Principal’s Report

Term 3 concluded with the farewell of our Year 12 students. The farewell formal assembly and dinner were a fitting celebration acknowledging this significant milestone in these young people's lives. Parents should be justifiably proud of their sons and daughters,

particularly with regard to the way they presented themselves on these formal occasions. In addition, I believe our HSC students have been well-prepared and supported by a dedicated group of teachers. I'm sure students appreciated the additional tutorials provided for them, by their teachers, during the school holidays and the STUVAC period prior to their examinations. On behalf of the staff, I hope our students achieve the outcomes they deserve and we wish them success in their future endeavours. Our Prefect Co-ordinator, Mr Danual Stewart completed the democratic, yet challenging task, of arriving at our new Captains and Prefects. Our school is very fortunate to have a depth of quality student leaders who put themselves forward to participate in this process. Congratulations to our Captains Anna Nash and Augustus Elton supported by Vice Captains Hayley Walton and Mitchell Fosdick. Our Elected Prefects are Lily Abbott, Olivia Colantonio, Sally Deshon, Lily Dumble, Tori Dundas, Georgina Elton, Lane Hawkins, Aimee Sanders, Allynta Sutherland, Nicholas Young. Staff have continued to provide our students with enrichment activities. Year 8 recently attended a 2-day Zoo Snooz at Dubbo which supported their school humanities curriculum. The focus of this hands-on activity provided additional knowledge and skills in content areas of environmental sustainability, conservation of resources and preservation of endangered species. Thank you to supervising staff, Mr Mark Heaney, Dr Michael Armstrong, Mr Robert Holden and our school Chaplain Maz O'Callaghan. Year 10 students have participated in a Study Skills Workshop. These activities addressed the explicit teaching of comprehension and note taking, which will further prepare them for their senior schooling. Thank you to Year 10 Adviser, Mrs Gail Kenny for organising this day and presenting and to fellow presenters, Mrs Debbie Redden, Mrs Kylie Deshon and Dr Michael Armstrong. Mrs Debbie Redden has implemented strategies and programs to support the smooth integration of Year 6 students into Coonabarabran High school. Year 6 students have been provided with ‘taster’ lesson in both Science and Mathematics. As a follow on from our successful Feast of Words, author Mr Paul Stafford will conduct writing workshops with Year 6 boys on Friday, 13 November whilst the girls will participate in some English taster lessons. In addition our feeder schools will have visits from both staff and students, along with a Year 6 Orientation day, to be held here on 4/12/15. Mr Moffat,

Year 7 Advisor 2016, also invites Year 6 students and parents to an Information Evening which will be held in our Library on Tuesday 10/11/15, commencing at 6.00pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to gain insight into the breadth of opportunities offered at Coonabarabran High School and I urge all parents and carers of prospective Year 7 2016 students to attend. Our annual community P&C International Feast event is fast approaching. The success of this evening has been acknowledged comprehensively by the positive feedback from participants from the previous two years. I look forward to working with the school community to ensure its continued success, and I encourage your participation on this very enjoyable evening on Friday 20/11/15 commencing at 6.00pm. Finally, I invite all parents and carers to attend the next meeting of the P&C, in our Library on Monday, 26/10/15 at 5.30pm. This will be an important meeting to finalise plans for the International Feast and all are welcome. Graham Enks

P&C President’s Report

The HSC is in full swing and our thoughts and best wishes are with students and parents while they undertake the final act. Good luck to all.

The International Feast will be held on Friday 20 November at the school. There will be at least 8 food stalls; Mexican, South African, Greek, Thai, Chinese, Italian, Bangladeshi and an International salad bar. This will be the third Feast and promises to be a great night. As with the previous two events, all funds raised go back to the school.

The next P&C meeting is scheduled for 5.30pm Monday 26 October in the school library. A special meeting to finalise matters concerning the International Feast will be held immediately prior at 4.30pm. If you would like to contribute to the Feast or any other matters relating to the P&C and the High School, please attend either or both of these meetings.

My book of the month is Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. Admittedly, it’s the only book I have read this month and has a terrible title, but as one of the promotional quotes reads “if you only ever read one western novel, make it this one.” A rollicking, relaxing read and it’s available from the school library.

Cheers, Mark.

The ORION School Magazine, created and edited by Year 9/10

Media Publishing students, is at the printers and will be available from

Ms Ryan in the school office for $10 in mid-term. Stay tuned to the school's

website, advertisements in the Coonabarabran Times and look for

posters around the school advertising the date it will go on sale.

Coonabarabran High School P & C Association Meeting Minutes Monday 24th August 2015

Meeting Opened: 5.35pm. Meeting temporarily adjourned so that those present could look at a selection of HSC major works. Mr Stewart and Mrs Doyle provided an excellent overview of these impressive major works. Meeting resumed at 6.15pm. Attendance: Anita Tighe, Tammy Samuel, Kellie Nash, Angela Karagiannis, Graham Enks, Nick Karagiannis, Tracee McHugh, Mary Doolan, Geoff Gasior, Dan Stewart, Bethany Doyle and Col Mercer. Apologies: Mark Fosdick, Mandy Sulter, Phillip van Schalkwyk, Ansie van Schalkwyk and Leesa Kelly. Motion: Apologies be accepted. Moved Anita Tighe, seconded Tracee McHugh. Business arising from Previous Minutes

Mary Doolan confirmed the school had sent out letters to

business houses advising of the additional option of school shorts for the girls’ summer uniform. Copies were provided to the P&C Secretary.

Graham Enks raised the issue of safety concerns that arose

at the recent North West sport event. The fact that no prequalifying times were required posed problems and prequalifying times may need to be reinstated for the next event.

Members at the meeting were advised that it is the role of the

Canteen Manager to look after the Canteen financial books and act as Treasurer in some schools in a paid capacity. In other schools such as ours the Canteen Treasurer’s role is a voluntary one. A role statement is now available for this position.

Moved that the Minutes be accepted as a true and correct record of the meeting. Previous Minutes approved – Moved Angela Karagiannis, seconded Anita Tighe. Correspondence in 1. Federation of Parents and Citizens Associations of NSW –

invitation to be involved in the ABC Open Drum project to provide our views.

2. Federation of Parents and Citizens Associations of NSW invitation to help lobby the Federal Government to include the Gonski approach in the school system. Dated 5th August 2015.

3. ACNC request for P&C information. Letter dated 10th August 2015.

4. Unisite brochure. 5. Healthy Kids Association letter regarding their insurance

system. 6. Copies of letters from Coonabarabran High School to Mrs Jo

Cole, Mr & Mrs Karagiannis, Mrs Grace Law, a courtesy copy to the Secretary of the P&C and a copy of a general letter to Parents and Caregivers advising them of the new school girl shorts option.

Correspondence Out: No outgoing correspondence. Correspondence accepted: Nick Karagiannis moved that correspondence be approved and Tracee McHugh seconded the motion. Canteen Report – The Canteen still needs a Treasurer to undertake Canteen duties as the current Treasurer is not able to continue. Forsyths advised that they would charge $300 per quarter to organise payments but will not perform a Treasurer’s role. They recommended that someone else does the book keeper work with a voluntary overseer. Many payments need to be paid online. The canteen incurred a loss of $5,700.00 due to an excessive number of bills all paid at the one time. Previously there were more positive returns. The Canteen has currently earned a profit of approximately $6,000.00 to date this year. Possible helpers for Canteen Treasurer’s role were suggested as Linda Greenwood or Cindy Smith. Angela Karagiannis will contact the P&C Federation to find out what procedures are required for this Treasurer’s role. There was a motion raised during the meeting by P&C members that the canteen considers changing the Treasurer’s role from being a voluntary to a paid position. This motion was moved by Tammy Samuel and seconded by Nick Karagiannis. It was suggested that the role of Canteen Treasurer may require a commitment of approximately 3 or 4 hours per week.

Treasurer’s Report - Angela Karagiannis provided the Treasurer’s Report. A paper copy of her report was tabled at the meeting. Insurance for the P&C was paid last month as were Pony Club expenses and Julie McGlashan’s salary for the duties during the Horse Expo. The current account balance is approximately $12,300.00. A special event is being held by the Orana on Monday 7th September at 6pm to provide the P&C among other recipients with a cheque as part of their community support program. We have applied for a grant to assist us with the cost of the Feast Night, hopefully we will be successful in receiving this grant. Acceptance of the Treasurer’s Report was moved by Angela Karagiannis and seconded by Anita Tighe. Environment and Grounds Committee report – Graham Enks is finalising a project of providing access from the school grounds to the COLA (basketball court area) and Agricultural plot. It is hoped that this will include wheelchair access and that the school will be able to fund it. It is planned that the potholes in the staff carpark will be filled up. The school is looking into the issues of special netting being provided in the COLA to reduce the problem of birds’ droppings as they are considered a health issue. It is planned to use some of the funds earned by the school from the North West Horse Expo for this purpose. Relieving Principal’s Report – Graham Enks advised that the year 6 Parent Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 17th November. In looking at the NAPLAN results that have just come out, our school was above average for years 7 and 9 for ‘like’ schools but was below State average. There were improvements in student results for years 7 to 9 and improvement in Indigenous student growth was good. Those students that have been involved in the Quick Smart and Multi Lit programs showed outstanding improvement in their results. This showed that these students benefited hugely from these programs. If you would like further information on NAPLAN results please speak with Graham Enks. Deputy Principal’s Report – Mary Doolan advised that NAPLAN results do show where gaps are. The school will be addressing these gaps through a range of projects including the new Super 6 Comprehension Strategy. It has only just started this year. More teachers will also be more actively trained in this project. Wednesday will be NAIDOC Day. Gail Kenny and Alison Stanton will be providing a lunchtime event. The Sleep rough event last Friday was a great night. The year 10/11 subject selection evening had a very good turnout. The students attending TAFE were very well behaved. Nancy Doolan was very helpful. Year 11 students will have their exams next week. Teachers are providing information on exam content. Year 12 students are now focusing on their HSC preparation. There will be holiday tutorial time available for them. Mr Draper is organising it. Michael Armstrong took some students down to Sydney to Parliament House. The year 10 Coffs Harbour excursion went well. The year 12 formal will be held this Thursday. On Tuesday 15th September the Prefect Induction ceremony will be held at 10am. On 17th September the year 12 farewell will be held at 9am. Nancy Doolan has been a great support for year 12 students. General Business:

The International Feast Night has been confirmed as starting

from 6pm Friday 20th November. A motion was put forward that P&C provide the Raffle subcommittee with $200.00 to be used towards raffle costs. Moved by Tammy Samuel and seconded by Angela Karagiannis. Angela is to organise the payment.

P&C members were invited to come along to the special dinner

provided by the Coonabarabran Aero Club on Saturday 26th September.

The issue of a choice of Horse Expo Hut Manager was carried

over to next meeting. Date of Next Meeting: Monday 26th October 2015. (5.30pm High School Library all welcome). Meeting Closed: 7.30pm. Administration Reminder - Could you please use the P&C’s email address for all secretarial matters, for any messages, apologies or suggested speakers or if you would like to help at the International Feast Night or attend meetings and need more information. It is: [email protected] Thank you.

YOUR TIME STARTS NOW…Tina Pech

My earliest memory is…. climbing

trees.

My first relationship was…. sweet and

short lived.

My most treasured possession is… knowledge.

My mother and father always told me…. yes but you’re

different.

I wish I had….. more time to do everything.

I wish I hadn’t…. stayed up so late reading.

My guiltiest pleasure is… not feeling guilty.

My happiest moment is… the present.

At home I cook…. cakes for the neighbours.

My favourite gadget is… none.

I’m not so good at…… maths.

When I was a child I wanted to…. be an archaeologist.

The book that changed my life is……books are

constantly changing my life!

If I could live anywhere… I would need more than one

of me.

It’s not fashionable but I love…. trashy movies.

My worst trait is…. talking too much or not enough.

My best trait is…. creativity.

Friends say I am… calm.

I’d love to…. make costumes for films.

If I could change one thing in the world it would

be….. hatred.

My greatest fear is….. feeling stuck, settling for

something.

If only I could…. declutter.

The last big belly laugh I had was…. a couple of days

ago.

I relax by….. Reading.

What I don’t find amusing is…. ignorance.

I’m always being asked…. say something in French.

My favourite place in the world… too many.

At the moment I’m listening to…. City Calm Down,

SOAK, Echo and the Bunnymen.

My favourite work of art is…. too many.

My worst job was….. for a dodgy photographer.

The strangest place I've ever slept… in a bathtub.

Successful Pig Showing at Quirindi Show A small but dedicated team of students represented the Coonbarabran High School Berkshire Stud at Quirindi Show last term.

The students were Grace Gorden, Artemis Pech, Hayley Bartlett-Birrell and Jacob Bandman. These students were out numbered by the 6 Berkshire gilts which all had to be washed and groomed early on Friday morning in preparation for the judging. As novices to pig showing this was no small feat for the students or the pigs.

The next activity for these novices was Junior Judging, competing against older students from Quirindi High, Grace did well to achieve a 6th place. Next was the parading competition in which Artemis placed 3rd overall.

Finally onto the pig classes where the judge deliberated for quite a while, but ended with CHS Sapphire shown by Artemis was placed as Champion Junior Female as well as Reserve Champion Female of the show, being narrowly beaten by a Senior Landrace sow in pig. This is a fine achievement for a gilt of only just 6 months old! The judge commented on the high standard and recommended we consider showing at the Sydney Royal. You never know your luck in the big city!! Year 9 Student Forum

Throughout the year students from Year 9 have participated in community forums investigating environmental matters and the nature of local and state government. Recently Dr Michael Armstrong took a team of six students to represent the school to the NSW State Parliament where they presented and debated issues relating to local environments and their development. The team of six; Ian Whittall, Jarrod Lambert, Tristan Thomas, Grace Colantonio, Olivia Tilborghs, and Annabelle Park were commended as being the best prepared and the most competent speakers in this statewide forum.

Clockwise from left: Grace Gordon in Junior Judging: The Pig Showing Team: Hayley, Artemis, Grace and Jacob; Olivia representing Coona High at the NSW State Parliament Student Forum; The Student Forum Team: Ian, Tristan, Jarrod, Grace, Olivia and Annabelle.

SLEEP ROUGH On a rather Friday balmy night, Coonabarabran High School held its fourth “Sleep Rough” in support of Fr Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets, raising over $400 for this charity.

While sleeping in the Hall is not as precarious as most homeless people, it does raise awareness of the difficulties in the lives of young Australians of a similar age. It also gives students the opportunity to have fun with their friends, to build friendships across school years, recognise their own lives are relatively privileged and to donate money to improve the lives of others.

Thank you to the parents who made the soup for us, Mr Graham and Ms Doolan for staying with us, and Mr Enks for breakfast. Thank you most especially to all the students who participated in Sleep Rough this year.

Youth Off The Streets story Since opening in 1991, Youth

Off The Streets has grown from a single food van delivering meals to young homeless people on the streets of Kings Cross to a major youth specific agency offering a full continuum of care through delivery of a wide range of services.

The money we raised can help homeless youth in the following ways:

$10.00 can provide a hot meal from the Youth Off The Streets Food Van, which runs 345 nights of the year and is operated solely by volunteers.

$20.00 can provide our Street Walk program with a 'personal kit' of a tooth brush, toothpaste, and deodorant.

$40.00 can provide a bed for the night in a safe and supportive environment

PREFECT BODY 2015/16 The Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects for 2015/16 were officially inducted at a special assembly on 16

September. The Prefect body are: Captains: Annie Nash & Gus Elton Vice Captains: Hayley Walton

60 seconds…. My name is… Daniel Joseph Needham

My nickname is… DJ, Dan

My friends tell me… you are that funny!

My favourite movie is… The Blind Side

My favourite song is… I Choose You by Andy Grammer.

It scares me, but I’d love to… sky dive.

The best advice I’ve been given was… come to Mrs Birrell’s class.

My favourite place other than Coona is… Gwandalan.

My funniest memory is… I have too many.

If I could change one thing in the world, it would be… that everyone was looked at the same.

I have never understood… why people always ask me what is it like being a twin.

I am happiest when… when I’m with Jade.

I would cry if I lost… my grandparents.

The hardest thing I’ve done was… do 60 Seconds.

If I was Prime Minister I would… visit all schools.

If I was reincarnated I would come back as a… my twin brother.

School has been… a great adventure.

When I grow up I want to be a… teacher.

Any words of wisdom?... Never give up on your dreams!

State call up for Kate Coonabarabran High School student Kate Masman has just returned from Thornleigh where she played in the New South Wales Combined High Schools 15 Years Squash Team. Kate was a late call up to the team following the withdrawal of a team member days before the games against Queensland and New Zealand were to commence.

Kate’s call up was the result of the good form she showed whilst representing the North West Regional Team at the CHS Championships earlier in the term. Although not selected in the original five-player squad Kate’s performances had been noted by selectors and when the opportunity arose Kate got an emergency phone call and she jumped at the chance to represent NSW.

A Year 9 student, Kate has been in the North West Open Squash Team since she was in Year 7 and continues the strong tradition of Baradine students who excel in the sport of squash. Kate performed creditably in her state debut and was pleased to be presented with the opportunity to represent at a higher level

After three days of competition the New Zealand team were the

overall winners. Kate will be a better player after this experience

and will be keen to continue to develop her squash game so

that her representative career can continue.

More Gold for Harley Coonabarabran High student Harley Wood has continued his amazing run of success at the NSW Combined High Schools Athletics Carnival. Harley, a Year 11 student, has won numerous medals at this event over the years including three Gold medals at last year’s carnival.

Competing in the 16s age at last week’s carnival Harley contested the Long Jump, High Jump and Triple Jump events. He was disappointed in his long jump performance but more than made up for it in the other two events. In the high jump he finished in third place to secure the Bronze Medal recording a personal best jump of 1.92m

In the Triple Jump Harley started strongly and led the field into the final round. Another competitor then jumped 13.49m which bettered Harley’s mark and relegated him to second position. Harley had the last jump of the competition and nailed an incredible jump of 13.55m to record an amazing win and to secure the Gold Medal.

Other students who performed at the carnival were Gus Elton

(10th in Senior Boys 400m) Jordan Johnston (12th 15 Years

3000m) 16 Years Boy Relay (Peter Evans, Zak Kelly, Cody

Whitty, Harley Wood) and Annabelle Park.

In October, Harley attended the NSW All Schools Carnival,

again held at Homebush. He competed in Triple Jump and High

Jump events, winning Silver medals in both.

Inter-Schools Horse Extravaganza Eight Coonabarabran High equestrian students participated in the recent 4-day ISHE Competition at the AELEC Stadium in Tamworth. All students competed at a high level and achieved excellent results. Many thanks to those who helped facilitate a very enjoyable experience. All students are looking forward to next year's event.
