Campaign takes to the streetsTAMMY PETERSEN
THREE thousand Manenbergresidents put up a united
front on Thursday in the first ofa series of protests focused on thescrapping of the rent arrears ofthousands of tenants living inthe City of Cape Town’s councilflats.
The peaceful march, which start-ed at the traffic circle in ManenbergAvenue, formed part of the Eers Kos,Dan Rent campaign and saw youngand old take to the streets armedwith posters asking the city to low-er their rent andwrite off their rent-al backlog.
Among the throng was RachelScheffers, a 63-year-old pensionerwhoowes the city overR10 000 inar-rears.
In her neat but well-worn shoes,
she chanted along with the assem-bled crowd and walked in the swel-tering heat with her neighboursand lifelong friends.
“When you know that you have somuch debt, it gets to you,” the com-munity volunteer says. “If I had themoney to pay up, I would. But whenyou have to decide between payingfor a flat, which you have loyally do-ing for 30 years, and feeding yourfamily, the decision isn’t all that dif-ficult.”
The mother of four adults lives ina two-bedroom flat with her chil-dren, 12 grandchildren and fourgreat-grandchildren.
“They are looking for jobs butcan’t find any. I can’t throw themout – where will they go? I don’tknow what to do any more.
“Where must I get enough moneyto look after my family, pay my gro-cery debts, put food on the table and
buy electricity? I have no other op-tion but to see that my children andextended family are fed before I seeto anything else.”
Scheffers says she applied forrent relief and was referred to theAthlone housing office, but stillhasn’t received confirmation ofwhether or not her application wassuccessful. “I regularly go to theManenberg office but they don’t doanything for me. When they wanttheir money, they want their mon-ey.
“But when you report problemsat your home, they take their ownsweet time to see to it. I have beenwaiting for three years for them tofix my door and my windows arefalling out of their frames.”
Mario Wanza, the chairperson ofProudly Manenberg, says memo-randums were handed to city repre-sentatives, who were given seven
days to respond to the organisa-tion’s demand for the scrapping ofrent arrears, as well as giving own-ership of council’s rental stock tothe tenants “who have been payingrent for all these years”.
“The level of employment is ex-tremely high and up to 80% of resi-dents are behind with their pay-ments. If they want their arrearsscrapped, they get sent from pillarto post and even if they give you arebate, you are still expected to pay.
“Mense moet a plan maak eventhough they don’t have money. Thepeople don’t want to pay any more. They want the homes they havepaid for for up to 30 years.”
Petitions drawn up in support ofthe campaign have seen 11 088 peo-ple stand behind Proudly Manen-berg and Wanza says the numbers“will grow in the community asmore and more residents have had
enough of this abuse against thepoor”.
A regional manager for the city’sExisting Housing Directorate ac-cepted the memorandum and com-mitted to relaying the organisa-tion’s demand for a meeting “assoon as possible”.
The march formed part of a pro-vincial campaign focusing on jobcreation, a solution to the housingbacklog and the scrapping of rentarrears.
Other organisations which havetaken the campaign to their areasare the Mitchell’s Plain People’s Fo-rum, the Hanover Park Civic Asso-ciation and Lavender Hill Civic As-sociation. “Our task isn’t just tofind a solution for the people ofManenberg, but also for those fromHeideveld, Bonteheuwel, HanoverPark and other areas which weregiven raw deals.”

New facility to speedup local health serviceTAMMY PETERSEN
A PLAN hatched four years ago byUCT and the Hanover Park Health
Forum finally came to fruition onThursday when the Hanover Park Stu-dent Learning Centre opened its doorsfor the first time.
The R680 000 facility, situated next to themain entrance at the local CommunityHealth Centre, will help reduce patients’waiting period to see a doctor.
The centre boasts three top-class con-sulting rooms, with hospital beds, chairs, desks and basins, and will serve as an ex-tension of the day hospital.
There is also a computer lab for the in-tern doctors.
Elizabeth Bantom, chairperson of the fo-rum, says the facility will go a long wayin speeding up service delivery to the peo-ple while helping student doctors gaintheir practical experience.
“All we can say to the roleplayers of UCTis a heartfelt thank you,” an excited Ban-tom says. “If it wasn’t for their dedication,we would not have seen this project cometo fruition. It’s a fantastic commitmentfrom them to us and we are exceptionallygrateful for it.”
Bantom says she lost hope that the facili-ty would ever be opened as many stum-bling blocks had to be overcome.
“I am over the moon that this day hascome and I know our people are going toappreciate it,” she enthuses.
Frank Molteno, who is part of UCT’s pri-
mary health care directorate, says theproject was funded by a special grant madeavailable by the Department of Higher Ed-ucation and Training.
“This is a huge step forward for the pa-tients, staff and undergraduates,” he says.“UCT students have been doing their com-munity service at this facility for years, and this venture expands the facilities, al-lowing more breathing space for bettertreatment as well as a better opportunityto teach for the students.”
The university has developed a “fantas-tic relationship” with “historically under-served” communities, he continued.
“We have launched similar ventures atcommunity health centres in Vanguard,Retreat and Mitchell’s Plain. Once we findsuitable space, one will also be launchedin Gugulethu,” Molteno says.
Professor Marian Jacobs, the dean ofUCT’s health sciences faculty, explains theproject is aimed at breaking the cycle ofstudents only being used at bigger facili-ties and not being introduced to communi-ty health centres.
“We hope that this facility will preparestudents for what lies ahead so that theyserve their purpose by providing qualityhealth care for all,” she says.
Bantom says the university is now “partof the fabric of Hanover Park”.
“We wish our student staff members thebest of luck for the noble task they will bedoing.
“They are now members of our familyand we hope the relationship will be fruit-ful.”

Official police vehicle‘used for furniture delivery’TAMMY PETERSEN
MILLIONS of rands go into thepurchase, maintenance and re-fuelling of police vehicles everyyear – money that comes fromthe taxes of hard-working peo-ple.
This is why a reader, drivingdown Main Road, Kenilworth, saw red when he noted a policebakkie being used for what hecalls a “removal service”.
The man, who asked not to benamed, says he noticed the Toyo-ta Hilux bakkie, which had“SCM Somerset West” and thepolice logo emblazoned on theside, driving down the road onSunday 20 February at about16:45.
The bakkie, which did nothave a canopy, was also transporting twoteenagers, an elderly man and two young menon the back.
The vehicle was carrying a fridge, stoveand other household appliances, causing thereader to tail it and see whether it was beingused for “official police business”.
“I first observed it coming out of AliwalRoad, where it turned towards Claremont. Ifollowed it and took down the registrationnumber,” he says.
“The vehicle made a right turn into Rouwk-oop Road in Rondebosch, which is a few hun-dred metres from the police station.
“It continued down the road and enteredthe parking of a block of flats, situated at thecorners of Rouwkoop, Ednam and KingsburyPark roads.”
He then watched as the plain-clothed driveroff-loaded the furniture and carried it insidea side door which leads to the rows of flats.
“I couldn’t see exactly where they were tak-ing the furniture. The people who were in thebakkie went inside before the man started off-loading and although I watched the bakkie forabout 30 minutes, they never came out.”
He claims that the vehicle was seeminglyalso being used as a “family taxi service”.
“This is not right as all government em-
ployees are well aware that state vehicles arenot to be used for personal gain,” he says.
Provincial Community Police Forumspokesperson, Hanief Loonat, says it’s “abso-lutely impossible” that the furniture beingtransported was part of official police duty.
“The offender should be brought to book be-cause this is abuse of police resources. Whathappened is totally unacceptable and strin-gent measures should be taken against theculprit,” he says.
The log books at the station should also bechecked to ensure that the kilometres wererecorded and authorisation was given,Loonat continues.
“It should be a cut-and-dry case. Only a de-tective commander, visible policing com-mander and sector commander canhandovervehicles.
“The travelling distance will reflect on thekilometre reader and then the fingered offi-cial has to face the music.”
He adds that police management has to “se-riously clamp down” on the abuse of their ve-hicles as using state resources for private useis “common practice”.
Colonel Mary-Anne Williams, the stationcommissioner of Somerset West police, saysshe will investigate the matter.

Mosque to mask Vodacom mastMELISSA PAPIER
FIRST there were “palm-tree” cellphonemasts in the middle of nowhere. Now cellularnetwork, Vodacom, is installing cellphonemasts inside the minarets of mosques.
Already cellphone masts have been in-stalled in mosques in Pelican Heights andDelft.
If everything goes according to plan, the Al-Masjiduth Thaalith Mosque in Beacon Valleywill be next in line.
An Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) is being conducted to establish the via-bility of building a cellphone mast inside themosque’s minaret.
The proposal has been given the green lightby the mosque’s trust, says Meiraai Jacobs, chairperson of the Al-Masjiduth ThaalithMosque.
“Earlier last year Vodacom made the pro-posal to the Al-Masjiduth Thaalith MosqueTrust and they gave consent for the mast tobe built in the minaret,” said Jacobs.
“The board decided it was feasible as therewas a monetary contribution which is to begiven to the mosque, should everything go ac-cording to plan and all procedures followed.”
Jacobs added that the minaret was chosenbecause, at 22 metres, it is the highest pointin Beacon Valley.
“If approved the mast will be built in theminaret, adding an extra six metres to theheight and it will be enclosed, posing no dis-turbance to anyone,” he said.
In earlier years minarets were used tomake announcements and call worshippersto prayer. In the past the imam physicallystood in these structures, calling people toprayers. Today many mosques use a soundsystem, where the speakers are placed in theminaret. Minarets are also seen as a markerto indicate to worshippers where the mosqueis.
Jacobs said masts have been installed inmosques in Pelican Heights and in Delft, without any problems.
Ward councillor for the area, Dennis Wil-liams, said the idea of having the masts insidethe minarets is “brilliant”.
“Now there will be no more funny-lookingmasts all over the place.
“It’s a good thing as the mosque will be get-ting a stipend from the service provider forhousing the mast. The antennae will also bestored in the mosque’s yard, which will be outof sight.”
Mark Day, environmental practitioner forEnviroworks, the company conducting theenvironmental impact assessment on behalfof Vodacom, says that cellphone masts needto be of a sufficient height to be effective inproviding a network signal to surroundingcellphone users.
He added that during initial investigations, service providers seek out locations with theability to accommodate masts and associatedstorage containers.
“Despite a site’s suitability to provide max-imum network coverage, landowner permis-sion may not always be granted, often leavinga small pool of sites available to accommodatethese structures.
“In the event that such sites house existingamenities in which masts can be disguised, measures shall be devised to make optimaluse thereof,” Day said.
The process for this application is current-ly in its initial assessment phase and submis-sions for objections can be submitted.
Nabewaya Mallick, public relations officerfor the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), saysthe installation of cellphone masts in mina-rets of mosques does not contravene the Is-lamic religion.
“Islam is very logical and if the mast doesnot harm anyone or interfere with the soundsystem of the mosque, there is no objectionsfrom our side.
“Vodacom should follow all procedures andget permission from the imam first before itcan be installed. If there is no interferencewhen the call for prayers are made, we don’tforesee a problem,” Mallick said.

Concerned Kenwynresidents take a standTAMMY PETERSEN
WALKING silently through the streetsof Kenwyn, a 1 300-strong group made
their presence known as they wordlesslysent a message to known drug dealers: weknow who you are.
The assemblage, carrying anti-drug plac-ards and banners, was made up of residents, community leaders, religious heads, localschool teachers, principals and businesspeople.
The one-hour anti-drug march has al-ready reaped rewards.
Yesterday, Nyanga Cluster CommunityPolice Forum chairperson Hanief Loonattold People’s Post that two of the 10 drug out-lets in the area have already stopped operat-ing and the occupants have vacated theirhomes.
“A property in Sir Alfred Road, which wasbeing rented, was voluntarily vacated onSunday, while another drug dealer in BlockRoad was kicked out of the house by his sis-ter. This is a great achievement for us andshows what can be done if we stand togetheras a community. It’s time for these mer-chants to realise that Kenwyn isn’t made upof residents who are sitting ducks,” he says.
Residents from Lansdowne and Ronde-
bosch East also took part in the march.MarkKleinschmidt, an executivemember
of the Kenwyn Safety and Security Associa-tion (Kensasa), says he was proud of the“wonderful spirit and camaraderie” whichthe residents showed.
“This was the first march of its kind inKenwyn, and we are proud to say that it wasan overwhelming success. It sends the mes-sage that we are serious about getting rid ofdrug merchants. The community respondedpositively to the call to stand together,” hesays.
“It’s fantastic to see the residents being sohands-on in the tackling of the drug scourgeand it shows that together we can do more.”
Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesper-son for Lansdowne police, says station man-agement is “impressed” with the action tak-en by the residents.
“We are very proud to see residents tak-ing a stand. Also, themanner inwhich itwasdone was exemplary. They are an exampleof how to fight drugs through peace.”

Taking conservationto the peninsula
TAMMY PETERSEN
A NEW conservation group saysit hopes to see areas across thegreater Peninsula become greenand eco-friendly in the comingyears.
The Flamingo Bird Club, which will be launched today(Tuesday), says it will especiallywork with schools to promoteawareness, conservation andprotection of wild bird specieson the Cape Flats.
“We look forward to takingscholars on outings to popularbird spots, where they will beable to view them, learn moreabout them and identify the var-ious species. It is also essentialthat they learn about the impor-tant role they play in the envi-ronment,” a passionate Sondaysays.
Plans to include the Depart-ment of Environmental Affairsand Development Planning inthe programme are also goingwell, he continues.
“The MEC, Anton Bredell, hasshown great interest in the initi-ative and we are looking atprinting pamphlets informingpeople on how to protect the en-vironment, as well as whichActs promote the protection ofnature and what the conse-quences will be if these laws arecontravened. There needs to bemore information spread about
conservation, as many poorerpeople are truly unaware ofthese laws.”
Sick and tired of illegal dump-ing? The group will also be fo-cusing on shedding light on theenvironmental impact filth hason the environment.
“While doing so, we would al-so like to see more trees plantedin our areas so that we can moveaway from the misconceptionthat the Cape Flats is made uponly of dirt and barren land. Wehope to work with governmentand investors to see more green-ery growing on the Peninsula.”
For those plagued by a rat in-festation, Sonday says the clubhas the perfect environmental-ly-friendly solution to the prob-lem.
“Wewould like to appeal to theCity of Cape Town to stop usingpoison to kill rats and instead in-vest in owl boxes.
“They cost about R700 but lastabout seven years. Owls feed onrats but if they eat vermin thathave ingested poison, the birdwill also be poisoned.
“Therefore the environmentwill thrive if the natural balanceto the ecosystem is restored andthe rat population will be con-trolled naturally.”
Anyone interested in contact-ing the Flamingo Bird Club canemail [email protected].

A REQUEST has been made tothe City of Cape Town to considerthe upgrading of the Lansdowneclinic, library and civic centre.
Ward councillor Pat Hill says hehas asked council officials to con-duct a feasibility study into the res-toration of council amenities totheir former glory.
He says that in the five years hehas served as a city representative,no major work has been done at thefacilities.
“This can potentially be a mas-sive job, so after an assessment isconducted we can look at how muchsuch a project will cost,” Hill says.
But residents shouldn’t expectany work any time soon, he warns.
“Money will have to be madeavailable for the project and areaswithout clinics are usually givenfirst priority.”
Mother Leandra Julius says theupgrade will be “Heaven-sent” asthe clinic is “incredibly crampedand tiny”.
“It’s amazing that it was consid-ered suitable for all these years. There has been a need for a larger, more modern space for the longesttime and these plans are long over-due. Hopefully it happens as soon aspossible.”
Her son, Courtney, gurgles as shedescribes how “uncomfortable andinconvenient” it is to spend time atthe clinic.
“Perhaps they can make it biggerand employ more health workers. It
will make an enormous differenceand things will only get better fromthere. The staff employed by theclinic are top class and also deservebetter working conditions.”
Young bookworm Aashieka Allie(6) says she would love the libraryto become “as huge as (her) house”and be filled with more picturebooks.
“When it’s nice and big more peo-ple will come,” she adds.
Her mother, Firdous, says the ex-tra space, as well as the possibilityof housing the library on a singlelevel, will make it look “much moreattractive”.
“You actually feel claustrophobicin there. Either they will have to re-locate it or they will have to put ourrates and taxes to good use and sup-ply us with a suitable library.”
People’s Post previously reportedon complaints received from locals, who say the civic centre looks like
it’s “caught in a time warp, stand-ing in a century in which it doesn’tbelong” (“City plans to do its civicduty”, People’s Post, 9 November).
Lansdowne Civic Associationchairperson, Esme Gradwell, saysit’s “about time” for change as resi-dents have been complaining aboutthe buildings’ state for years.
“There have always been somany promises but very little tonothing materialised. Hopefullythe waiting game will come to anend soon and we will actually see allthese commitments coming to frui-tion,” she says.
Gradwell adds it’s time for resi-dents to speak out about what theywant to see happening in their area.
“We need less talk and more ac-tion. Take a stand and question theauthorities. Tell them what youwant to see changed and keep fol-lowing up until something hap-pens.”

Drug death in ‘brothel’TAMMY PETERSEN
IN a neat, well maintained house in aquiet street in Ottery, a man died of a
suspected drug overdose on Tuesday, al-legedly surrounded by drug addicts andprostitutes.
The house in leafy Forest Hill Close, whichwas being rented to his girlfriend from thebeginning of the month, was under surveil-lance by the Lansdowne police for a week af-ter a tip-off pointed to it being used as a broth-el and drug den.
The 42-year-old, who was from Diep River, was declared dead at the scene and a post-mortem is being conducted to confirm thecause of death.
Warrant Officer Gregory Gray, who han-dles investigations at the station, says he re-ceived a tip-off two weeks ago from a localwho suspected that the house was being usedby sex workers.
“We started monitoring the activity at thepremises and a few days later, we receivedanother call from a concerned resident whofeared that drugs were being sold on the prop-erty.
“With these suspicions, we continued theobservations and planned an operation forFriday last week to search the house.”
It is understood that the house is on themarket as the home owner has relocated toLondon.
The property is being rented out by theagency handling the sale.
Gray says he was contacted on Tuesday af-ter the man’s body was found inside a bed-room.
“It is understood that the man’s girlfriendphoned an ambulance when she noticed thathe was not breathing. When an emergencyvehicle got there, he was declared dead at thescene by paramedics.”
However, he continues, one of the medicalteam reported that upon their arrival, agroup of people was seen fleeing the house, with most of them getting away in two cars.
“He suspected that they might have been
using drugs on the premises and a search wasconducted.
“Two large packages of mandrax mixedwith dagga were confiscated, as well as twobottlenecks which contained drug residue.”
When the woman was questioned, she de-nied having any knowledge of illegal sub-stances on the premises.
Gray adds that during the observations, acar belonging to a man believed to be in-volved in a drug and prostitution ring operat-ing from a Lansdowne house was also regu-larly seen parked at the premises.
Majidie Abrahams, the chairperson of theLansdowne Community Police Forum and al-so of the Ottery Civic Association, says themost important component needed to stop il-legal activities is more community involve-ment.
“People need to report their suspicions tothe authorities. If you see something strangehappening across the road from you, let thepolice know.
“If you sense that your neighbour might becommitting a crime from his property, speakout. There is a big difference between beinga busybody and protecting your neighbour-hood.”
Abrahams says people have to move pastthe misconception that criminals only oper-ate in “dilapidated houses with broken win-dows”.
“These things happen even in the most fan-cy homes. Criminals know how to mix inwith law-abiding citizens and sometimes ap-pear to be the most decent people. Don’t bescared to sound the alarm if something seemsout of place.”
He adds that he plans to initiate a discus-sion with the various law enforcement agen-cies to look at feasible solutions to a problemthat is “happening all over the precinct”.

KENILWORTH CENTRE will be host-ing a Shavathon between 10:00 and16:00 on Saturday 5 March in supportof the Cancer Association of South Af-rica (Cansa) in their promotions courton the ground floor.
CANSA turns 80 years old this year andthis will be the eighth national Shava-thon.
“Everyone is invited to shave or spraytheir hair in a multitude of colours andshow solidarity with a cancer survivor
with a R50 donation, while children un-der 12 pay R25,” says Terry Pollock, theKenilworth Centre manager.
Losing your hair is a common side-ef-fect of chemotherapy, which is why par-ticipants shave their heads as a symbolicgesture of support for cancer survivors.Colouring your hair has become an op-tion for those who prefer not to shave.

Well done, Kenwyn residentsHATS off to the Community Police Forumand the Lansdowne Visible Police Sectorfor mobilising residents of Kenwyn andthe local community to participate in ananti-drug march.
Approximately 1 000 concerned resi-dents braved a chilly evening to attendthe march, indicative of their support forthe initiative. A strong police presencewas evident, with senior SAPS officialsattending the well organised anti-drugcampaign.
They promised to arrest known drugmerchants fingered by residents, declar-ing war on them.
Marchers brandished placards depict-ing anti-drug slogans.
A national survey has revealed that theWestern Cape has the highest percentageof drugusers, andPremierHelenZille hasreported that the provincial governmenthas developed an anti-drug policy to com-bat the scourge of rampant drug abuse.
The establishment of several drug reha-bilitation centres has been budgeted for,but these may take years before beingbuilt.
Well known authority on anti-drugstrategies and the establishment of localsupport groups, Dr EV Rapiti, made animpassioned plea to parents to take re-sponsibility for their children’s actionsand refrain from becoming comatose orenter a state of denial regarding theirchildren’s drug abuse, and the conse-quential breakdown in family life.
Drug abuse is a threat to the growingnumber of teenage addicts, and druglordsand known drug peddlers must be rootedout and driven from civil society.
The anti-drug march by Kenwyn resi-dents to raise awareness of the pandemicof drug abuse in our communities, illus-trated that collectively we can achievemore, than individually on our own.MARK KLEINSCHMIDT, KENWYN
Please stop the prostitutionWHY is nothing being done about the prosti-tution in the Lansdowne and Wetton area? The police seem to be helpless.
When you drive through Constantia youdon’t see so much as a vagrant along theroad.
I ask myself with tears in my eyes whyLansdowne is being turned into a brothel. That’s exactly what’s happening.
Girls stand on every street corner sellingtheir bodies. The ladies of the area shouldstart taking stock and not walk around withtheir heads buried in the sand.
It could so easily be your husbands andboyfriends who are picking up these girls of
ill-repute.They walk from corner to corner like sales-
people selling their wares and nobody doesa thing to stop them.
Where oh where are our community lead-ers? Have they all become chicken-livered?
Drunk drivers are being named andshamed. What about these middle aged menwho pick up these young girls and pay forsexual favours? They too should be namedand shamed.
Lansdowne should unite and clean up ourstreets because nobody else will!PATRICK ABRAHAMSLansdowne
Apology to all Andaaz customersTHE most unfortunate incident happened onThursday 18 November, the day after Eid.
I was on my way to open my shop whenI got a phone call to say the shop’s gates hadbeen welded closed.
Later the same morning, the landlordbroke into the shop (without any court orderor sheriff) and took possession of all mystock, including all my customers’ things, and invoice books.
I have no means to contact anyone, exceptto leave contact details with the shop nextdoor.
The landlord’s reason for doing this is be-cause we owe him an outstanding balance ofrent.
This is true, and is due to slow business, but he had no right to do this, which in SouthAfrican law is called theft.
But according to the landlord, he doesn’trespect South African law and did this theEgyptian way (taking the law into his ownhands).
Three months later, I’m still in court try-ing to get possession of all customers’ and mygoods.
Our next hearing date is Monday 7 Marchat the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
I ask all customers please try to under-stand and pray for us. Give us some supportwhich we had from you all the years.
Anyone who needs to contact me abouttheir stuff or for any stitching needs feel freeto contact me on 073 1696 456.
My humble apology for any inconven-ience.ANDAAZ BUTTGatesville

Primary Healthcare, to patients and interested members of
the community, focusing on Health Education, and offer
regular Health checks and information for Chronic Life

By developing this concept, Health has improved, jobs

been given to those who have been marginalised because
of poverty and social disadvantage.
We, Dr Cyril Parker and Dr Elisabeth Parker, have
travelled different countries, researching and working in
Health systems tha provide equitable and affordable
Healthcare for all citizens. Our biggest wish is to
contribute to alleviate poverty by empowering people in
Health and education and make a difference in people’s
lives. To this end, we have returned to South Africa
where we have established Simunye Primary Healthcare
(SPHC) and Simunye Health Education (SHE).
Simunye meaning “We are one”.
SPHC and SHE have been created in impoverished,
previously historically disadvantaged communities in the
Cape Flats in Cape Town, with the principles of
Affordability, Access and Quality Healthcare for all.
SPHC is based on offering people Primary Healthcare 7

MulderdownsFalconsGLENTHORN pitcher Lau-ren Mulder recorded a rareno-hitter to shut out FalconsSAPS in a Western ProvinceSuper League softball matchon Saturday.
Mulder fanned one batterand allowed a walk to frus-trate Falcons in the six in-ning’s match at the City ParkSports Complex.
Glenthorn scored the deci-sive run in the fifth inningwhen Courtney Stevens’ hitscored Alex Fortune. Stevensbatted 1-3, Deidre Sasman 1-1,Fortune 1-2 and Mulder 1-2.
Falcons pitcher Megan Fill-more fanned one batter andconceded a walk before beingreplaced by Nicky Jones, whofaced one batter to finish thematch.
This win keeps Glenthornand Westridge Yan-kees – with two matches to goin the league race – tied on 28points after 16 matches at thetop of the log.
Glenthorn will face Old Mu-tual Cubs, while Yankees– who beat Cubs 7-1 at theweekend – will challenge Fal-cons at 18:30 at City Park onSaturday.
Wins for Glenthorn andYankees in their penultimateleague matches will see themmeeting in a league decideron Saturday 12 March.
Tough tussle awaits StormersStormersTASMIN CUPIDO
IT WILL be a battle up front when theDHL Stormers take on the Toyota Chee-tahs in the third round of the 2011 SuperRugby competition at DHL Newlands onSaturday afternoon.
And despite the Stormers managing to pipthe Lions 19-16 in their opening match lastweekend, Allister Coetzee and his team willneed to focus on getting the team to work asa unit. A “rusty” and unorganised display ofrugby was produced by the Stormers in thefirst half, with John Mitchell’s men surpris-ing the men from the Cape with a fast andattacking game plan.
Leading 9-8 at half-time, with only Lions’centre Waylon Murray having visited behindthe tryline and all the Stormers points com-ing from the boot of flyhalf Gary van Aswe-gen, the Stormers returned to the field with-out their gutsy leader Schalk Burger, whosuffered a blow to his knee during the firsthalf.
Pieter Louw replaced Burger and was in-fluential throughout the match, tackling likea demon, dominating at the breakdown, scor-ing the men in navy blue’s only try and call-ing the shots in the battle between the looseforwards.
But the Lions showed heart and determina-tion, with the match finishing four minutesinto injury time. They set up more than 15phases from the Stormers’ 22, in an attemptscore a try and break the hearts of the Storm-ers and their fans. But the Stormers managedto steal the ball in the loose with a wobblyDewaldt Duvenhage pass being kicked overthe sideline by fullback, Conrad Jantjes.
And coach Coetzee was the first to admitthat his team did not play to their full poten-tial. “I am happy with the win. One can recti-fy mistakes and system errors, but you can-not coach guts, never giving up and refusalto be defeated,” he said after the match.
“Derbys are tough and we did well to holdthem out. It’s difficult to bye in the first weekof the competition. We looked rusty, butwhen it mattered, we pulled through. Theteam has matured and gained a lot of experi-ence.”
And that experience will have to be provedagainst the Cheetahs on Saturday.
The men from Bloemfontein were unluckyto lose 23-25 to the Vodacom Bulls at homelast Friday evening, after leading 23-8 at half-time. In the process, they also lost captainJuan Smith, who suffered a torn Achilles ten-don and is in doubt for the rest of the season. However, his replacement, Ashley Johnson, reigned supreme in the company of bignames such as Pierre Spies, Deon Stegmannand Dewald Potgieter. He was awarded theman of the match award in the end.
Johnson, originally from the Cape, will belooking to show his worth to Cheetahs coachNaka Drotské, by building on last week’s per-formance.
Flanker Kabamba Floors also impressedon defence, while the always-grinding tightfive gave the players in the Bulls engine rooma run for their money.
If the Stormers want to secure the win andan invaluable home bonus point, they haveto revert to the running rugby their support-ers became accustomed to last year. Whilethe forwards have been securing possessionin the loose, the ball seems to be dying in thebackline.
Perhaps backline coach, Robbie Fleck, should consider selecting star prospect Juande Jongh at centre, breaking the convention-al Springbok centre pairing of Jean de Vil-liers and Jaque Fourie.
De Jongh was instrumental in the Storm-ers’ road to the final last year, also gettinga Springbok call up. He impressed when hewas brought on in the last 20 minutes and hisagility and attacking and defensive play, aswell as his ability to step, is missed in a rath-er one-dimensional Stormers outfit.

Ballers battle to hit it offBallers battle to hit it offBRIAN GAFFNEY
THE Baseball Association of Western Province(BAWP) and the WP Softball Federation (WPSF)are engaged in a tense stand-off that has cooled thegoodvibesbetweentheseone-timecloseassociates.
What is upsetting the WPSF officials is that a revisedBAWP fixture programme clashes with the forthcom-ing National Provincial Tournament (NPT) for softball-ers – and that threatens to de-plete the provincial men’s soft-ball squad.
So much so that several topbaseballers – who are also mem-bers of men’s softball clubs in theWPSF – have withdrawn fromthe WP squad that will partici-pate in the NPT in Tshwane from17 – 21 March.
The problem is that they havecommitted themselves to theBAWP Major League competi-tion that climaxes on the week-end 19-20 March – despite thesoftball officials calling a meet-ing with their baseball counter-parts in an attempt to resolve theimpasse in mid-February.
One of the pressing concernsfor the WPSF that came to lightin a Softball South Africa (SSA)media release on Wednesday 23February, is that the men’s softballers who have with-drawn from the WP squad “will lose the opportunityto to represent their country” in the 2013 World Cham-pionships scheduled for New Zealand.
According to the SSA, the training squad for thechampionship will be selected at the national provin-cial tournament in Tshwane.
The players who have withdrawn include SA base-ball pitcher Carl Michaels, Tyrone Brandt, Lloyd Ste-vens, Leon Dodgen, David-Lee Alexander, Nigel Kerch-hoff, Faizel Moosa and Che Adams from the title-chas-ing Athlone Athletics Baseball Club.
They are all members of the Hamiltons Men’s Soft-ball Club, with the exception of Dodgen and Alexander, who represent Devonshire.
Greg Lendis, the president of the BAWP, said hismanagement committee – comprising the chairper-sons of all clubs – were “unanimous in its decisionagainst postponing fixtures (19 and 20 March), as thiswas the last week available to complete the league pro-gramme”.
The other contentious issue raised in the media re-lease from SSA vice-president Noore Nacerodien, isthat Hamiltons were unable to field a team against arch
rivals Pirates – in a knockout semi-final on Sunday 6February due to BAWP fixturing matches for the sameday.
But Lendis said that blame should not be laid entirelyat baseball’s door. “It must be noted that the WPSF didnot inform us of their fixtures as well as the provincialchampionship”.
“We serve our players and they have the choice toparticipate in any sport that they wish to do,” saidLendis.
Denise Paulsen, the president ofthe WPSF, said yesterday she washopeful her federation could per-suade BAWP officials to changetheir stance on the matter at an ur-gent meeting later this week.
“Softball and baseball do not needto be at loggerheads. We need towork together in the best interest ofour members,” said Paulsen.
What influences the Athlone Ath-letics’ baseballers’ commitment totheir club most is that Athletics areclose to regaining the Major Leaguetitle they lastwon in the 1995/96 sea-son.
Another incentive for Michaelsand company is that the SA Base-ball Union (SABU) has been invitedto participate to two major interna-tional events within the next threeyears They are the 2011 World Se-ries in Taiwan in October and the
World Baseball Classic hosted by Major League inAmerica in 2013.
Edwin Bennett, the executive director of the SABU,said yesterday that the SABU will decide at the end ofMarch –prior to its senior inter-provincial tournamentin George from 3-9 April – whether to accept the invita-tion for the World Series.
Bennett explained that the SABU will then approachthe Lotto Board for funding – like it had previouslydone – to cover tour costs. This saw each national play-er only contributing R2 000 in the past, thanks to theLotto funding. The 2013 World Baseball Classic is anall-expenses paid venture for the 16 qualifiers – courte-sy of Major League America.
The SSA, on the other hand, does not enjoy the samegood fortune as the SABU. The SSA has been unableto secure Lotto funding or major sponsorships for itsmen’s and women’s teams that participated in Interna-tional Softball Federation (ISF) championships in re-cent years, like the 2010 World Series for women in Ven-ezuela and the 2009 World Series for men in Canada.
The majority of national players that hail from theWPSF each raised close to R30 000 to cover tour costsfor them to don the green and gold.
