Welcome on this beautiful autumn day; as we see the earth come alive with amazing beauty, may we, too, be touched

by God’s hand.

Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled as to console;

To be understood as to understand;

To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

The PasTor’s Desk

It was a great week at St. Mary’s and I’m looking forward to another one to come. Thanks for all you do for us and have a great week yourself!

I was driving on the highway the other day and I saw a car with a bumper sticker that said “I’m Catholic and I vote.” On the other side of the bumper was a sticker for Mitt Romney. As I passed the car (I drive fast!), I thought to myself that the bumper sticker endorsing a candidate could have just easily been for Barack Obama. Announcing yourself as a Catholic and a voter is a very good thing but it does not lead to an automatic or easy decision about which candidate to endorse. Both Romney and Obama have policies that support Catholic moral and social teaching and they both have policies that fall very short in the areas of Catholic moral and social teaching. There is no easy or automatic choice for today’s Catholic voter. So what is a Catholic voter to do? The answer is this, get informed, form your conscience and vote.

According to The Catechism of the Catholic Church, there are three important things you should do to form your Catholic con-science (#1788). First, you must exercise prudence. Prudence is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achiev-ing it (Catechism #1806). Secondly, you must seek the advice of competent people to learn about the issues that are important to Catholics. These issues include, but are not limited to, human life issues, immigration, religious freedom, poverty and war, terror and violence. A good way to begin to find this information is to read the United States Catholic Bishops’ letter called Faithful Citizen-ship. Faithful citizenship refers to the responsibility we all have to form our consciences, and to use those informed consciences in making all our decisions, including voting decisions. You can read the entire document at www.faithfulcitizenship,org or www.usccb.org. Finally, you must pray. Pray for guidance from the Holy Spir-it; pray for an open heart and an open mind so that you can hear how the Holy Spirit is guiding you and so that you can hear what the church teaches.

Of course, you must vote. It is the right and the responsibility of all Americans to weigh all the important issues and vote. Take your conscience into the voting booth with you and remember that no single issue should dictate your vote, but a prayerfully and thoughtfully formed conscience that includes all or many of the issues should be on your mind as you cast your vote.

Tomorrow, Monday, October 1, Fr. Dan Riley, OFM from St. Bonaventure University and the Mt. Ireneaus Franciscan Retreat Center will be here to lead a twilight retreat entitled What does it mean when we say we are Franciscan? This great night is open to everyone in the parish. Please call the parish office or go the web site www.stmarys-pompton.org to register.

Please join the friars as we celebrate the Transitus on Wednesday, October 3, at 7:00 PM in church. This is a beautiful celebration of prayer, song and readings celebrating the passing of St. Francis

from earthly life to eternal life. We will celebrate the actual feast day on Thursday, October 4, with our school children at an 8:30 AM mass in the school—all are welcome! In honor of the Feast of St. Francis the parish offices will be closed on Friday, October 5.Of course, there cannot be a celebration of the Feast of St. Francis without a Blessing of the Animals! Please bring your pets—large and small, regular and exotic to the parking lot on Sunday, October 7, at 1:30 PM for their annual blessing!

As we friars celebrate the Feast of Our Holy Father St. Francis, we are grateful to you and for you. At the same time, we hope that in some small way our Franciscan life and witness shows you how good and graced you are and how privileged you are to be a dwelling place of the Most High God!

Pace e Bene,

Dear Friends, May the Lord give you peace!

Your generous daily and weekly contributions of food, supermar-ket gift cards and checks are greatly appreciated; thank you all - you are truly a blessing to this ministry!

Food for Thought—Recently one of our parishioners passed away. His family asked family and friends to donate to St. Mary’s Food Pantry in his memory, in lieu of flowers. This was an im-mense blessing for the food pantry; we are eternally grateful to his family’s generous spirit. As it was, we were very low on food at the time, so these donations were a double, if not a triple blessing for the Food Pantry. So, if you would like to honor the memory of a loved one, and wish to help the poor in our area; just tell the funeral director that you would like any monetary donations sent to St. Mary’s Food Pantry. We sincerely appreciate the checks and supermarket gift cards we receive in memory of someone you loved.

October 14—Canned meats (like chicken, turkey and Spam). November 11—Paper products (i.e. toilet paper) and laundry detergent.

Prayer Shawls Available—Anyone interested in a prayer shawl for a special need [to celebrate special, joyous occasions, to console those in need, to give hope or to com-fort], please contact the Parish Office at 973.835.0374.

Stamp Out Despair Collection—St. Mary’s People of Peace ministry, following the Franciscan tradition of com-passion for the vulnerable among us, is asking again this year for donations to provide stamps and stationery for immigrant detainees. First Friends, as a service charity, needs donations of money or “Forever Stamps” to fill packages for 1,200 immigrants being held in local facilities.

These detainees, held for indeterminate periods, are confined to dorms with little ability to communicate with loved ones. The Stamp Out Despair campaign provides that ability and demonstrates that commu-nities care for them. Cash contributions are also used to purchase commissary telephone cards for destitute detainees and asylum seekers.

People of Peace will be outside the church October 13 and 14, collecting contributions for Stamp Out Despair. You may also drop your contribution off at the Parish Office from October 15 through 19. Thank you for your generosity.

Did you know?

Saturday, September 29, is the feast day for the arch- angels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Angels – messengers

from God – appear frequently in Scripture but only these three are named. Each of these angels performs a different mission in Scripture: Michael protects; Gabriel announces; Raphael guides. The 1970 revision of the Roman calendar joined the feasts of the three archangels to Michael’s feast day of September 29.
