Peter, the Rock You have to love Peter. At times he just doesn’t get Jesus at all and yet at other times he really does. Today’s Gospel tells one of the times he really does.

He proclaims that Jesus is “the Christ, the son of the living God”. Spoiler alert: next week’s Gospel gives an example of when he doesn’t understand at all!

Maybe that is why I love Peter so much. He was not the most educated or intelligent person. He was not worldly. He was not upper-class or highly thought of in his society. In fact, just the opposite was true. What did Jesus see in him? Why would Jesus choose him to be the rock of his church?

Jesus could see Peter’s heart. He could tell what a loyal, faithful person he was. Peter was not perfect. Peter often spoke before he thought. Peter even denied Christ. Peter also knew he could ask for forgiveness and be truly forgiven. Peter truly believed that Jesus was the messiah, the one sent by God to save all God’s people. How did he go from being a lowly fisherman to being a fisher of men and the head of Christ’s church? He had a personal relationship with Jesus.

A personal relationship with Jesus is necessary for me too. Just knowing about Jesus is not enough. I have to really know Jesus as Peter did and let Jesus really know me. Of course God created me and knows all about me, but do I open myself up to letting God into my life? Jesus invited Peter to follow him and he left everything and followed him. When God invites me to follow, do I do so immediately and without hesitation as Peter did? Now granted it was Jesus physically calling Peter, but he did not even know who Jesus was.

First I want to be sure it is really God inviting me. How do I find out? I go to God in prayer. I talk to God and ask. Receiving the Eucharist also helps me strengthen my personal relationship. What better way to know Jesus than to invite him into my very heart?

Peter gives me hope. Even when I get it wrong, like Peter, I know that I can go to God and be forgiven. I can try again. Jesus is always there for me and with me, calling me and inviting me to follow. I want to be like Peter, the Rock!

Pedro, la Roca Tienes que amar a Pedro. A veces no le entendía para nada a Jesús pero a veces realmente le entendía. El evangelio de hoy le cuenta a uno de las veces que si entendió. Él proclama que Jesús es “Cristo, el hijo de Dios”. ¡Advertencia: el próximo evangelio da un ejemplo de cuando no le entiende para nada!

A lo mejor por eso es que amo tanto a Pedro. No era la persona más educada o inteligente. No era mundano. No era de clase alta o muy considerada en la sociedad. De hecho, lo opuesto es verdad. ¿Qué vio Jesús en él? ¿Porque escogería Jesús a él para ser la roca de su iglesia?

Jesús podía ver el corazón de Pedro. Podía ver la persona leal y de fe que era. Pedro no era perfecto. Pedro muchas veces hablaba sin pensar. Pedro hasta renunció a Cristo. Pedro sabía también que podía pedir perdón y ser verdaderamente perdonado. Pedro creía que Jesús era el Mesías, mandado por Dios a salvar a toda la gente de Dios. ¿Cómo pasó de ser un pescador humilde a ser un pescador de hombres y la cabeza de la iglesia de Cristo? Él tuvo una relación personal con Jesús.

Una relación personal con Jesús es necesaria para mí también. Solo saber de Jesús no es suficiente. Tengo que realmente conocer a Jesús como Pedro y dejar que Jesús realmente me conozca a mí. Claro que Dios me creó y sabe todo de mí, pero me abro a mí misma a dejar a Dios entrar a mi vida? Jesús invitó a Pedro a seguirlo y él dejó todo y lo siguió. Cuando ¿Dios me invita a seguirlo, lo hago inmediatamente y sin dudarlo como Pedro? Ahora seguro que Jesús estaba llamando físicamente a Pedro, pero él ni sabía quién era Jesús.

Primero quiero estar segura que en verdad es Dios quien me invita. ¿Como me doy cuenta? Voy a Dios en oración. Le hablo a Dios y pregunto. Recibiendo la Eucaristía también me ayuda a fortalecer mi relación personal. ¿Qué mejor manera de conocer a Jesús que invitarlo a mi propio corazón?

Pedro me da esperanza. Hasta cuando me equivoco, como Pedro, sé que puedo ir a Dios y ser perdonada. Puedo intentar otra vez. Jesús siempre está ahí por mí y siempre está conmigo, llamando e invitándome a seguirlo. Quiero ser como Pedro la Roca!

NOT HIRED, BUT CHOSEN When a company recruits top management the process is detailed and thorough. No company wants less than the best. Contrast this with today’s Gospel. Jesus asks his disciples who they say he is. Peter exclaims, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). Peter is a good Jew, but an illiterate fisherman, not exactly high on the social ladder. Nevertheless, Jesus saw what this man could become. “You are Peter, and upon this rock [in Greek, petros] I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). The future of our Church, now 1.5 billion people worldwide, lay in Peter’s hands. With the power of God, Jesus promised that ultimate evil would never defeat it. Nevertheless, the Church is made up of flawed human beings who sometimes fail. Even Peter himself, Jesus’ chosen “rock,” failed spectacularly by denying Christ three times. Let’s not walk away from failure but strive more to live a faithful Christian life.

Pon esto en contraste con el Evangelio de hoy. Jesús le pregunta a los discípulos quién dicen ellos que es él. Pedro exclama: “Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo del Dios vivo” (Mateo 16:16). Pedro es un buen judío, pero es también un pescador analfabeta; no muy distinguido en las esferas sociales. No obstante, Jesús vio lo que este hombre podía llegar a ser. “Tú eres Pedro y sobre esta piedra [petros en griego] edificaré mi Iglesia” (Mateo 16:18). El futuro de nuestra Iglesia, actualmente con 1.5 billones de personas en todo el mundo, empezó en las manos de Pedro. Con el poder de Dios, Jesús prometió que el mal nunca vencería a su Iglesia. Con todo y eso, la Iglesia está compuesta de seres humanos imperfectos que a veces fallan. Aun el mismo Pedro, escogido por Jesús como “la roca”, falló espectacularmente cuando negó a su Maestro tres veces. No nos alejemos de Dios cuando fallemos, sino esforcémonos aún más para vivir fielmente nuestra vida cristiana.
