The Local Lowdown….The city centre in Newport carries off the delicate balancing act between antiquity and vibrant modernity with some aplomb. The cathedral is perhaps the best example of the history of the place. A site of worship since the 6th century, the modern church dates back to the Norman period, and is well worth a visit for the first time visitor. To give the modern Newport experience some further historical perspective, head to Newport Museum and Art Gallery and get your fill of the archaeology, natural history, and social history of the area. Suitably clued up, you are free to experience Newport’s more 21st century attractions.
And what could be more evocative of 21st century Britain (and Britain throughout the ages for that matter) than a night of imbibing alcohol?! If you like your drinking accompanied by decent music, then Newport can deliver. Club-wise, your best bet is probably T.J.’s, where legend has it that Kurt Cobain of Nirvana proposed to Courtney Love. The venue played host to early gigs by such rock behemoths as Oasis, Manic Street Preachers, Green Day and Primal Scream, and is soaked in sweaty, intimate rock and roll authenticity. This place has formerly resided in FHM
Celtic Manor Resort in Newport will be the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup golf tournament. The five-star golf complex and conference resort is also home to the annual Wales Open, an integral part of the European PGA Tour.
magazine’s top 50 ‘Big Nights Out’ in the world. If live music by established acts is your thing, then Newport City Live Arena and Newport Centre can probably deliver the latest and greatest for you.
If, after a night of beer and bands you seek some sight seeing and fresh air to blow the cobwebs away, then get this trinity of corkers on your list. Newport Market, is a traditional indoor Victorian market, dating from 1854. A heady mix of sights and smells will greet you as you wander between the stalls of butchers, greengrocers, confectioners, coffee shops and much else. Treat yourself, go on. Then head for Newport Castle, on the banks of the River Usk, which has stood tall, and relatively intact, since the 14th century. A wander around its three tall towers will pass a pleasant hour or more. Finally, finish your day further along the Usk where you will find (and you really can’t miss it) the stunning Transporter Bridge. This Grade 1 listed structure is only one of eight bridges of this type in the world, and has become for many the most recognizable symbol of Newport.
Newport Market, a victorian treasure
