PHOTO: ASTRID FEBRUARIE ARDERNE GARDENS New digs for group ASTRID FEBRUARIE @FebAstrid F riends of the Arderne Gardens (Fotag) claim they have been given notice to va- cate the nursery amid concerns that a move may effect their work. Francois Krige, chairperson of the organi- sation, says this decision by the City of Cape Town Parks Department has put them in a difficult situation. According to Krige, the City has given them until the end of June to move from the facility. However, councillor Belinda Walker, Mayoral Committee Member for the City’s Community Services and Special Projects, says Fotag has not been given notice to va- cate the premises. She says the notice was given to Krige in his capacity as owner of Krige Tree Services. “Krige, however, also chairs the Fotag group and now feels that him moving affects the way the friends group will operate. He has no formal lease with the City and has been occupying the space free of charge in lieu of services rendered for more than 14 years,” she says. Walker says notice was given to Krige in July last year. Krige says he accepts his notice, but that the Friends “were told in a meeting on Tues- day 20 January to vacate the nursery and storage facility at the gardens”. Walker says Fotag does not require per- manent space and it was agreed at a meeting that, if needed, the City will provide space for staff and the storage of certain equip- ment as and when needed. “The department has provided nursery space at its Newlands facility for Fotag to store and distribute plants. Currently this space is not utilised. We propose that in fu- ture the organisation makes use of this area at our Newlands Nursery and that if plants are required to be transported, this be ar- ranged via the City Parks official on site,” she explains. Walker explains that the City Parks de- partment has to reduce its operational costs by reducing the number of depots from which it operates. “The plan is to move the staff from the Palmboom Depot to the Arderne Gardens as they service the Claremont area. The Palm- boom Depot is required to meet other City needs. We are trying to accommodate all staff in City-owned facilities thereby reduc- ing the use of privately-owned facilities. This will help to reduce operational costs,” she says. However, Krige says, this move to New- lands Forest would make it difficult for them to carry out their responsibilities. “We are grateful for the opportunity to move the nursery to the forest. However, we will be extremely far from the garden we care for,” he says. The nursery has been around for many years, he says, but fell into disuse. “The nursery is full of plants, many of which are rare. Some of the plants were do- nated while many others were collected throughout the years from different sources. It is the perfect environment for the plants,” he says. Walker says Fotag can continue with their work in partnership with the City Parks de- partment. “We welcome and are apprecia- tive of such partnerships with organisations that help to maintain our parks and gar- dens”. “No other ‘friends’ groups physically oc- cupy space on a permanent basis at a City facility where they assist with maintenance. Walker reiterated that Fotag is not being moved. “We acknowledge the contributions made by Fotag over the years. It is our inten- tion to carry on building on the gains made by both parties, in the quest for service ex- cellence. We will continue to support the Fot- ag group,” Walker says.

Home birth explainedMONIQUE DUVAL

@monique_duval

You’re pregnant. For many women these two wordscould send shock waves throughout their bodies.

While some may be happy and ready to becomea mom, others may feel anxious and worried.

With a flurry of emotions – whether you are happyor sad, excited or anxious – all pregnant women willhave to figure out a birth plan.

But as medical costs continue to rise, many womenare exploring their options including having their ba-bies at home.

Later this week a group of expecting moms, coupledwith midwives, birth experts and partners will gatherin Muizenberg to discuss issues around home birthing. The informal event will be hosted by Home Birth SouthAfrica in Muizenberg.

Early beginningsIn 2010, while working as doulas Lana Petersen and

Ruth Ehrhardt became frustrated with not being ableto provide information on home births to expectingmoms.

A doula is a woman who offers continual emotionaland physical support to a labouring woman (and herpartner).

Together they decided to start hosting home birthgatherings where doulas, midwives and interested par-ties sat together and shared their stories. Home BirthSouth Africa was formed and a website with every-thing expecting parents need to know created.

Here women share their stories and photographs ofhome birth.

MisconceptionsSafety, cleanliness and complications are some of the

main issues faced by Home Birth South Africa.Petersen explains despite a long history of home

births across the world, with modern-day medical pro-cedures, many still perceived giving birth to be a medi-

cal procedure. She says birth is a natural physiological process and

only requires medical intervention when there arecomplications.

Petersen explains in preparation for a home birth, the first step is for the mother to pick a caregiver.

“The midwife will then ensure the mother visits thehospital to ensure that a natural home birth is safe andthere are no complications.”

Throughout the pregnancy, the caregiver conductsregular check-ups and helps prepare women accord-ingly.

“Midwives are highly skilled and trained. They alsowork with back-up hospitals so in the case of emergen-cy they are equipped to assist.”

ChoicePetersen says the gatherings are held to help expect-

ing parents explore their options. She explains while they do not try and convince

moms to take the home birth option, they aim to pro-vide all the necessary information to ensure parentschoose a birth plan that suits them.

“The one advantage is that because it’s your home, you are not bound by hospital protocols. Here the momcan decide who she wants to have around her and sheis not surrounded by strangers,” she adds.

The gathering will take place on Sunday 1 Marchat 18 Axminster Road, Muizenberg from 14:00 to16:00.

The gathering is aimed at those who have given birthat home, for those who have wanted home births, forthose who are planning a home birth or are thinkingabout it or are just curious.

It is also for those whose home births did not go asthey had wished.

Midwives and doulas are also welcome.Entry is R60 per person or R100 for two people.

Woman jumps out of taxiASTRID FEBRUARIE

@FebAstrid

A taxi robbery and cigarette vehicleheist are among the crimes the Clare-mont police cluster has had to content

with over the past week.Police also warned the public not to make

false statements under oath as this wouldlead to perjury charges. In the most recent incident, a woman was

injured when she jumped out of a taxi aftershe was robbed in Rondebosch. The incident occurred on Tuesday 17 Feb-

ruary about 05:45. Rondebosch police offi-cers were travelling along Main Road inClaremont when they were approached byapasserbywho informed themthat awomaninawhiteToyota taxi hadbeenheard callingfor help.Claremont police cluster Captain Angie

Latchman says officers spotted the taxi driv-ing in the direction of Rondebosch and im-mediately gave chase.“As they approached the taxi they heard

a woman screaming for assistance, but thetaxi driver refused to stop and jumped fourtraffic lights,” she says. The taxi eventually stopped in Rondeb-

osch, Latchman continues, where the wom-an managed to jump out.“It is alleged the taxi driver reversed the

vehicle and in the process knocked over thewoman, injuring her legs,” she says. The officers managed to arrest the driver

and his guard.Latchman says initial investigations at

the scene established that the woman wasthreatened with a knife by the driver androbbed before the high-speed chase began. The victim was taken to hospital where

her condition is described as serious but sta-ble.The suspects were to appear in the Wyn-

bergMagistrate’s Court onThursday 19 Feb-ruary on charges of kidnapping, robberyand attempted murder. Police investiga-tions are continuing. In a separate incident the same day, staff

at the Scoin Shop in Cavendish Square wereheld up and robbed of an undisclosedamount. The incident occurred on Tuesday17 February at 12:05.Latchman says three unknown men – two

of whom were armed with firearms and onewith a knife – entered the store and held up

the staff.“The suspects then proceeded to rob the

store of an undisclosed amount of gold coinsas well as petty cash before fleeing from thescene in an SUV,” she says.Latchman says no one was injured during

the robbery and no shots were fired.“Police investigations are continuing,”

she says.Meanwhile, Rondebosch Police Station is-

sued a statement warning the communityagainst giving false statements under oath.Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam of Rondeb-

oschpolicewarns: “Youwill be chargedwithperjury if it is discovered that you were ly-ing.”The warning follows the arrest of a man

after he claimed to have been robbed of hisgunandvaluables at aRondebosch shoppingcentre. The 38-year-oldmanallegedlymade a false

statementwhileunder oath, claiminghehadbeen accosted in the underground parkingat RiversideMall on Tuesday 10 February at16:00.Sisam says the man reported that he was

getting into his vehicle when two suspectsapproached him with a firearm.“He alleged that they pointed a gun at him,

searched his vehicle and took his laptop, ex-ternal hard drive and his firearm. [Heclaimed they] jumped into anunknownvehi-cle and drove away,” Sisam says. However, during the investigating by De-

tective Sergeant Marlon Marais it was dis-covered that the complainant had fabricatedthe story after losing his firearm elsewhere.“Good investigation by the detective

proved the story to be false,” Sisam says. The man was arrested and detained at

Rondebosch Police Station on a perjurycharge and has appeared in the WynbergMagistrate’s Court.Meanwhile, police successfully arrested

two suspects connected to a cigarette vehicleheist in Mowbray. The robbery took place on the corners of

Durban and Raapenberg roads about 09:15on Monday 16 February.Followingup on leads obtained fromvideo

footage as well as initial investigation intothe incident, two of the suspectswere arrest-ed the next day (Tuesday 17 February) inPinelands. The provincial police’s TrioCrime Detectives Unit and the Flying Squadmade the arrest.

The Claremont police cluster logged several arrests in the past week and police have alsoissued a stern warning to anyone attempting to lay false charges while under oath.

the Friends of Valkenberg Trust, says thesalon has been “a vibrant service” at thehospital for 15 years. But now they are inneed of more volunteers.“All the volunteers have hairdressing

skills and offer their services free of chargeto the patients at the hospital,” she says. There are currently only two volunteers

at the salon.“We call on anyone with hairdressing

skills to assist us – even if they are willingto wash hair that would be of great help tous,” she says.Thevolunteerswouldneed tobeavailable

teers and are in urgent need of new peopleto help out on a Wednesday morning,” shesays. They are calling on people with hair-

dressing skillswhoarewilling towashhair, chat to the patients and encourage the train-ees aswell as the patientswhom they assist.Matthew says the salon also started a

training project last year where the leadvolunteer trains in-patients and out-pa-tients in barber and styling skills.“We are of the view that this training pro-

gramme will make the patients more mar-ketable when they have completed their re-covery period at the hospital. They can thentake their skills and knowledge back totheir communities and implement themthere,” she says. The trainees help out in the salon as vol-

unteers as well.Matthew says they are also in need of

tools to help launch the careers of the train-ees as once they leave they have completedthe programme.“We want to give the trainees, once they

have graduated, the tools to start theirworkat home. These tools include clippers, a pairof scissors as well as an apron and a signwhich they can put up at their premises,”she says.Anyone interested in volunteering or do-

STANHOPE BRIDGE

Creating jobsASTRID FEBRUARIE

@FebAstrid

Agarden established along the Stan-hope Bridge in Claremont is givingpeople the opportunity to give back.

The garden was established by the Clare-mont Community Improvement DistrictCompany(CIDC) and the City of Cape Townand was opened in 2006 along the rail re-serve.

Over the years, it has been maintained bythe CIDC, the City and Straatwerk, an orga-nisation which provides work for homelesspeople.

However, in an effort to stop vagrancy atthe garden the Claremont CIDC is now look-ing to assist more homeless people in thehope of providing them with a better future.

CIDC executive manager Abdul Kerbelk-er says a number of homeless people weresleeping along the rail reserve and “they en-croach on this space, which is a danger forthemaswell as trespassingon railwayprop-erty”.

Kerbelker says the garden was funded aspart of the joint venture between the Cityand the CIDC. “It was decided that the railreserve would be best suited for a gardenwhich formed part of the landscape archi-tecture ofClaremontBoulevard and its inte-gration with the upgraded Public Transport

Interchange,” explains Kerbelker. He adds the garden is a water-wise indige-

nous garden with trees and shrubs whichneed little attention and watering through-out the year.

“Due to the nature of the garden and theplants the need for irrigation has been re-moved, therefore there is minimal mainte-nance work to be carried out,” he says.

Straatwerk, which employees homelesspeople, are on occasion responsible forcleaning up the space.

This includes picking up litter and sweep-ing the sidewalks.

Kerbelker explains that establishing thisgarden project forms part of the organisa-tion’s social programme to provide oppor-tunities for homeless people in the commu-nity and surrounds, which is why theyhave established the partnership withStraatwerk, he says.

“We have opportunities for homeless peo-ple to work in the Claremont CBD which isoffered to them as well as opportunities tomove off the streets into sheltered accom-modation,” he says.

Kerbelker adds that there are no plans atthis stage to expand the project to otherparts of Claremont. However, they will con-tinue to maintain the garden along Stan-hope Bridge in an effort to keep the spaceclean and to beautify the area.

PINELANDS

Chris is on the WergeLOUISA STEYL

@LouNotes

He just released his debut album andopened for James Blunt in Cape Town– all in the space of one month.

Considering he only really started playingmusic professionally about two years ago,Chris Werge might just be on his way to be-coming a household name.Right now though, the Pinelands resident

is concentrating on promoting his album,Exposure, whichhe launched at theRoxyRe-vue Bar last month.Chris describes his sound as “singer/

songwriter kind of music”.“If you like something like John Mayer,

Ed Sheeran, BenHoward, youmight like it.”He viewsmusic as an emotional outlet and

so his songs are all very honest stories abouthis own experiences.“My real hope is for people to be inspired

and encouraged by my music, that’s alwaysbeen the goal.”

CreativeThe 23-year-old has always been creative.

Before seriously looking at music, he stu-died industrial design. After four years ofstudying, he decided to take time and workon his dream of producing an album.Armed with 16 songs and encouragement

from his parents, Chris took out a loan andgot to work on his unreleased six-track EPcalled Hope. His parents helped put him in touch with

GrandWest’s entertainment manager, Ga-vin Taylor, who took him under his wingand put him in touch with vocal coach, BevScott-Brown.Gavin also got Chris his first official gig

at the Jackson Hall, which is where he metproducer Neil Benjamin.“He was kind of blown awaywithmy stuff

when he walked in,” Chris says. “I think hecould relate to the music.”

ExposureThe two started working on Exposure last

year, very slowly at first, justwork shoppingand tracking Chris’ songs.Neil brought in bassist Rob Nel and drum-

mer Werner Von Waltsleben. Although Robhad to pull out of the project, hewas replacedby Shaun Johannes, whose Loevenstein stu-

dio, Mahogany Recording Studio, was usedfor pre-production work on the album.“It’s quite a hard processwhen your songs

are getting moved around or changed; it’s li-ke your baby.”But Chris says when he listens back to his

songs now he can hear how important it isto have a producer and how his songs nowhave better structure. The final productwas recordedatThunda-

bird Studios, where he also hired string andbrass arranger, Lynne Poulsen, who can al-so be heard playing piano on the album.

EmotionalChris describes the recording process as

tiring. “It’s emotional; you are pouring yourheart out in songs.” He says it was a bit ofa struggle to find a balance between soun-ding the best he can and maintaining theemotion of the song.“I’m proud of the work I’ve done,” he says

of the 11-month project.Chris hopes to have hismusic on local air-

waves in coming months, but the album isavailable online and at his shows. His plan for the next couple of months is

to play as many shows as possible, record amusic video, promote his album and startworking on songs and the capital for his nextalbum.“With every album you learn for the next

album.”If he isn’t too busy with music, he also li-

kes to use his industrial design qualificati-ons and possibly do more television ads liketheEuropeanadhe recently shot forNutella. For now, music lovers can visit

www.chriswerge.com for more about Chris, links to his social media profiles and to buyExposure.

to extend our trail run offering for a while, especially considering the popularity ofthe Old Mutual Two Oceans Trail Runsthat take place on Good Friday, and thelimited number of runners we can takethrough theTableMountainNational Parkon the day,” says Carol Vosloo, GeneralManager of the Two Oceans MarathonNPC. “It is therefore thrilling to be able togive our runners another day of quality

at the Lion’s Den at the old zoo by theRhodes Memorial. The 22 km runwill follow the same route

as its Easter Weekend counterpart, whileThe Beast will explore the various contourpaths of Devil’s Peak, Kloof Nek and thePipe Track, and ultimately summit Ma-clear’s Beacon before descending thetreacherous Nursery Ravine and return-ing to the finish via Newlands Forest.V For more information, visit www.twooceansmara-thon.org.za.

UCT graduate changed rugbyFew people are able to say they have helpedto change the way rugby is played aroundthe world. But this is something University of Cape

Town PhD graduate Dr James Craig Browncan say with confidence.Brown’s thesis evaluates the effectiveness

of the BokSmart programme, a nationwideinjury-prevention programme for rugbylaunched in 2009 by theSouthAfricanRugbyUnion (SARU). The programme aims to re-duce the incidents of rugby-related cata-strophic head and neck injuries.Through his research Brown, who gradu-

ated with a PhD in December 2014, foundthat the scrum engagement sequence in rug-by was dangerous and needed to be adaptedto improve the safety of the players. His research helped to contribute to a new

“crouch, bind, set” sequence in rugby whensetting the scrum, as opposed to theprevious“crouch, touch, set” sequence.SARU first announced this change at

school and amateur rugby level in 2013.“The rest of the world followed SARU’s

lead six months later,” says Brown.Based on Brown and his team’s identifica-

tion of the most common injuries at the an-nual SARU youth weeks, the SARU medicaldepartment also drafted a “minimum safetystandards” document to make medical sup-port teams aware of the most likely injuriesto happen and matches.“Together with SARU’s medical depart-

ment,we developed a general rule to allocatethe number of medical doctors to tourna-ments based on the number of serious inju-ries permatch. This seemed to increasewiththe age of the attendees, so that the under-13tournament had the least serious injuries, and under-18 had the most serious.”Brown’s research found that BokSmart

was able to reduce catastrophic injuries injunior (school boy) players, but not senior(adult) players after its launch. The study also found that player behav-

iour had improved over this period.Wanting to complete a PhD that not only

providednovel information to theworld, butalso had a direct application and improvedrugby player safety, led Brown to the thesis,Safer rugby through BokSmart? Evaluationof a nationwide injury prevention pro-gramme for rugby union in South Africa.
