INTRODUCTION: Can we actually see in the dark? Do

these things really work? The answer is yes.

Literally allows one to see in the dark Originally developed for military use

Evolved from bulky optical instruments tolight weight gogglesWith proper night vision equipment, we can

visualize anything at a distance over 200yards on a moon-less cloudy night

    IMAGE ENHANCEMENT:

Employs collecting & amplifying lowerportion of infrared light spectrum

    Employs special tube called image

intesified tube & objective lens It has photo-cathode to convert phtons of

    light energy into electrons

    THERMAL IMAGING:

Employs special lens & phased array ofinfrared detector

Detector takes one-thirtieth of second to

create pattern called Thermogram Thermogram translated into electrical

impulses & sent to SPU circuit board

SPU connected to display unit where itappears as various colour

    TYPES:-

    Uncooled Imaging Devices:

most common typeinfrared detector element contained in a

unit that operates at room temperature

system is quiet & activates immediately

system is more durable & protectable fromrugged use

Cryogenically Cooled Devices:systems have elements sealed inside a

    container that cools below 32F(0C)

    incredible resolution & sensitivity

useful for detecting people or working innear absolute darkness

system can see a difference as small as0.2F from more than 1000 ft(300 m)away

    GENERATIONS:Four types of generations

    Generation 0Developed in earliest 1950s

    Based on image conversion

Requires a source of infrared lightmounted on or near the device toilluminate target area

It was the oldest type and now no more inuse

Low gain & less operating life

    Generation 1:Developed in 1960s

    Based on vacuum tube technology

Employs fibre optics plate & photo cathodetube

    Amplification: 1000

    Operating life: 2000 hrs

    Larger & heavier than succeedinggenerations

    Generation 2:Developed in 1970s

    one-quarter moon operation

    Amplification: 20,000Operating life: 2500 hrs

Eliminates the need of back-to-back tubes

    Multi alkali photo-cathode replaced with Ga-As photo-cathode

    Generation 3:Developed in 1990s

    Introduction of Ga-As photo-cathode & ion

barrier film on the MCPAmplification: 40,000

    Operating life: 10,000 hrs

Ion barrier film increases operating life of

    the tube to large extent
