rincipal Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
Friday 11 September
Last Friday we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. It was a wonderful opportunity for the entire College community – students, staff, parents and friends - to come together and celebrate our shared OLSH spirit and identity. From the introduction to our Mass:
‘The Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is really a celebration of love. Mary was the one who nurtured and formed Jesus from a little child, she was the one who really knew him and knew his
heart. As a school community, we call her and honour her as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.’ Our Mass saw us pray for the students and staff in the ‘School of Joy’ as well as the women, children and men of Syria. We blessed the new staff members who have joined us since the beginning of the year, we listened to Feast Day greetings from the OLSH Colleges in Enfield and Kensington and we also had a special Feast Day message prepared for us by the OLSH Sisters. We sang hymns and danced in the Gospel. We prayed aloud and in silence. All in all, it was a beautiful start to a wonderful Feast Day. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, pray for us.

Summer Uniform Parents are asked to ensure that the length of the summer dress is checked prior to the beginning of Term 4. Wearing of the College PE Uniform There have been an increasing number of students who have been wearing their PE uniform instead of their winter uniform. Parents are to note that the PE uniform can only be worn to and from school on days where students have a scheduled Dance/PE class. Wearing of the PE uniform outside the scheduled class time is not permitted. Should there be a variance in this parents will be notified. For training and tryouts students will be required to change into their PE uniform at school. Parents must make contact with their daughter’s homeroom teacher in the event that this is not possible.

Wakakirri: The Cradle of Hope 2015 Staging Award
2015 Choreography Award
2015 Best Original Story Award
The Wakakirri journey commenced in March with a group of Year 11 students meeting to create a concept that became the ‘The Cradle of Hope’. After months of rehearsals and more meetings, the students performed at Frankston Arts Centre. The students, supported by staff members, united by hope, enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence, danced and sung their way into the finals. The day of finals dawned brightly and busloads of excited ‘Wakakirrians’ headed to Hamer Hall. Once there a flurry of activities followed, where girls rehearsed, changed into costumes and hair and makeup were completed.
During this time, members of the ABC television crew visited to film the preparations and to interview various students. The energy in the room was electric as the girls waited their call to the stage. The performance that followed was sensational! Awards were won and they included: Best Original Story, Best Choreography and Best Staging. OLSH students shared the honour of being state finalists with two other schools. The national results come out on the 14 October.
OLSH is also in the running for the people’s choice awards and you can go online to the Waka TV website to vote (http://www.wakakirri.com/mainsite/category/peoples-choice-secondary/). The more votes OLSH receive the greater chance we have of winning that award – so spread the word please.
Congratulations to the students on stage and behind stage. A special congratulations and commendation to the students in the creative team, especially the choreographers for all their hard work. The Wakakirri performance showed that OLSH girls are heart people and truly can do anything.

OLSHLinks Last week we were fortunate enough to take part in the OLSHLinks trip at OLSH Enfield. This program provides links between the OLSH Colleges from Bentleigh, Kensington Sydney and Enfield Adelaide. We flew to Adelaide on Wednesday 9 September meeting the OLSH Kensington girls when we landed. We then went home with our host families who were all extremely kind and welcoming. On Thursday, we went to school with our host sisters attending their classes and meeting their friends. After that, each of the families had something planned out for us. On Friday we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Their Feast Day was celebrated differently. We had Mass at a local church which included a special blessing
for babies in the community. This was followed by a sausage sizzle in the park. In the afternoon we joined our host sisters for a visit to the Adelaide Show where we had to complete a challenge. This involved taking a photo of us doing something to represent their 24 OLSH characteristics. We had fun being creative with our photos and thoroughly enjoyed the show. On Saturday, we went to the Church in Kilburn which was where the OLSH sisters started out in Adelaide. Sr Pat talked about some of the programs that have been set up for the refugees who live in the area. This included a large community garden. We also went to the old convent which is now a Hare Krishna centre. They explained to us some of their customs and how they originated. We travelled to Rundle Mall for a lunch break before catching a tram to Glenelg where we spent time with our host sisters, enjoying the sunshine. At the end of the day we all shared a pizza meal before heading off for our last night with our host families. On Sunday morning we had to say our farewells sadly parting from each other but made sure that we would all stay in contact. Throughout the week, we had visited some of Adelaide's main attractions and more importantly we had made some remarkable memories with each other and our host families.
Ms Bernadette Anderson Director of School Operations
Doris: My host sister Nicole, was such a lovely person and her family was very welcoming and made me feel at home. Even though the trip was only four days, Nicole and I grew so close we were sisters by the first hour. It was such a fantastic learning experience and a great way to bond with the girls from not only Enfield but Kensington as well. The highlight of my trip was going to Glenelg beach where a couple of the girls and I sat and had a long chat about the experience and got to know each other. Maria: The Mezak family was my host family, they were all very welcoming and kind. On Thursday, I went with my host sister Grace and her parents to Arthur’s (her twin brother) school concert, which I very much enjoyed. The highlight of my experience was definitely the Adelaide show as were all together, we went on so many thrilling rides and ended the night with fireworks and laughter. I am honestly so privileged to have gone on such an experience and have stayed with such a kind family. Not only that but I also made friendships and links with the other OLSH schools which helped me better connect as an OLSH student with the OLSH trio. Chloe: My host sister was Matilda. Throughout the whole OLSH Links experience Matilda was so welcoming and opened not only her home to me, but also invited me to places with her friends and included me in her schooling. It wasn’t just the Adelaide girls I created a close bond with, it was also the Kensington girls. No matter where we were last week, we were always laughing and having fun. Memories were always being made and our bonds were always growing stronger. I’m so glad that I went on this trip as I made lifelong friends that I hope to keep in contact with. We would like to thank all of the teachers involved in making this opportunity possible and enabling us to build strong bonds with other OLSH students and learning more about each school. We would like to especially thank Ms Anderson and Ms Graffeo, who were the teachers with us on this trip, for taking care of us and always ensuring that we were alright. We would definitely recommend this experience to all the future Year 10s as it is a very memorable one, one which will definitely be a highlight of the year. Doris Tran, Maria Farag and Chloe Hopson

SCSA Volleyball
Congratulations to Senior A - Premiers! The SCSA Volleyball tournament was held on Friday 28 August at MSAC in Albert Park. Despite the clash with Wakakirri, OLSH was able to field six strong teams. This year OLSH entered two teams into the Senior Division. All the girls played their best and worked well as a team, and in the end the Senior A Team finished on top, winning the Grand Final against Avila. We were also fortunate enough for one of our players to win ‘Best Player’ during our Grand Final. Congratulations to Jess Vo! A big thank you to our Coach Jessica Finlay for keeping us motivated and giving us helpful tips and tricks throughout the day. To Ms Petering, although she was unable to be there on the day, thanks for getting us all organised and putting in the hard yards. Kaitlyn White, Year 11
Congratulations to Junior A – Runners Up! The Intermediate team, coached by Alana King, played competitively all day. Their training and after school competitive experience enabled both teams to make the semi finals. Thanks to Mr Phil Carmody who developed the skills of all of the junior players in the weeks prior. Both teams improved their team play and strategies throughout the tournament, which resulted in the Junior A team achieving a place in the Grand Final. Although the team lost to Clonard, Shingirai Hazel Madebwe won ‘Player of the Match’ in the Grand Final.
