A Thousand Letters Home: One WWII Soldier’s Story of War, Love and LifeTeresa Irish, Author and SpeakerIn 2006, after the death of her father, Aarol “Bud” Irish, Teresa Irish opened the Army trunk that had resided in the family home her entire life. There, nestled in row after row, were her Dad’s nearly 1,000 letters from WWII. Read only by him over the past six decades, the letters were postmarked from November 1942 to December 1945. The fragile and yellowed pages were written to Bud’s parents and the sweetheart who would later become his wife, Elaine Marie Corbat. Teresa used those letters and other sources to write A Thousand Letters Home. Hear Teresa’s positive, life-affirming message of “the journey of the letters” at this monthly meeting.

Confessions of a Talk Show HostAndy Rapp, Host of Channel 19's Currently Speaking & Northwood University ProfessorFor the past 14 years, Andy Rapp has hosted Channel 19's award-winning live call-in talk show, Currently Speaking. Each show focuses on a handful of national topics that affect people locally. Listeners are welcome to call in and voice their opinions. At our monthly meeting, Andy will provide an overview on some of the hot national topics at that time, and then invite you to step up to the microphone and share your opinion or insights. Andy is also a speech teacher and forensic team coach at Northwood University.

Exploring the Wildlife on Isle Royale National ParkPhil Stephens, Senior Naturalist, Chippewa Nature CenterIsle Royale’s claim to fame seems to be its wolves, although for most folks who visit this national park in Lake Superior, moose provide a more common thrill. Phil Stephens, a former biologist of the Isle Royale Wolf Ecology Study, will share his experiences and insights through a slide program which will depict the park’s varied ecosystems, as well as his personal encounters with wolves and moose and an update on the wolves’ status. Here is your chance to visit this wonderful northern wilderness without enduring a long ferry ride and the voracious mosquitoes!

Spring/Summer - Day Trips ContinuedIndian Village House Walk (24)Historic Indian Village is celebrating the 116th anniversary of its elegant neighborhood and this is the 40th year that they are inviting the public to their Home and Garden Tour. She Stoops to Conquer at the Michigan Shakespeare Festival in Jackson (04)You won’t need a passport to enjoy this professional performance by English playwright Oliver Goldsmith. For years, English the-atre was trapped in the mode of sentimental comedy - moralistic melodrama that aimed to make audiences weep. Then along came Goldsmith and his uproariously funny She Stoops to Conquer. Kate Hardcastle is engaged to the man of her dreams, Charles Marlowe. Unfortunately, Marlowe is terrified of upper-class women. Kate must pretend to be her own maid to convince him to woo her. This play is considered a comedy of manners, a romantic comedy, a comic satire, and a farce all in one! Prior to the 2 p.m. matinee, we will enjoy lunch at Knight’s Steak-house and Grill. Our package includes show tickets, lunch and deluxe motorcoach transportation. Saturday, August 10: 9:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.Price: $95 Members; $105 Non-Members

Four Unique Authors: Part II (341)Spend the summer with some literary treasur-ers: wonderful books you may have over-looked. Start with Elizabeth von Arnim’s Vera, which relates not only the story of Vera (who has mysteriously died), but of a self-absorbed man and a suspicious aunt. The next book is Queen Lucia by I.F. Benson: the first in a series of satires about the preten-sions of middle-class life in Britain decades ago. Sweltering July’s book is Ann Beattie’s Chilly Scenes of Winter, which tells the story of love-smitten Charles, the young woman he worships from afar, and his friend Sam. The final selection is Serena by Ron Rash, which deals with a newly married couple who travel to the North Carolina mountains in 1929 to create a timber empire, ruthlessly killing or vanquishing those who fall out of favor. All books are available inexpensively from Alibris. Read each book by the dates listed, and join obsessed reader Rose Kohut in lively discussions each month.Wednesdays: May 15, June 19, July 24 & August 21 • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: Curtiss 129

Religion & Ethics

Watching Movies With Plato: Ethical Themes in Films (345)This course is dedicated to the discussion of ethical topics as presented in contemporary films. In Plato’s dialogues, Socrates claims that an unexamined life is not worth living. This then leads to the ultimate question, how ought we live? Today, compared to the Dia-logues, film is an even more powerful force shaping our cultural and social ideals. In this class, contemporary films will be viewed and discussed to examine their ethical themes. Our films will include Groundhog Day, The Life of Pi, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Hope Springs. Discussion will be led by OLLI member, Larry Kammer, who has worked in health care and higher education.Tuesdays: July 9, 16, 23 & 30 • 1 - 5 p.m.Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: Curtiss 129

History & Philosophy of God (346)Now that we have a solid foundation in the 2500 year philosophical debate concerning Free Will and Determinism, we will turn our attention to the prescriptive questions of the debate. For example, if we believe that De-terminism is true and Free Will false, should we consider the ethics of holding people morally responsible for their actions, what about punishment, etc.? Dr. Nichol’s DVDs will guide us through the ethical, emotional, and psychological consequences of accepting Casual Determinism and rejecting Free Will. Since this is a philosophical question, the discussion will not lead to an “absolute” but will tickle your mind to consider the merits of both positions. The class will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor.Thursdays: May 16, 23, 30 and June 6 • 9:30 a.m. - NoonPrice: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: Curtiss 129

Current Events

Drone and Robotic Warfare Technology (352)Of late the media has been dominated with news of how our government is using drone technology in advanced warfare. Specifi-cally, our government has used unmanned drones to kill Al Qaeda operatives who are U.S. citizens in the Middle East. These vehicles are flown from bases operated by the CIA and military in Virginia and Nevada. This course will explore the legal and ethical issues involved with “remote robotic” warfare. We will also look at advanced robotic technology of which the general public is not aware. Ask yourself: How would you feel about China using an unmanned drone to execute a Chinese dis-sident living in California? What if a few Americans died as “collateral damage” in the process? The possibilities of this new technology are endless. This timely class will be led by Jim Johnson, a political science professor and attorney.Fridays: May 31, June 7 & 14 • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: Curtiss 129

The Resurgence and Evolution of American Militia Groups (353)Militia groups are older than the United States. In the last 30 years, these groups have evolved. They have become more militant and related to various splinter politi-cal parties and movements. After a decade of decline, these groups are back and grow-ing. Do they pose a threat? Or are they simply organizations of patriotic citizens exercising their freedom of assembly and speech? This course will explore the current status of militia groups. You might be surprised to learn how active they are in your own backyard. This course will be led by Jim Johnson, a political science professor and attorney.Fridays: August 2, 9 & 16 • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: Curtiss 129
