4 NEWS 17 JUNE 2011

Gone are the days when new developmentsused to attract buyers with manicured lawnsand extensive hard landscaping - nowadaysthe demand is all for natural vegetation, indigenous trees and wildlife left undisturbedas much as possible. And fortunately, says Hoffman Prinsloo, MDof leading residential developer CranbrookProperty Projects, this co-incides with

increasing efforts on the part of mostdevelopers to protect the environment andensure the proper management of naturalresources within their new residentialestates.“Of course, most new housing developmentsthese days will in any case only be approvedonce an environmental impact assessment(EIA) has been done there is an

environmentalmanagement planin place, but thereare quite a fewdevelopers, likeourselves, whohave trulyembraced the“green” approachand aim to domuch more thanthe minimumrequired by law.”This wholeheartedcommitment toeco-friendlydevelopment, hesays, is clearlyevident inCranbrook’s newMotaganengLifestyle Estateand SpekboomRiver Estateprojects locatedeast of Burgersfortin Limpopo, “whereprospective buyers

can already see how the appeal and valueof new homes is enhanced when eco-friendly practices are incorporated into newdevelopments”.Among the most important of thesepractices, he notes, is the deliberate andproper management of storm water andother water resources to prevent wastage, reduce erosion and prevent the pollution ofany streams, rivers or dams. Cranbrook alsohas a dedicated game and environmentmanager on site at these estates whoseresponsibilities include the removal of alienand invasive plants as well as the protectionand planting of indigenous species ofvegetation. And walking trails with rest spotswill be a feature of both estates to enableresidents to observe the abundant birdlifeand small game in their naturalsurroundings.

In addition, the estates will have no unsightlyoverhead cables for electricity orcommunications connections. As part of theextensive infrastructure already completed, underground “sleeves” have been laid tocarry all the necessary cables. Provision hasalso been made in the architecturalguidelines for all the homes in the estate tobe sited in order to make the most of naturalairflow and minimise the use of airconditioners and heaters to regulate indoortemperatures. “Obviously,” says Prinsloo,“eco-friendly development is neither easynor inexpensive, but we believe it is vital forthe future viability of the projects we areinvolved in, and our commitment isreinforced every time we see theappreciative reaction of potential buyers inour estates to the beautiful natural settingswe are creating for their homes.”

6 NEWS 17 JUNE 2011

16 June - still being celebrated?

Ms Ntombizikhona Coko said: “It is worthcelebrating because we are where we aretoday because of those people. I think itdeserves a big celebration. Our youthtoday don’t care about the struggle andwhere we came from. They don’t have theinformation”.

Ms Taprina Makola said: “Some peopleknow why we have Youth Day, somedon’t and for them it is just a holiday. I’mworking on Youth Day”.

Mr Xolani Ncane said: “If you are apolitically active person it will still havemeaning to you to celebrate Youth Daybut if you are just a normal communitymember, it is just a holiday. It depends.Old guys and guys from the 70’s willknow the meaning, but for the rest it isjust a part of history”.

Mnr.

Mr Richard Lefine said: “People just takeit as a holiday and not as a day ofrememberance”.

Mr Gadson Komane said: “Most peopleknow about 16 June. It is part and parcelof our history. Learners and educatorsmust remember this day and not onlyfocus on current events. 16 June and 27April are all important. If the childrendon’t celebrate, they will eventually forgetit”.

Mr Daron Mogane said: “I think it is goodto celebrate it as it reminds us of peoplewho fought for us all those years back. Ifit was not for them, we would not havehad this democracy we have today”.

Regs: Me. Hantie Oosthuizen sê: “Ek dinknie die mense weet waaroor dit gaan nie.Ons kinders mis nou net onnodig skool -hulle gaan net leeglê”.

Mr Jackson Tjati said: “I don’t seeanything that’s changed. It is just likebefore when people lost their lives. Nowthere is no education. There is no respectfor those who died for this. People mustknow the meaning of Youth Day”.

Mr Anthony Mashego and Mr Mishack Maapea said: “Youth Day is still important. Theyouth must be taught what 1976 was about. They fought for their education whiletoday’s youth don’t care. They drink, fight and don’t go to school. The municipal youthdesk and youth commissions must create programmes that go down to all the villagesand involve the youth and teach them. The youth from political organisations must alsofocus on the youth. They talk about nationalisation and alike while the youth suffer onthe ground. Government must also give funds directly to the schools to help improvethings. There should also be more technical schools so that those who cannot affordto go to university have some skills when they finish with school”.

On 16 June (yesterday) South Africacelebrated Youth Day. This public holiday wasset as a day of rememberance of the 1976Soweto uprisings when students andeducators clashed with government abouteducation in Afrikaans instead of their mothertongue. We asked readers whether they feel YouthDay is still relevant today, do people celebrateit, does the youth know what it is about andhow important they feel it is? Some also toldus how they will be spending the day.
