Foreword

As-salaamu ‘Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuhu,

We praise Allah (swt) for there is no God but Him. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad, who was sent as a mercy to all of humanity, upon his family, companions and on all those who hold fast to the Deen, until the Day of Judgement.

It’s that time of year again when new and old students are back for another fun but testing year and your job starts now! The ISoc is one of the most crucial aspects of university life for a Muslim student - for some it even provides a home away from home - and it’s important that this relationship begins in the right way.

Whether students are starting or returning to university, they’re hit with many invitations to haraam, from pub crawls to clubbing nights, house and union parties and lured by societies that may not have the best impact on their lives. All this is usually just done to meet new people and make friends in a city full of strangers. But the ISoc is the perfect alternative; with opportunities for meeting amazing brothers and sisters (yourselves!) and attending ISoc organised entertaining activities, there should be plenty to keep Muslim students out of trouble.

This Guide has been put together by members of the Wales and West Regional Committee (FOSIS W+W), a part of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies (FOSIS). Wales and West is dedicated to offering grassroots support to Islamic societies. We hope that the guide will be of benefit to the ISoc committees.
