Organ Recital and Evensong - Our own Justin L. Addington will be playing an organ recital on Saturday, February 17th at 4:30 pm at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior across the street from St. John's. Following the recital, Justin and members of our Chancel Choir will participate in the service of Evensong. All are invited to attend this free event. Dear Friends in Christ, A few weeks ago, I gave two presentations about the organ restoration following the 9:00 am and 11:00 am services. This was a time for me to share with you a little about the organ’s history, the work that will be done during the restoration, and answer any questions that you may have. Both of these meetings were well attended and I am grateful for the excitement that seems to be surrounding this project. For those who were not able to attend, below is a recap of what I shared. The organ, original to the sanctuary, was built in 1924 by the M. P. Moller Organ Company. Major work was done in the 1970s during which some stops and a new console were added. More work was done in the 1990s including a new blower and releathering. Current problems of the organ include notes that do not work, unreliable controls, and air leaks. This restoration will mark the largest one in the organ’s history. As part of the restoration, the organ will be cleaned, rewired, portions of it revoiced, a new console added, as well as a few stops added. The total cost of the restoration is $250,000. A new instrument just like ours today would cost over $1 million. To date, over $80,000 has been contributed towards the project. The R.A. Colby Organ Company of Johnson City, TN will be doing the work. Colby is a leader in the industry for restoring historic instruments. Repair work on the organ will begin in February and continue through March. The new console will be installed sometime in the fall. We should only be without the organ in worship for one or two Sundays. The goal is to have the work complete in time for the organ and sanctuary’s 95 th anniversary. An organ committee is being formed to aid in the fundraising for this project. Anyone who would like to call and schedule a meeting with me to see some of the problems of the organ up close is welcome to do so. As we look toward the future, I want to ask that you consider helping us in the following ways. 1. Share the details of this project with others. If you have watched the church Facebook page, you know that we are creating weekly videos to keep you and others up-to-date with the project. Let other family and friends in the church and community know about this endeavor. Let the community know that music is an important aspect of the worship life of our church. Through this project, we pray that those who may be searching for a church home with good music may come to know about us and our programs. 2. Give to this project. A gift to the organ fund above your pledge to the church budget is always appreciated. However, please know that family and friends may also contribute gifts in honor or in memory of loved ones. Watch for more information about fundraising details for this project. 3. Pray for this project. The work that we do now will have a lasting impact on the future generations of our church. Through our efforts now, this instrument will continue to herald the birth of the Christ child each Christmas, proclaim the resurrection each Easter morning, send the souls of our loved ones into eternal glory at funerals, offer fanfares at the weddings of our children, and sweetly sing at the baptisms of our grandchildren. Pray for how this organ will touch the lives of people now and in the years to come. As always, thank you for your support of the Music Ministry. It is a joy to serve with you. Shrove Tuesday Pancakes & Jazz Supper - February 13 Celebrate Mardi Gras St. John’s style on February 13, 5:45 to 7:00 p.m. in the St. John’s Center! Join us for a fun filled celebration leading into Lent. In addition to delicious pancakes, there will be live jazz music and crafts! Hosted by the New Beginnings Class. The

cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children. What is Shrove Tuesday? Shrove Tuesday is the day preceding Ash Wednesday and is celebrated in many countries by consuming pancakes. The expression "Shrove Tuesday" comes from the word shrive, meaning "confess". Shrove Tuesday is observed by many Christians who make a special point of self-examination, of considering what wrongs they need to repent, and what amendments of life or areas of spiritual growth they especially need to ask God's help in dealing with. Being the last day before the penitential season of Lent, indulging in food that one sacrifices for the upcoming forty days is associated with Shrove Tuesday celebrations, before commencing the fasting and religious obligations associated with Lent. The term Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

Beginning Mindfulness The Palmetto Peace Project will host a Mindfulness for Beginners program at St. John’s on Tuesdays, 12:30-1:30 p.m. This program will begin each first Tuesday of the month with an Introduction to Mindfulness presentation and continue each Tuesday following with an hour of guided meditation led by Ben Motley in room 310. Open to everyone. For more information contact Jenifer Crawford.

February Missions Focus: FOOD! Help us spread the love this month by donating non perishable food items to those in need. We will be collecting food in the Helping Hands Box outside of the church office.

Looking for a good place for lunch? Bethel UMC hosts a soup kitchen open to everyone with donations accepted, during lunch on Thursdays, January through March. Proceeds go to help various local missions. Consider eating there and helping your community. It’s delicious! Bethel is located 1232 Curtis Street in Rock Hill.

Delicious Missions Contribution Opportunity The Hwy 55 restaurant in Rock Hill will make a donation to St. John’s Missions Team for simply turning in customer receipts. Here’s how this works: When you eat at Hwy 55 (anytime or any day) save your receipts and turn them into Jenifer at St. John’s. We will return these receipts to Hwy 55 and they will donate back to us 15% of the amount on those receipts. It’s that simple! This gives Hwy 55 the chance to make a difference in our community and us the chance to support a business that wants to give back to their local church.

Hunger Outreach Meal Delivery: St. John’s delivers 225 meals to the needy in our community on the fourth Monday of each month. Thank you to the Wonderful Women’s class for fixing the meals each month! Our next delivery for Hunger Outreach is Monday, February 26 and volunteers are always needed. Meet at the church at the St. John's Center Kitchen at 5pm to load your car and get directions. For more information, contact Barb Flood at [email protected]

Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen Help - February 14 St. John’s is responsible for hosting lunch at Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen on the second Wednesday of each month. Volunteers are always needed to help serve in the Soup Kitchen on the 2nd Wednesday each month from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Contact Kimberly Case at 417-0555 or [email protected] if you would like to participate February 14 or any second Wednesday. Welcoming those in need: If you encounter someone who has come to St. John’s seeking financial assistance on Sunday mornings, please invite that person to stay and worship with us. You may also offer them a Hospitality Food Bag from our Welcome Desk or give them whatever food you can find from our Helping Hands Box, both in the lobby. However, we are not able to provide financial assistance on Sunday mornings due to our office being closed and our pastors and staff being obligated to their worship and Sunday School responsibilities. They are welcome to come back during the week when the office is open to meet with one of our pastors. We also have flyers available in the lobby listing the agencies that offer assistance and they may call 211 at anytime for more information. Run 4 Reading Race - March 3 Join us on March 3, at 8:00 a.m. for the Run 4 Reading Race. The run consists of a 4 mile loop beginning and ending at the downtown Rock Hill Fountain Park with a brief stroll through the campus of Winthrop University. If a 4 mile run is not your thing, grab some friends and join us for the Book Relay where four participants can run/walk 1 mile EACH and carry a children's book to the end of the course. Last but not least, if you can't get your sleepy head out of your bed, register to be a Sleep-In Supporter and still get the cool A4 Tek long-sleeved shirt! Proceeds from the race benefit The Early Learning Partnership. Registration Link: https://run4reading.racesonline.com/

Stephen Ministry Sunday on January 28th was a huge success. Pam Montgomery did a wonderful job delivering the message for the First Light and the 11:00 A.M. services. Pam lives in Raleigh North Carolina, and is on staff at the Stephen Ministries Headquarters in St. Louis Missouri. She travels extensively as a workshop presenter and Instructor for Stephen Ministry, Leaders Training courses. Also, she is on the consultation and research Staff for the ministry. The Stephen Ministry at St. John’s is currently celebrating its five-year anniversary. The

ministry is a vital part of the overall Christian care of our congregation. Stephen Ministers are members of St. John’s United Methodist Church who have been trained to provide confidential, one-on-one, Christian care to people who are going through a difficult time. They care by listening, supporting, encouraging, praying, being dependable and being trustworthy, and maintaining confidentiality in their care giving.

When "Pull Yourself Together" Doesn't Work - Grief, divorce, loneliness, hospitalization, job loss, or other life difficulties? You don't have to go through your struggles alone. When life is falling apart, help is available. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers who will walk with you, listen to you, and provide confidential one-to-one care as you search through the pieces and find what is truly in your heart.

Do You Know Someone Who is Hurting? You Can Play an Important Role - If you know of a member who is a friend, neighbor, co-worker, or relative who is going through a difficult time, talk with one of our Stephen Leaders. They can help you connect the person you know with a Stephen Minister who can provide focused care, encouragement, and support. Contact us (completely confidential): Pastor Rett, 803 327-3113, Lee Ann Livingston 803 984-0563, Ida Newson 803 981-2938 or Dave LeGrande 803 242-8618. you, I will help you, yes, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

We have The Upper Room daily devotional books available on the second floor just outside the sanctuary. Large print is $1 and small print is $.50. The Upper Room is a daily devotional magazine published in 33 languages and 100 countries around the world. The daily meditations are written by readers of the magazine and others interested in sharing their faith experiences through writing—both laity and clergy, published authors and new writers. The meditations are stories of real people working to live faithfully with the Bible as their touchstone. Every day, readers of The Upper Room around the world read the same story in many different languages and pray the same prayer together. Some of our readers share comments on their website (upperroom.org/devotionals), and some writers share extra pieces of their writing on our blog (upperroom.org/devotionals/blog-posts). When we went to press last month, our last Apportionment payment was in the mail to the SC

Conference. Unfortunately that check never made it to its destination and was returned to us

a week later. We were immediately in contact with the Conference, but were informed that

they could no longer accept apportionment payments for 2017. Accordingly, I regret to inform

you that we were only credited with paying 89% of our apportionments in 2017. Despite this

unfortunate turn of events, St. John’s still gave over $138,000 towards our apportionments and we look

forward to returning to the 100% mark for 2018.

The Finance Team meets again on February 13th when we will be busy reviewing financial results of 2017

and working on a 2018 budget. Please note that if you make your pledge payments online, it is possible

that you may need to set up your payment again for 2018.

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or

under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7, NIV) —Peyton Worley, Finance Team

SCAN TO GIVE! Or you can give online from http:/tinyurl.com/sjgive

As we begin the new year remember that you can give online using your debit or credit card. You can make a one time gift or set up a recurring gift. To give to the general church budget, if you made a pledge, choose "current pledges" in the fund selection drop down menu or choose "gifts and offerings" if you did not make a pledge for 2018. You can also give to several other funds and special offerings through the online giving portal. To get started visit http://www.stjohnsrh.org/#/home/give.

We are delighted to reintroduce you to our “Lovely Leah.”

Leah’s hometown is Martinsburg, West Virginia where

some of her family still reside. Growing up Leah was a

member of a local Methodist church where she also served

in the nursery. Later, Leah attended Loyola University in

Chicago, Illinois where she received a degree in Political

Science. In 2017, Leah officially became a member of our

Rock Hill community when she accepted a position as a

grant writer for the city.

We are so grateful that Leah’s fellow co-worker, Elizabeth

Morgan, invited Leah to try our wonderful church. Soon

after visiting St. John’s, Leah inquired about working in the

nursery. She was a perfect fit! Leah is one of our ladies

that is willing to serve wherever we need her the most that

Sunday. When asked why she enjoys serving in the

nursery Leah stated, “I love seeing how quickly all the kids

change and grow. Some of them have changed so much in

just the past year it's hard to believe!”

When Leah has some free time to herself, she loves

traveling to any beach at all, cooking, and reading. When

not working or traveling, she loves to spend time with her

immediate family, which include 3 furry babies, Luna, Bella,

and Lady. Leah loves coffee, her favorite color is purple,

and her favorite flower is the gerber daisy. A bible verse

that greatly speaks to her is Psalm 71:14, “As for me, I will

always have hope. I will praise you more and more.”

St. John’s United Methodist Church is grateful Leah feels

called to serve our children in the nursery every Sunday

Please feel to stop by the nursery to reintroduce yourself to

this lovable lady and to thank her for choosing to care for

our babies.
