Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage after the incident that left one teenager dead and another one in a critical condition. They were hit by a train at White Road train crossing in Retreat on Wednesday 22 June. Charles Gates (16) and his friend his 13-year-old friend, whose name has not been confirmed, were playing close to the crossing. Pieter Rossouw, ER24 Spokesperson says: “When paramedics arrived on scene they found that one of the boys sustained severe head injuries. Unfor- tunately, there was nothing that para- medics could do for him and he was de- clared dead. “The other boy sustained critical in- juries including various fractures and head injuries. The injured boy was treated and transported to Groote Schuur Hospital for urgent treatment. The two boys were allegedly riding on a bike and apparently did not see the oncoming train when they crossed the track. The actual cause of the incident remains unknown and is subject to further investigation.” Kirstenhof police spokesperson Ser- geant Diedre Solomon confirms the in- cident. “This office can confirm that a train accident involving two boys took place on Wednesday 22 June. “Two boys on a bicycle were cross- ing a railway line at White Road when they got knocked off by the passing train. One boy died on the scene and the other was taken to hospital. A case of culpable homicide is been investi- gated,” she says. Retreat train collision kills teenager #GANGSTERISMMUSTFALL Youth demands TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji T he collective known as #Gangsterism- MustFall picketed outside the offices of the social development department in Wynberg on the morning of Thursday 23 June in demand of youth programmes. The purpose of the picket was to highlight and advance the plight of youth in communi- ties such as Lavender Hill, Parkwood and Ocean View who are affected daily by gang- sterism. The picket was attended by about 30 people – mainly the youth. Roscoe Jacobs, convener of the collective, says they will continue to advocate for youth programmes to prevent and disengage youth from joining gangs.“We will continue to fight issues that perpetuate gang violence. We will ensure the challenges our youth are facing, are addressed. We can’t watch and sit when things go wrong; issues have to be ad- dressed.” The group also handed over a memoran- dum to a social development representative. In the memorandum they stated they want issues of drugs and youth unemployment ad- dressed, and to have more youth pro- grammes so that there is no room to join gangs. “We want funding to start pro- grammes to keep the youths off the streets. Tough socio-economic conditions are the main challenge faced by the youth and they end up joining gangs. We believe if we also tackle these other challenges from grass- roots level, we will win the fight against gangs. Youth development is needed.” #GangsterismMustFall gave the social de- velopment department seven days to re- spond. Albert Fritz, provincial Minister of Social Development, confirmed they received the memorandum, however, his department “refuses to be drawn into a political game with aspirant fringe politicians”. “Our priority remains delivering services to all communities in the province. It is un- fair on the vulnerable segments of our socie- ty to be deprived of key DSD services whilst vested interest groups disrupt services. The department recognises the democratic right of citizens to protest peacefully and bring their concerns to the attention of govern- ment. However, among the group of about eight adults protesting, about seven chil- dren (most of school going age) were also seen (during school hours). There can be no excuse for using children and disrupting their schooling to fight community and/or political causes,” he says. Jacobs has lambasted Fritz’s claims, say- ing they are non-political. “That is a frustra- tion coming from the department. We lobby for communities and we want safe commu- nities. We will continue to campaign and not politicise the plight of the people.” The movement says they will continue to make their voices heard and to fight for the youth. They are planning a bigger march. Day (Monday 18 July) a special one for

the children at Patricias Home of Hope in

Vrygrond and we want our readers to be

    part of the celebration.

The facility is part of the Eniwe Chil-

drens Fund whose mission is to improve

the lives of abandoned and underprivileged

    children through various housing, feeding

and skills development initiatives in the

    Western Cape.

Peoples Post is taking thewords ofNelson

Mandela to heart when he said: Overcom-

ing poverty is not a task of charity; it is an

act of justice. Like slavery and apartheid,

poverty is not natural. It is man-made and

it can be overcome and eradicated by the ac-

tions of humanbeings. Sometimes it falls on

a generation to be great. YOU can be that

great generation. Let your greatness blos-

    som.

At present the home in Vrygrond cares

for 13 children (eight boys and five girls)

with ages ranging from 2 to 15 and our read-

ers can help us help themwith some of their

    needs.

To feed these children costs R7000 every

    month.

While cash donations are welcome, Peo-

ples Postwants to assist with grocery dona-

tions like samp and beans, pap, split peas,

lentils, canned foods, vegetables, pasta, pas-

ta sauce, juices, milk, butter, jam. There is

also a need for shampoo, soap, toothpaste

    and sanitary pads.

Donations of warm clothes and shoes

(new or second-hand) for the children will

    also be welcomed.

There is also the need for some handy

hands and building materials for improve-

ments to the homes kitchen and bathroom.

Some windows and door frames need to

be replaced, tiling or flooring for the facility

needs attention. A new bathroom suite, hot

water geyser and painting will also add

    comfort.

The facility is also looking for a new or

second-hand fridge in good working order

and a washing machine to hold a bigger

    than normal load.

There are also plans for some extensions

to the building to allow for more living

    space.

V Grocery and clothing donations can be dropped off

at Peoples Post office (3rd floor, Bloemhof building,

112 Edward Street, Bellville) before Friday 15 July.

Readers who wish to donate bigger items, building

material or offer their services can contact the Peo

    ples Post office on 021 910 6500 or post@peoples

    Programming Olympiad opens

Schools can now enter for the South Afri-

    can Programming Olympiad.

The first round of the olympiad will

take place from Monday 1 August and

will run until Friday 5 August.

Peter Waker, manager of the South Af-

rican Computer Olympaid Trust says the

olympiad, which is open to all school-go-

ing learners of any language, will give

    participants an opportunity to measure

    their programming skills.

Particpants can take part for an hour

during the week of the first round. Lean-

ers may use any language allowed by the

    school including Scratch and Alice.

Certificates will be awarded at three

grade levels ranging from Grade 10 and

below to Grade 12 and above.

Schools have a choice of online or off-

line. Some of the younger participants

have problems using the computer to

write programs and at the same time us-

ing the screen to read the question. These

schools may therefore enter for both off-

line and online so that learners can have

a printed question paper to work from,

    explains Waker.

The questions are available in English

and Afrikaans. Participation in the pro-

    gramming olympiad is free.

    Gold for Sozo Foundation

    TIYESE JERANJI

    @jeranji

    T

he Sozo Foundation in Vrygrond says

they feel excited, appreciative and hon-

oured to have won gold at the second annual

    Department of Social Development Youth

    Excellence Awards.

The award ceremony took place on Mon-

    day 20 June.

The awards are held in line with the

    Western Cape Governments youth develop-

ment strategy, which enjoins us to celebrate

and recognise the achievement of youngpeo-

ple across the province, says Albert Fritz,

    provincial minister of social development.

The awards evening had winners which

were divided into three categories bronze,

silver, and gold. Therewas anadditional cat-

egory for leadership and a specialMinisteri-

    al Award.

The foundation says being a gold winner

came as a surprise and it shows that their

work with the youth in the area has been ac-

knowledged by the department of social de-

    velopment.

    ElanaCuyler, co-founder of theSozoFoun-

dation, says since their establishment five

years ago they have seen exponential

    growth.

For us its a privilege to meet the needs

of the young people and partner with them.

It is a wonderful pleasure to see the young

people of Vrygrond being raised up to be

leaders in their own community. In future

they will bring positive change to our city

    and our nation.

When we witness the impact and trans-

formation taking place in the lives of the

young people and their families, we are

grateful for the opportunity we have been

granted to work in this beautiful vibrant

    community called Vrygrond, says Cuyler.

Over the past five years the foundation

haswalked a journeywith 370 young people.

Some of them have even moved to further

    education training.

We are striving to bring transformation

to the young peoples lives and families

    throughholistic development in our educen-

tre and youth caf projects. We are looking

    forward to bringing greater transformation

to the community of Vrygrond as we contin-

    ue collaborating with relevant stakehold-

    ers.

The foundation was one of the many win-

ners of the nightwhowere acknowledged for

    theirwork.Addressingmore than 650 guests

at the ceremony, Fritz emphasised the need

for a whole-of-society approach to youth de-

    velopment.

Fritz concluded the evening by saying

their efforts in government to develop and

empower young people cannot succeed in

isolation. I am making the call to you, the

people of thiswonderful province, to take up

the clarion call and work with our young

people. Let us create new opportunities and

industries. Let us create the enabling envi-

ronment and a society for our young people

that are based on freedom, fairness and op-

portunity. We can empower all young people

if we continue to work better together.

    entoring is an important empowerment

tool in all facets of society, and the visu-

ally impaired community has launched an

ambitious project to enhance skills in this

    area.

The mentorship initiative, aimed at tak-

ing the job placement programme for visu-

ally impaired people in theWestern Cape to

a new level, was launched by the Cape Town

Society for the Blind (CTSB) in association

with the DG Murray Trust and Evolve So-

cial Enterprise in Salt River on Wednesday

    22 June.

    Michelle Botha, career developer at

CTSB, explains that this initiative was pro-

    duced by developing strategies through

    comprehensive research and by liaising

with the Australian Network on Disability

    as well as local organisations.

It seeks to eventually put every visually

impaired student at CTSB under the men-

    torship guidanceof a successful personwith

a visual impairment employed in their field

    of interest, she says.

If successful, this program can become

a South African job placement blueprint for

visually impaired people in South Africa.

The society has through its job placement

strategies guided 176 visually impaired stu-

dents to employment since 2011, but seeks

to double its most successful annual figure

of 50 to 100 in the 2016/2017 period under re-

    view.

Our hope is that this pilot programme

will become a standard part of our career

development service here at CTSB, contin-

    ues Botha.

It will be rolled out twice annually and

create newmentors from the group of previ-

ous mentees who have gone on to succeed

in full-time employment. We also hope to

be able to provide a high standard of train-

ing for these mentors and to see significant

growth in employment figures for people

    living with visual impairment.

V For more information about the project Michelle

Botha can be contacted on 021 448 4302 or miche

officers who were responding to a shooting

incident near Van der Leur Court in Laven-

    der Hill.

n just over four months, the City of Cape

Towns Metro Police unit have made hun-

dreds of arrests with the help of CCTV cam-

    eras.

The Citys Strategic Surveillance Unit is

set to install additionalCCTVcameras to the

tune of nearly R12m in the new financial

    year.

The Safety and Security Directorate has

set aside around R7.4m for 10 new cameras

in areas like Goodwood, Silvertown, Bridge-

    town and Gatesville.

In addition 26 ward councillors have also

made ward allocation funding available to-

talling R4.45m for cameras in their respec-

    tive areas.

The Strategic Surveillance Unit is in the

    process of retrofitting existing cameraswith

    automatic number plate recognition (LPR)

capability and plans are being finalised for

the upgrade of the Citys fibre network sys-

    tem.

The City has introduced the Regulation of

External and Privately Owned CCTV Cam-

eras on City Property Policy, which was ap-

proved in June 2014 (Residents must regis-

ter CCTV cameras, Peoples Post, 8 Decem-

    ber 2015).

The policy aims to better regulate the in-

crease in privately owned CCTV cameras

that are installed on City land and infra-

structure and to keep an effective record of

    ownership of such infrastructure, should

footage be required in investigations by the

South African Police Service and informa-

    tion gathering by theCitys lawenforcement

    agencies.

Currently, the City has a network of 440

CCTV cameras in various parts of Cape

Town. In the first four months of the year,

the camera network detected 3313 incidents

including accidents, crime and fires among

others. A total of 108 arrests have beenmade

    during this period.

These incidents are but a few examples

of where our remote policing capabilities

have made a real difference. Even where ar-

rests arent made immediately, the footage

can also be useful after the fact to help the

police track down offenders, says Mayco

member for safety and security, JP Smith.

There is, however, still room for im-

provement. That being said, we are making

progress and those with criminal intent are

warned: you could be the next to be caught

    in the act.

I felt the Lord leading me to resign. Dur-

ing my last week of notice, I heard about the

(Logos Hope). I had no ambition of joining,

but the Lord led me, he says.

Meiring started his journey working in

the galley, before receiving safety training

and moving to the engine room. He now

    works as a general mechanic.

I still get seasick on every journey, he

    says, laughing.

Coming to Cape Town was the best feel-

oger Johnson (20) has been in the streets

for four years with his siblings because

they had to leave home as their parents

    were alcoholics.

Johnson sleeps at Kenilworth Centre and

he says life on the streets is no joke.

Its very difficult to be on the streets. You

dont knowwhere your food will come from

    or where you will sleep.

Being at home was even more unbeara-

ble because my parents didnt care and that

eventually drove us all out. At least on the

streets youget people that help youhere and

there but its not easy, he says.

Johnson is one of the people who were

helped by Storm Arnold from Grassy Park

who spent a few hours sleeping outside to

    help the homeless.

Arnold spent Friday and Saturday night

sleeping on the corner of Rosmead Avenue

and Wetton Road in Wynberg, acting as a

homeless person, to raise donations for the

homeless (Braving the cold, Peoples Post,

    7 June).

His initiative, #fillmeup for the homeless,

is a call to anyonewho canhelpwith clothes

blankets or non-perishable foods that canbe

    given to the homeless.

It was a cold evening on Friday but Ar-

nold said it was all worth it.

Im feeling so cold. Im shivering but I

know by being here I will help someone. Im

not worried about being cold because I

know after a few hours I will go back into

my house which is warm. What about those

that have spent years on the streets with no

warm clothes or warm food. By doing this

only for a few hours I know I will be able

    to help, he says.

While on the street, Arnolds recived blan-

kets, non-perishable food and money from

people that were asking what he was doing

and they were willing to support it.

Im so overwhelmed by the support that

Im getting. People are curious and when I

tell them what Im doing they dip in their

    pockets and help.

I prefer doing it this way than knocking

at peoples doors or approaching companies

because it will take a long process. With

companies or shops theywill tellme towrite

a letter and send it to their headquarters.

At least if Im here I will be able to help

    quicklywithout following all the channels,

    he says.

Arnold says he will be packing the blan-

    ketsnicely andwriting thenamesof thepeo-

    ple that donated.

I want the homeless to be filled with the

    warmthand love. Iwant them toknowwhen

they receive the blanket such a person

thinks about them because I will put the

names of the people who donated on the

    pack, he says.

People from different areas also joined

Arnold for a few hours to sleep outside with

him and donate blankets and clothes.

It was really fruitful. Some of the people

couldnt donate but being out here shows

that they care about the homeless.

I wont be stopping here. There is still a

lot of things Implanning to do for the home-

less. This is only the beginning and Im glad

    it went well.

V If you would like to assist with the donations for

the homeless contact Arnold on 061 874 8591

ife in SouthAfrica is notwithout its chal-

lenges and the new generation of future

leaders need courage to make that positive

    contribution to the future.

An organisation helping to instil that

courage is MOT South Africa, a registered

    and leadingpublic benefit andnon-profit or-

ganisation specialising in life skills devel-

    opment among the youth.

    With its programmes the organisation

works with the youth in a structured learn-

ing environment, teaching young people to

make conscious life choices that will enable

them to develop to their full potential and

    to show courage.

MOT hosted its annual general meeting

in Pinelands last week and it was obvious

that the project was making a major differ-

ence in the lives of young people across the

    peninsula.

Wanda Moller, CEO, explains that their

training programmes give young people the

strength to manage peer pressure, to be-

lieve in themselves and to take responsibili-

ty for their own lives and future.

    MOT (pronounced moet) is theNorwe-

gianword for courage. We focus strongly on

    the development of self-confidence, sound

values, positive attitude and behaviour, self

leadership and to resect and care for oth-

    ers, she says.

    Our life skills education programmes

are annually offered to 12 500 youth at all

the TVET Colleges and 23 high schools in

    the Western Cape.

    These programmes focus strongly on

empowering the youth to make conscious

choices, to develop their potential and to be

active and responsible citizens and leaders

among their peers and in their communi-

    ties.

When some of the participants in the pro-

gramme shared their experiences, it was

easy to understand why the activities are a

    stepping-stone to success and empower-

    ment.

Amanda Qamngana, a student at College

of Cape Towns Wynberg campus, explains

that it was difficult to put the experience in

    a nutshell.

I am one of the young people who face

many challenges in life, but after I went to

the Young MOTivators training camp, I

came back a different person, she says.

It has changed my life because now I am

hungry for success, I am hungry for change

and I want to be good in everything I do.

Ive learned the importance of making

my own choices with the courage to care

and courage to love in a warm, safe, loving

and fun environment. I met crazy but very

smart individuals. I am an introvert and I

was so scared about how Iwas going to cope

with meeting lots of new people, but I had

    the greatest time ever.

Start building a life for yourself

I have been living in Lavender

Hill for 32 of the 39 years which

my family have been in the

    area. I have witnessed many

    changes over the years: some

    positive, but mostly negative.

Two of the positive changes are

the role models we see in our

    community: people who sacrifice

    of their time, energy and

    personal resources to make a

difference in the lives of others.

    Another positive is that Laven-

der Hill has produced talent in

    government, entertainment and

    the broadcasting field. These are

people we can be truly proud of.

Not for one minute do I think

that being a parent in our

troubled area is easy. It is not. I

take my hat off to the parents

who own up to the challenges

which they have to face on a

    daily basis.

One thing I am firm on,

    though, is the loitering of

    youngsters. They are only too

happy to stand on street cor-

ners, and float from the one

dagga joint to the next, and

have no desire to work or uplift

    themselves. Instead, they prefer

to hang on to every word which

comes from the mouths of the

    Skebenga on the corner.

My mother would never let us

spend even a minute in the

    company of these people. We

were taught that not every one

can be your friend, but you do

not pull your noses up at

    anyone.

I see how parents leave their

homes in the cold, dark morn-

ings to go out and work so that

    they can feed their off-spring,

    most of whom are able-bodied

    males. These very same males

are allowed to float from the

    one corner to the other.

I take my hat off to the

parents who do not tolerate this.

To the youngsters I say: start

building a life for yourself, go

    out and do whatever honest

work you can, so that you can

help your parents put food on

    the table.

    Before you know it, your

    providing parent might not be

    there to help you anymore.

    Please, start now. Take whatev-

er honest job you can get, and

    earn your own money.

    EDUCATION

    How well do you

    know your child?

    South Africa recently marked

    YouthDay, the fortieth anniversa-

ry of the day when thousands of

    young SouthAfricans took a stand

    to demand freedom.

Those children are now in their

fifties, and living in a society they

could not have imagined in their

    wildest dreams.

    When theywere their childrens

age, television had just arrived in

    SouthAfrica. Nomicrowave oven,

no fax machine, no personal com-

puter, no mobile phone. Not even

a Star Trek fan then could have

    imagined the internet.

    To say that technological

    change since then has shaped

youth culture is a massive under-

    statement.

A young person today can get in-

    formation through Google, share

it with hundreds of followers on

Facebook, have a chat on What-

sapp, post a picture on Instagram,

send a tweet and post an update to

her web page. All this in seconds,

    using phones that havemore com-

    puting power than the supercom-

puters NASAused to put aman on

    the moon.

A 2012 Unisa study found that

85% of Western Cape high school

    learners had their own cell

phones, on which they access the

    internet daily for social network-

    ing, instant messaging and to

    downloadmusic. Most youth have

    profiles on social networking

    sites, and many unwittingly post

    and access personal information

that exposes them to the risk of

    pornography, sexting, cyberbully-

    ing, depictions of graphic violence

and drug use, and even the influ-

    ence of terrorist organisations.

While the fact that any person

anywhere in the world can in-

    stantly and privately communi-

    cate with and influence children

    should concern parents, there is

    no reason to panic.

Use the internet to educate your-

self and your child about the dan-

    gers. Use available technology to

reduce the risks, such as down-

loading apps that restrict access to

    adult content on the internet.

    There are many helpful websites

    for parents seeking advice, such

    as www.cyberbullying.org and

    www.netsmartz.org.

If your child is using the phone

    obsessively, establish a reasona-

ble daily limit on phone time and

stick to it. Or restrict use by limit-

ing money spent on airtime or da-

    ta.

    Alongwith thesemeasures, par-

ents can control the risks by fol-

    lowing communication-based

    strategieswith their children. The

better you know your child, the

easier it is to get them to protect

    themselves and use technology re-

    sponsibly.

Show an interest in her daily ac-

    tivities and social circle. You

might know the names of her best

friends, but do you know where

they live? Have you met their par-

ents? What music is she listening

    to? Whos her favourite artist?

    Does her favourite teacher know

    you?

Make time every day to listen to

him with no distractions and no

    judgement.

Youth is a time of experiment-

ing with ideas, so respect his opin-

ions and allow them to be different

from yours. Be part of his life. If

he plays an organised sport, at-

    tend matches and practice ses-

sions, or volunteer to assist the

    club administration.

    By connecting daily with your

child, you will keep the channels

    of communication open, buildmu-

tual trust and ensure that the tech-

nology we use helps rather than

    harms your childs development.

    LETTERS

    Take child safety seriously

I needed to write this letter as I

    read how a caring person

    advised parents to teach their

    children to use a password

    when a stranger, potential

    abductor or sex predator

    approaches them. This pass-

    word system is supposed to

    protect children from strangers

who approach or speak to them.

We have to go deeper into this

    issue of our children and

    grandchildrens safety. The best

    instructors to teach our children

    about their personal safety are

    parents and teachers.

    The most important rule that

we must drill into our childrens

daily routine is to never talk to

or approach a stranger even if

    they know your childs name.

    Parents have to practice safety

hints with their children. We as

    parents must listen to our

    children and know their activi-

    ties and their habits.

    At home: Never open the

    door for strangers. Never engage

    in conversation with strangers

    when answering the phone.

There must be a list of emergen-

    cy numbers the child must

phone in the event of an emer-

    gency and the parents numbers

must be on top of the list.

    In public: Never just drop

your children off at a mall,

game arcades, parks or at a

friends home. Get out of the car

and escort them and do the

    same when you fetch them.

Never leave a child alone in a

    vehicle.

    At school: Make sure your

childs name is not visible on

    their clothing, backpacks,

    suitcases and lunch boxes.

Parents have to do a recce of

    the route their children take

and see if there are dangers. If

there are bushes have the local

councillor trim or cut these. See

if you can line your children up

with a buddy system to and

    from school.

    Communication on a daily

    basis between parents and

    children is vital. Children must

    be encouraged to address their

    concerns without fear reprisals.

A quote by Jeannine Lee: Your

children need to know they are

    loved and safe, everything else

    is adult business.
