Location: Community Learning Center - Room 210

Each class will include guidelines, interactive experiences, group sharing, and journaling.

Androgyny as Personal Growth

Subject Area: Social Sciences

Mondays: 2 Sessions 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM Start: Mon 6/3/19 End: Mon 6/10/19

Location: Community Learning Center - Room 210

Course Description Jesus, in the Gospel According to Thomas: "When the male shall not be male and the female shall not be female, then shall you enter the Kingdom of Heaven." Androgyny is the psychosocial expression of "Wholeness." Come see how societies, civilizations, and the individual have the potential to express the androgynous principle. Scholars submit that healthy civilizations and individuals would exhibit combinations of both feminine and masculine qualities. In the individual, access to the full range of human qualities restores a sense of unity by re-owning denied aspects of their psyches. This restoration towards wholeness allows for greater flexibility in being, thinking, feeling and doing. This two-session class will culminate in an androgyny measurement to ascertain your level of androgyny/wholeness (i.e. male/female attributes) expression.

Instructor: Mark Meadows

Mark has his Ph.D. in Sociology with interests in spirituality, virtues, aging, and comparative worldviews. He has lived and/or worked in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, India, and Mexico. The Power of Non-Violence

Location: Community Learning Center - Room 205

In reality, non-violence requires an active depth of courage and strength for those who practice this peaceful form of resistance. Utilizing Walter Wink's Jesus and Nonviolence: A Third Way, this class will unpack the real implications of the words of Jesus in Matthew 5: 39 - 41.: "But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him/her as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him/her your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him/her for two miles." The discussion also will incorporate present day examples of the non-violent revolutions of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Please bring your beliefs, insights, and wisdom to share.

What Is Your Belief?

Subject Area: Philosophy/Religion

Wednesdays: 2 Sessions 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM Start: Wed 6/19/19 End: Wed 6/26/19

Location: Community Learning Center - Room 205

Course Description The poem The Blind Men and the Elephant by John Godfrey Saxe begins: It was six men of Indostan To learning much inclined, Who went to see the elephant (Though all of them were blind), That each by observation Might satisfy his mind. In the poem, these six people look to different aspects of the elephant to help to shape their belief about the elephant. Each takes an understanding from the journey, but each remains limited in their ability to see the whole elephant.

These two sessions will provide opportunities to explore and share images and ideas of God, the universe and/or the elements in your life that bring meaning to you. Hopefully, these classes will serve to broaden and enhance each participant’s understanding of his or her own belief system, recognizing that the elephant / meaning is much bigger than any one belief system.

Please bring your beliefs, insights, and wisdom to share.

Subject Area: History/Current Events

Wednesdays: Single Session 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM Start: Wed 6/26/19 End: Wed 6/26/19

Location: Community Learning Center - Room 203

Course Description Spain's need to populate her far Northern frontiers in New Spain, what later becomes the American Southwest and the State of Arizona, was counteracted by the Apache peoples who had held dominance over this area for generations. Programs devised in Madrid and Mexico City to eliminate the Apache menace became exercises in futility that gave way to the experiment called Establimentos de Paz (Peace Camps). The plan was to provide material goods to those Apache who would give up raiding and settle near Royal Presidios. One such Peace Camp was located north of the presidio at Tucson. This presentation gives an overview of how Peace Camps came about, their underlying development and eventual disbanding following Mexico's independence from Spain.
