From the President Dear PAOS Members and Friends,
I hope you were able to attend one of our two tours of Fairchild Gardens’ Million Orchid Project Laboratory this past month. You can enjoy the pictures we took at the first tour in this issue.
The Garden was very gracious with their time to share their exciting project with us. Please see the article in Miami Today copied in this month’s newsletter. Pan American is making a donation to the Fairchild Project in hopes of seeing orchids abound in our urban environment.
The annual business meeting was held and the following names were submitted for board positions:
More names may be nominated at the June Meeting and then the slate will be voted on. If you are interested in a position, or know someone who is, please nominate him or her. It is a fun way to be involved with your society.
Two conservation projects will be held this year, Pinecrest Gardens in the fall and next spring we will be helping Fairchild with their orchid project.
See you at the meetings!
Gail President

PAOS AT FAIRCHILD by Gio Lester
Some of us arrived alone. Others in group.
We were twelve all together. Amy joined us and helped
organize transportation for those who could not cover the
distance between the gift shop and the labs on foot.
What a way to start the day! A leisure walk at Fairchild
Tropical Botanic Gardens is a fantastic experience. The sounds,
sights, scents were all heightened by the morning sunlight.
Our first stop was at the educational pavilion where classes
are held for students and teachers alike.
Fairchild is a point of reference on botanical research and
teaching methodology. The spacious classrooms are equipped
with smartboards, and wi-fi connection. Lecture notes can be
easily uploaded to the cloud and shared beyond geographical
boundaries.
International classes are also held with
students here in the US attending lectures
being held in other countries, and vice
versa.
We also visited the labs. The first one is
where they are creating a macro-

PAOS AT FAIRCHILD cont’d photographic registry of plants in the Garden. Cameras attached
to microscopes (2nd picture on the pg. 3)
allow for extreme close-up photos of plant
structures to be taken.
The second, the Micropropagation
Laboratory, is where the flasks are
prepared, kept in temperature and light
controlled conditions, and color coded for
easy identification of their contents.
Seeds are placed in agar gum, and some of them are fed
banana powder (not all orchids respond well). The team also
develop plant specific fungi on petri dishes (above right), which
are used to help the orchids during the attachment phase.
We were lucky enough to have not only Amy and Jason, but
also Dr. Carl Lewis, head of the Million
Orchid Project, as well as a crew from
Miami Today taking pictures and
interviewing the three for an article
(published on our website for your delight).
The visit ended in the Butterfly Garden where we witnessed the
release of new residents.

This Month at PAOS Patsy West, is a fifth generation Native Floridian and former Presi-
dent of Eclectic Orchids Design. Ms. West will present a program on
Ecuadorian Orchids found in the Orchid and Cloud Forest of
Garupamba, located at 9,600 feet above sea level.
Views from the family lodge include the mountain ranges of Peru
and fantastic sunsets. She will discuss the orchids of the preserve, the
orchid gardens, as well as the release of native orchids to a natural
environment at the mountaintop property of noted orchid collector,
Alfonso Pozo. Mr. Pozo is reestablishing his lifelong collection of Ecuadorian species to
its natural habitat.
Ms. West will also give a short travelogue of the cities of Guayaquil and Cuenca.
Patsy is a noted ethnohistorian and author in the field of Seminole and Miccosukee
Indians. She created the Seminole/Miccosukee Photographic Archive in 1972 which
contains over 10,000 images from 1852 through Present. A long time consultant for the
Seminole Tribe of Florida, she taught Seminole History for the Tribal Chairman's Office
and was the Guest Curator of the exhibition "Osceola" (January 2008) at the Seminole
Tribal Museum.
We are sure Patsy’s presentation will
brighten the meeting.

AOS CORNER As the newly appointed Chair of the AOS Affiliated Societies committee, I am also, like
all of you, the AOS representative for my society. I so enjoyed getting Lynn Fuller’s
emails of the AOS Corner in the past that I would like to continue that tradition. LN
From the desk of Laura Newton, Affiliated Society Chair
The Spring AOS Members’ Meeting in Minnesota was a huge success! Our sincere thanks
go out to the members of the Orchid Society of Minnesota for hosting this event. Speaking
of Members’ Meetings, we are thrilled to announce that our Fall Meeting “Orchid Spooktac-
ular” will be held in the Orlando area, October 29th - November 2nd. Our official hotel is the
Sheraton Orlando North. Make plans now to join us in Florida! Something is brewing…come
and be a part of it!
There is more exciting news! The fee for a digital membership has been reduced to $40
per year; a savings of $25. Please encourage your members to take advantage of this new
membership level!
Have you been participating in our webinars? We are hosting webinars on various topics
each month. This month it will be on Orchids Plus, our new and innovative award program
that has both an online and offline version for searching through all AOS awards. Ever won-
dered what a really good awardable flower looks like? Now is your chance to see the pro-
gram in action. This webinar is open to both members and non-members, so spread the
word!
The most important advice that I can give all of you is to be enthusiastic about your pas-
sion for growing orchids. Let your society members know all of the wonderful things that you
gain from being a member of the American Orchid Society! As an AOS representative I give
a 5-10 minute talk at our monthly meetings on at least one significant piece of information
from the website and one article that I particularly enjoyed from our magazine.
If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, on how to help build your society
with the AOS please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Lastly, we are always looking for motivated people with great ideas to join our commit-
tee, so if this interests you, come and help us grow the AOS.
Growing our membership, one Orchid lover at a time,
Laura Newton [email protected]
