Nursing students displayed their disgust on Monday 20 June after it emerged that the course they enrolled in is not accredited by the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Despite not necessarily needing the course to be accredited by the SANC in order to practice as a nurse, students set refuse bins alight in the courtyard of the campus, proceeding to break down doors and torch lecture rooms they were scheduled to write exams in. As a result, the campus has suspended its exams until the end of July, with college management set to meet with the national higher education department later this week. Sharon Grobbelaar, spokesperson for the College of Cape Town, explains the contro- versy circled around students who were en- rolled their Primary Health Certificate course, which says that the course is carried in the same capacity at other TVET colleges across the country. “The issue itself is not a college one, it is a national issue. She says students turned to violence be- cause they have not received the answers they wanted from DHET. t Peoples Postwe want to make Man-

dela Day (Monday 18 July) a special

one for the children at Patricias Home

of Hope in Vrygrond and we want our

readers to be part of the celebration.

The facility is part of the Eniwe Chil-

    drens Fundwhosemission is to improve

the lives of abandoned and underprivi-

    leged children through housing, feeding

    and skills development initiatives.

Peoples Post is taking thewords ofNel-

son Mandela to heart when he said:

Overcoming poverty is not a task of

charity; it is an act of justice. Like slav-

ery and apartheid, poverty is not natu-

ral. It is man-made and it can be over-

comeand eradicated by the actions of hu-

man beings. Sometimes it falls on a

generation to be great. YOU can be that

    great generation. Let your greatness

    blossom.

At present the home inVrygrond cares

for 13 children (eight boys and five girls)

with ages ranging from 2 to 15 and our

readers can help us help themwith some

of their needs. To feed these children

costs R7000 every month and while cash

    donations are welcome, Peoples Post

wants to assist with grocery donations

like samp and beans, pap, split peas, len-

tils, canned foods, vegetables, pasta, pas-

ta sauce, juices, milk, butter, jam. There

is also a need for shampoo, soap, tooth-

paste and sanitary pads. Donations of

warm clothes and shoes (new or second-

hand) for the children will also be wel-

    comed.

There is also the need for some handy

hands and building materials for im-

provements to the homes kitchen and

    bathroom. Some windows and door

frames need to be replaced, tiling or

flooring for the facility needs attention.

A new bathroom suite, hot water geyser

and painting will also add comfort.

The facility is also looking for a new

or second-hand fridge in good working

order and a washing machine to hold a

bigger than normal load. There are also

plans for some extensions to the building

to allow for more living space.

V Grocery and clothing donations can be dropped

off at Peoples Post office (3rd floor, Bloemhof

building, 112 Edward Street, Bellville) before Friday

15 July. Readers who wish to donate bigger items,

buildingmaterial or offer their services can contact

the Peoples Post office on 021 910 6500 or

    post@peoplespost to pledge their support.

Warrant Officer Hayden Johnson and Con-

lice station have arrested a Tanzanian man

for the illegal possession and dealing of

    drugs on Friday 17 June.

ta Norman says police were tipped off that

a house in Herbrand Street was an outlet for

    the sale of drugs.

336 bank packets of high-grade dagga. The

dagga seized have a street value of R16 800.

    ATHLONE STADIUM

    Right of way to schools

    EARL HAUPT

    @EarlHaupt

    T

    heCity of CapeTown, alongwithAthlone

    Stadium management, is scheduled to

meet with driving schools operating in the

    area.

This comes after deadline which was set

by the City to have driving schools cease op-

erations at Athlone Stadium at the begin-

ning of June. However, it has emerged that

these schools are still operating within the

parking areas on both the northern and

southern sections of the stadium precinct.

While the southern side of the stadium fac-

ing Klipfontein Road has been fenced, the

northern side facing Kewtown is only being

prepared to be fenced, saysward councillor

    Suzette Little.

Little says that the driving schools have

been given a fair opportunity to find a solu-

tion to the problem which would enable

them to continue. She says that they have

been in contact with the driving schools to

strike up an agreement, but therewere still

a few sticking points. She was concerned

at the ongoing usage of trucks in the area

behind the stadiumwhere some of the com-

    munitys children play.

    Little confirmed thatmoveswere afoot to

have a standing agreement in place to have

some of the driving schools continue to run

their operations on the site, but that negoti-

ations stalled because the various driving

schools could not reach a consensus.

The place is going to be fenced off. They

need to form a steering committee who will

sign a contract with the City. We will charge

thema tariff and theymust get public liability

insurance so that we can claim for damages

on that insurance. Theymust limit the people

using the facility. The funding that we get in

we are hoping to use towards the mainte-

nance of the area, added Little.

    Shouldanagreementbemet ornot, the road

signage around the stadium will be updated

to no longer allowheavyvehicles to drive into

    the stadium precinct.

A truck is seen performing a parking exercise in the northern parking area of the Athlone

Stadium. Should no agreement be met between driving schools and The City of Cape Town,

the City will shut down operations by Friday, 1 July. PHOTO: EARL HAUPT

    ifty pupils fromManenbergwill be taken

out of their comfort zone as they get the

opportunity to travel to Durban during

    their July holidays.

The Silence Violence project that has

been running at Rio Grande Primary has

successfully completed their Project 50:50 at

    the end of Youth Month.

    Monique Ponto from the SilenceViolence

campaign says the project fell short of its

target butwill however still enable 50 pupils

    to enjoy a well-deserved holiday.

Although falling short of our target, with

your help, the funds raised by Silence Vio-

    lencewill enable 50 learners fromRioGran-

de to have a memorable and enriching

school holiday. The pupils, accompanied by

their teachers, will be departing on Thurs-

day 7 July for the Garden Route and contin-

ue their journey to Durban, Ponto says.

And those who are not fortunate enough

to enjoy the same trip will also have some-

    thing to look forward to.

Fortunately, its not all Cape Town rain

and indoor gloom for those learners who

will remain behind. In collaboration with

the NPO Sporting Chance, 22 learners have

been rewarded with the opportunity to

watch the DHL Stormers take on the South-

ern Kings on Saturday 16 July, Ponto says.

For many, this will be a first. Silence Vi-

olence prides itself on creating these oppor-

tunities of firsts for our learners on the

    Cape Flats, she adds.

V Project 50:50 will run till Thursday 30 June. Anyone

    COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS ELDERS AWARD

    Elders making a difference

Schools can now enter for the

    South African Programming

    Olympiad.

The first round of the olympiad

will take place from Monday 1

August and will run until Friday

    5 August.

    Peter Waker, manager of the

    South African Computer Olym-

    paid Trust, says the olympiad

    will give participants an opportu-

    nity to measure their program-

    ming skills.

    Particpants can take part for

an hour during the week of the

first round. Leaners may use any

    language allowed by the school

    including Scratch and Alice.

    Certificates will be awarded at

    three grade levels ranging from

Grade 10 and below to Grade 12

    and above.

Schools have a choice of online

or offline. Some of the younger

    participants have problems us-

ing the computer to write pro-

grams and at the same time using

the screen to read the question.

    These schools may therefore en-

ter for both offline and online so

that learners can have a printed

    question paper towork from, ex-

    plains Waker.

    Participation is free.

    MANENBERG

    Kidnapping trio

    nabbed by detective

    EARL HAUPT

    @EarlHaupt

Suspects linked to an attempted kidnapping

and a spate of robberies were arrested in

    Manenberg on Tuesday 21 June.

Three men, aged 19 to 28, were arrested

    for robbery and kidnapping.

    According to Manenberg police spokes-

person Captain Ian Bennett the three men

were arrested after an intensive investiga-

tion by Detective Constable Darryl Van

    Noie.

The case was reported by a 28-year-old fe-

male victim who was robbed and the sus-

pects attempted to kidnap her while on her

way to take public transport, in the Van-

    guard Estate area.

She managed to fight them off and they

fled the scenewith her personal belongings.

Detective Constable Van Noie received the

case and found that the description of the

vehicle has already been reported as a vehi-

    cle used in committing robberies.

He collected information and made en-

quiries and finally got a breakthrough the

same day. He received information that the

vehicle, fitting the description, was parked

    at an address inManenberg, confirmsBen-

    nett.

Bennett says Van Noie then found the ve-

hicle after following up information which

matched the description given in all of the

    other incidents.

Van Noie also found the victims posses-

sions in the vehicle, which included her

    cellphone.

He was thorough with is investigation

and found that the 28-year-old was wanted

for several other cases including carjacking

and he was out on bail for a case relating

to the illegal possession of firearm. He is al-

so wanted on a theft of a motor vehicle case

in Mitchells Plain and wanted for armed

robbery on a Manenberg case, adds Ben-

    nett.

The suspects were arrested and will be

charged with these kidnapping and rob-

    bery.

Bennett urges anyone who has experi-

enced any incidents similar to these crimes

to contact Van Noie on 021 699 9400 to assist

him with completing his investigation and

    build a strong case.

Over R15 000 of tik sniffed out by police

Manenberg police have arrested six men,

aged between 30 and 47, on Wednesday 23

June in a drug bust valued at R10 000 when

38 packets of tik, already concealed and

    packaged, were seized.

    Manenberg police spokesperson Captain

Ian Bennett says the crime prevention unit

was conducting patrols when they received

    informationof drugdealing inThamesAve-

nue. The information led police to a Wendy

house where they found six men, two of

    which were packaging tik.

In another incident, police arrested a 40-

year-oldman for the possession of and deal-

ing in tik and dagga. Police on patrol inHei-

    develd received information regarding a

suspicious person dealing in drugs at an ad-

    dress in Winterberg Crescent.

Police siezed 25 packets of tik, 16 sticks

of dagga and a half mandrax tablet.

keeper shot in the chest three times.

    Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zi-

ta Norman says on arrival at the store offi-

cers were informed by witnesses that two

unknown suspects entered the shop. One,

wielding a firearm, asked Is he the guy?

before firing three shots. The suspects then

    EARL HAUPT

    @EarlHaupt

    A

group of Statice Heights residents have

taken it upon themselves to uplift and

    better their immediate surroundings.

Amina Rajap, a community worker, says

that the project to clean the streets and beau-

tify the area began around three weeks ago.

The project, which uses volunteers from

the area, serves a purposemore than simply

    clearing Statice Heights.

This is also to bring unity to the commu-

nity amidst of all the bad things happening

here, like the drugs and children becoming

    little gangsters, says Rajap.

She says the initial response has been fa-

vourable, but that there are still stumbling

    blocks. We startedwith 16 andnowwehave

23 people who are part of the project. There

are people in our community who are com-

ing in to break down the project that we are

trying to keep together, she adds.

She says that other residents areunder the

notion that those who choose to volunteer

for the project will never earn an income for

what they do, thus discouraging any more

community members from joining the up-

liftment project. We are volunteering and

now they are telling the people that they are

going to be volunteers forever, but with this

volunteering we know that there are oppor-

tunities, because ifwe bring their names for-

ward, hopefully they will then form part of

some other paid project (in the future). So

that is the one reason why we started this,

because of the high level of unemployment.

Other than the cleaning project, Rajap

says the other volunteers started planting a

herbal garden in one of the streets in Statice

    Heights.

We are preparing the field in Basil Cres-

cent.Wedonot just only plant the herbs. The

people sometimes do not know how to use

the herbs. We want to use the one side of the

wall, where we can put the names on of the

herbs and (their uses) so that people do not

    waste it.

Rajap says that she does not see a limit to

    what the project can achieve.

On the other side of Statice Heights, be-

cause we have a soccer team and we are

starting a netball team soon, they want to

utilise a piece of land and convert it into a

soccer practice field, a netball field and pos-

    sibly a cricket field.

The project has recieved support from

ward councillor Suzette Little, the neigh-

bourhood watch, a ladies group called the

Womens Circle as well as students from the

    University of Cape Town.

Rajab states that anyone from the commu-

nity is welcome to join the project and that

they should approach her directly instead of

    relying on second-hand information.

The people from Statice Heights who do

not know anything, are welcome to contact

meor they arewelcome to come tomyhouse.

When people aremisinformed, then they be-

    come dangerous.

V For more information about the project or to join

    contact Amina Ajab on 079 264 5293.

    SYBRAND PARK

    Teaching children through the arts

The Cape Craft and Design Insti-

    tute (CCDI) in partnership with

    various stakeholders, has con-

    ceived a groundbreaking educa-

    tional initiative the Africa A+

    Schools support network which

seeks to infuse creativity and inno-

vation into schools by using the

arts as a tool for teaching and

    learning.

The first three local Africa A+

    preschools are ABC Pre-primary

    in Lansdowne, iThemba in Capri-

    corn, and Chameleon Campus in

    SybrandPark.The schools have re-

ceived a week of professional de-

velopment and are now being sup-

ported by facilitators who are arts

practitioners from a range of disci-

    plines and ECD specialists.

    Africa A+ offers professional de-

    velopment and ongoing on-site

    support that enables the member

schools to think, plan and teach

    more creatively so that children

get excited about learning and also

    develop the skills that prepare

    them for lifelong success. Central

to this approach is the integration

of the arts, such as drama, dance,

    music, visual art, drawing and

    painting into the curriculum and

    learning process.

    CCDI executive director, Erica

Elk, says: We have inherited a

    country with issues unemploy-

    ment, poverty, social inequality

    and injustice. The generation com-

    ing through our schooling system

is not adequately prepared to deal

    with these complex issues. We

have to nurture the next genera-

tions differently and create a new

    stream of individuals who are

    more creative, with greater capaci-

    ty for innovation, critical thinking

    and problem-solving, to become

    our future leaders and pioneers.

    The Africa A+ Schools network

is beginning at the preschool level

because the first six years are the

most sensitive and critical in hu-

    man development.

In an A+ school children learn

    language through drama and play-

    acting, develop their imagination

    through movement and storytel-

    ling, learn science through drama

and visual arts, and are taught

    about patterning andmathematics

    through singing and creative

    movement.

    Africa A+ Schools supports

schools in realising the value of

    nurturing an imaginative and en-

    trepreneurial mindset in children.

The Cape Craft and Design Institute is assisting ECDs to teach through the

    arts.

Rushing to the top radio spot

    SAMANTHA LEE

    @Samantha_Lee121

    H

is passion and drive sees him on a steady

    rise to the top.

Yuzriq Meyer (24) went from home on a

couch to an influential radio presenter with

a steady social media and radio following.

His show on Bush Radio sees him on the

airwaves from Monday to Friday hosting

and producing his own show called the

    Breakfast Rush.

    TheWoodstockman recalls his journey as

    a calling.

    After I completedmy journalismdiploma

I was at home for about three months before

I started asking what am I going to do

    now?, says Meyer.

I was at an internet cafe looking for jobs

and saw the advert fromBushRadio looking

for interns. It was fate because the deadline

was in two days time, so I got my CV togeth-

    er and applied.

    This was in 2014.

    Meyer recalls being inappropriately

dressed and not very confident in himself.

There were 80 other people and I didnt

think I would get the job, but by the glory

    ofGod they likedmyenergyat the interview.

A week later I got the internship, he says.

    The three-month internship saw the

trainees undergo an extensive training in

    everything to do with radio.

At the time, there was no breakfast show

at the station and this saw Meyer and two

others be the first to host and produce a

    show from 06:00 to 09:00.

We started the show in April 2014. Last

year I started doing the show on my own

andwas able to bring inmore elements that

    represented me, he says.

The show has since seen a surge in inter-

    est, especially with daily guests.

He recalls thousands of interviews since

    the shows inceptionandhashad the oppor-

tunity to feature many dancers, artists,

DJs, actors and other influential people in

    the community.

I was always very talkative and had a

flamboyant energy which meant I was al-

ways happy to express myself. I was very

into music in high school and to me some-

one had it made when their music was on

the radio. When I started here, my percep-

    tion changed, he says.

He says radio is his calling and he is for-

tunate enough to beworking at a communi-

ty station, being community driven him-

    self.

I wanted to give people a platform to

    change their lives, he says.

Meyer has recently started a stint at CTV

    as a presenter as well.

I always wanted to be on TV but since

I started at Bush, my love for radio is great-

    er, he says.

With his social media following growing

by the day, Meyer says he did not expect

    this response.

I knew a lot of people so I started with

a good fan base, but I never guessed I would

be so influential. But I am blessed because

I did not ask for this it fell into my lap.

I am doing this for the right reasons. There

is a difference between wanting to shine

and letting your work shine for you, he

    says.

    Hehas alwaysbeenamotivational speak-

er and encourages young people to follow

    their dreams.

Some people who follow me on social

media may think this looks like a glamor-

ous life, but they dont understand that all

that glitters is not gold. Youmust have pas-

sion and confidence and be willing to sacri-

    fice, he says.

    Meyerhopes tomoveon tobiggerandbet-

    ter things in future.

I want to do what I am doing now but

on a bigger scale where I can reach a bigger

    audience.

I have big love for Bush Radio and CTV

but with a bigger fan base I can change

more lives. It is not about the fame for me,

but rather the opportunity to change the

fabric of society and the way they think,

    he says.

V You can catch the Breakfast Rush on Bush Radio

on weekdays from 06:00 to 09:00. Follow Meyer on

Instagramor Twitter@Yuzriq or like his Facebook pa-

ges: Mr Meyer or The Breakfast Rush.

Yuzriq Meyer (24) hosts and produces his own show on Bush Radio. This passionate young

man originally from Athlone is on a steady rise to the top with a growing fanbase to prove it.
