ctivity at the College of Cape Towns

Crawford campus has ground to a halt

    following violent protests last week.

    Nursing students displayed their disgust

onMonday 20 June after it emerged that the

course they enrolled in is not accredited by

the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

    Despite not necessarily needing the

course to be accredited by the SANC in order

to practice as a nurse, students set refuse

bins alight in the courtyard of the campus,

proceeding to break down doors and torch

lecture rooms they were scheduled to write

    exams in.

As a result, the campus has suspended its

exams until the end of July, with college

management set to meet with the national

    higher education department later this

    week.

    Sharon Grobbelaar, spokesperson for the

College of Cape Town, explains the contro-

versy circled around students who were en-

    rolled their Primary Health Certificate

course, which says that the course is carried

in the same capacity at other TVET colleges

    across the country.

The issue itself is not a college one, it is

a national issue. All the colleges were aware

of the situation, but in the words of one of

the directors of the Department of Higher

    Education andTraining (DHET), the qualifi-

cation does not have to be registered from

the nursing council, it never has been and

does not ever need to be, because it is not

a nursing qualification and that is the big

    issue, Grobbelaar says.

She says that the college will be working

very closely with DHET along with the stu-

dent body to come up with an amicable solu-

    tion to the stand-off.

DHET are also expected to address the stu-

    dents.

They are speaking to the Department of

    Health, because students originally request-

ed that the DHET develop this qualification

to fit into their framework going forward,

    adds Grobbelaar.

She says students turned to violence be-

cause they have not received the answers

they wanted from DHET. The total damage

has yet to be determined, but clean-up opera-

tionswere already in full force by themiddle

    of lastweek,with thedamage seemingly con-

tained to the central section of the campus.

The Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI)

    in partnership with various stakeholders,

    has conceived a groundbreaking education-

    al initiative theAfricaA+Schools support

network which seeks to infuse creativity

and innovation into schools by using the

arts as a tool for teaching and learning.

The first three local Africa A+ preschools

    are ABC Pre-primary in Lansdowne,

    iThemba in Capricorn, and Chameleon

Campus in SybrandPark. The three schools

have received a week of professional devel-

opment and are now being supported by the

Africa A+ facilitators who are arts practi-

tioners fromarange of disciplines and early

    childhood development (ECD) specialists.

    Africa A+ offers professional develop-

ment and ongoing on-site support that ena-

bles the member schools to think, plan and

teach more creatively so that children get

excited about learning and also develop the

skills that prepare themfor lifelong success.

Central to this approach is the integration

of the arts, such as drama, dance, music, vi-

sual art, drawing and painting into the cur-

    riculum and learning process.

CCDI executive director, Erica Elk, says:

We have inherited a country with issues

    unemployment, poverty, social inequality

    and injustice. The generation coming

through our schooling system is not ade-

quately prepared to dealwith these complex

    issues.

We have to nurture the next generations

differently and create a new stream of indi-

    vidualswho aremore creative,with greater

    capacity for innovation, critical thinking

and problem-solving, to become our future

    leaders and pioneers.

The Africa A+ Schools begins at the pre-

school level as the first six years are the

    most critical in human development.

In an A+ school children learn language

    through drama and play-acting, develop

    their imagination through movement and

    storytelling, learn science through drama

and visual arts, and are taught about pat-

    terning and mathematics through singing

and creative movement. Africa A+ Schools

supports schools in realising the value of

    nurturing an imaginative and entrepre-

    neurial mindset in children.

sphere of life, and more importantly for the

    deaf community.

June Bothma, a sign language teacher, is

hosting courses for people who know others

    Lansdowne woman

    entrepreneur lauded

    A

flair for fashion and empowerment has

    set a Lansdowne woman winning.

Amiena Pastor was nominated at this

months Margaret Hirsch Women in Busi-

    ness Achiever (MHWIBA) Breakfast hosted

    at Hirsch Milnerton.

Through The Design Platform, Pastor in-

spires girls andwomen in communities that

have the desire and ability to create a busi-

ness but lack the qualification and funding.

Her passion for fashion and womens em-

powerment is a good fit with her latest title,

the Margaret Hirsch Women in Business

    Achiever Finalist for May 2016.

Pastor studied a fashion design course at

    ElizabethGalloway and then completed her

in-service training at Mon Viso Knitwear

where she nurtured her love for bridal de-

sign, and this led to her starting her own

    bridal company from home.

She was headhunted by top designer Er-

rol Arendz with whom she worked for two

years, and her desire to give back to the

    community became ever stronger.

Pastor then threw herself full-time into

her bridal business but when a burglary set

her back financially she was emotionally

not in the right place to design, so instead

she turned to selling Tupperware and

    Shzen products.

It was during this time Pastor and anoth-

er entrepeneur cam upwith themarket day

concept. The IDeserve It projectwas initiat-

ed in 2010 and registered in 2012 as a non-

profit organisation that sets up platforms in

the form of pop-up shops or market days.

They also teachwomenwith a love for de-

sign the skills they need to be empowered,

like making their own patterns and basic

    sewing skills.

Since then the idea has mutated into a

company, The Design Platform, which is

aimed at designers who beyond market

days. Needless to say, Pastors determina-

tion to use design as her vessel for womens

    empowerment, enthralled the audience.

Fifty pupils from Manenberg will be taken

out of their comfort zone as they get the op-

portunity to travel to Durban during their

    July holidays.

The Silence Violence project that has

been running at Rio Grande Primary

    School has successfully completed their

Project 50:50 at the end of Youth Month.

    Monique Ponto from the SilenceViolence

campaign says the project fell short of its

target butwill however still enable 50 pupils

    to enjoy a well-deserved holiday.

The funds raised will enable 50 learners

from Rio Grande to have a memorable and

enriching school holiday. The pupils, ac-

companied by their teachers, will be depart-

ing on Thursday 7 July for the Garden

    Route and Durban, Ponto says.

And those who are not fortunate enough

to enjoy the same trip will also have some-

thing to look forward to. In collaboration

    EARL HAUPT

    @EarlHaupt

Abdullah Gangraker, owner of the Wem-

bley Group of Companies, died on Sunday

27 June. He failed to recover from a compli-

cated medical procedure following his ad-

    mission to Constantiaberg Mediclinic after

    falling ill three weeks ago.

    Affectionately known as Mr Wembley,

Gangraker took over the family business

after his father died in 1971. The company

has since grown to become a household

    name.

    However, Gangrakerwill be remembered

more for his charitable contributions not

only to his immediate community in Athlo-

ne, but also to those of his ancestral home

    in India.

He donated the land onwhich the current

site of the Masjidul-Quds is found and

served as one of the mosques founding

members. This is site at which thousands

of mourners gathered to bid their respects,

before laying Gangraker to rest at the John-

    ston Road cemetery.

    Sataar Parker, chairperson of theMasjid-

ul-Quds board of trustees and spokesper-

son for the Gangraker family, says that his

friend was more than just a pioneer.

The man was a visionary businessper-

son with the Wembley Group of Companies

in Belgravia Road. It is an iconic setup

there. He was a philanthropist of a very

high calibre in terms of being the man who

donated the land for the building of the

    Gatesville mosque, says Parker.

One of Gangrakers many donations to

the community was an entire hall for the Is-

    lamia Complex.

Gangraker also looked after orphans and

also helped develop infrastructre in his an-

cestral village in India. He was a man who

waspassionate about doing things to perfec-

tion and we are very fortunate. Although it

is a sad loss, the loss came in the spiritual

    monthofRamadaan, so froman Islamic per-

spective, that actually is some sort of conso-

    lation, says Parker.

Despite the loss of Gangraker, the family

business is left in the able hands of his son,

    Mujeeb.

As far as the family is concerned, every-

thing remains as normal, his son will be

running the business and he is more than

capable of doing a job thatwould havemade

his father very proud. The example that he

has set show that nothing is unobtainable.

One just has to be focused to work on a plan

    and things will work out.

    SAMANTHA LEE

    H

is passion and drive sees him

on a steady rise to the top.

    Yuzriq Meyer (24) went from

home on a couch to an influential

radio presenter with a steady so-

    cial media and radio following.

His show on Bush Radio sees

him on the airwaves from Mon-

day to Friday hosting and produc-

ing his own show called the

    Breakfast Rush.

    The Woodstock man recalls his

    journey as a calling.

    After I completed my journal-

ism diploma I was at home for

about three months before I start-

ed asking what am I going to do

    now?, says Meyer.

I was at an internet cafe look-

ing for jobs and saw the advert

from Bush Radio looking for in-

    terns. Itwas fate because thedead-

line was in two days time, so I got

    my CV together and applied.

    This was in 2014.

    Meyer recalls being inappropri-

ately dressed and not very confi-

    dent in himself.

    Therewere 80 other people and

I didnt think I would get the job,

but by the glory of God they liked

my energy at the interview. A

week later I got the internship,

    he says.

    The three-month internship

saw the trainees undergo an ex-

    tensive training in everything to

    do with radio.

At the time, there was no break-

fast show at the station and this

saw Meyer and two others be the

first to host and produce a show

    from 06:00 to 09:00.

We started the show in April

2014. Last year I started doing the

show on my own and was able to

bring in more elements that rep-

    resented me, he says.

The showhas since seen a surge

    in interest, especially with daily

    guests.

    He recalls thousands of inter-

    views since the shows inception

and has had the opportunity to

    feature many dancers, artists,

    DJs, actors and other influential

    people in the community.

    I was always very talkative

    and had a flamboyant energy

which meant I was always happy

to express myself. I was very into

music in high school and to me

someone had it made when their

music was on the radio. When I

    started here, my perception

    changed, he says.

He says radio is his calling and

he is fortunate enough to bework-

ing at a community station, being

    community driven himself. I

wanted to give people a platform

to change their lives, he says.

    Meyer has recently started a

    stint atCTVasapresenter aswell.

I always wanted to be on TV

but since I started at Bush, my

love for radio is greater, he says.

    With his social media following

    growingby theday,Meyer sayshe

    did not expect this response.

I knew a lot of people so I start-

ed with a good fan base, but I nev-

er guessed I would be so influen-

tial. But I amblessed because I did

not ask for this it fell intomy lap.

I am doing this for the right rea-

sons. There is a difference be-

tween wanting to shine and let-

ting your work shine for you, he

    says.

He has always been a motiva-

    tional speaker and encourages

    young people to follow their

    dreams. Some people who follow

    meon socialmediamay think this

looks like a glamorous life, but

    theydont understand that all that

glitters is not gold. Youmust have

    passion and confidence and be

    willing to sacrifice, he says.

Meyer hopes to move on to big-

ger and better things in future.

I want to do what I am doing

now but on a bigger scale where

    I can reach a bigger audience. I

have big love for Bush Radio and

CTV but with a bigger fan base I

can change more lives. It is not

about the fame for me, but rather

the opportunity to change the fab-

ric of society and the way they

    think, he says.

V You can catch the Breakfast Rush on

Bush Radio on weekdays from 06:00 to

09:00. Follow Meyer on Instagram or

n just over four months, the City of Cape

Towns Metro Police unit have made hun-

dreds of arrests with the help of CCTV cam-

    eras.

The Citys Strategic Surveillance Unit is

set to install additionalCCTVcameras to the

tune of nearly R12m in the new financial

    year.

The Safety and Security Directorate has

set aside around R7.4m for 10 new cameras

in areas like Goodwood, Silvertown, Bridge-

    town and Gatesville.

In addition 26 ward councillors have also

made ward allocation funding available to-

talling R4.45m for cameras in their respec-

    tive areas.

The Strategic Surveillance Unit is in the

    process of retrofitting existing cameraswith

    automatic number plate recognition (LPR)

capability and plans are being finalised for

the upgrade of the Citys fibre network sys-

    tem.

The City has introduced the Regulation of

External and Privately Owned CCTV Cam-

eras on City Property Policy, which was ap-

proved in June 2014 (Residents must regis-

ter CCTV cameras, Peoples Post, 8 Decem-

    ber 2015).

The policy aims to better regulate the in-

crease in privately owned CCTV cameras

that are installed on City land and infra-

structure and to keep an effective record of

    ownership of such infrastructure, should

footage be required in investigations by the

South African Police Service and informa-

    tion gathering by theCitys lawenforcement

    agencies.

Currently, the City has a network of 440

CCTV cameras in various parts of Cape

Town. In the first four months of the year,

the camera network detected 3313 incidents

including accidents, crime and fires among

others. A total of 108 arrests have beenmade

    during this period.

These incidents are but a few examples

of where our remote policing capabilities

have made a real difference. Even where ar-

rests arent made immediately, the footage

can also be useful after the fact to help the

police track down offenders, says Mayco

member for safety and security, JP Smith.

There is, however, still room for im-

    entoring is an important empowerment

tool in all facets of society, and the visu-

ally impaired community has launched an

ambitious project to enhance skills in this

    area.

The mentorship initiative is aimed at tak-

ing the job placement programme for visual-

ly impaired people in the Western Cape to

    a new level.

The initiative was launched by the Cape

Town Society for the Blind (CTSB) in associ-

ation with the DGMurray Trust and Evolve

Social Enterprise in Salt River on Wednes-

    day 22 June.

    MichelleBotha, career developer at CTSB,

    explains that this initiativewas producedby

    developing strategies through comprehen-

sive research and by liaising with the Aus-

tralian Network on Disability as well as lo-

    cal organisations.

It seeks to eventually put every visually

    impaired student atCTSBunder thementor-

ship guidance of a successful person with a

visual impairment employed in their field of

    interest, she says.

If successful, this program can become a

South African job placement blueprint for

visually impaired people in South Africa.

The society has through its job placement

strategies guided 176 visually impaired stu-

    dents to employment since 2011.

It seeks to double itsmost successful annu-

al figure of 50 to 100 in the 2016/2017 period

    under review.

Our hope is that this pilot programme

will become a standard part of our career de-

velopment service here at CTSB, continues

Botha. It will be rolled out twice annually

and create new mentors from the group of

previous mentees who have gone on to suc-

    ceed in full-time employment.

We also hope to be able to provide a high

standard of training for these mentors and

to see significant growth in employment fig-

ures for people living with visual impair-

    Ten arrests in one week

Manenberg police have yielded great re-

sults in the past week after 10 successful ar-

    rests in three separate cases.

    Manenberg police spokesperson Captain

Ian Bennett says on Tuesday 21 June three

menwere arrested in connectionwith a rob-

bery and kidnapping case earlier the same

day. Three men, aged between 19 and 28,

    were arrested after intensive investigation

by Detective Constable Darryl Van Noie,

    Bennett explains.

The case was reported by a 28-year-old

woman who was robbed and almost kid-

napped by the suspects while on her way to

take public transport in the Vanguard Es-

    tate area.

She managed to fight them off and they

fled the scenewith her personal belongings.

Van Noie received the case and found that

the description of the vehicle has already

been reported as a vehicle used in commit-

    ting robberies, Bennett says.

After making enquiries and collecting in-

formation, Bennett says the detective made

a breakthrough in the case on the same day.

He received information that a vehicle

fitting the description was parked at an ad-

dress in Manenberg. When he found the ve-

hicle, it matched the description and that of

all the other incidents. Van Noie found the

victims possessions in the vehicle as well,

which included her cell phone, Bennett

    says.

He adds it was also found that the 28-year-

old suspect was also wanted for several oth-

er cases, including hijacking, and he was

out onbail for the illegal possessionof a fire-

    arm.

He is also wanted on a theft of motor ve-

hicle case in Mitchells Plain and armed

robbery on a Manenberg case, says Ben-

    nett.

The suspects were arrested and charged.

They appeared in the Athlone Magistrates

    Court.

Anyone who experienced any such inci-

dent is asked to come forward and contact

Van Noie on 021 699 9400, so that he could

complete his investigation and build a

    strong case against these perpetrators,

    Bennett urges.

In a non-related incident, six suspects

were arrested for the possession of tik, esti-

mated at a street value of about R10 000.

The six men, between the ages 30 and 47,

were arrested on Wednesday 22 June while

police were conducting high density crime

    prevention patrols.

    Members received information of drug

    dealing in Thames Avenue, Manen-

berg. The crime prevention unit went

straight to the address and gained access to

the premises. The information led them to

a Wendy house at the back of the main

    house.

They found the six males in the shed

where two were packaging the tik into

    smaller packets, Bennett confirms.

Bennett says the brazen culprits tried to

throw the tik away, but they were caught.

    They tried throwing the contraband

through the window, but they were caught

red-handed. Altogether 38 packets of tik

were already packed and a large amount of

    uncut tikwas confiscated, valuedatR10 000.

The six males were arrested and appeared

    in theAthloneMagistrates Court, he says.

On Thursday 23 June police also arrested

another suspect for the possession of and

    dealing in tik and dagga.

The crime prevention unit was doing pa-

trols when they received information re-

garding a suspicious person dealing in

    drugs at anaddress inWinterbergCrescent,

Heideveld. The members went to the ad-

dress where they found a 40-year-old man

in a Wendy house at the back of the main

    house, Bennett says.

On searching him they found 25 packets

of tik, 16 sticks of dagga and a half mandrax

    tablet.

The suspectwas arrested and appeared in

the Athlone Court on charges of possession

    and dealing in drugs.

fraction of retail prices, making it affordable

for all walks of life. They also offer educa-

    tional activities and theatrical performan-

    ces on board the ship.

Many of the crew have never been to Cape

Town, the final stop on the ships SouthAfri-

    can leg.

However, Neil Meiring is coming home

after a 16-month stint at sea.

    Themechanic fromKensington joined the

ship after working as a car mechanic in the

    Cape Town CBD.

I felt the Lord leading me to resign. Dur-

ing my last week of notice, I heard about the

(Logos Hope). I had no ambition of joining,

but the Lord led me, he says.

Meiring started his journey working in

the galley, before receiving safety training

and moving to the engine room. He now

    works as a general mechanic.

I still get seasick on every journey, he

    says, laughing.

Coming to Cape Town was the best feel-

ing. When I saw Table Mountain, my heart

    wanted to jump out.

Over the past four decades the fleet ofGBA

Ships has been warmly received in over 500

ports in more than 160 countries, as the ship

    Start building a

    life for yourself

I have been living in Lavender

Hill for 32 of the 39 years which

my family have been in the area.

    I have witnessed many changes

over the years: some positive, but

    mostly negative. Two of the

    positive changes are the role

models we see in our community:

    people who sacrifice of their

    time, energy and personal

resources to make a difference in

    the lives of others. Another

positive is that Lavender Hill has

    produced talent in government,

    entertainment and the broadcast-

ing field. These are people we

    can be truly proud of.

Not for one minute do I think

that being a parent in our

troubled area is easy. It is not. I

take my hat off to the parents

who own up to the challenges

which they have to face on a

    daily basis.

One thing I am firm on,

    though, is the loitering of

    youngsters. They are only too

happy to stand on street corners,

and float from the one dagga

joint to the next, and have no

    desire to work. Instead, they

prefer to hang on to every word

which comes from the mouths of

    the Skebenga on the corner.

My mother would never let us

spend even a minute in the

    company of these people. We

were taught that not every one

can be your friend, but you do

not pull your noses up at anyone.

I see how parents leave their

homes in the cold, dark morn-

ings to go out and work so that

    they can feed their off-spring,

    most of whom are able-bodied

    males. These very same males

are allowed to float from the one

    corner to the other.

I take my hat off to the

parents who do not tolerate this.

To the youngsters I say: start

building a life for yourself, go

out and do whatever honest work

you can, so that you can help

your parents put food on the

    table.

    LETTERS

    Take child safety seriously

I needed to write this letter as I

    read how a caring person

    advised parents to teach their

    children to use a password

    when a stranger, potential

    abductor or sex predator

    approaches them. This pass-

    word system is supposed to

    protect children from strangers

who approach or speak to them.

We have to go deeper into this

    issue of our children and

    grandchildrens safety. The best

    instructors to teach our children

    about their personal safety are

    parents and teachers.

    The most important rule that

we must drill into our childrens

daily routine is to never talk to

or approach a stranger even if

    they know your childs name.

    Parents have to practice safety

hints with their children. We as

    parents must listen to our

    children and know their activi-

    ties and their habits.

    At home: Never open the

    door for strangers. Never engage

    in conversation with strangers

    when answering the phone.

There must be a list of emergen-

    cy numbers the child must

phone in the event of an emer-

    gency and the parents numbers

must be on top of the list.

    In public: Never just drop

your children off at a mall,

game arcades, parks or at a

friends home. Get out of the car

and escort them and do the

    same when you fetch them.

Never leave a child alone in a

    vehicle.

    At school: Make sure your

childs name is not visible on

    their clothing, backpacks,

    suitcases and lunch boxes.

Parents have to do a recce of

    the route their children take

and see if there are dangers. If

there are bushes have the local

councillor trim or cut these. See

if you can line your children up

with a buddy system to and

    from school.

    Communication on a daily

    basis between parents and

    children is vital. Children must

    be encouraged to address their

    concerns without fear reprisals.

A quote by Jeannine Lee: Your

children need to know they are

    loved and safe, everything else

    is adult business.
