The police at Ohrigstad are investigating a case of culpable homicide which claimed

the life of a pedestrian. On Friday 2015-05-29 at around 18:30 there was an accident

on the R36 Ohrigstad-Hoedspruit road. When the Police and ambulance arrive at

scene they found the deceased in the middle of the road (bottom photograph). The

driver of the vehicle involved in the accident was not found at the scene but he was

later found at Lydenburg SAPS where he handed himself in. The police are still investi-

gating the cause of this accident and no one was arrested.

The Police says motorists and pedestrians must be vigilant while on the road and toadhere to the rules and regulations. Another two accidents occurred on the R36 road,

one happened on Friday not far from the first accident where a blue BMW was in-

volved (photograph bottom left). On Saturday there was also an accidebt next to the

Ohrigstad-Pilgrims’rest T-junction which involved two vehicles. Meanwhile, traffic in

Burgersfort came to a standstill in the CBD on Saturday when an alleged thief wouldn’t

let go af a cellphone he allegedly grabbed through a car window. When the car moved

he did not let go of the phone. He could not keep pace with the car and fell. He died

shortly afterwards, but the cause was not clear by the time of going to press (photo-

    graph top left)..

    Mr Willem Montgommery accompa-

    nies Modikwa Platinum’s athletes to

    the Comrades Marathon every year,

but Platinum Gazette  also gets him

    accreditation as our special corre-

spondent at the event and all the

    Comrades photographs are taken by

    him. Between demanding athletes

and an even more demanding editor,

he only knows how he does it. To

make sure Willem’s media needs are

    fulfilled, Delaine Cools, Comrades

the other side. Thank you both for

for your contribution to this edition.‘Julle is ysters ’.

Willem is locally known as the

tall one , and literally dwarfs other

people. Very useful when you take

    photographs of athletes as they

easy it is to spot Willem.

The new road through Steelpoort, although scheduled to be completed by the end of

May this year, is not completed, and by the looks of it, it will still be another month or

two before the congestion through the town will be eased. Meanwhile, this stretch is

particualarly narrow whille they construct the other side of the road. Take care!

Samancor, Eastern Chrome Mines in partner-

ship with Media Works recently held a gradu-

ation ceremony in recognition of AET learners

who successfully passed various AET levels.

The AET training is offered by ECM to all full

    time employees, contractors and community

members who are willing and eager to trans-

    form their present educational circumstances

by participating in Adult Education and Training. There were 73 learners who completed differ-

ent levels and they were recognised for their

efforts. This was a highlight for the learners

    Level 4 learners.

    Level 3 learners.

    Level 2 learners.

    Level 1 learners.

and paves the way for them to excel not only

on an educational level, but also in the work

environment. The message to all our employ-

ees is that hard work and determination can

take you to places where you wil l be apply your

    skills and knowledge.

The following is a breakdown of the number

of learners that passed on the different levels:

    Level 1 = 19 learners; Level 2 = 24 learners;Level 3 = 22 learners; Level 4 = 8 learners.

The ECM management team was present

to witness the event and to show its appre-

ciation towards learner’s commitment to the

    programme.

The HR Manager, Mr. Pieter Brits congratulated

and thanked learners for their dedication. He

was impressed about the increase number of

employees participating in AET training. He

actually appealed to the graduates to become

an ambassador for AET and tell their fellow

employees about the benefits of attending. Hecontinued to encourage learners to keep up

with a good work i.e. doing something to better

themselves academically and to complete AET

level 4.He urged employees who do not have

grade 10 to join and participate in AET training

    for their own benefit.

Media Works, the training provider was rep-

resented by Mr. Bheki Masuku, the Sales Ex-

ecutive Manager. Bheki thanked learners and

the company for their commitment to the AET

programme. He also congratulated the facili-

tators for their dedication and passion in AET

training. AET has been a success in this com-

pany for the past three years but all these was

due to a concerted effort directed in achieving

a common goal. Eastern Chrome Mines is the

only site which performs so well as comparedto other Samancor sites. Gladys Dube the

    programme director encouraged learners to

hold on no matter how tough it is since there is

no easy road to success. She also mentioned

that learners should attend classes whenever

they have a chance to do so.

    (Photographs & Information, Mariska Stickling,

    Samancor ECM)

    AET graduation at Samancor ECM

From 25-27 May 2015 the supervisory level

    personnel of Samancor, Eastern Chrome

Mines had the opportunity to meet well-re-

nowned motivational speaker Ian Thomas. The discussion evolved around how employ-

ees can make the business a success…by

    going back to nature.

Ian Thomas is a business graduate who’s

studied lions during his 20 years as a game

ranger in Africa. As one of the world’s top

motivational speakers, he uses that deep

knowledge to transform teams. A dynamic

and inspiring presenter, Ian believes people,

and especially business people, can absorb

and learn from the animal kingdom. Sound

business sense is interlaced with humour and

an ability to tell stories. The audience leave

enthralled and repeat the stories to friends

and colleagues resulting in immense “take

    home business value”

The lesson from lions to business is

     – teams are successful because:Eachindividual member is skillful, powerful and

energetic; many of them have specialist

skills. Total focus is on clear-cut and often

ambitious goals. Communication is vital and

is enhanced by intent listening and watch-

ing other pride members for opportunities.

    Incentives motivate and reward success.

Trust is crucial; pride members are focused,

skillful and cohesive. The structure is flat.

Strict selection ensures that there are no

    passengers. Training is intense, continuous

and fun. Image enhances function. Synergy

     – the pride is more powerful than the sum

of the strengths of the individuals.

The unremitting application of these ten

power points puts the pride in a win-win

situation: the pride and its members thrive.

After the Power of the Pride session, the

audience was divided into teams, for a cakedecorating challenge. The challenge was to

decorate the cake in ways which resembles

    Samancor, Eastern Chrome Mines values.

Teams were vey creative and even the men

showed that they don’t have to stand back

when it comes to the finer art.

James 1:22-25 (NIV)22 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Any-

one who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his

face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what

A big problemMotorists, passengers of private vehiclesand companies are getting more and more

frustrated with the behaviour of certain taxioperators within the Greater Tubatse area.

Groups of taxis are often seen standingnext to the road. The spots vary, but include

areas on the way to Mashishing (Lyden-burg), the Steelpoort road close to the deadtraffic light and even as far as Lion Smelter.

These drivers force private vehicles withpassengers off the road by standing in the

road (sometimes with sjambok and otherweapons). When stopped passengers are

intimidated to make use of taxi services. When they are not willing to do this, it has

happened that motorists are forced to handover all the money they have or face dam-

age to their vehicles. A local constructioncompany was threatened that if they do notmake use of the public transport offered by

the taxi industry to transport their employeesto nearby mines, their company vehicles

will be set alight - with their employeesinside. This company now pays thousands

a month to taxi operators in fear of theiremployees’ lives. Many domestic workers

are hiding flat on vehicle seats when theiremployers take them into town after work

in fear of their lives if they are seen in aprivate vehicle. By law only traffic and lawenforcement officers may stop vehicles in

the way these taxi drivers do.Platinum Gazette  has directed questions

with regards to the regulation of this behav-iour (yes, often traffic officers are not far off

from where this is happening) to authorities- including the Provincial Department of

Roads and Transport, the SAPS, the localtraffic office and municipality. In more than

a month, no response has been receivedfrom any of them. The question was raisedon whether this is allowed to happen be-

cause many officials own and benefit fromthe taxi industry. Motorists and passengers

    falling

    victim tothis type of

    behaviourcan open

    a case ofintimidationand robbery

    (shouldmoney be

    demandedby weapon

    wieldingpeople).

This photograph was taken from a moving vehicle at one of the areas where

    this is happening.

    No

     joy

Need to get your drivers license renewed or do

your drivers license test? Perhaps you need

to do a roadworthy test on your vehicle? Well,

don’t try to get any of this done at the Greater

Tubatse Municipality’s facility in Praktiseer. This

office has been closed for an extended period

of time now, forcing people to travel to Mashish-

ing (Lydenburg) or Apel for assistance.

Apparently a lack of water supply and a prob-

lem with the roof caused the Municipality to

    close the station temporarily.

Upon inquiry it was not immediately clear when

the station will be re-opening. The repairs mustapparently first be finished and then the Provin-

cial Department for Roads and Transport must

declare the facility fit for operation.

So, need some service? Go somewhere else.
