Hello Fellow OLLI Folks!

By now, I hope you have seen our revised OLLI logo, created by MarkTroester. What a sign of the times. None of us expect a quick fix to the pandemic so we wear our masks and carry on, trying our best to

stay safe and healthy. The hard part is missing our friends. We don’t have all the solutions, but one sure way to beat being alone is to join some of your OLLI buddies online. It can be for courses, workshops, munch & learns, or drop-in meetings to play Trivia or to just become more comfortable using the computer. Please watch for Tricia’s weekly announcements to see how you can join in.

Half of the governing council is elected each July by you – our membership. Once the new council is elected, they then select the executive committee who help run the governing council. Each executive committee serves for one year, elected by the governing council members. Your executive committee this coming year will be Deb Dillon – vice chair, Jim Veney – secretary, and Michael Gunn – chair. Please extend congratulations to Deb and Jim when you see them online. They serve to help make OLLI better.

And speaking of making OLLI a better place – we are introducing a new committee, simply called the Volunteer committee. Barbara Leonard has agreed to chair this new committee. The first order of business will be to narrow down the committee’s responsibilities – but I can tell you that it will involve providing new opportunities for more of you to volunteer your time, energy, and ideas in helping others. Not everyone wants to serve on committees or be facilitator, so here will be a new way to help others. If you are interested in helping, please contact Tricia, Barbara Leonard, or myself.

It looks like we are going to be away from the college campus for a while longer, so please be careful and join us online for friendship and courses.

Michael J. Gunn, Chair, Governing Council

1) OLLI PHOTO OF THE DAY 3Method: Email only Limit: 50Facilitator: Bill Maxwell Receive a new photo in your e-mail each day from Bill Maxwell (facilitator of many photo and travel classes.) The photos will be landscapes, animals, people or abstracts. Bill will include information about the photo (where it was taken, the story behind the photo, why it is important to him, or will just make up something.) You can respond with comments to Bill or the entire group.

2) HOW TO LISTEN TO ANDUNDERSTAND GREAT MUSICPT 2Method: Email only Limit: 20Facilitator: Nancy Dubow This class provides access to companion notes and music links as a prelude, an introduction, into Robert Greenberg’s Great Course entitled How to Listen to and Understand Great Music. Part 2 continues our journey through music with an exploration of Baroque oratorio, cantata, and concerti, and the Enlightenment’s Classical era style and forms. Composers studied include Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, and Handel. Though we may not be viewing his stellar lectures together, you will learn a lot about music, and listen to great music, and we hope you’ll see the lectures as a group at a future time when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, you will be able view them free of charge from your home on the Great Courses website using OLLI’s account.

3) MEMOIR WRITING CLASS -EMAIL ONLYMethod: Email only Limit: 5Facilitator: Joann Ashlock Let’s continue to write... The class is limited to those who have taken this class since Spring 2, 2020. 4) REVISING YOUR WRITINGMethod: Zoom Limit: 8Wednesday, 9/9-10/14, 9-10:30amFacilitator: Jim Veney So you’ve written what you think is a great work, short story, memoir, maybe a book. But it is your fi rst draft, or maybe your second draft. Hemingway said fi rst drafts are crap, and the only thing that counts is that you fi nish it. now comes the important work of turning dross into diamonds. That is the business of rewriting. This class is about rewriting. You will start with your fi nished work and rework it for the class, with the opportunity to read both your fi rst drafts and subsequent rewrites to the class for comments and suggestions.

“You never know what you can do until youtry, and very few try unless they have to.”

Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters has sold millions of copies worldwide and is recognized as a milestone in popular theology. A masterpiece of satire, it offers a sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to “Our Father Below.” At once light-hearted and comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, the thirty-one letters comprises the correspondence of the world-wise devil Screwtape and his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. This course will foster in-depth student discussion of each letter, but also include lectures connecting them to details in C.S. Lewis’s life and other works.

12) FORGOTTEN AMERICANTRAGEDIESMethod: Zoom Limit: 20 Tuesday, 9/8-10/6, 2:30-3:30 Facilitator: Ed Wisneski Most people had never heard about the worst racial massacre in American history until a rally in Tulsa not long after George Floyd’s murder galvanized protesters throughout the world. In 1921, a white mob burned down 35 blocks of Tulsa’s Greenwood neighborhood, the most prosperous African-American community in America that was called “The Black Wall Street.” They looted, fi red guns and dropped burning balls of turpentine from World War I biplanes on the roofs of homes and businesses. No police stopped it. No fi re trucks put out the fl ames. No insurance companies covered the $2,719,745.61 in claims. An estimated 300 died, some allegedly thrown into mass graves that the city -which had long covered up the massacre - is presently considering disinterring. More than 800 were hospitalized; about 10,000, left homeless. Two other tragedies will be examined: the 1923 massacre of Rosewood, Florida, where a white mob slaughtered African-Americans and burned the town to the ground; and the 1917 deportation of 1,185 striking mine workers in railroad box cars from Bisbee, Arizona.

All three monotheistic religions of the West have robust and complex mystical traditions. Class participants will be provided a username and password to log in to watch the series on Great Courses, and then meet twice weekly for a discussion. After examining Jewish Mysticism in Part 1 of Mystical Traditions, we will now look at Christian Mysticism. Christians have found Mystical Elements in the New Testament. Like in the Old Testament the writings of earliest Christianity can be read in terms of mystical experiences and symbols. We will examine these mystical strains as seen in discussions of Jesus’s divine nature and the apostle Paul’s report of ascent to the third heaven. In this second segment of Mystical Tradition we will also look at the influences from Gnostic Christianity, Egypt, Christian monks, Female, English and Spanish Mystics and modern-day Protestant Mysticism.

Throughout history there have been those who have returned and reported. Now this perennial question is no longer a mystery only for religions to affi rm or science to deny. In recent years since the publication of Raymond Moody’s groundbreaking book, Life After Life, these stories have started to be chronicled and told. Many thousands of people have now returned from the Otherside and reported their experiences. Let’s listen and learn. We will be meeting on Zoom at least twice and watching YouTube’s at home.

Self-hypnosis can be used to improve concentration, change habits, boost self-confi dence, reduce stress and overcome phobias. By setting a clear intention for the change you wish to make, your conscious mind gives your subconscious mind a goal to work towards.
