Jesus speaks of his Passion and rebukes Peter for his objection.

Today’s Gospel continues the story that began in last week’s Gospel. Simon Peter was called the “rock” upon which Jesus would build his Church, and yet Peter continues to show the limitations of his understanding of Jesus’ identity. Now that the disciples have acknowledged that Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus confides in them the outcome of his ministry: he must suffer and die in Jerusalem to be raised on the third day. Peter rejects this prediction, and Jesus rebukes him severely, calling him “Satan.” In opposing this aspect of Jesus’ mission, Peter shows that he is no longer speaking based on the revelation from God but as a human being. Jesus then teaches all of the disciples about the difficult path of discipleship: to be Christ’s disciple is to follow in his way of the cross. Peter could not yet understand what it meant to call Jesus the Messiah. It is unlikely that the other disciples understood any better. Messianic expectations were a common aspect of first-century Judaism. Under Roman occupation, many in Israel hoped and prayed that God would send a Messiah to free the Jews from Roman oppression. The common view was that the Messiah would be a political figure, a king that would free Israel from Roman rule. This is perhaps what Peter envisioned when he was led to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. In this passage, however, Jesus is beginning to teach his disciples that he would be the Messiah in a different way. Jesus would be more like the suffering servant described by the prophet Isaiah than the political liberator. Those who would be Jesus' disciples would be called to a similar life of service. Perhaps this is what Peter feared most in Jesus’ prediction of his Passion. He whom Jesus had called “rock” would also be called upon to offer himself in sacrifice and service to others. Christian leaders today are still called to sacrifice and serve others as Jesus did.

NEW MASS SCHEDULE

Dear Friends,

I am happy to see that more people feel comfortable coming to Mass. Last week we had more people at Mass than at any time since we began in-person worship. We plan to go back to having three morning Masses on Sunday, just as we did before the pandemic started. Those Masses will be 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, and 11:15 AM, beginning Sunday, September 6, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

Please note that although these Mass times are the same as before the pandemic, they may not be permanent. We still might have to make adjustments as time goes on, and our situation changes. For a while, we will have to be flexible.

Starting the day after Labor Day, we will resume our 6:30 AM Masses. Please note that the 7:30 AM Mass will continue at 7:30 and will not return to the 8 AM time slot - at least not now. This daily Mass schedule, like that of Sunday, also may not be permanent. We may have to change it later on in the fall. We will continue to live stream the 7:30 AM Mass, the 5:00 PM Saturday Vigil Mass, and the 9:30 AM Sunday morning Mass.

Many of the people who frequented the 6:30 AM Mass were members of other parishes. We never thought to collect their names, phone numbers, and email addresses. Those of you who frequented the 6:30 AM Mass, if you can contact any of those non-parishioners who used to come to the 630, please inform them about the resumption of that Mass.

When we come together being away for so long, it fills us with great joy to see old friends after months of not seeing them. The temptation is to greet each other and hold a conversation, to get caught up on how our friends are doing.

I don't want to be a stick in the mud, but I'm just a bit worried about maintaining social distancing and trying to keep all of our community members safe. There's also the matter of holding up the work of our dedicated volunteers who after each Mass sanitize the pews and other things at all of us touch.

For that reason, I'm requesting that you please leave the church promptly after Mass, and if you wish to share the joy of a reunion, please do it outside of the church or in the parking lot, observing safe distancing. I would hate for one of our Masses to become an occasion for parishioners to catch the virus.

I've mentioned before that our staff prepares the Social Center as an overflow room, equipped with safely distanced chairs and our large TV where we can live-stream the Mass. One of the priests will bring over Holy Communion at the appropriate time. We have not done so yet, but if our attendance numbers continue to climb, we may have to. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation if you are asked by one of the greeters to proceed to the Social Center.

Finally, I thank all of you who have continued to support our parish financially during this difficult time. Unlike many other parishes, the parishioners of OMGC continue to contribute at a level comparable with before the pandemic. Other pastors - both Catholic and Protestant - have been amazed when they ask me about parish giving here at OMGC during this strange era.

Thank you for your generosity and sacrifice!

I continue to pray for you all at least twice a day. Please pray for Fr. John and me and all your fellow-parishioners.

Christ's peace, Father Liam

BRIDGE UPDATE

The replacement of the Pennswood Bridge Project is moving along on schedule at this time. Except for the major inconvenience of the detour and some landscaping changes, the work has not yet affected our property a great deal. That will be changing shortly. Due to the use of heavy equipment on Pennswood Road in front of our buildings, we will have a temporary walkway installed parallel to our sidewalk. The first part of the walkway will start near our entrance of the parking lot across from the Acme, through the yard of the parish office and the rectory, until it turns right and enters the church courtyard at the porte-cochère. The second part of the walkway will be in front of the church and will be installed at a later date. The walkways will have a privacy fence placed on the street side to protect our pedestrians. We thank you for your patience during this time. If you have any questions, please contact Joe Carey at [email protected] or 610-525-0147 ext 262.

HOLY COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND

We know that some of our parish community members do not feel comfortable coming to Mass but would like to receive Holy Communion. The Archdiocese encourages priests to continue to bring Holy Communion to those who are homebound because of age and/or health issues. If you or a family member want a visit from one of the priests, please call the parish office.

IHN

The Interfaith Hospitality Network is hosting an on-line fundraising event on Sunday, September 13 from 6 PM to 7:30 PM. This is a family friendly event with entertainment and an on-line auction! For more information on this fun event and to help this worthy cause, go to www.ihncares.org and scroll down to the Hope for Homes Information!

PREP [Parish Religious Education Program]

Our Mother of Good Counsel PREP program will be held virtually this year. If your child is in need of Sacraments or is behind in their Religious Education, this is a great year to get back on track! For more information on the program, please contact Karen Carey at 610-525-0147 or [email protected]

CATECHISTS NEEDED!

Our PREP program needs a few more catechists to help bring the Word of God to our young people. If you feel you may be interested, please contact Karen at 610-525-0147 or 610-864-8538 or [email protected]. There is no special training needed. The ministry involves some lesson prep time (the program provides all the materials), and a willingness to share your love of Jesus with our young people. This year, the program will be all virtual and your materials are provided. Please pray on this and call if you are interested.

FOOD NEEDED

The Patrician Society of Norristown, whom we assist on a regular basis with food donations, has made a special request.

During this Covid-19 time, they are assisting more families than usual with food for their families. They have asked us specifically for donations of canned meat, (canned chicken, beef stew, canned chicken), beans, (black, red, pinto, garbanzo), and canned pasta (SpaghettiOs’s, ravioli, spaghetti, and meatballs). If you can help us out by donating a can or two, please bring your donations to the church and leave them in the basket near the entrance.

Thank you, Karen

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

Traditionally the First Friday of the month has been a special time of prayer to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. It has been suggested that we might have the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament here at Our Mother of Good Counsel during this time of the coronavirus pandemic. Many people are uncomfortable coming to church for Mass at this time, but they might feel safer coming for a brief visit in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.

Please join us from 12-2pm on September 4th.

FAITH SHARING ZOOM MEETING

The Faith Sharing meeting begins on Tuesday, September 1st at 1:00 pm on Zoom. These groups will be led by Fr. John Deary. All are welcome! The meeting ID is 818 142 6651.

AUGUSTINIAN LAITY GROUP MEETING ON ZOOM

The Augustinian Laity Group will take place on the first and third Tuesdays of every month, September 1 & 15, from 7-8 pm on Zoom. The groups are run by Fr. John Deary.

The meeting ID is 818 142 6651

Fr. Joseph A. Loya, O.S.A.

Fr. Joe succeeds Fr. Paul as the newest member of the friary community here at OMGC.

Fr. Joe hails from Cleveland, Ohio. After entering the Augustinian formation program in 1972, he professed simple vows in 1974 and solemn vows in 1978. After obtaining a Master of Theology Degree from the Washington Theological Coalition in 1978, he was soon ordained and placed on the faculty of the Theology and Religious Studies Department at Villanova U. After obtaining in 1986 a Doctoral Degree in the History of Christianity (Fordham U.), Fr. Joe received tenure, then promotion to Associate Professor in 1992 and 1996, respectively. Five years ago, he was appointed Director of Villanova’s Russian Area Studies Program, and was accorded a dual appointment to the Global Interdisciplinary Studies Department. He presently continues his administrative and teaching assignments at the University.

Fr. Joe is rather unique among the O.S.A.s in being a baptized, confirmed and ordained Eastern Catholic priest-friar (Byzantine Ruthenian Rite); he continues to minister in the Eastern Catholic Eparchy (Diocese) of Passaic, N.J.

Can We Provide Refugee from Darfur with a Car?

About two years ago, Ardmore Presbyterian Church welcomed Ismail, now in his 30’s, to the house in Ardmore, First Place, in which they shelter refugees. A member of the Fur tribe in Sudan, the pre-adolescent Ismail was forced to watch as the cruel Janjaweed militia raided his farm in 2003 and murdered his father right before his eyes. The farm was then destroyed. After many years in a refugee camp, Ismail was admitted to the United States. Sheltered in Ardmore, then on his own in Philadelphia, he learned how to drive and obtained his license and a car. His car allowed him to take a job at Amazon in New Jersey. Though that car, a 2010 Honda Accord, is not fully paid for, it is now a total loss. As Ismail was returning from work, another driver ignored a stop sign or red light, and crossed over in front of Ismail’s car as it was passing through the intersection. The side of the offending car was bashed in, but it was still drivable, and the driver, in order to escape liability for the accident, possibly because he was uninsured, quickly drove off without identifying himself to the dizzy Ismail. The front of Ismail’s car was smashed in so badly that it is not worth repairing. In order to keep his job and his wage-earning ability, and to finish paying off the price for his wrecked car, can we find a car for Ismail? The donation of a used car, or funds for one, would be counted as a donation to the Ardmore Presbyterian Church. Selling a car cheaply to us, his sponsors, would also help. In thankfulness for your kindness to him, it is our belief that Ismail would be happy to give you lessons on how to ride a camel. If you can make a helpful response to this request, please contact Joe Betz ([email protected], H 610-525-4499), or you can send checks to Ardmore Presbyterian Church, 5 W. Montgomery Ave., Ardmore, PA 19003. Please put “To First Place for car for Ismail” on the memo line. The church will provide a receipt for the gift of the car or money.
