As this year begins, we step out in faith walking in the footsteps of Jesus and placing ourselves under the guidance and protection of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.   Entrusting ourselves and the year ahead to God, the staff had several opportunities to come together for prayer, reflection and for the sharing of Eucharist before the girls’ return to school.   We welcomed Father Paul Gurry as our celebrant for our Opening Staff Mass and then, on Wednesday Father Paul returned to lead the College community in celebrating our Opening College Mass for 2014. During the mass, our new Year 7 students were anointed by their Year 12 ‘big sisters’ as were all other new students and staff. To anoint another is to welcome, bless and commission them and so, this was a most special part of our mass.

As we look ahead over these next two weeks, there are a number of upcoming events you may be interested to know about:

Caritas  ‘Just Leadership Day’ (Monday Feb 10) being hosted here at the College for student  leaders of Justice and

Peace and Faith and Mission. We will welcome representatives from Presentation College Windsor and Kilbreda College

to join us for this day.

World Day of Justice (Thursday February 20).

Year 12 Retreat (February 19‐21) at Rutherford Park. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Year 12s to move into the

countryside and spend some time apart with their God and with each other. Please keep all our Year 12 girls and the staff

who will accompany them in your thoughts and prayers over these days.

History, Heritage and Heart programme for new staff (February 21). This is an opportunity for staff new to the three

OLSH Colleges to come together for a day as they begin to be immersed in the story and spirituality of our OLSH tradition.

A highlight of the day is always meeting some of the OLSH Sisters and hearing their stories of mission and ministry over

many years.

Anniversary of the death of Marie Louise Hartzer (February 21).

Our 2014 launch of Vinnies (St. Vincent De Paul) through homerooms. Just a reminder that involvement in Vinnies is

open to all students in Years 10 ‐12. I take this opportunity to invite all our parents to consider whether you might like to

be part of our involvement. If so, please contact us.

I look forward to working with your daughters as we work towards making Jesus’ love known to the ends of the earth. I speak on behalf of the Sisters when I say please be assured of our on‐going prayers for you and yours throughout this year.

Staff Professional Learning

2014 at OLSH has begun very well with students and staff full of enthusiasm and energy for all that a new year has to offer.   Prior to the commencement of the school year, teaching staff spent considerable time involved in a flexible professional learning program. All staff were required to complete an online certificate in anaphylaxis training, as well as an update in CPR.   At the curriculum level, the focus of this professional learning was to reconnect with or  continue with  developing  the  OLSH  Curriculum  using  some  of  the  concepts and/or tools introduced during the last 2 ‐ 3 years. Some of these areas included: Visible  Learning  (especially  moving  towards  including  Formative  Assessment), Backward  Design  Curriculum  Planning,  Australian  Curriculum,  Use  of  Data, Differentiation, Flipped Classroom, Edmodo, OneNote, Schoology or other areas of interest.   During  the next  few weeks,  a  couple  of  the Wednesday  afternoon professional learning sessions will be dedicated to each staff member providing an  interactive presentation demonstrating one useful tool for either curriculum development or use  in the classroom. This will give all staff the opportunity to share with and to learn from each other.

OLSH mentioned in Parliament!

Elizabeth Miller MP, State Member for Bentleigh, recently addressed the Parliament and spoke about our College and Regnet Christus Day.

A copy from the Hansard extract 28 November 2013:

Last Thursday I was kindly invited to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College in Bentleigh to celebrate Regnet Christus Day. ‘Regnet Christus’ is the motto of the school, meaning ‘May Christ reign’. The school really embodies this statement in its ethos and delivery of education. I was proud to have attended the ceremony of excellence celebrations on this day and present a ‘Women in Leadership Encouragement’ Award to Miss Martha O’Hagan. I congratulate her on demonstrating strong leadership qualities that will put her in good stead for her very bright future. This year the college is celebrating 75 years of educating young women, and I commend it on this feat. The College would like to thank Ms Miller for the donation of this award and her encouragement of the young women in our College.

Throughout the first day of school I had the opportunity to witness many examples of why it is great to have our girls back and

why OLSH is the place to Be!   To Gillian Lantouris and Lauren Caia who saw Mrs Bertschik struggling with her books as she moved up the stairs and offered to carry them for her;  To Reni Maddaford who saw a Year 10 student lost and offered to show her to her classroom;  To our College Leaders, Leanne Haidar, Kim Koelmeyer, Rachel Pinto and Jasmina Lieu for the way they welcomed each of our Year 7s and their parents on their first day at OLSH;  To Charlotte Yanko for the way that she welcomed and warmly greeted one of our new students on her first day at the College. I’m sure that Charlotte’s welcome has made this girl’s transition an easier one; and    To Andree D’Angelo who greeted her new ‘little sister’s’ mother with such enthusiasm and delight.  Girls, thank you for showing with action what it means to be an OLSH girl and for living out our OLSH pillars.

Girls, you are the reason why OLSH is the place to Be!!!  Immunisations Years 7 and 10 Parents in Year 7 and 10 should have received immunisation consent cards from Glen Eira Council. It is important that all cards are returned to your daughter’s homeroom teacher by Wednesday February 12. Any late cards will need to be delivered personally to Glen Eira Council. The dates for the administration of immunisations for this year are:  Year 7    Hepatitis B, Varicella (Chickenpox) and Gardasil (HPV)

Australian Youth Humanities Forum Congratulations Demika Tantra!

During  January, VCE student Demika Tantra was one of  just 100 Victorian students  invited  to attend  the inaugural Australian Youth Humanities Forum hosted by The University of Melbourne.  The program included a number of well‐known  guest  speakers  and panellists  including  authors, playwrights  and philosophers. Throughout the program participants worked with Alice Pung, Hannie Rayson, Raimond Gaita and Dr Robert Mann to gain a sense of the great impact and positive change that humanities can create in our world.   Students were given the opportunity to experience lecture style learning on campus and to meet with current humanities undergraduate students and university lecturers. Many of the workshops were designed to open the participant’s eyes to the vast array of career pathways for students who undertake studies in Humanities during and after their school years.   As a teacher it was certainly most inspiring to hear of the many exciting  journeys that our  students  can  embark upon using their humanities skills.  We  congratulate Demika  for  taking  up  this wonderful  opportunity  and we look forward to following her own humanities journey into the future – no doubt it will be a remarkable one!

Keeping OLSH Girls Safe on our Roads

Parents dropping off and picking up their daughters outside the College on Jasper Road and Robert Street are asked to be mindful of how and where they park, including leaving the driveways of our surrounding residents clear.   In the interests of the safety of all our girls, please do not stop in front of the crossing flag on Jasper Rd or across the main exit driveways in Robert Street.   It is also important that all road rules and parking restrictions in the area are observed, including not making u‐turns during school hours in Jasper Rd and Robert St.  With the construction around our school, it may be an advantage to meet the girls in surrounding streets away from the College.

Please take care driving around OLSH! Your assistance and cooperation is much appreciated.
