FALLING UPWARD

FALLING UPWARD A SPIRITUALITY FOR THE TWO HALVES OF LIFE

Led by the Rev. Dr. Ginny Smith

Tuesday evenings, October 16, 30, November 13, December 4 and 18 6:30 – 8:00 PM Fireside Room

Our conversations around growing spiritually and deepening our relationships with God will contin-ue throughout the Fall using Richard Rohr’s book, Fall-ing Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life to guide us on our journeys. Even if you have not been able to be with the group up to this point, please plan on being with us when we meet throughout the Fall months. The sharing has been enlightening! In my life and ministry, I have discovered, with the help of people like Richard Rohr, that in the first half of life, we are so preoccupied with establishing our identity – climbing, achieving, performing, being who and what others want us to be – that we lose the person God created us to be in the first place. Then we come to that point in our lives when we begin to real-ize that these concerns are not serving us as well as we had been led to believe they would, particularly when we are confronted by losses, challenges, mistakes, loss of control, broader hori-zons, and necessary suffering. We’re caught off guard and shocked out of our comfort zones. Unfortunately, we get stuck and don’t know how to deal with what is happening in our lives, let alone know how and where God is present in all that is going on. If this rings true for you, or if you’re intrigued by what “falling upward” is all

about, please join me in the Church’s Fireside Room on the Tuesday evenings noted

above. Perhaps you know someone who might also want to be a part of the conversa-

tion. Check with them and invite them to come along. We have people from various

churches joining us each time. Looking forward to seeing you.

Full of Gratitude You may notice as you walk by the bulletin board at the child care cen-ter entrance to the church that there are some gratitude trees decorating the board. When you enter the church, or as you pass by on your way back out in-to the world, please stop, grab a marker provided on the bulletin board, and write in one or two things that you are grateful for at that moment on the blank leaves. As we enter the season of thanksgiving, let’s create a board that is “full of gratitude.”

Christian Education Schedules Available Now If you are a nursery volunteer, teacher, youth group leader, or parent, all Christian Educa-tion schedules are available on-line as shared documents in Google Drive. You should all have received links relevant to your role and should be able to access those schedules whenever need be so that we all know who is doing what and when! If you have not been able to access the schedules, let Allison Ray know and she’ll rectify the situation. The CE registration forms for students are also available on Drive and individual files have been provided to all parents for completion. Please complete those at your earliest convenience so that we have all relevant con-tact and emergency information. Thank you!

Thank You! The CE Committee would like to extend appreciation to all of the nursery, Sunday school, and youth group volun-teers that answered the call for volunteers this year. We are particularly grateful to Sandy Manciocchi, Carol LaPointe-Knickerbocker, and Allison Staffa for their willingness to head up the classes for our K-4 graders. Our youngsters will have a very fun time with these three ladies throughout the year. If you see them around church on Sundays, make sure to thank them for their service in our church!

Annual Apple Pie Sale The MFPC youth will be holding their annual apple pie sale in October to raise funds in support of youth activities throughout the year. We will be visiting Navarino Orchard on September 30th to pick apples and will return to the church to assemble pies after service. Pies will be frozen and ready for pick up the next Sunday, October 7th. You can sign up to re-serve your pie(s) on the 30th during service—just note your name and the number of pies you would like on the pie sale sheet that is passed around on a clipboard. Or you can just pur-chase a pie on a whim on the 7th. We will have extras! Thank you for your continued support of this fundraising effort!

Fall Jewelry Sale! Benefitting Children of the Father’s House and the MFPC Youth Activity Fund

As you probably know, our church sponsors a little girl named Joan in Kampala, Uganda. She lives at Children of the Father’s House orphanage and is thriving with roughly 26 other youngsters and their caretakers. CFH is always finding innovative ways to support itself and to connect to the communi-ty in which CFH operates. One of their new fundraising initiatives involves working with local crafts-women in Kampala who make beautiful jewelry items. CFH has partnered with these women, contract-ing with them to produce handmade jewelry creations and establishing a business called Adorn With Love. The sale of these items provides income for these women, helping to break the cycle of poverty, and also supports the cost of care for children at CFH. It is a wonderful partnership and we at MFPC are excited to be a part of it. We have obtained a wide assortment of jewelry items from Adorn With Love and will be offering these items for sale this fall after services in Shinaman Hall. A display will be set up, with prices clearly marked. Your purchases will provide income for these talented craftswomen, sup-port the children at CFH, and provide a small contribution to the youth activity fund for the children at MFPC. In October, look for a display in Shinaman Hall and come prepared to support this special ef-fort—whether you find something beautiful for yourself or a gift for someone else as the holidays ap-proach, your purchases will make a real difference!

Holiday Helpers Beth Seeley has graciously agreed to coordinate our Advent Event in early December. Our CE committee would like to put the early call out to volunteers who would be willing to help her with the event. If you like being creative, or just want to lend Beth a helping hand, please be in touch with her directly or connect with her at church! Thank you!

Enchanted Beaver Lake All youth and parents are invited to join us for the Enchanted Beaver Lake walk on Friday, October 19th, at the Beaver Lake Nature Center in Baldwinsville. We were able to secure three parking passes for the event before it sold out, so we can bring as many people as will fit into three cars! If you plan to attend, please be in touch with Allison Ray and we will sort out carpooling for the evening. It starts at 6pm, so we will coordinate our travel plans around that. It is a lovely evening in the woods when we can walk beautiful jack’o’lantern-lined trails and appreciate a crisp fall evening in Central New York. Hope to see you all there!

SEEKING WISDOM BIBLE STUDY A Gathering for EVERYONE SEEKING to DEEPEN THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

And DISCOVER MORE About Being a JESUS FOLLOWER

October 13, 2018 - 10:00 - 11:30 AM - Fireside Room Led by Dr. Ginny Smith

Please join us Saturday, October 13, 2018, for another enthusiastic and enlightening discussion of

God’s Word and how it applies to and can be lived out in our lives today. Brian D. McLaren's book entitled We Make the Road by Walking is an excellent guide in help-

ing us dig deeper into what can often be unfamiliar territory. On September 8, we will be exploring chapter 12, “Stories That Shape Us,” exploring Second Kings 2:1-15; Psalm 23; and Acts 1:1-11; and chapter 13, “The Great Conversation,” exploring Isaiah 1:1-2:5, Romans 5:1-13, and Matthew 9:10-17.

Here is a teaser that will be a part of our discussion. “From Genesis to Job, the Bible is full of conversations like these – with differing viewpoints

making their case, point and counterpoint, statement and counterstatement. Sadly, throughout his-tory people have often quoted one side or the other to prove that their view alone is “biblical.” That’s why it’s important for us to remain humble as we read the Bible, not to seek ammunition for the side of an argument we already stand on, but to seek the wisdom that comes when we listen humbly to all the different voices arising in the biblical library.” Our next gathering times include November 10, and December 8; 2019 – January 12, February 9, March 9, April 13, May 11, and June 8. Hope to see you on October 13. PEOPLE OF ALL AGES ARE ENCOURAGED TO COME.
