Director’s MessageIt has been a long and cold winter; fortunately summer is just around the corner! The Recreation department does an amazing job of serving the Penfield community with quality recreation programs, well maintained parks, and trails. The summer season is the perfect time to get out and enjoy all of the amenities the Town of Penfield provides. The programs and services available through the Recreation Department are second to none. I encourage each of you to take time to explore the area and visit some of the marvelous amenities and various activities available through our Recreation department.

The summer brochure is full of exciting programs for all ages; we have a full slate of summer camp opportunities as well as an extensive swimming lesson schedule. The summer amphitheater schedule is highlighted this summer by the Zac Brown Tribute Band! We are excited to once again offer a Jazz and Kids Fest Series for four consecutive weeks this summer. Be sure to check out the schedule located on page 37 of this brochure. June is Wellness Month in Penfield and new this year is a “Mile Swim Club.” This free program is a great way to celebrate the month and participate in a new Wellness program. Another new event being offered this summer is “Tour de Farm.” This unique event will showcase many of our farms in Penfield. More details on both of these programs can be found in this brochure as well as our website (www.penfieldrec.org). If you have not yet “liked” Penfield Recreation on Facebook, please do as we have lots of program information on the site!

Some of the greatest memories center around time spent with family and friends here in the Penfield community during the summer months. I hope to see you at some of the activities, and if you have any questions on the upcoming season please feel free to contact me directly.

suPeRvisoR’s Message

T h e R e c r e a t i o n Department has once again put together an impressive lineup of programs for all ages that includes hikes, trips, lectures, camps, special events, and more. Our dedicated team continually looks

for programs to meet your needs and interests throughout the year. If you have a thought or idea for a program we do not offer, please let our staff know and we will research interest and presenters to see if it can be added to our schedule. As always, I encourage you to register early as our programs are popular and fill up quickly. Also consider registering online at www.penfieldrec.org; many of our programs offer a 10 percent discount for registering online.

My message in last year’s spring recreation brochure began with, “This past winter has been one like we have not seen in a while.” Well, I stand corrected! The 2014/15 winter season was unusually long and cold. Snow and ice management is not an easy task and everyone seems to have an opinion as to why we should be doing more or less plowing and/or salting, and when we should or should not deploy crews during various weather events. Our dedicated men and women of the DPW do a fantastic job in the worst conditions to keep roadways and walkways as safe as possible for our residents. Therefore, the only comments I will make this year will be to recognize and thank our Department of Public Works for all their efforts…great job guys!

We have been informed by the NYS Department of Transportation that they will

be resurfacing Rt. 441 from East Ave. to Dublin Road this summer. This project will involve milling the pavements and re-paving both lanes east and west bound. We have asked NYSDOT to perform as much of this work as possible in the evening hours to minimize traffic congestion along this very busy roadway. Additionally, Rt. 250 will be resurfaced from Rt. 441 south to Rt. 96. We will post all the final details for when these projects will begin, hours of work, and other information on our website (www.penfield.org) and social media. If you don’t already, be sure to follow us so you can stay up to date with Penfield news.

The 2015 concert series at the Penfield Amphitheater & Kiwanis Stage will kick-off on Friday, May 29 featuring Jim Doser School Bands and food trucks from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. The season features four Cool Jazz Tuesdays, four Kids Fest Thursdays, and two Saturday performances. We wrap up the season on September 12 with the always popular “Tastin’ the Blues” with music, a chili contest, and sampling of locally brewed beer. Details of all these events are included in this brochure, so mark your calendars and join in on the fun and great music!

The Penfield Library continues to grow and expand story times and children’s programs. Librarian Bernadette (Bunny) Brinkman and her staff, working closely with the Friends of Penfield Library, have been very creative as they help our youngest residents become more involved with this wonderful asset in our community—the Penfield Library! For more information and details on all library programs, go to www.penfieldlibrary.org.

As of January 1, 2015, the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act has banned disposal of

electronic equipment in trash, curbside pick-up, and landfills. (See www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/66872.html).

Since then, many residents have asked me how they can properly dispose of electronics. The following is an excerpt I captured from the ecopark website for your information and use:

There are several major electronics recyclers operating in Monroe County (including Sunnking, RCR&R and Maven Tech.) with drop-off locations. Cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs and computer monitors are accepted at the ecopark for a fee ($10 each - credit/debit card only). Flat panel TVs and monitors are accepted free-of-charge. Your local Best Buy store will accept (free-of-charge) up to three CRTs per customer, per day for recycling (32 inches and smaller - no console TVs or exposed CRTs). Electronics retailers that offer delivery service may offer free ‘haul-away’ for the item you are replacing. The New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act requires manufacturers to provide a free and convenient way for consumers to recycle computers and computer peripherals (cable, cord, or wiring permanently affixed to or incorporated into such product) including: monitors, electronic keyboards, electronic mice or similar pointing devices, facsimile machines, document scanners, printers (only those items intended for use with a computer and weighing less than 100 lbs.), televisions (as well as cathode ray tubes) and small scale servers.

For more information on ecopark, please log on at www.monroecounty.gov/ecopark.

Healing and Transformative Power of MindfulnessMindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you’re mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. The classes will include how mindfulness practices can be used to overcome life’s challenges such as loneliness, alienation, aging, relationships, trauma, illness, physical pain, and death, and how these difficulties can become pathways to greater psychological freedom.

- Wisdom at its finest hour! -Daytime Education at Recreation

deaR

“The DEAR program has provided an opportunity to learn about things I always wanted to know about but never had the time (or motivation). Each course is led by a volunteer, most of whom know (or prepared) an amazing amount about a subject and add immensely to the learning experience already incorporated into a Great Course or other format. The class participants are fun, friendly, curious, and often also have a wealth of knowledge about the subject. The DEAR programs have been a wonderful, instructive, and enjoyable experience that I am so lucky to have access to. As Hercule Poirot says, it is important to exercise the little gray cells - use ‘em or lose ‘em!” - Diane Meyer, DEAR participant 2011-2015

“I already work on keeping my body healthy and the DEAR program is keeping my brain healthy. It is so exciting to learn new things.” - Pat Schmeelk, DEAR participant 2012-2015

“The DEAR programs provide intellectual stimulation without the hassle of going downtown. Its diversified topics should appeal to many interests.” - Christina Gutt, DEAR participant 2012-2015

Why Would They Want That? The Strong Museum of PlayAround our homes, we throw things away because they’re out of style, sell them at garage sales because the kids have outgrown them, or tuck them into attics or basements because we might need them “someday.” But history museums need to add the objects of everyday life—from houses, malls, and landfills—to their collections in order to give museum visitors—now and in the future—an accurate picture of life in the United States during the last half of the twentieth century. This lecture takes an informative and entertaining look at how the National Museum of Play deals in a rational and realistic way with all the “stuff” that’s too young to be an antique.

The History of GardeningThe home garden has become an essential element of American life. Whether the garden contains flowers, vegetables, or landscaping, people seem to have a need to channel their “inner farmer.” Gardening has a long and fascinating history. This presentation will examine how gardens have changed through history, important gardening innovations and their inventors, and the intrepid plant explorers who discovered some of our most popular garden plants.

Worthwhile Hints: 0This 45-minute presentation will be filled with smart, out of the box, inexpensive helpful hints you may never have thought of to make life a little easier. Did you know adding a raw egg or two to a pot of sauce helps cut the acidity of the tomatoes? Or that you can keep brown sugar soft by storing a couple of marshmallows in the bag? Many more useful tricks will be demonstrated and shared in this fun filled lecture. Feel free to bring some of your own helpful hints!

Laura Ingalls Wilder - An Unvarnished VoiceThis February, the annotated autobiography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, landed at the top of Amazon’s bestseller list, beating out frontrunners such as American Sniper. What makes readers in our 21st century so enthralled with a book handwritten onto notepads by a 62 year old woman who had just lost her life savings in the stock market collapse of the Great Depression? The new autobiography, Pioneer Woman, tells a harder, adult version of the famous American Fairy Tale people have known through both the Little House Book series and the popular television show “Little House on the Prairie.” Come hear the unvarnished voice of this woman born two years after Appomattox. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s journal has much to tell us about what we share and what we owe to brave, unknown Americans in our past.

Beyond Susan B. Part IIMany people in Rochester are familiar with Susan B. Anthony and her colleagues Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott in their fight for women’s rights and suffrage. The fight for women’s suffrage spanned 100 years. In that time, there were many important figures that came before and after the “big three” that significantly advanced the cause of women’s rights leading to the suffrage amendment. We will continue our look to learn more about some of these other female figures who helped reform women’s civil rights.

Frederick Remington -The Territory of Western ArtThrough his paintings, illustrations, sculptures, and writings, Frederick Remington is known for capturing some of the first artistic images of the American West. This lecture will look at his early life and career, highlighting several of his most important work, as well as discuss the artistic process he used to create some of the most thrilling sculpture of his time. Several of his sculptures and prints will be on display at the presentation. Although Frederick grew up in Canton, New York and lived most of his life in New York State, he made numerous visits to the west, collected western artifacts and did most of his work in his studios in the Adirondacks. Much of his work is housed in the “Frederick Remington Art Museum” in Ogdensburg, NY - well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Reading & Discussion Series

linColn on The Civil waR

Fridays, May - June

:00 AMThis series allows participants to examine and appreciate the rhetoric, political skill, and moral transformation of the sixteenth president. His words are a window into the mind of a canny politician and deep thinker considering the central questions of Civil War era: the nature of democratic participation; how to navigate the turbulent partisanship and regionalism of the antebellum era; the secession crisis and outbreak of civil war; the meaning of the nation’s bloodiest conflict; and, finally, the task of “binding up the nation’s wounds” and protecting the newly won citizenship of African Americans at the close of the war.

Participants will read selections from “Lincoln on the Civil War: Selected Speeches.” This volume includes nine of the sixteenth president’s most stirring addresses on issues of freedom, civic duty, slavery and the Constitution. The addresses include his early 1838 speech “Address to the Young Men’s Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois,” his famous “House Divided” and Cooper-Union speeches, as well as important wartime addresses.

Copies of the text will be available to participants to use for the duration of the series. You may pick up a book at the Penfield Recreation office prior to start of program or at first class.

Registration begins early - 4/20.

The Science of Mindfulness Mindfulness is the practice of intentional, non-judgmental awareness of moment-to-moment experience that has been practiced since ancient times in both East and West. Wisdom traditions have for thousands of years recommended mindful practice in a variety of forms to cultivate well-being in an individual’s life. Now science is confirming these benefits. Here, we’ll explore the common elements of these practices and review the research findings which affirm that daily mindfulness practice is good for your health. We’ll then explore a new field called interpersonal neurobiology that integrates a wide range of sciences and other ways of knowing about reality into a common language that illuminates the subjective world of the human mind. We will be offering a fee-paid program beginning 8/17 that will allow participants the opportunity to apply the techniques talked about in this class. See page 22.

Mr. Lincoln: The Life of Abraham LincolnDescription of the course from the Great Course website: What made Lincoln great? What was it about him that struck those who knew him? This course explores those questions with the help of an authority who, in his own words, has “spent many years trying to get to know this man from afar,” and in doing so has become one of the country’s most distinguished Lincoln scholars and an award-winning author for his books about Lincoln. Professor Allen C. Guelzo will lead you on “a great adventure,” a tour of Lincoln’s life, from his forebearers’ arrival in America through an evaluation of how his legacy lives on for us today. You will come to know Lincoln through the eyes of those who knew, lived with, and worked with him. This course is being offered along with the New York Council of the Humanities Adult Reading and Discussion program “Lincoln on the Civil War: Selected Speeches”. See page 32.

Mark Twain’s definition of a classic book is “A book which people praise and don’t read.” Classics of American Literature is an opportunity to read or re-read those very important texts and discuss their relevancy to the American experience. They are authors and titles that have somehow shocked, destabilized, or changed the scope of American society. Penfield PlayeRs

“Deathtrap” by Ira Levin

A classic thriller with plenty of twists!Seemingly comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a

“dry” spell that has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller which Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit. Sidney’s plan, which he devises with his wife’s help, is to offer collabo-ration to the student, an idea which the younger man quickly accepts. Thereafter suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist and turn with devilish cleverness, and with such an abundance of thrills and laugh-ter, that audiences will be held enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play.
