Lake Tams Renovation– Get the 411! The entire lake will be dredged and the shoreline will be stabilized with a combination of concrete block retaining wall and vegetative retaining wall. A sediment forebay, which will allow sediment to settle from the incoming stormwater runoff, will be constructed to include an energy dissipater (which will ultimately reduce scour and erosion). The forebay berm, installed to isolate the sediment deposition to a specific area, will decrease the amount of maintenance required, and have a walkway, to provide access across lake. This asphalt walkway will begin at the parking lot near the skate park and end on the opposite side of Lake Tams. Due to the stormwater elements that were incorporated, the project was partially funded by a Department of Environmental Quality grant. The work is estimated to start in June 2015 and will end around September 2015.

What is footgolf? It’s a combination of golf and soccer, using a regulation soccer ball. Footgolf is played all over the world! The idea is to kick off from tees while attempting to get the ball in a 21–in diameter cup in the least amount of strokes. There is a separate hole used from the golf course hole. The footgolf holes range from 50 yards to 180 yards. The course is 18 holes and the same rules for golf apply. This sport can be played alongside and in between regular golfers. Conduct and etiquette are a must, as to not distract others on the course. Just like golf, you must call for a tee time. This is a walking sport at Gypsy Hill. We want to promote healthy active living and encourage families to learn the sport while spending time together. Bring your own soccer ball. All golf course rules must be observed and followed.

Tee TimesMonday anytimeTuesday and Thursday after 1pmWednesday anytimeFriday through Sunday after 2pmAdult Price: $1017 and under: $8Family of 4 or more: $25

Word on the Greenwith Wesley Allred, PGA Golf ProGrowing up in Staunton, I always looked forward to the fourth of July at Gypsy Hill Park, with the parade and the Statler Brothers. At about age 10, I decided to go with my dad to the golf course to see what this golf thing was about, and why he wanted to practice and play so much. After hitting a couple balls, and not very well, I was hooked. You see, my dad worked retail and there were many days he would work sunup to sundown and sometimes not getting home until after dark. Because he spent so much time at work, dedicated to providing for his family, the only time I could spend with him was either hitting golf balls or playing the short nine. My dad said to me “if you want to be good, you need to have a good foundation and good fundamentals, and you can only get that through lessons with a PGA Golf Professional.” Then my dad set up a lesson with N.L. Deaver who at the time was still giving lessons to children in the area. The only thing I can remember was I missed the ball 16 times and never hit it once– I was so nervous. After that, I started taking lessons from Ronnie Gerringer, and I remember hitting balls after school and playing till dark. To this day, I have met all of my best friends in life at Gypsy Hill Golf Course. My parents would drop us off there in the summer, where I would meet my friends and we would play, sometimes 54 holes, walking the course. It was a great time. Sometimes when I’m out playing a few holes, I remember those days and think how wonderful it was to have such a friendly golf course to frequent that encouraged youth to come and play. As a society, we need to get back to the time when evenings were meant for family, with no cell phones, no devices, and spend quality time with one another. That’s what I remember most about Gypsy Hill– the fact that it is friendly and family–oriented. We still love to see families and youth enjoy our historic golf course that is Gypsy Hill. We hope to see you this summer! Wes Allred, PGA. Lessons available by appointment. Rates are as follows: Individual Golf Lessons, by appointment only Adults: $40/hour Seniors: $30/hour Juniors: $20/hour

DID YOU KNOW? GOLF AND FOOTGOLF TRIVIA

First 18-Hole golf course was on a Sheep Farm.

Golf balls were originally made of wood..some golf balls were made of feathers.

If you choose to walk, rather than ride 18 holes, you will not only walk roughly four miles, but also burn 2,000 calories. To compare, golfers that ride carts burn about 1,300 calories.

Woodrow Wilson was such an avid golfer that he even played in the snow, using black golf balls.

The chances of making two holes-in-one in a round of golf are one in 67 million.

The longest golf putt ever is a monstrous 375 feet. The longest drive ever is 515 yards.

FootGolf has at least been around since June 2012, when the Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG) was founded, and might go back as far as 2008 in Spain.

The encouraged FootGolf outfit: golf attire with argyle-patterned socks and turf or indoor soccer shoes.

HEART: Healthy Environmental Afterschool Recreation TimeThe HEART afterschool program is a latchkey program that provides a home away from home to children of working parents. Concerns about safety and being home alone or under–supervised is a good reason to enroll your child in this program. We have little staff turnover from year to year giving us confidence that your child’s caregiver is both qualified and trustworthy. We have known each member of our child care staff for at least five years and they have extensive training and experience. They understand that parents want their children to be kept safe and feel acceptance and belonging. Most of our staff are parents and grandparents themselves, which can be very reassuring given staff maturity is the common denominator when establishing security and trust in a caregiver relationship. The HEART program has quite a tradition with its roots beginning 30 years ago with the first pilot program at McSwain Elementary School. We have since branched out to each elementary school in Staunton and have developed a credible and professional reputation. This year we are continuing with our enrichment to enhance what is already provided by the Staunton City Schools bookmobile activities, contracted creation artist Sandra Carter and our favorite animated storytellers Brenda and Diana from the Staunton Public Library.
