�e new Broadmeadows leisure centre has o�cially opened, with a splash.

A�er a plaque was unveiled last Wednesday, Hume mayor Adem Atmaca and councillor Geo� Porter dived into the new 50-metre indoor pool with as much enthusiasm as the children splashing around in lane one.

�e centre’s opening comes as a relief to councillors. Construction was suspended when builder Walton Constructions went into liquidation, delaying works for about six months.

Cr Atmaca said construction at the Tanderrum Way site took about a year-and-a-half and “was not without a few speed humps along the way”.

“�is facility will get kids away from the Xbox and into the pool and give young people in Hume the opportunity to be champion swimmers,” he said.

About 40 council sta�, dignitaries and media gathered to witness the unveiling of the plaque by Cr Atmaca and Broadmeadows state MP Frank McGuire.

Mr McGuire reminisced about scorching summer days spent at the Broady baths, as the old outdoor pool was then known.

“�e old pool was the place everyone escaped to,” Mr McGuire said.

“Before closing time, everyone would do bombs o� the edge before being kicked out by caretaker Jack Gulliver.”

But the local MP declined to take up Cr Atmaca’s o�er of a freestyle race, promising to make a splash at a later date.

�e old and now derelict Broady baths in Goulburn Street had became �nancially unviable and closed in 2007.

�e outdoor pool was open only from January to March. It closed at the end of February 2007 during the drought when it was found to be leaking 30,000 litres of water a day and was unable to meet stage 3 water-saving targets.

Cr Porter worked at the outdoor pool part-time for about 20 years and was thrilled that Broadmeadows had its own pool again.

“It le� a big hole in the community when the pool closed,” he said. “We had to cut the ties and build something bigger, better and newer.”

�e $13.23 million indoor centre features a 50-metre pool with eight swimming lanes, new change rooms, seating for up to 400 people, a childcare centre, an outdoor lawn and a new gym.

It opened earlier this month.

Bridge Inn Road motorists are set for a reprieve from gridlock when temporary tra�c lights are recon�gured to cope with peak hour tra�c.

Earlier this month, tra�c lights on Bridge Inn Road near Sackville Street were blamed for a spike in peak hour tra�c congestion at Mernda.

A building contractor in the process of upgrading the intersection installed temporary tra�c lights on February 4, a week a�er students returned to school and many parents resumed work.

�e tra�c lights then caused signi�cant delays, with some motorists complaining about waiting 15 minutes to get through the intersection well before 7am.

Patriece Paxinos wrote on Whittlesea council’s Facebook page that on one morning tra�c was banked up for 200 metres as early as 6am.

Another motorist complained that she waited 20 minutes at 5pm before being able to pass through the intersection.

A�er �elding many complaints, Whittlesea council worked with the contractor to alleviate tra�c congestion and dust in surrounding streets.

�e council asked the developer to provide longer green-light cycles during peak hour to allow more tra�c to pass through the intersection, and to continue monitoring tra�c conditions to see if the “green time” needed to be increased further. �e road works are expected to be �nished by March 14.

Traf�c lights �xed for peak

A record number of students from a Broadmeadows high school are going to uni.

More than half the Hume Central Secondary College’s class of 2014 were accepted into their preferred university courses.

Fi�y-four per cent were o�ered �rst-round places and 97 per cent were o�ered post- secondary education at a TAFE or other vocational college.

Five students received ATAR scores over 90 and one topped the state with a perfect score of 50 in VCE information technology.

Principal Glenn Proctor said the students’ results were the strongest in the government college’s six-year history.

He said this year’s university o�ers were triple the number received when he started at the school in 2008.

“It’s a testament to the hard work of all our students and teachers and their strong belief in their ability to pursue their dreams,” he said.

“Many of these students will be the �rst in their families to receive a tertiary education.”

Assistant principal Lisa Robinson said a partnership with Scotch College in Hawthorn helped the students prepare for their end-of- year exams.

Hume Central liaised with Scotch teachers and took the 20 top-performing students to Hawthorn for maths, English and psychology.

Nathan Baddawi, who was o�ered a place to study biomedicine at the University of Melbourne, said his ATAR score had opened up a world of opportunity.

“Nothing can hold me back now in achieving a career and a future I’ve dreamed of,” he said.

Another student, Kim Vo, was accepted into commerce at Melbourne Uni, which has one of the highest ATAR requirements in Victoria.

A notoriously dangerous stretch of road at Mickleham is set for an upgrade.

Yuroke MP Ros Spence says $5 million will be spent making Mickleham Road safer for motorists.

Wire rope safety barriers and a guard fence will be installed along a 13-kilometre stretch of the road through Mickleham, Greenvale and Craigieburn.

�e speed limit will also be reduced from 100 to 80 kilometres per hour.

VicRoads statistics show that in the �ve years to June 2013, there were 27 casualty crashes along this section of road, 13 of which were run-o�-the-road crashes, six resulting in serious injury.

�e roundabout at the intersection of Mickleham and Craigieburn roads will also be upgraded. Lighting will be improved, the road’s centre and edge lines will be made more prominent, and roadside hazards, such as trees and drains, will be removed.

Funding will come from the Safe System Road Infrastructure Program, via the Transport Accident Commission.

Ms Spence says the project is expected to start late this year and take about nine months.

Together with seven neighbouring northern councils, Hume council is lobbying the Victorian and federal governments to fund the duplication of Mickleham Road between Somerton and Craigieburn roads by 2021. �e councils also want a new lane on Mickleham Road before 2031.

Works plan for dangerous road

Motorists are again calling for a deadly road between Bulla and Melbourne Airport to be duplicated a�er VicRoads moved to reduce speeds by 20km/h.

A new 80km/h limit on the 4.6-kilometre section of Sunbury Road between the Tullamarine Freeway and Wildwood Road will come into e�ect next Monday.

But long-time Sunbury resident Hector Bugeja said reducing speed was a “cheap” solution to a problem that should have been dealt with several years ago. ‘‘It’s become a major thoroughfare and I would have thought that they’d be investing in other measures by now,’’ Mr Bugeja said.

‘‘Planners have had their heads in the sand for a while. How low do they go? Do they then reduce it to 60km/h in a few years?’’

�e undivided rural road, which is used by 26,000 vehicles a day, has a history of bad crashes.

VicRoads �gures show there were 12 casualty crashes, including one fatality and seven serious injuries, in the �ve years to last June 30. Two people died in a crash involving three vehicles in July last year.

Duplication of Sunbury Road by 2021 was high on a wishlist released by Hume council in the lead-up to last November’s state election.

Sunbury-based councillor Ann Potter said that while she understood VicRoads’ approach, she was disappointed the duplication of the road had yet to be announced.

‘‘Obviously, it’s a massive project, but I hope that plans for the road to be duplicated are in the pipeline somewhere,’’ she said.

VicRoads regional director Adam Maguire said police and the council supported the decision to reduce speeds.

He said the lower limit would give drivers more time to react to changing conditions.

‘‘Reducing the speed limit to 80km/h will improve safety by lowering the risk and severity of crashes,’’ Mr Maguire said.

‘‘�e new limit will also make it easier

for drivers to transition to the 60km/hspeed zone on Sunbury Road west of Wildwood Road.’’

A VicRoads spokesman said there were no immediate plans to duplicate the road.

Ford will shi� more than 200 employees from Broadmeadows to a new base at Richmond.

�e company announced on Tuesday it would establish a new national sales o�ce closer to the city.

Contracts have been signed for o�ce space near the Richmond Ikea store for marketing, sales and services sta� “to capitalise on the area’s vibrancy and related employee satisfaction bene�ts,” a company spokesman said.

�e company also announced it would continue to invest in Broadmeadows by refurbishing its head o�ce. �e building will be transformed into a product development campus for Ford’s engineering team.

“�e transformation of Ford’s head o�ce into the Asia-Paci�c Engineering Centre will signal that we will be the only company that can fully develop vehicles in Australia,” Ford Australia president and chief executive Bob Graziano said.

�e move to Richmond will take place in the middle of the year.

A company statement said Ford planned to become Australia’s largest automotive company in Australia a�er 2017, with a 1500-strong workforce that will continue to design, engineer and test cars.

“Ford is investing heavily in innovation and our Australian team will be a key part of delivering even more advanced vehicles in the future as one of our four engineering centres of excellence globally,” Ford’s

Melbourne-based director of engineering and product development in the Asia Paci�c, Graydon Reitz, said.

“No other auto company is investing this heavily in Australia.”

Ford will invest $300 million in its Australian operations this year.

Calwell MP Maria Vamvakinou de�ected questions about Ford’s move away from Broadmeadows.

But she welcomed the company’s commitment to investing in its engineering facilities at the Sydney Road site.

“Australia’s auto industry is a great repository of technological capability and design skills that we must strive to retain,” Ms Vamvakinou said.

“Ford’s announcement highlights that the industry will continue.”

She said the future political debate would be around its size and the scope of its capabilities.

Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood said the sales, marketing and services sta� would move out of rented space at Broadmeadows.

He said the company was not selling any of its facilities at Broadmeadows as part of the Richmond move.

The Whittlesea City Athletics Centre team hopes to beat its effort of last year when it raised more than $6000. Debbie has been involved with the athletics club for more than 15 years since her two children, now 21 and 18, began training there in their prep years. The 54-year-old says a few club members have recently been diagnosed with cancer and her father is currently battling the disease, making the effort even more signi�cant. Dangerous overhead power lines at Whittlesea will go underground or be insulated to prevent them sparking bush�res.

A federally funded program will replace hundreds of low voltage, bare-wire private power lines in bush�re-prone areas, including Whittlesea.

�e $750 million program stems from the Bush�re Royal Commission, which recommended the progressive replacement of all 22-kilovolt distribution feeders, either with aerial bundled cable or underground lines.

Whittlesea Lodge moved quickly to take up the federal government’s o�er and had a back-up generator installed last October.

State Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley has been working with government departments and power companies to determine country areas’ most bush�re-prone spots.

Landowners eligible for the funding must engage a contractor, secure the supplies and get the relevant local planning approvals.

Mindfulness, meditation and well-being are the themes of this year’s Tibetan New Year Festival at the Tibetan Buddhist Society’s base at Yuroke.

Festival organiser Wendy Milsom says Buddhism has taught mindfulness for more than 2500 years.

“More recently, Western psychology has integrated the mindfulness tradition into its own perspectives,” she said.

�e society has enlisted Dr Craig Hassed, of Monash University’s department of general practice, to speak at midday on the application

of holistic, integrative and mind-body medicine.

Teachers from Tibetan, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean Buddhist traditions will also lead meditations in the temple.

�ere will also be market stalls, books, and art and cra� stalls at the festival, which is at the Tibetan Society’s Peaceful Land of Joy Meditation Centre at 1425 Mickleham Road, Yuroke, from 9.30am to 5pm on the weekend of February 28-March 1.

Greenvale Kangaroos’s post-Christmas season improvement came to a screeching halt in Premier Cricket on Saturday.

A�er winning two matches and being competitive in the others since resuming from the break, the Kangaroos reverted to their bad habits against Melbourne Uni.

“It was a very poor day,” Kangaroos coach Steve Maddocks said.

“We started good and then it went downhill.“I felt during the week they were a bit o� the

boil and [it] seems a few are ready for the season to be over.”

Seven balls before lunch, and at 2-118, the Kangaroos appeared to be in the box seat.

“�en Tony Ura, who had played really well,

played a bad shot, Dale McDonald went out three balls later and we went to lunch at 4-118,” Maddocks said.

“Instead of having two set batsmen we had two new batsmen and we never recovered.

“It’s our worst performance since Christmas.”

�e Kangaroos were all out for 170 and Melbourne Uni reached 1-103 in reply by stumps on day one.

Maddocks said the key to having any chance on day two of the match was creating chances.

“We didn’t create any chances,” he said.“But the game isn’t over. We need to learn to

be patient, which is what we haven’t been when we need to be.”

For Maddocks and the Kangaroos this weekend is the last one in a tough and long

season, which has resulted in a total of 12 wins across four premier sides.

“Twelve wins is pretty poor,” Maddocks said. “We have been in positions to win and we haven’t known how to get across the line.

“I think we are ahead of last year [when they also won 12 games] but you’ll struggle losing nine out of the �rst 11.

“We haven’t had the players to step up and it will take time for the club to develop.”

Maddocks said the development of captain James Lidgett was one of the major positives to come out of the season.

“James is pretty stoic and has done pretty good in role handed to him as a 19-year-old,” he said.

“I hope it stands him in good stead for the future.”

It may be early days but the formation of Roxburgh Park’s new girls’ football team already has players and parents smiling.

Half a dozen girls turned out for the side’s �rst training session two weeks ago and they are now trying to recruit their friends.

Wayne Capuano, previously the Magpies’ junior co-ordinator, has been given the role of setting up the team.

“I noticed a lot of other clubs were having girls teams,” Capuano said. “I suggested to the club we go down that path and they put me in charge.”

�e club wants to play in the Essendon District Football League’s youth girls competition.

Kristy Dickson, who has played in the Victorian Women’s Football League, has been appointed coach.

“It was very positive and the girls are excited about it all,” Capuano said. “�ey’re working on their friends to try to get a whole complement of players.”

Parents are already showing a good interest in the team.

“When the boys train, parents mostly drop them o� and then come back to pick them up,” he said. “Now they stay and watch the girls train.”

�e club will start with a youth girls side for players from 13-18, with the hope of expanding that in the future.

�e EDFL is also making a big focus on girls’ football this season, with a promotional video online encouraging girls to get involved.

Burnside Heights, East Keilor and Northern Saints are also looking at establishing girls’ teams, with 13 clubs looking to �eld sides in the under-13 and/or youth girls competitions.

�e youth girls competition normally plays on a Saturday morning.

Another week, another twist in the tale of the Sub-District cricket’s north-west division.

With two weeks until �nals, the make-up of the top six is anyone’s guess with each week throwing up surprise results.

Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows, Plenty Valley and Melton Lions have all been on top of the ladder at some point since Christmas, such is the closeness of the competition.

A�er being knocked o� the top by Kew the previous weekend, Roxburgh Park bounced back this week with 8-259 against Werribee, another team in the �nals mix.

Final six still wide opensaid it was a good toss to win and bat �rst. “It was a relatively good wicket with favourable conditions for the batsmen,” he said.

“We fell 20-30 short of what we wanted, with the innings tailing o� towards the end.”

�e innings hero was Mitch Strei�, who made his maiden First XI century, 114 not out.

�e Falcons may �nd themselves back on top at the end of this game.

Plenty Valley, now top of the ladder, has already conceded �rst innings points to Melton a�er batting �rst and being bowled out for 61, with �ve players making ducks.

When Melton replied, Sean Ayres took 6-10, including 5-0 at one stage, as the Lions declared at stumps at 9-78.

“We have to make sure we get a good result in our game,” Johnstone said.

“With Melton taking the six points, they and Plenty Valley are on 51 points and we’re on 49.

“It’ll be interesting to see how Plenty Valley approaches the game and whether they risk losing outright in trying to get the win themselves.

“We’re absolutely looking at getting a top-two spot. If you can get a home �nal and second chance it gives you some security.”

�e Falcons face Sunshine in a one-day game in the last match of the regular season.

“From teams from 11th it is very competitive,” Johnstone said. “If you don’t come out and play you will be found out.”
