one of Massandra’s several wine tasting locations while the famous collection can be seen at its museum. Some rare wines of the Massandra collection are sold from time to time, so the wine admirers and experts can purchase these genuine winery masterpieces that help people preserve the nice memory of their travels around the Crimean shores coupled with sweet smells of summer and the vast areas of this magic peninsula. 0

Во время гражданской войны коллекцион-ное отделение замуровали, чтобы оно не подверглось разгра-блению: лестничную клетку, ведущую в нижние этажи под-вала, заложили огромными камнями и скрепили цементным раствором. А во время Великой Отечественной войны кол-лекцию вин эвакуировали и спрятали в засекреченных местах в Ялте, чтобы спасти от фашистов.

Сейчас на заводе выпускается 28 марочных вин, двадцати че-тырем из них на международных конкурсах было присужде-но два кубка Гран-при, 148 золотых, серебряных и бронзовых медалей. Вина можно попробовать в одном из нескольких де-густационных залов «Массандры», а коллекцию – увидеть в музейном фонде. Время от времени редкие вина из коллекци-онных запасов продаются, и тогда ценители могут приобрести для себя настоящие шедевры. The New World’s Language

consider the esthetics of constructivism as the way to master

some new reality of the world. The excitement with new

technical capabilities, chances to design space, ultimate

convenience and functionality of premises, turndown of the

typical architectural decorations, and design of huge complex

facilities suitable for multiple uses were the architectural

features the constructivism has introduced to become a true

language of the new world.

The black and white paintings at the walls further emphasize the individuality of each room in the hotel. The bathrooms have been designed in a way that nothing odd can be found there and the monoto-nous stoneware tiles at the floor and on the walls further strengthen this style. At the lobby, one can see a pink mosaic carpet in white frames; it smoothly goes upward and returns to our sight, reflected in the mirrors on the ceiling. The play of colors, undertones and shadows, and the variety of broken lines, and the upward directions of the interior altogether pro-duce a harmonic space full of energy.

The interiors of Cosmopolit Hotel have been made up of the things that have their own characters and do not be-long to any particular style. It is because a true cosmopolitan is a person who re-spects all cultures, with no preference to any specific one. SPAnISH WInES ARE vERY GOOD, InDEED. This is particularly why one of the sessions of the wine club at Aristocrat restaurant was dedicated to getting familiar with the Spanish wines. The charm-ing guitar melodies were accompanying the restaurant visitors as they were enjoying the five splendid tastes; the rose sparkling wine Pinot noir Brut from Catalonia with a touch of rye bread, strawberry, and cream; the red Gran Reserva 2000 and the white Blanco Fermentado en Barrica 2005 from the province of Rioja Alta; the dark cherry wine Reserva 2000 from the area of Ribera-del-Duero; and, finally, the aureate and yellow natural sweet Grand Feudo Moscatel 2006 with flowery and honey flavors.

The homelike atmosphere was there at the Aristocrat that evening. The wine fans were offered some surprises; a small exhibition of paintings and a number of prizewinning contests. Chatting over a glass of wine, nice environment, interest-ing collocutors, and, of course, the best wine have altogether have made that ‘Spanish’ evening a really beautiful venue to enjoy. 0

И даже не просто соединение всего вышеперечисленного в формате клуба с барной стойкой, где можно не только растянуться, но

и оттянуться после напряженного дня. Если бы идея «Фор-мулы» заключалась только в таком видении предоставления оздоровительных услуг, вряд ли клуб обрел бы широкую известность и стал тем, чем он есть сейчас: wellness-клубом премиум-класса.

Концепция «Формулы» включала в себя не построение по-мещений и площадей с тренажерами, SPA-оборудованием, бассейном, фитнес-баром и многочисленным персоналом, а создание пространства внутренней свободы и гармонии, любви к себе и миру, в котором посчастливилось родиться, уважения к своему телу и его потребностям. Пространства отрешения от суеты, от внутреннего напряжения и зажато-сти, избавления от болезненных ощущений и чувства недо-вольства собой.

Поэтому в «Формуле» нет ничего лишнего или случайно-го – ничего, что не служило бы основной идее. FOR THIS REASOn, THE DEvELOPERS OF THE FORMULA CLUB COnCEPT had to organize a broad interviewing campaign in order to educate and brief the general public, their future cli-entele including, on the new ways of understanding the physical and spiritual fitness and the ways these two can be combined. The club founders had to explain to people that the Formula is not just a swimming pool of some specific size and volume where swim-mers merely swim this or that long; not just a set of body build-ing equipment where people can build up their physiques on their own or under supervision of a personal couch; not just a standard spa lounge even though it offers the services of supreme quality; and even not just a simple combination of all the abovementioned

in the form of a club with a bar counter where one can spend his or her leisure time and also get some good rest after the workday end. Had the idea of the Formula been centered only on that view of providing recreational services, the place could hardly become such a great success it is nowadays; a premium class wellness club.

The Formula’s basic concept does not envisage the creation of premises and areas housing body building equipment, swimming pool, fitness bar, and numerous personnel. The idea is to create the place for internal freedom and harmony, for love to oneself and to the surrounding world where we were lucky to be born, and for respect to our bodies and their needs. It is the place where people could forget their daily fuss, their internal tensions and constraints and to get rid of their soreness and personal discontent.

For this particular reason, there is nothing redundant or occa-sional in the Formula, for such things would not serve the ultimate idea of the club. Even the club’s interior has been designed to suit not the short-lived fashion of today, but to create a specific mood that would correspond to the specific tasks; there is enough space, light, and air in the club, and the techno minimalism style proves it in the body building rooms and the grandeur of the Ancient Rome further supports this idea in the huge swimming pool area. Perhaps, your talking partner is much older or much younger than you; one of you maybe stodgier and the other maybe withier by the nature. Each of you prefers different types of baths; happily, there are many types of them at the Formula, so anyone can pick what he or she likes best. nevertheless, you both share the same view of life and the same attitude to yourself; you run many miles at the treadmill, you get relaxed under the dexterous hands of you masseur, and you can afford a small talk over a cup of fitness cock-tail whereby you would discuss the topics like a movie you have watched or an interesting book you have read recently, and not the things like trade balances, cargo deliveries, and sales figures.

This all creates the unique, true spirit of how people get along and communicate to each other at the club. This is strongly differ-ent from those numerous caramel and acid induced hangouts one can find quite often. Here at the Formula, you just get into harmo-ny, not into a crowd, and you also preserve your own agenda and feel your own importance. This is exactly why the first promotional campaign of the club had the slogan saying "Formulate Yourself!"

As far as the club events are concerned, there is a good tradition at the Formula to organize theme night parties at summertime, to hold the new Year parties, and to arrange concerts of famous scene performers for the Formula members. Such venues would make your life more vivid and versatile and would also assist in the formation of the team spirit; feeling like an equal one among the best of the kind.

YOU JUST CAn'T GET TO KnOW THIS COUnTRY by merely having lain on a beach in one of its coastal hideaways. It is only in vietnam that you can find the Aroma River, the gulf of thousand islands, the Japanese Bridge and ancient pagodas, the young pio-neer organization and the Kao-Dao sect where the sect members worship the spirits of Jeanne d'Arc, victor Hugo, and Leo Tolstoy. It is better to spare enough time for yourself and undertake a jour-ney down the ancient road of mandarins stretching from the north to the south of the country from Hanoi to Saigon.

So, welcome to Hanoi now. Time has violently destroyed many things that were created during centuries. There is almost noth-ing left of the old ‘bamboo’ city nowadays, still it has preserved its traditions. The Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, the one-pillar pagoda, the military museum, the presidential palace, the old city quar-ter consisting of 36 handicraftsmen streets, the numerous temples

and lakes, and evening street markets; these are the things Hanoi is famous for first of all. Here you can also

It is impossible to describe Saigon in just a couple of lines, so this is going to be quite another story… 0

Самым любопытным путешественникам Халонг открывает свои пещеры, скрытые за толщей каменных стен нескольких островов. Истинное наслаждение дайверам и купальщикам доставляет прозрачная и чистая вода залива.

Покинув Ханой, можно отправиться дальше, в Хюэ, послед-нюю столицу империи, средоточие императорских дворцов, пагод, гробниц и храмов. Дальше путь лежит вдоль моря через перевал Хайвань, практически всегда окутанный облаками, в Дананг с его бесконечными пляжами и Мишон – центр чамской цивилизации, где среди джунглей сохранились развалины ин-дуистских храмов государства Чампа. Неподалеку на равнине возвышаются мраморные скалы. Пять гор, целиком состоящие из мрамора, расположены на Китайском пляже, каждая из них названа именем природного элемента: дерева, огня, металла,

земли и воды. Дальше по пути Хойян, словно застывший в XIX веке. Рынок и старые деревянные домики ничуть не изменились с того времени благодаря тому, что войны, опустошившие Вьет-нам, не затронули этот город.

Великий путь мандаринов зовет дальше в Нячанг – столицу пляжного отдыха.

It would suffice to recall the “Indochina”, a French movie master-piece, and then you will visualize the labyrinth of fanciful islets scattered around the water surface of 1,500 square kilometers and the bright red sails of boats that resemble the wings of a dragon somehow. There are cozy bays with fine sand beaches and unap-proachable sharp rocks with stone needles running swiftly into the water depth. The most curious travelers may succeed in discov-ering the Halong Bay caves hidden out behind the thick rocks of some of its islets. Finally, the place is a perfect bliss for divers and swimmers due to the transparent and clear water.

After leaving Hanoi area, you can go further heading for Huet, the last imperial capital and the conglomerate of impe-rial palaces, pagodas, crypts, and temples. Further away, your route is running along the coast and across the mountain pass of Haivan, which is almost always wrapped in clouds, towards Danang with its endless beaches and Mishon, the center of the Champa civilization, where the ruined Hinduism temples can be seen in the jungle. Just close to the place, some marble rocks stand up. These are five mounts consisting of pure marble and situated at the Chinese Beach, with each of the mounts having been named after the specific natural elements; Wood, Fire, Metal, Earth, and Water. Further on your way you see Hoyan, a town that seems to be preserved in its 19th century outlook as its marketplace and old wooden huts have not changed over the decades because the numerous wars that raged the country had luckily gone aside this place.
