Welcome to OLLI at Fresno State

It’s a new year and on behalf of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, I’m delighted to announce our Spring schedule of activities. The advisory committee has crafted a wonderful selection that I know you will enjoy.

As in the past, we’ve gathered experts on a wide range of subjects, including science, history, education, and music. You’ll also find opportunities to learn new techniques or improve your current skills in gardening, healthy cooking, painting, writing, and digital photography.

Of course we have several fun field trips planned for you as well! This spring the Fresno OLLI will venture both near (Roger Rocka’s and the Fresno Food Expo) and far (the Getty Museum and the Jelly Belly and Anheuser-Busch factories) to explore, experience, and savor a selection of cultural and educational activities.

Those of you who have been around since the beginning of our Fresno program will recognize Maestro Theodore Kuchar from the Fresno Philharmonic, who spoke at our very first OLLI event back in 2005 and also joined us in 2010. We’re pleased to welcome him as a speaker once again.

Fresno State’s OLLI has a variety of choices for member participation, including General and Associate memberships, as well as Short Courses and Field Trips. You choose how involved you wish to be, depending on your availability and interests.

General Sessions and Short Courses are open ONLY to OLLI members. Seating is limited for some events so be sure to send in your registration as soon as possible. We cannot accommodate guests at individual sessions; however, anyone may attend a General Session by becoming an Associate Member ($25 per person fee for the Spring semester), which allows them to attend two General Sessions of their choice. Non-members may attend Field Trips by paying the non-member registration fees for those individual trips (see details under Field Trip listings in this brochure).

Membership fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Members who must cancel their Field Trips or

Short Courses will be refunded only if their space can be filled.

A Musical Journey Through Ireland

California Justice System and How it Impacts Local Government

Charter public schools are a type of education reform effort led by teams of educators, parents and community members who design a school to meet their community’s unique needs. This session will offer information about the background and history of the charter movement and current statewide charter schools progress. We will outline the process for founding new schools in an interactive session that also demonstrates how community members and leaders from business, nonprofit, and education sectors are vitally important to the development of a high-quality charter school. Jeff Sands is the Director of School Development for the Central Valley for the California Charter Schools Association. After ten years in the classroom and five years working with nonprofits to create organizational and fund development strategies, Jeff provides strategy, guidance and technical assistance to educational and community leaders in developing new, high-quality charter public school options for students in the Central San Joaquin Valley.

Get a jump on St. Patrick’s Day with Celtic ensemble, Pipe on the Hob. The music, architecture and cultural history of Ireland are illustrated through both Power Point images and the performance of traditional tunes and songs on fiddle, hammer dulcimer, Celtic harp, keyboard and bodhran (Irish drum). Come prepared to sing-along! The band’s vocalist, Karana Hattersley-Drayton, will provide the historic overview. Ms. Drayton has taught several courses for OSHER in past years. She has a M.A. from U.C. Berkeley in Folklore and completed three years of coursework toward the Ph.D. in architectural history.

Supervisor Henry Perea will talk about the inner workings of the California justice system. Supervisor Perea’s accomplishments include: Development of Go Green Fresno County, a comprehensive environmental policy package unanimously supported by the Board of Supervisors that encourages superior environmental stewardship for Fresno County and its operations; spearheading of a pilot program for Fresno County to invest public funds in community banks in an effort to stimulate the local economy; and creation of an Executive Budget Committee to facilitate a more thorough and efficient County budget process.

Service Dogs:Guide Dogs for the Blind and Search & Rescue

The Maestro is Here!

This session will focus on two different aspects of the service dog industry, guide dogs for the blind and Search & Rescue. GDB’s services for the blind begin long before meeting and training with a guide dog, and extend well beyond that training experience. The end goal is to have a partnership that opens doors to new possibilities in life. Jim Russell will walk you through the process from selecting the puppies, to that final moment when they are passed on to their new owners. The second section of the session will cover the dogs of Search & Rescue. Chris Colburn will discuss in detail about the Search & Rescue program; how K9s are used in the program, how they go about choosing the right K9 for the job, and how they are trained for the program.

After his popular presentation in the Osher course on the Fresno philharmonic last Fall, Maestro Theodore Kuchar is back to address a larger audience with his charming personality and fascinating life story. He will share with you what it takes to conduct orchestras all around the world and to be a highly recorded artist, while showcasing his two prized violas and playing for you some heavenly music on them (should that be your lucky day!). Fresno Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Theodore Kuchar, one of the most prolifically recorded conductors of the past decade, appears on over 100 compact discs for the Naxos, Brilliant Classics, Ondine and Marco Polo labels. For the past 17 years, he has served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of two of Europe’s preeminent orchestras, the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine.

Short courses are designed for smaller groups, providing the opportunity for more interaction with the instructors. These courses are self-supporting and require a minimum enrollment.

Discover the healing powers of creativity by learning about chakras, the golden ratio, and colors with local artist Jessica Lynn Stuart. The class will explore the Internet as a learning tool, have open dialog about philosophies of art, while learning beginning painting techniques in a fun and friendly setting. Each student will create an individualized artwork with acrylic paint on scrapbooking paper. Born and raised in Fresno, California, Jessica’s artwork has brought her all over the country. She is a self-taught professional artist, except for what she learned from public schools in Fresno. Her self-studies include drawing, painting, sculpture, and graphic art (among many other mediums). Jessica has won several local awards for her drawings and paintings which are shown in many galleries in Fresno and the United States.

This course will detail the German ideology and warfare in the East, focusing on the evolution of German policies toward Jews (and Poles and Slavs) from their initial persecution and imprisonment, to killing squads, to the establishment of Ghettos, and the finally the implementation of the Final Solution to the Jewish Question. Dr. Jordine completed a Ph.D. in Modern German History at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and is currently an Associate Professor of History at California State University, Fresno. Dr. Jordine’s dissertation focused on German intervention in North Africa during World War II and she has presented numerous conference presentations on Rommel, Germany and WWII, and is currently doing research on German and British Intelligence in North Africa during WWII. Dr. Jordine also teaches courses focused on Modern Germany, WWII, the Holocaust, and 20th Century Dictators.

Discover a deeper sense of calm as you learn to coordinate gentle, slow moving yoga poses with your breath. This class will focus on gentle yoga, breath work, and guided imagery. No previous yoga experience is required. Tanya is a RYA-200 certified Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga instructor through “It’s Yoga” and has trained in restorative yoga, yin yoga, and hatha yoga.

Yoga Class Etiquette:

• Your practice begins when you walk in the door.

• Please silence all cell phones.

• Avoid eating heavy meals 1-2 hours before practicing yoga.

• We suggest you wear fitted comfortable clothing for class.

Want to take your memories and create a legacy and record of your life? “Memories to Memoirs” is a class for people interested in writing creative nonfiction from their own experiences. An autobiography is chronological, but memoir is episodic, based in story and why the writer remembers it. This class utilizes storytelling, and teaches participants how to get their stories down, and what to do with them to create engaging reading that fulfills the author’s own purposes. All experience levels are welcome. Megan Bohigian is a lifelong writer with a Masters of Fine Arts Degree from Fresno State in Creative Writing. She has worked as a journalist, and published nonfiction, fiction and poetry. She taught English and Creative Writing in Fresno Unified Schools for many years, and currently teaches English Composition at Fresno City College and memoir workshops for Memoir Journal.

A growing number of people are turning away from organized religion, while at the same time religious fundamentalism is on the move. Religious extremism appears to be growing in strength, while humanism, atheism, and the natural sciences are also growing. These are interesting times to think about the power and limits of religion. The course will consider criticisms and interpretations of religion, with a specific focus on current events and contemporary issues. It will consider the challenge of growing religious diversity. It will consider conflicts between science and religion. It will examine arguments about the benefits and harms of religion. And it will consider the role of religion in America’s secular public life. It will also look at the ways that religion shows up in contemporary ethical, social, and cultural disputes. Participants will have an opportunity to argue and discuss. Andrew Fiala is Chair of the Philosophy Department and Director of the Ethics Center at Fresno State. He is also a columnist for the Fresno Bee, writing on ethics and religion.

This fun digital camera course will familiarize you with your digital camera and update you with the latest photographic techniques. In addition, subjects covered will be workflow, composition and home inventory photography—all explained in basic layperson’s terminology. You will also learn how to photograph your valuables for insurance purposes in case of a loss (earthquake, fire, theft or flood). This Includes stamps, coins, jewelry, pottery, antiques and other special serial numbers using the “Macro or Close-up”, setting on your camera. Ken McCoy is known for his work in digital media throughout California and his photographic work has been published in Associated Press, Newsweek, Glamour, World Picture News, INSTYLE, and Showcase magazines.

Most people have spent the majority of their lifetime working and becoming successful in their chosen careers. Their careers are an integral part of their identity. Therefore, leaving behind a career and making the decision to retire is a major life change. The retiree’s life and sense of self will be affected in every way. The development of a clear and personalized, flexible Retirement Transitioning Plan (RTP) can be an important step toward a successful life experience after retiring from the work force. The elements of an RTP are categorized into psychological, medical, social, self-actualization, and financial. Gordon is an alumni of the rehabilitation counseling master’s program at Fresno State. Following his graduation, he was in private rehabilitation practice in Fresno until he accepted the position as Director of Program Services at Porterville Sheltered Workshop (PSW). PSW is a non-profit organization which provides a wide spectrum of rehabilitation services to 650 individuals daily.

The English Monarchy in the Tudor-Stuart Periodwith Dr. Allen Carden

This course will be about the story of how our bodies, and those of other backboned animals, owe their basic design and functioning to evolutionary innovations going back over three billion years to our very earliest non-human ancestors. The ways we are put together and function are variations wrought by evolution of structures first seen in fossils of early fish and physiological functions originally part of living in water. For example, our hands and limbs are modifications of fins of fishes while our kidneys owe their functioning to fishy adaptations for aquatic life. Session one will cover topics such as evolution as fact & theory, Charles Darwin, and earliest signs of life on earth. Session two will discuss design features of humans and session three will cover topics such as how are bodies work, our “inner ocean,” skin & kidneys. Dr. Haas was a professor of ichthyology, vertebrate natural history, animal behavior, human ecology and general biology at Fresno State for 23 years.

Join Healthy Eating Educator Becky Cantrell for her seasonal cooking series. With spring around the corner, learn new recipes based around the seasonal produce offerings. The course will talk about living the 4 pillars of health and how to create healthier meals for you and your family. Becky Cantrell is a Healthy Eating Specialist and a Whole Foods Market Team Member. She is passionate, committed, and knowledgeable and can’t wait to inspire you to create a more nutrient dense plate and share your excitement with your friends. Don’t miss this series! The United States is currently marking the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, a conflict that nearly tore the nation in two. This course will take a fresh look at this momentous event—and the myriad social, economic, and political changes it wrought—by focusing on the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. We will consider the election that put Lincoln in the White House as well as the president’s response to the secession crisis, emancipation, the turn to total war, and finally, the challenges of putting the nation back together once the Civil War came to a close. Dr. Kytle is an Assistant Professor of History at Fresno State. He is a regular contributor to the New York Times’s award-winning Civil War blog, “Disunion,” and has published essays in the Journal of Southern History, American Nineteenth Century History, and the Journal of the Historical Society. Dr. Kytle is completing two books: Strike the Blow: Romantic Reformers and the Fight against Slavery in the Civil War Era and, with Blain Roberts, Struggling with Slavery in the Cradle of the Confederacy: Memory and the “Peculiar Institution” in Charleston, South Carolina.

The British royal family—they fascinate us and perhaps annoy us, and they had a whole lot to do with early American history and the culture that comes down to us to this day. This series will explore the sometimes tumultuous Tudor-Stuart monarchy of England in the 16th and 17th centuries and trace the political, religious, and cultural legacy they left to Britain, and America, to the present. Dr. Carden is a history professor at Fresno State, Fresno Pacific University, and Fresno City College. He is also an author of several history books.

Jazz: America’s Music Part 2with Dr. Matthew Darling

Gardening 101with Calliope Correia

Opera and its American sister musical theatre is alive and well in the United States. This four-lecture series will provide an in-depth introduction to American opera, its history and current standing in the repertory of opera houses across this country. Students will learn about American opera composers, compositions, singers, personalities and venues. Dr. Radford will also prepare students for the upcoming Fresno Grand Opera presentation of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide as well as introduce students to new American operas being premiered today. Dr. Radford is Assistant Professor of Music at Fresno State where he coordinated the voice program and directs the opera theatre program. He has sung professionally for over 20 years and made his directorial debut over 10 years ago.

Jazz music is a truly American art form, born from the blending of two distinctly different and non-American musical forms: Western European art music and West African music. In Part II of our jazz lecture series, we will begin by listening to and discussing more jazz styles in the 1960s, including Latin Jazz and a more in-depth look into the life and music of the legendary Dave Brubeck. We will then proceed to fusion jazz featuring artists such as Miles Davis and Chick Corea, and Contemporary Jazz featuring artists such as Pat Metheny and Spyro Gyra. We will conclude by spending time listening to and discussing the music of current jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, and Maria Schneider. Please join us as we explore how Jazz continues to be a vital, creative, and uniquely American art form as we move forward in the twenty-first century.

This course will discuss the following topics:

• Intro to gardening—the basics of gardening and the theories of the people-plant connection. What you need for a successful garden, whether it be in the ground or in containers and the basic needs of every plant - water, soil, fertilizer, etc. How to make your own “black gold” by composting and vermicomposting.

• Houseplants 101—houseplants are by far the biggest challenge to keep alive but the benefits of having them are wonderful. Also learn how to grow successful houseplants and the basics of propagating your own to share with friends.

• Vegetables 101—grow your own! This topic will cover everything you need to know about growing your own healthy produce from seed to harvest. Includes what grows well here and the basics of environmentally friendly pest control.

• Harvest and enjoy!—This topic will be held at the Horticulture Nursery at Fresno State. We will have samples of produce and visit our certified organic herb garden and enjoy the sights, smells and tastes of the garden.

Calliope grew up on a raisin ranch on the west side of Fresno. She spent a good portion of her adulthood traveling and living across the country. Dirt has always been a part of her life and nature has always been her center. She is completely obsessed with teaching people to grow their own food, and to understand and appreciate the people-plant connection.

The 2013 expo is your opportunity to connect with America’s #1 agricultural community! Meet the people behind one of the most productive and distinctive food producing regions in the world. California’s San Joaquin Valley is home to thousands of growers, food producers, manufacturers, processors, winemakers and brewers reflecting the rich diversity of our region.

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance. To fulfill this mission, the Museum continues to build its collections through purchase and gifts, and develops programs of exhibitions, publications, scholarly research, public education, and the performing arts that engage our diverse local and international audiences. Exhibitions and Installations available during the visit—In Focus: Robert Mapplethorpe; Johannes Vermeer’s Woman in Blue Reading a Letter; Untold Stories: Collecting and Transforming Medieval Manuscripts; and Looking East: Rubens’s Encounter with Asia. Please note that this trip is not a guided tour. In addition, lunch and dinner are at your own expense.

Our first tour is of the Jelly Belly Factory. During the 40-minute walking tour, Jelly Belly tour guides will show you a real working factory where they cook up over 150 different sweet treats. Learn the secrets to how they create the legendary Jelly Belly jelly bean, and discover why it takes more than a week to make a single bean. After the tour we will then stop at a local restaurant for lunch. The second tour will be the Beermaster tour at Anheuser-Busch. Along the tour you will visit the historic Brew House, Fermentation Cellars, Bevo Packaging Facility and Finishing Cellars, including a sample directly from a Finishing Tank! You will visit the Budweiser Clydesdales stable and view some of their harnesses in the Tack Room. Please note that flat, closed-toe tennis shoes are mandatory to take this tour and are required for every guest. Also, there are no high heels or soft-soled resin sandals, such as “Crocs” allowed on the tour. No jewelry of any kind will be allowed on the tour. In consideration for being allowed to participate in these Activities, on behalf of myself and my next of kin, heirs and representatives, I release from all liability and promise not to sue the State of California, the Trustees of The California State University, California State University, Fresno and their employees, officers, directors, volunteers and agents (collectively “University”) from any and all claims, including claims of the University’s negligence, resulting in any physical or psychological injury (including paralysis and death), illness, damages, or economic or emotional loss I may suffer because of my participation in these Activities, including travel to, from and during the Activities.

I am voluntarily participating in these Activities. I am aware of the risks associated with traveling to/from and participating in these Activities, which include but are not limited to physical or psychological injury, pain, suffering, illness, disfigurement, temporary or permanent disability (including paralysis), economic or emotional loss, and/or death. I understand that these injuries or outcome may arise from my own or other’s actions, inaction, or negligence; conditions related to travel; or the condition of the Activities locations. Nonetheless, I assume all related risks, both known or unknown to me, of my participation in these Activities, including travel to, from and during the Activities.

I agree to hold the University harmless from any and all claims, including attorney’s fees or damage to my personal property, which may occur as a result of my participation in these Activities, including travel to, from and during the Activities. If the University incurs any of these types of expenses, I agree to reimburse the University. If I need medical treatment, I agree to be financially responsible for any costs incurred as a result of such treatment. I am aware and understand that I should carry my own health insurance.

I am 18 years or older. I understand the legal consequences of signing this document, including (a) releasing the University from all liability, (b) promising not to sue the University, (c) and assuming all risks of participating in these Activities, including travel to, from and during these Activities.
