Residents,

We are pleased to bring you your first issue of Ocotillo Living and hope you will enjoy the monthly, social newsletters.

N2 Publishing is the leading provider of specialty publications for residents of exclusive communities across the nation. Our objective is to turn neighborhoods into communities with our monthly publications and events. Locally, we produce maga-zines for Ahwatukee Foothills, Pinnacle, and Windgate Ranch.

This publication is a social newsletter and it is designed to reflect the social activities and interests within the Ocotillo area. We are not associated, endorsed, or sanctioned by your local HOA; therefore, we will not be the voice of your HOA, Prop-erty Manager, or Developer. If you have questions regarding anything that involves the HOA, please contact them directly as we are not a representative of the Board.

This publication is being provided free of charge to you as a homeowner as the cost of producing, printing, and mailing each newsletter is covered by the advertising partners that you see in each issue. We try our best to screen our advertisers to ensure that they can provide the types of services that you may need or want as a homeowner. If you currently utilize a business that does excellent work, please let us know as they may want to reach out to your neighbors as well. Also, if you own or run a business and would like information on reaching your neighbors each month, contact me or Kathleen Becher for advertising information.

Each publication you will see is unique to your neighborhood, and the publication will reflect who you are as a community. A

NotePublisher’s

typical publication will include: social event information specific to the residents of Ocotillo; fun and free social events put on by N2; city issues and ideas; activities and club information; busi-ness information, pictures, personal stories, and articles (mostly written and photographed by your neighbors) along with other information specifically tailored to your neighborhood.

Along with the magazine, we will host various free events to bring the community together - free dinners out at top restau-rants, salon reviews, golf tournaments, and more. We will com-municate to you the various events we are hosting through the newsletter and emails. If you wish to be included please email me at [email protected].

The events and the publications are designed to increase social connections between residents and to develop a true sense of community. By providing a well-designed publication full of stories and photos, we have seen N2 neighborhoods increase attendance at social events, and allow residents to widen their circle of friends.

I look forward to meeting each of you at our upcoming neigh-borhood events!

David and Gayle Johnson and their Golden Retriever, “Chandler,” have happily resided for almost four years in

their stone and stucco, Tuscan style home in Ocotillo. Although not retired, they moved from Ohio to live near their adult son and daughter, who’re both single professionals, separately resid-ing locally. “During 34 years of marriage, we’ve enjoyed many corporate relocations including to Boston, David’s hometown. We’re quite experienced decorating our home,” Gayle, a self-taught interior designer comments. “Good thing I love to deco-rate because that passion and talent came in very handy when-ever we relocated.” The Johnsons’ home welcomes family and friends to feel at home, relax and enjoy. Gayle, a former full time teacher, also enjoys substitute teaching in the CUSD elementary schools. The decorative style of their home is a relaxed, eclectic and casu-ally elegant mix. Antiques, newer furniture and accessories cre-ate a timeless, collected and unique look. The inviting, under-stated setting has a soothing, neutral palette of cream, burnished

gold, soft black and light brown shades. There are wood ceiling beams in many rooms, some with grass cloth wallpaper between them. Doors are dark honey-stained alder wood. The dining room has a glittering, French antique crystal and iron chande-lier. Floors are travertine, wood and carpeting. An embellished fireplace warms the ample family room. The charming, light-filled kitchen has light honey hued, alder wood kitchen cabinets and an island stained dark ebony that are topped with luscious slab granite. There’s a porcelain farm sink. The kitchen’s homey feel is the heart of the home’s activity.

Diverse decorative accents that standout are: a carved wooden “guardian angel” from Mexico in the front foyer; antique tiger maple grandmother’s clock; framed old, family photos; large antique mirror propped against the wall behind a vintage petite baby grand piano; coral and shells from Bermuda vacations; slight touches of leopard print fabric and a black basalt Wedge-wood pedestal bowl from Palm Beach, Florida. A painted,

antique end table that’s a family heirloom from England; old books, pottery and baskets; antique wooden shopkeepers’ sign lettered in gold leaf; deer antler candlesticks; black tray found in Nantucket; a 19th century child’s rocking horse and antique oil paintings. The dining room’s mahogany open hutch from Montreal showcases gleaming white English ironstone and ivory Italian and Portuguese ceramics. All are artfully arranged in attractive vignettes around the Johnsons’ home.

A large window wall looks out onto a tranquil, lush backyard full of flowering shrubs, potted plants and green lawn. A square swimming pool with fountains and a comfortable, covered patio offers delightful al fresco dining. Another sitting area is enjoyed as an outdoor living room. Their wooden dock sits beyond on an Ocotillo waterway. There’s a special mountain view from a private, spacious upstairs balcony. Gayle concludes, “Our home is our own special place to relax and enjoy. It should reflect who we are. After all, there’s no place like home.”

It’s true that a picture is worth a thousand words, because if you were to take a quick glance at the Giacobbis’ 2011 Christmas card, you get a definite sense of how active this family truly is.

Devoted husband and father, Tom appears a little disheveled, half dressed in his dentist scrubs and holding onto a golf club. Loving wife and fitness fanatic, Grace, is darting off to her next marathon. Children David, Megan and Alex are all geared up for all of the sports and activities they take part in. Of course the family is hamming up its hectic household for the camera, but to be fair, it’s a pretty accurate depiction.

Tom and Grace grew up in nearby towns in upstate New York but didn’t meet until dental school at SUNY Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. After they married, like most Arizona trans-plants, the Giacobbis chose to move to Chandler to flee the brutal winter weather, but also because they knew Chandler was a great place to start a business and raise a family.

In 2002, the Giacobbis opened Chandler Dental Health, one of the most respected dental practices in the valley. When they’re

not improving the smiles of the citizens of Chandler, Tom and Grace can be found shuttling their children around to basketball, football, golf, soccer, volleyball and softball practice. Tom and Grace might catch dinner and a movie from time to time, but because they’re such a tight-knit clan, it’s more common to find them hanging out with their children on a Friday night.

Whenever the opportunity arises, the Giacobbis like to escape to Payson to recharge their batteries and play in the snow like Tom and Grace did growing up in New York. The Giacobbis have carved a comfortable niche here in Arizona and are proud to call Chandler “home.”

Diabetes type 2, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer are all preventable consequences of obesity. Obesity is spreading in the lives of kids, robbing them of their ability to live a full life. “The problem is much more

than just a kid who needs to go outside and play. It’s a multi-faceted problem,” exclaimed Kame. WiL Power Challenge, a nonprofit organization equipped to practically change the lives of children in their struggle with obesity, emerged in 2008 out of Kame’s need to change the score.

WiL Power Challenge is a free 20 week program for 10 to 14 year olds with 7 locations across the valley. The program is struc-tured as a contest with incentives and awards. Participants must complete three one-hour workouts and one thirty minute nutri-tion class weekly. WiL Power Challenge empowers participants to be successful beyond the program. Cooking classes, grocery store tours and medical presentations are implemented to teach kids how to live a healthy lifestyle. One hour workouts are man-datory for parents each week. “The success is in a family doing it together,” says Kame. The experienced staff ensures a sustained change for families.

The entire staff is run by volunteers. Kids are trained by quality, skilled staff members including Nate Shaw, strength and condi-tion coordinator for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Vince Kame himself treated most of the Arizona Suns in the 90’s, including Charles Barkley.

In 5 years, Vince Kame hopes to open up other chapters throughout the country while aligning with hospitals and health care organizations. WiL Power Challenge is tangibly empower-ing the next generation to live a full life. To be a part of the dif-ference visit www.wilpowerchallenge.com to find out how your life can leave a mark.

Ocotillo resident, Chandra Krakora, enjoys cooking and is accomplished at doing so. She knows when it comes to a color-ful, different side dish, her ice cream and jello mold is always a popular choice to include as part of a delicious meal or as a des-sert. “This recipe has been a family tradition for many years and was passed down to me by my mother, Dorothy. The very first time I made it was for a dinner party during Easter week in 1973. That year my husband, George and I were newly married, so not only is it a fam-ily favorite, this recipe has sentimental value for us, too. I make this recipe for many different holidays and change the colors of the jello to be appropriate for each holiday. For example, on July Fourth, I use cherry red jello, unflavoredwhite gelatin and berry blue jello with the vanilla ice cream. Years ago, for ourson Elliot’s college graduation, I even made this recipe in green and gold, his college school colors. It’s an easy, fun recipe that most everyone loves!”

Ingredients 1 3-oz. package lime jello (or color of your choice)1 3-oz. package orange jello (or color of your choice)Half gallon vanilla ice cream, divided into 4 equal parts1 3-oz. package raspberry jello (or color of your choice)1 3-oz. package lemon jello

Our sweet Basset Hound, Sadie, has been part of our

family for 13 ½ years and was the perfect choice for us. One of our daughters had been begging for a dog and we wanted a gentle pet that was good with children.

Sadie was a darling puppy with the longest ears in her litter and the first time we saw her it was love at first sight! She was energetic, loving and has always been a part of our family life and our two daughter’s milestones. She was at our feet as prom and graduation photos were taken, for family holiday and pool parties, on family camping trips and “supervised” us as we did our daily chores. She has truly lived up to the Basset Hound’s reputation for loyalty and has given all of us unconditional love.

Our daughters, Cara, 27, and Christa, 25, have grown up and moved away and our old Sadie girl is showing the signs of old age. Our long walks are now replaced with shorter ones. Our formerly redheaded Basset is now gray. Some days she moves slowly and stiffly; other days she still scampers like a pup. But she still always shows excitement when our daughters are home to visit and still wants to be in the center of our family activity. She has had a longer than average life for a Basset Hound and we are grateful to have her. She makes our house a home!

Porter and Keelan are growing up as true cultured adventur-ers! One of their favorite pastimes is skiing with their fam-

ily at Heavenly, Lake Tahoe, each spring break with mom, Leah and dad, Porter. They can also call themselves accomplished wranglers! They have penned cattle and looped horses on long day trails out in the hot desert sun. As they can attest to, Ari-zona is truly a place for cowboys!

The brothers play team sports in the area such as baseball with Chandler National Little League, flag football with I-9, and swimming with Rio club swim. They are both pianists and Por-ter has begun guitar. Porter is also beginning acting and singing for a local theatre company and Keelan is a wonderful artist and continues to create in his art lessons.

The boys enjoy hiking and taking in Arizona’s beautiful scenery with their parents and their dogs, Casey and Cody, every Sun-day. The family has a true love of the outdoors and the boys are more than excited to go ride their quads and motorcycles, and go camping. There is no end to the fun in nature, and Arizona offers a climate and terrain to keep the boys busy!

Both boys earn straight A’s at Jacobson Elementary. Porter has received awards each report card for principals list and honor roll. Porter was also one the first children in his school to receive an award for the millionaires club, reading over a million words. Kee-lan receives many accolades from his teachers for his leadership in the classroom. He has also received outstanding character awards.

There is an ongoing debate in education today surrounding which forms of learning benefit children most in terms of

their long-term academic success. Is it rote learning, the memo-rization through repetition; or is it the culturing of higher order

An Educational Perspective

The Roles of Rote and Higher Order Thinking for Children

By The Directors of New Vistas Center for Education

thinking skills, that is, cognitive processing using analysis, evalu-ation, judgment and logic? We firmly believe it is a balance of both. Swinging too far in either direction compromises over-all student success. In fact, the balance of both types of teaching is essential to each student’s ability to reach their true potential.Rote learning allows the accumulation of skills and data. Higher order reasoning enables the use of that information through process and participation. To exemplify this, we had a new stu-dent tested to assess her academic status. She was very adept at performing math problems in her head, a proficient use of higher order reasoning skills, but was unable to do the more challenging problems on paper. Her test scores indicated that she should have progressed more rapidly through her former curriculum. Fortunately, testing revealed the discrepancy. She had never been taught these skills. Now, with their introduc-tion, she is in a great place to make significant strides in aca-demic growth.

It is important to seek out teachers and schools that provide a balanced environment for learning. A mark of accelerated pre-schools, kindergartens and primary schools is that they encour-age children to learn and identify information. They then, teach their students to apply information in the form of concepts that are related to each other. This enables both early reading mas-tery and later, the grasping of complex mathematical concepts. It is an intellectually disciplined form of teaching that enables children to thrive academically. They have not only acquired knowledge but they also are now empowered to analyze, con-ceptualize, evaluate and synthesize knowledge: the goal of help-ing students reach their full potential.

Entrepreneur Dan Sleezer pursued a unique opportunity 4 years ago. Rising out of a sinking career, he decided to dive into the service industry with his name, an idea and his own two hands.

With over 500,000 pools in the Phoenix Metropolitan area, the unlimited net of opportunity the pool industry carries reeled Dan in. Past experience wet his feet for what it takes to fight the local economic currents and their harsh crash against local busi-nesses.

A family owned business, the strength of family and friends anchored Maddy’s through the rough waves and winds. Dan’s wife, Lisa soon jumped onboard to navigate the business inspired by the vision he cast.

Maddy’s Crew Does Business PersonallyBy Kari Sleezer

Unique among the trade, Maddy’s is a complete service craft. Featuring a retail store, weekly cleaning maintenance, repairs, remodeling and aide to the do-it-themselves consumers, the Sleezer’s sired a local business anomaly. Meeting actual needs in the valley, this pool service crew attends to the pool concerns of customers without creating them.

In 2010, Maddy’s received small business of the year award and is noted for their personal touch. The culture held on deck is to answer every phone call so consumers reach staff instead of machines. If in desperation to reach the owners, the company is structured for clients to easily contact Dan or Lisa. In fact, Dan regularly responds to customer needs himself. By choos-ing Maddy’s, clientele feel valued as the crew’s own family and experience a friendly, helpful vibe. If your pool is green don’t get mad, get Maddy’s by calling 480-840-6370.

The O’Dohertys know how to throw a party, and they know who to call to pre-pare and professionally serve-up excel-lence. Chef Bob and his creative cuisine was familiar to many of the evening’s resident diners. His services have been used with great satisfaction for client appreciation events, birthday & Super Bowl parties, cooking instruction, and even a son’s wedding. Others recognized Bob and his fare from his donations of time and service in support of our local public school teachers.

Personal ChefReviewChef a GoGo: Residents Rave

Diners placed a high importance on pre-sentation “and this was awesome.” Bob was at home in the environment and everything was “exquisite and artfully done.” As with his cooking, the display was creative and artistic. Guests appre-ciated Bob’s passion for his work which shined as he described his creations to the audience.

The guests delighted in the feast, going up for seconds and even thirds.“The food was as beautiful tasting as it was to look at.”“Simple, easy, delicious, fulfilling and per-fect”“Extremely flavorful, original, great flavor combinations” “I dream about Bob’s vegetables.”

I attended Seton Catholic High School my freshman and part of sophomore year. We were 4A-II State Champions and 4A-II East Sky Region Champions my freshman year. I was also awarded 4A-II East Sky Region Honorable Mention.

I transferred to Chandler midway my sophomore year and I had to sit out. However, I continued to work on my skills during that three month break. My junior year, I began playing again and was named 5A-I Fiesta All Region 1st Team for DP/Flex and 5A All Region Honorable Mention. I have been an AIA Scholar Athlete for 2009 and 2011. I am an active member of the National Honor Society and I hold a 4.1 GPA. I have overcome many injuries ranging from sprains to muscle tears. My most serious injury was a hamstring tear which took me off the field for almost a year; however, I believe that bat-tling through recovery to return to the field, has made me a much stronger person and has opened my eyes to the impor-tance of prevention. My injuries have driven me to want to suc-ceed and improve on my abilities.

I plan on attending ASU and focusing my efforts in my stud-ies in hope of becoming a veterinarian. My passion for animals may also lead me to study law regarding animal abuse. I will be interning at a vet hospital after graduation to get a better grasp on what I want to do in the future.

Softball is my outlet for relieving stress. When I’m on the field my mind is clear and focused; there is noth-ing that could bring me down. It is just my sport and I. I’ve played softball for 10 years and have been in Club for 7. I am mainly a pitcher and 1st basemen; however, my coaches would consider me a utility player.
