Tailor-made solutions

Aker Wirth has the solution to meet your requirements for desert or arctic environmental conditions. A full line of triplex, high pressure mud pumps can handle any drilling requirements for onshore or offshore applications.

ThetpK series of tough, field-proven models for high operating pressure and large flow include:

• Ratings from 800 to 2 200 input hp,• Rear or top-mounted skid arrangement,• Belt, chain or gear-driven configurations, • AC or DC drive motor configurations, • Operating pressure from 5 000 to 7 500 PSI.Triplex pumps are extremely compact and occupy a minimum of space yet provide the high volume and high pressure capabilities necessary for today’s com-petitive drilling practices.

Aker Wirth triplex pumps are engineered to produce a very high work capacity with the minimum RPM, thus resulting in low stress and wear to vital components. The long stroke design reduces the number of load revers-als in heavily stressed components and increases the life of the fluid end parts through reduced speeds and valve operation. The fluid end has separate suction and discharge modules including the hydraulic valve closure system. The Hydraulic Quick Release system offers minimal downtime when replacing fluid end parts.

High pressure triplex mud pumps

Main features of Aker Wirth mud pumps:• Optimal smoothness of operation • Compact design, less weight • Pump drive units for permanent load operation, with a high degree of stability

• Gear wheels and drive shaft of wear-resistant, heat-treated steel

• Hydraulic Quick Release System • Independent lubrication system • Long lifespan on consumables items • Surveillance and control elements for early recognition of failures

• Full material traceability as standard • Fluid ends in stainless steel (optional) for increased life

Aker Wirth has manufactured pumps since 1905, the first pump bigger than 1 000 hp in 1961, followed by the 2 000 hp milestone in 1974.

Experience shows that Aker Wirth mud pumps, designed for longevity, are the most reliable, field-proven and inno-vative units on the market. Constant improvements and new ideas reflect this. Reducing downtime and mainte-nance costs is one of our major goals.

Two independent in-house test stands demonstrate mud pump performance testing under full load conditions with high pressure testing up to 7 500 PSI, which assures highest possible quality control.

Aker Wirth also offers additional fluid end consumables suitable for various mud pumps, such as different type of valves, liners and pistons for each individual application.

Safety comes first

Special features of Aker Wirth pumps

Aker Wirth mud pumps Premium Line products are equipped with a fully integrated, Hydraulic Quick Release system for the maintenance of fluid end parts, i.e. fast-change tensioning system for fluid ends, for liner retention, changing valves and easy open-ing of valve covers. This hydraulic system was patented in 1967.

The Hydraulic Quick Release system allows the main-tenance crew to carry out routine operational piston / liner changes and fluid end maintenance with ease and a minimum of tools in complete safety.

This system ensures the highest possible degree of safety during maintenance procedures and therefore complies with current HSE requirements.

This hydraulic system is a significant factor with regards to our philosophy concerning safe, effective and easy maintenance.

Hydraulic Quick Release System

The unique hydraulic tensioning system employs a hydraulic hand pump or a hydraulic power pack with connection hose and snap connector. Once the correct pressure is applied to relevant components, retaining nuts can be removed by hand.

This system ensures that an equal and correct, pre-cal-culated torque, which cannot be exceeded, is applied to all bolting, thus substantially increasing equipment lifespan when compared to traditional mechanical main-tenance routines.

Reducing maintenance costs

7

The gear-driven mud pump is a significant development that improves performance and reliability by reducing downtime and maintenance cost during operation. It is powered by a single top-mounted, water-cooled AC motor.

This unit completes the existing product range of triplex high pressure mud pumps and replaces chain or belt drive configuration.

The essential features:• Increased service life • Reduced maintenance work• Lower service costs • Less vibration• Lower noise emission• Weight reduction

Drawworks – braking systems

The drawworks in our standard configuration includes three independent braking systems:

Primary active braking system:The drawworks main drive motors, supplied by Aker Wirth, not only have a driving function but are also used for regenerative braking. For braking, the drawworks motors will operate in generator mode and feed back the braking energy into a resistor bank or to the mains until the load is stopped. Regenerative braking can preferably manage braking at low speed or no speed conditions, and can stop the load at predetermined positions.

Secondary active braking system:The second braking system is a dynamic brake, which is an electromagnetic braking device. This brake is a high energy absorption device thus maintaining appropriate braking torque at higher drawworks speeds. Under low-speed or no-speed conditions the eddy current brake can only produce low or no braking torque. Under these conditions the regenerative brake takes most of the load.

Emergency and parking braking system:

The disc brake represents the third braking system and is used for emergency braking and parking only. The disc brake and the associated callipers are kept open by a hydraulic system thereby providing a fail-safe mecha-nism. In case of an emergency such as loss of power, hydraulic failure or system failures of the drives, all cal-lipers will be applied.

Autodriller System

Drawworks – control systems

DICS – Drawworks Interface and Control System

The DICS is the drawworks control interface to all com-munication partners such as driller interface HMI, VFD system, MCC system, Zone management system, etc.The DICS comprises also the drawworks control func-tions for the gear, lube and brake control system.

Features:• Single interface for all communication partners • Full drawworks control of all mechanical functions• Simple integration into any HMI system• Communication protocols: Profibus DP, S7, Ethernet

ZPS – Zone Positioning System

The Zone Positioning System (ZPS) or so called Anti-Collision System is designed to protect the travelling assembly when approaching the natural limits of the drilling derrick.

It will slow down and stop the drawworks when the travelling assembly reaches dedicated positions in the derrick to prevent collisions with the derrick crown or the drill floor.

In addition the system calculates the safe braking dis-tance at any time based on the actual load and speed (kinetic energy monitoring). The system is also capable of positioning the drawworks to driller-defined work points to assist the drilling opera-tion. The ZPS is ready to interface to the Zone management systems via the DICS.

The PLC of the Aker Wirth ZPS is based on fail-safe hardware components and therefore state-of-the-art design. This design is suitable for fulfilling the require-ments of SIL 3.

Features:• Safe and collision-free movement of the traveling block

• Protection against personal injury and damage to drilling equipment

• Auto-correlation of the brake capacity and the hook load (kinetic energy monitoring)

• Fail-safe design• Easy retrofit; integration of existing protection systems• Work point positioning to ease drilling operation

Aker Wirth offers a complete state-of-the-art Drawworks Control Package (DCP) consisting of

• DICS - Drawworks Interface and Control System • ZPS - Zone Positioning System including dynamic Anti-Collision System functions• ECS - Eddy Current Brake Control System • ADS - Auto-Driller System• WPS - Wireline Protection System• DBS - Dual Brake System• BBS - Battery Back-up System

ECS – Eddy Current Brake Control System

The ECS is designed to improve the performance and reliability of the eddy current brake while at the same time providing a degree of redundancy by providing independent control of the coils.

Features:• Brake current control• Coil resistance and temperature measurement• Separate SCR for each pair of brake coils• Alarm indication• Water volume and temperature control• Drawworks drum speed control

ADS – Auto-Driller System

The integrated auto-driller as independent system confirms redundancy to the main drive system.

• AC frequency controlled independent drive arrangement

• Maximized drilling efficiency• Automatic drilling operation• Minimized downtime • Smooth block control

The capability to build in an Auto-Driller is easily given by adding an extra AC drive arrangement, independent

from the main drive system. This Auto-Driller system is able to control the ROP triggered by various interactively set parameters and can also be used as an emergency back-up for the main drive. In case of a major failure of the drawworks main drive, the drill string can be secured from the bottom into cased hole at a reduced speed.During drilling, automatic operation control is possible on any of the following parameters: constant speed, constant weight on bit, constant standpipe mud pressure and constant DDM or top-drive torque. Additionally the operator can interactively set limits to the drilling parameters.A high degree of sensitivity and accuracy of control can be achieved. This allows maximum service life of the drilling tools and a reduced workload for the drilling crew while providing maximum adherence to the desired drilling parameters.Features:

• Continuous, automatic weight-on-bit, DDM torque, rate of penetration or pump pressure control

• Emergency lifting and lowering capacity• Easy operation with simple handling• Complete monitoring of the drilling process• Enhanced safety and equipment protection• Interactively settable limits for all parameters

KCA Deutag‘s new T-208 rig is built to meet Europe‘s demanding environmental standards. The T-208 has a 1 150 hp rating for drilling to 5 000 m with 5-in. drill pipe. The rig’s modular design makes moving locations easy because of its box-on-box substructure.

In 2006 Aker Wirth delivered oilfield drilling equipment such as belt-driven HP mud pumps, 1 600 hp and gear-driven drawworks 1 500 hp (ATEX certified).

Sevan driller – the first SSP (Sevan Stabilized Platform) newly built drilling unit for Sevan Marine. The fully completed rig will be capable of drilling in harsh environments and in ultra-deep water. The Sevan Driller will have a capacity of drilling 40 000 ft wells in water depths to 12 500 ft.

Aker Wirth delivered oilfield drilling equipment such as gear-driven HP mud pumps 2 200 hp, drawworks 4 500 hp and rotary table 60 1/2”-H.

Aker Wirth contributes significantly to the mining of fossil resources – onshore/offshore and always state-of-the-art.

The KTB project near Windischeschenbach, Germany is the most significant geological research project to-date. The world’s largest onshore drilling rig was equipped with 12 900 hp and a total weight of approx. 2 500 tons. For this project Aker Wirth de-livered the world’s first gear-driven drawworks that was equipped with 4Q drive and delivered 4 500 hp. The drilling depth of 9 101 m was limited by extremely high rock temperatures.

The “Saipem 10 000” is a deep-sea drilling ship extraordinaire. Its dual derrick system is used worldwide for oil and gas exploration. The rigging includes 4 mud pumps (TPK 2200), 2 drawworks (GH 4500 EG) and 2 rotary tables (RTSS 60 1/2“-H), all from Aker Wirth. With Aker Wirth’s proven levels of quality, previously unattainable levels of reliability were achieved.
