Who assigns API numbers for new wells?

    Regulatory agencies Information providers

    Operators

Each organization uses different information to assign API numbers.

Each organization uses different numbering approaches.

Result: You cannot connect data using API numbers and expect

information from different sources to all tie together correctly.

    Who assigns API numbers?

Regulatory agencies Most states assign only 10 digits of API number to Well Origin A few states assign 11-12th digits for wellbore identification 2 states assign 13-14th digits for well events Numerous states use 11-14th digits in conflict w/ D12A standard

Result: If you mix API numbers from state agencies with API numbersfrom other sources you are almost certain to have a significant numberof incorrectly integrated data

U.S. Regulatory Agencies Use Different Approaches toTracking Wellbores

    No API assignment for sidetrack

    Who assigns API numbers?

Information providers Assign 10-digit API number for states without API numbers Often assign 11-12th digit for wellbores

Some increment only for wellbores to geologic target Some increment for any wellbore, whether to target or not

    Some providers assign 13-14th

    digit for well events Deepenings

    Recompletions

    Re-entry to plugged well

Different providers have different rules for when API numbers

should be changed API changes are a major source of industry frustration

    Who assigns API numbers?

Operators Some operators assign 11-12th digits for wellbores that are not

captured by regulator or information provider

Example: different approaches for Pilot Holes

Examples of Information Used for AssigningAPI number

    Regulators work from permit information

Vendors use different sources Sources of information vary by state, by confidentialityperiod, by operator reporting practices, by state releasepractice

    Regulatory forms: permits, drilling, completion

Supporting documents w/ forms: wellbore diagrams

    Well measurements: logs, directional surveys

Operators use well logs, directional surveys, internal sources to identify wellbores

Example of Pilot Hole in TX 42-123-32202

    Eagleford Shale horizontal well

Nothing on Permit about pilot hole Possibly pilot hole in supporting docs for permit?

    Nothing on filed directional survey

G-1 Test Report mentions sidetrack at xxxx Well logs may indicate pilot hole

    Well logs for each wellbore?

Log indicates near-vertical section at depths where Operator

filings with RRC indicate well is horizontal?

Wellbore diagrams can tell the story

Why not work with regulators so this type ofdiagram is filed in all states?
