ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL
Jerusalem is featured in the travel account of Luke’s Gospel, from which today’s Gospel (Luke 10:1-2, 17-20) has been selected. Jesus was headed to that Holy City in order to become himself the source of consolation and salvation for all peoples. While en route, Jesus healed the sick, forgave sin, cast out demons and challenged his followers to accept the often harsh demands of discipleship. Today’s gospel offers valuable lessons in discipleship and what it meant to participate in Jesus’ mission. Jesus’ instruction about how the disciples should travel and conduct themselves underscored the supreme value of the kingdom. Their devotion to their mission would preclude any preoccupation with material things, social amenities, food, etc. Jesus’ instruction to “eat what is set before you” indicated that the former dietary regulations were obsolete and every food was considered acceptable. When failure came their way the disciples were not to be deterred from their important task. Rather, they were to shake the dust from their feet and take the message of salvation to the next town, leaving it to God to judge those who rejected them. Upon their return, they recounted their efforts to Jesus. His remark about Satan falling from the sky signaled the eclipse of the power of evil by the merging kingdom of justice, right and truth. Serpents and scorpions appeared frequently in the scriptures as symbols of moral evil. As his emissaries, the disciples would share in Jesus’ power over evil during his ministry and during the continued ministry of the church after his resurrection. To channel their enthusiasm, Jesus reminded his disciples then, as well as all subsequent disciples, that theirs was/is a mission not of sensationalism but of salvation. Headlines may bring fleeting fame for those who capitalize on ostentatious methods and dramatic delivery. But those whose names would be written in heaven are called to a simple, humble, day-by-day, person-to-person commitment to the process of converting and transforming the world. Just as Jesus’ mission flowed from his relationship with his Father, so would the disciples’ mission flow from the same intimacy they shared with Jesus. Only this knowledge will keep us strong and courageous so as to face whatever lies ahead. Present-day disciples ought to take comfort in the words of a prayer written by the late Bishop Ken Untener, former Bishop of Saginaw, MI: “We are workers, not master builders; minis-ters, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own.”
We are asked to remember in our prayers: Janine Hoffman, Anne Shea, Lori Lesutis,
Carol Luty, William O’Donnell, Fran Ward, Michael and Andrew McCaughey,
Bill and Ella Denny, and all who care for those who are sick and dying.
Please call the Parish Office at 610-525-0147 if you would like to request yourself or a family member be put on our prayer list for the next 4 weeks. You can also make a request that the prayers of the community be renewed for another 4-week period as often as needed or desired.

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK (IHN)
Thank you to all who have volunteered your time, energy and hospitality to the families who will be joining us today, July 7, here in the parish for the week. We ask your prayers for the families in particular, but also that their time with us will be a safe, healthy and profitable one for these families who are temporarily without homes.
Important IHN Phone Numbers: Because of our phone system here in the parish, it is important that you know the numbers to call if you are trying to reach someone helping with the IHN families during the week of July 7 – 14. These numbers will be necessary to have whenever the Parish Office is closed or after 5:00 p.m. on work days this week.
Parish Phone – 610-525-0147 – Ext. 255 (Social Center – school)
IHN Direct Line – 610-525-1727
AUGUSTINIAN VOLUNTEERS
The Augustinian Volunteers, recent college grads between the ages of 21 – 29 who feel called to spend a year in service to others while living in an intentional community, are still seeking volunteers for their Lawrence, MA, Ventura, CA and Peru communities. Volunteers serve with local community partners in social service, campus ministry, and education placements. By engaging in a way of life inspired by the Augustinian Friars, volunteers experience personal and spiritual development as they build relationships with fellow volunteers and those they serve. Over the years, there have been several members of Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish who have participated in the program! If interested, please visit www.augustinianvounteers.org or contact us at [email protected].
STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE for JUNE 30, 2019
“The harvest is rich,” Jesus tells the seventy-two in today’s Gospel, “But the workers are few.” The situation is the same today. How can I help with God’s harvest? Am I called into the field? Am I one who could provide food or shelter or wages to those who toil in the fields of the Lord? Due to the early publishing submission, the stewardship totals for June 30th will appear in next week’s bulletin. Thank you for your Stewardship to your Parish.
Please remember the Church in your will.

SUMMER FILM SERIES #2 Tuesday, July 23 (new date)
Gospel Without Borders
The focus of the 2nd film of the OMGC summer Film Series is the Catholic social teaching, Solidarity, and its bearing on immigration reform. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops tells us that: “We are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, wherever they may be…At the core of the virtue of solidarity is the pursuit of peace and justice.”
Gospel without Borders, a documentary, produced by the Baptist Center for Ethics, follows the plight of immigrants in five states and the interdenominational help provided to these immigrants by people who believe in the Gospel. In 2011, Bishop Anthony Taylor of the Diocese of Little Rock, Arkansas, urged Catholic leaders to distribute this documentary to their parishes. He wrote, “Immigration reform is one area where we can learn to work together in a united way to build bridges of shared humanity and Christian faith in line with Vatican II’s vision of the demands of the Gospel today.”
Please join us in the School Gym on Tuesday, July 23 from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Time for a short reflection and discussion will follow.

NEED FOR
H.O.P.E. GROUP LEADERS
Several of our Group Leaders for HOPE (Helping Other People in Emergency) have had to resign from this ministry for various reasons. A group leader for HOPE is an adult woman or man who is home often enough that you are able to receive phone calls from parishioners who need a ride to the doctor’s office, hospital or shopping. You then call a driver on your list of drivers to see if he/she is able to meet this request. Group leaders (two assigned each week) can be non-drivers because you will not be asked to do the driving. Your task, one week out of three, will be to make the connection between the volunteer driver and the person in need of a local ride. If you would like more information about this particular ministry, please call Sr. Anne at 610-525-0147 (ext. 234). Thank you for considering this parish need.
H.O.P.E.
DRIVERS NEEDED
We would ask you to consider offering your driving skills for parishioners who need a ride to local doctors’ offices, shopping, etc. Your
group would be assigned every third week. The group leader will contact you if she receives a request for transportation. If you are available, a “yes” always makes a group leader very grateful. But if you are not available at the day or time needed, your group leader will also be grateful that you returned her call, telling her that it is not a good time for you. If you need to talk about this commitment, please call Sr. Anne at 610-525-0147 (ext. 234).
