Dear Family and Friends of OLSH College Bentleigh,

What a wonderful week it has been for our OLSH College community. The new partnership we have entered into with De La Salle College Malvern co-producing ‘Grease’ has provided us with outstanding performances by cast, crew and staff. The talents of all involved from both schools is a tribute to students, staff and families. Working together, sharing resources and a unity of spirit are all such benefits of Catholic education operating across schools. Congratulations and thank you to all involved.

At the same time, at the global level, this week has also brought before us the raw human experiences of our fragility and vulnerability. Within our own context we must reach out to those who are suffering in whatever ways we are able. As Heart people, in a spirit of reflection and with prayer, together we will continue to authentically live the values of our OLSH Proclamation…gratitude, simplicity, integrity, compassion and forgiveness…we believe in the dignity of every human person. Last Friday, we gathered as a College community for a very special ANZAC ceremony. As we know, this year marks 100 years since our nation's involvement in the First World War. During the centenary we remember not only the original ANZACs who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but we also commemorate more than a century of service by Australian servicemen and women. We gathered to remember and pray for all those who have worn our nation's uniform, including the more than 102,000 who have made the supreme sacrifice.

Despite a biting southerly and showers, Glen Eira City commemorated the ANZACS at a service in Caulfield Park on Sunday 19 April.

This week Year 12 VCE/VET students hosted ‘Stories of Significance’. Each student was required to work with a person over the age of 75 and to spend 15 hours with the aim of producing a booklet around this person’s life.

During this worthwhile experience they had to get to know them, ask questions and discover interesting facts.

The photos below are the girls sharing their booklets with their ‘significant’ person.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2015 for students in Year 7 and Year 9 (Issoudun) will be held on Tuesday 12 May, Wednesday 13 May and Thursday 14 May. During the test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days.

NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in across four key areas - writing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement. Later in the year parents will receive a personal NAPLAN report for your daughter/s which will describe her particular skills across these four areas. The report will also show how your daughter performed in relation to national minimum standards - the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

NAPLAN tests cannot be prepared for in the same way students might prepare for an end of term test. NAPLAN tests skills that develop and improve over time. These are skills that should be continuously developed throughout the year and not just in the lead-up to NAPLAN. The best way to get your daughter ready for NAPLAN is to help her to continue to develop literacy and numeracy skills.

It is best to view the NAPLAN tests as good learning experiences rather than tests designed to put students under pressure.

In recent years there has been a surge in the development of apps designed to bolster mental health and wellbeing. Some of these apps are best used in consultation with a psychologist to monitor wellbeing. Others are fun and clever ways to monitor happiness, mood, or other variables related to wellbeing, like fitness.

Mood Meter Developed in association with the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence and their RULER program, this app requires the user to check in as often as they want in order to record the emotions they are feeling, and what they are doing. The app is designed to expand the user’s emotional vocabulary (great for building emotional intelligence), spot behaviours that are precursors to different emotions, consider strategies for improving their emotional regulation, and even see reports linking emotions with outcomes.

Mindshift A tremendous app for teens and young adults to deal with anxiety in effective ways. The app is designed to help teens develop more helpful ways of thinking, and become proactive in dealing with anxiety-inducing situations.

Deep Sleep You will have to pay for this app, but it’s a ripper. Sometimes it can be hard for our teens to get to sleep. They’re wired, buzzing, and want to keep going. This app works through a progressive muscle relaxation session, helping listeners get to sleep fast. It is a smart choice for teens always buzzing and resisting rest. (Also, check iSleepEasy as an alternative.)

On the 27 April the Studio Arts Photography 3/4 girls went to Top Arts – a section of the VCE Season of Excellence - located at the National Gallery of Victoria, Federation Square.

Showcasing the finest artworks by students of both Studio Arts and Art from 2014, the exhibition gave us the chance to view folios and finished artworks whilst receiving a talk from the education officer at the gallery.

Viewing the exhibition helped us in gaining ideas and sources of inspiration for our own design processes that we are currently completing. The medium used for Studio Arts here at OLSH is photography, so it was interesting to gain an insight on the variety of mediums used by schools across the state such as ceramics, painting, sculptures, film making along with many others.

Later on in the day we walked down the road to the National Gallery of Victoria International on St Kilda Road where we learnt about the Renaissance art movement and looked at some well-known paintings from Pablo Picasso, Giambattista Tiepolo & others. Overall we had a great day and would like to thank Ms Perrin for organising the excursion.

On Monday 19 April the Year 8 students were involved in Medieval Day. The day was held by a group of medieval experts who ran activities and taught us information about medieval history in an engaging and fascinating way. There were four activities: costumes and lifestyle, arms & armour, games and music & dance. During the activities we got to participate by dressing up in armour and clothing from medieval times, we learnt about the games they played and what music was played and the different dances. My favourite activity was the music and dance - I found it very interesting and exciting to see all the strange instruments they used back then. Overall the Year 8 Medieval Day was successful and it was an enjoyable way to start the week!

On Monday 20 April, Mrs. Verrell, Isabel Quintal, Emma Medland, Emma Valeri and I left bright and early, 6.30 to be exact, from OLSH to travel to Marian College in Sunshine. We arrived at 7.30 and were greeted by the Head of Sport and the Principal. After meeting girls at our table and playing some old fashioned games we had our breakfast, the best part!

After a delicious meal we were introduced to Kate Maloney, a Melbourne Vixens netball team player, who told us all about her life story and how she reached her goal to play in the big leagues. As a passionate netballer myself I enjoyed this part of the breakfast the most - Kate is also my favourite netballer so I was extremely excited to have the opportunity to meet her and have a chat!

We then played a game of trivia and had a raffle where prizes were won - after some excitement and competition we played elastics which brought back a few memories from our younger years!

Overall the breakfast was a great experience of meeting new people and having some fun with each other. On behalf of all the girls we are very grateful for the opportunity given to us to come along.

In the last week of Term 1, the Year 11s attended their event of the year - their year level social. Organised in great style, we boarded the ‘Victoria Star’ from the Docklands for a cruise along Port Phillip Bay to Williamstown, then back to St Kilda, Brighton, Elwood, and eventually heading back to the Docklands.

It was a rainy day and the weather had us all worried, however despite the rain and wind, some panic and late comers, the boat set off at 6:30pm with the music setting good vibes. We were treated to pizzas, snacks and soft drinks upon arrival and throughout the evening.

Most of us were on the dance floor throughout the evening and at intervals ducked out on the decking to admire the amazing views of the city and surroundings at dusk and in the evening. It was spectacular to see beautiful Melbourne lit up!

We would like to thank all the teachers that gave up their time to enjoy the evening with us. We are all really appreciative of the effort that was put in. We couldn't have asked for a better evening together!
