Thank you to the office team for ensuring the rollover of students and classes ran smoothly and to our staff and community for reassuring our students through the change. A list of staff and classes is set out below. Our Kindergarten students completing Best Start and off to a great start with their teacher and Year 6 leaders. Cooling Off Students had fun cooling off under sprinklers on a very hot Thursday in the first week back. Arrangements for Friday 8th February You may already be aware of the arrangements for Brody Hurst’s funeral and “The Celebration of Brody’s Life” this Friday, following the tragic loss that has touched our community in so many different ways. When: Friday 8 February, 10:30am Where: St Michael’s Anglican Church 35 Foamcrest Ave Newport followed by “A Celebration of Brody’s Life” at Newport Surf Life Saving Club. Dress: Summer/casual (no suits or ties) in keeping with a relaxed and casual vibe. Parking: Suggested parking at Newport Surf Club, a short, easy walk from the church. The majority of our school staff will be attending the funeral as well as “The Celebration of Brody’s Life.” Therefore, with the assistance of qualified staff from our neighbouring schools, supervision of students at Newport School on Friday will be provided, but the regular teaching and learning program will not be operating. 1

Principal’s Report

Dear Parents,

Welcome Back BBQ

Our Welcome Back BBQ will be celebrated on Friday 15February from 5-7pm. It is a great opportunity to spend just acouple of hours catching up with friends and for the children toget to know their new classmates.

Parent Information Evenings

For your information, please note the details for our up-coming“Parent Information” evenings which will be held from6-6.45pm in your child’s classroom.

If it is necessary for children to accompany parents, they areasked not to bring scooters, skateboards and bikes as it isdisruptive for the presentations happening in classrooms. Ihope that at least one parent from each family will be able toattend these information meetings.

Sport at Newport Presentation

To tie in with Parent Information Evenings, on Wednesday 20February from 6.45-7.15pm, Mr Moran will be presenting toparents on sport at Newport. The presentation will cover therole of the Sports Co-ordinator, selection processes,differences between PSSA, Zone, State KO and school sportopportunities and student sporting award criteria. Thepresentation is aimed to assist parents, particularly those whohave students who have just moved into Year 3 and are newto 3-6 sporting opportunities. The presentation will be held inthe first demountable classroom in the driveway on the Easternside.

Grade Planning

In week 3 all staff will be collaborating in grade teams, onstudent achievement data analysis, teaching/learning programsand planning for project based learning (PBL).

Welcome back to another big year of sport at Newport PublicSchool where we will aim to have a another successful yearinvolving as many students as possible.

All students will participate in their weekly PE lessons.

Years K-2 will focus on Gross Motor Movement,sportsmanship, taking turns, modified sports and games withan emphasis on fun and involvement.

Year 3-6 will focus on:

Term 1: Athletics, high jump, long jump, shot put,discus and the dreaded beep test.

Term 2: Gymnastics

Term 3 & 4: We do two to three weeks of skills, drills andmodified games for: cricket, netball, touchfooty, basketball, soccer, AFL and dance.

Students will have the opportunity to trial for PSSA teams overboth the Summer and Winter Competitions.

State Knockout Teams

Students in year five or six will have the opportunity to trialfor State Knockout Teams. Students in year four who play ata representative level and are invited by the coach are alsowelcome to trial.

Zone Trials

We can send 3 players to each zone trial, this will be basedon what the PE teacher and coaches see throughout the year.Students should be in year 5 or 6. If your child plays Golf,Tennis, or Basketball at a representative level could you pleasecome and talk to Mr Moran as these trials will be held in thenext few weeks.

Summer PSSA Trials

Trials for the Summer PSSA Competitions will be held duringthe afternoons (between lunch and 3.15pm) in the first weekof term. Those students who are away for trials will be giventhe opportunity to attend a training session which will beconsidered a trial.

There is a copy of the Sport Selection Policy included, pleasetake the time to read it as a lot of time and effort is put intomaking the trials as fair and equitable as possible.

The PSSA Competition will begin in week 4 February 22 andend in week 8 March 22.

Newport Swimming Carnival

The Newport Swimming Carnival will be held at the WarringahAquatic Centre on Tuesday 19 February. Please fill in thepermission notes and return with payment ASAP to the frontoffice. The Swimming Carnival is for those students in years3-6 who wish to swim in events.

Students turning 8 in year 2 can also attend and compete.When filling out the permission note, please enter your child inthe age races of the age they are turning in 2019. For example,if your child is turning 10 at any stage in 2019 from January toDecember, they compete in the 10 year old race.

The 100m Freestyle event is an open event, where studentsfrom all ages compete against each other. Students in youngeryears should be exceptional swimmers to compete in thisevent.

If you are able to help out with time keeping that would begreatly appreciated. No experience necessary. We try to makeshifts less than an hour where possible. Please indicate on thenote if you are able to help in the morning or afternoon.

Please put these dates in the diary for 2019. Students whoare absent for carnivals due to family holidays will not beconsidered for special entry at later carnivals.

School Shoe Drive

Last year, we began collecting pre-lovedschool shoes and runners in good conditionto send to Canley Heights Public School in western Sydney.Sometimes, students at this school don’t have shoes or need toshare shoes with their siblings. Knowing that our communityhave big hearts, we knew that we could help out. So, we willagain be collecting shoes and new pairs of socks in white orgrey to send to our friends at Canley Heights. Please bring theshoes to the office or to 3NE and we will box them up and sendthem to where they will be very welcome!

Music program 2019

We are very excited to be welcoming many new students intothe Newport Music program for 2019. It promises to be a greatyear of music ahead. Please feel free to stay and watch yourchildren when they rehearse and get involved in the running ofthe program by attending Music Committee meetings. The nextCommittee meeting will be held at 7pm on Tuesday 5 Feb inthe staff room and all are welcome.

Rehearsal timetable for 2019 and start dates

The timetable for rehearsals has been revised and is includedbelow for your reference. All ensembles except Stage Bandand V1s will be starting week 2. If your child is interested inauditioning for Stage Band, they can register their interest withBen Swatton, or contact him on [email protected]. V2families will be advised of class rooms asap. New TrainingBand students will be starting at 8 am on Tuesday in theCreative Space. They will be set up with new instruments duringrehearsals and learning some basics. Music Committee AGM 2018

The Music Committee AGM was held at the end of term 4,2018. Mel Cogan was re-elected as President, Claire Gormanas Secretary and Natalie Sampson as Treasurer.

Community News

Newport Rugby fields boys and girlsteams from 5 year olds to 18 year olds.The club has been running since 1963,and has over 500 players. (one of thelargest junior clubs in Australia).

Get active and join in the fun, great competition and thecommunity. There is lots in store this year starting withthe Sevens and Gala Day on Sunday 24 Feb.
