Welcome by Lee Woodland Neva Say Neva Hi everyone, I hope everyone has been having fun with there horses, I know I have been! Having nine horses it is very hard to divide your time, so I really enjoy it when I get a free day to go and pamper the horses. My daughter Breanna joined me and we gave each horse a good brush. . That reminds me of the book ‘Think Like A Pony’ by Lynn Henry. In here you get great pictures on what your horse or pony is trying to tell you. It is a fabulous easy to read book, not just for children but also for adults. The illustrations are fantastic. I really can’t speak highly enough about this book, the first time I read it I was thrilled that finally a book like this has been produced. Lynn Henry is also producing another book called Act Like A Pony, and I will be able to distribute this as well. I recently enjoyed a great day of trail riding with my friend Trish, we joined with the Morpeth Trail Riding Club for lovely local ride. Trish rode her lovely Arab, Sage and I took my (well okay Danny’s) horse, Mate. It was great to get out and just stroll along chatting to other horsey people, the scenery was really nice and it was a great day out. We have a few Trail Riding clubs in our area, and they all cater for different levels of riders. There are some clubs that like to really move along and there are others like the Morpeth club that just take it very steady. I can highly recommend this club. Trish rode Sage in a halter with the clip on sports reins and I rode in a bri- dle with horseman’s reins. We found them to be very welcoming. Well I am just getting ready to head off to the Cutting Camp at Braidwood with Richard Webb and Owen Gwinn. I am absolutely busting to get there! Enjoy this month’s newsletter! We need your help!! !

Page 2 Volume 1, Issue 5

On the 6th of October, a good friend and devoted Parelli follower Niki Davidson was killed in a car accident on her way to work leaving behind two gorgeous children and her two wonderful horses. I know that no matter what, Niki would want Parelli homes for her horses and so I thought I’d email you to see if you could help. She had a wee Standardbred mare called Bella, approx 15hh, 13 yrs but with plenty of life and energy. She is a dappely bay with white markings and very pretty. Niki didn't do a lot of riding as she had an accident a few years ago and was doing Parelli to build her confidence back. But Bella has been hacked out before Niki bought her and used to have a 12 year old girl ride her around the paddock bareback. She has been to one clinic where Russell Higgins was the Instructor and has had a bit of ground work done and never seemed to have any major issues with anything. Bella is being sold for $500 ono Harry was her pride and joy!! He is a black Standardbred geld-ing, approx 15.2hh and 7 yrs old. Harry has been to 3 clinics that I know of and Niki did in fact hack him out with me one day and he was just a trooper. He has done half of the level 1 tasks and has an amazing calm about him, even when Niki was stiff as a board on him, legs clenched tight he carried on as if he'd done it a million times. Harry is being sold for $800 ono

Both horses had there teeth done last year and have been naturally hoof trimmed. They both come with their covers. I would say that both Bella and Harry are green horses but have beautiful natures and were always trying when Niki played with them. There is also a practically new 17' wide Wintec saddle with interchangeable gullet, fully mounted with a short girth and girth cover bought a year ago for over $800 and only used a couple of times for sale for $500 Also a package including a Hackamore, Halter, 12 foot rope, 22 foot rope, carrot stick with savvy string and the Part-nership and Harmony pack for sale for $300.

All the money made from the sales will be going into an account for Niki's children Ben and Becky.

Please contact Leanne White in New Zealand

Phone number is (03) 248 6264 and my cell is 027 3598 690

This month I learnt that a lovely lady by the name of Niki Davidson from New Zealand passed away in a car accident. We would like to let her family and friends know that our thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time. Leanne has contacted us hoping that through this newsletter we can offer some help. We can do this in a couple of ways, pur-chasing the goods they have for sale or by donating money to the family. I have the bank details for one of Niki’s chil-dren. If you would like to make a donation please email me and I can forward on the bank details to you. Email– [email protected] Lets join together and offer our support!

On the road – The key to driving with your horses on is not slow, but smooth… Know where you are going and have plenty of time to get there. Practice driving smoothly when you aren’t towing. Allow greater distance for braking, and use your gears and trailer brakes more than your vehicle brakes. You should be able to activate your trailer brakes from the brake pedal, without applying the vehicle brakes, by lightly touching the brake pedal. Brake gently earlier, rather than harder and later – you should be just lifting your foot off the pedal as you approach rather than jamming it down! Keep your vehicle in its “rev range.” Every vehicle has a rev range where the engine is working at its best, and really pulls. For example, we have a 3.0 litre Turbo Diesel Navara, and it works best between 2500 and 4000 RPM. So when I am driving, I keep the engine working within this range - I change down a gear as the engine approaches 2500 RPM, and change up as it passes 4000. When I am traveling through speed zones, I am in a gear which al-lows that speed and is within that rev range. Towing in fifth gear (or “overdrive” for automatics) – As a general rule, particularly on the smaller vehicles, towing heavy loads in fifth gear is not recommended, as it increases the load on your vehicle’s engine and drive-train. You’re better off, and will use less fuel, if you tow in fourth gear (“Drive” on an automatic), and you won’t be chang-ing up and down gears all the time. Turning – The longer and wider your vehicle and trailer combination, the more you will have to allow when negotiat-ing corners, roundabouts, intersections etc, to avoid the inside wheels cutting the corner, hitting the curb or dropping off the road. A good way to remember is “Turn more later”. I find that if I have the outside wheels following the cen-tre line of the road, I don’t hit any thing! When you’re cornering, follow the outside of the corner – i.e. turning to the left, follow the centre line, turning to the right, follow the edge of the road. This probably goes against everything you were taught when learning to drive, so it may take some getting used to! But I watch my mirrors, see where the trailer wheels are sitting on the road, and then find some point on the vehicle that lines up with the centre line of the road, and keep this as a reference point. Pretty soon it will become second nature. In my vehicle, I find that if the driver side corner of the bull- bar is following the white line, then my trailer wheels are comfortably inside the centre line when turning left, and another point on the bull bar gives me my reference point to the outside of the road when turning right. Reversing – Everybody’s favourite! Ever wondered why someone reversing a 30 ft gooseneck seems to do it with ease, but someone else reversing a little two horse straight load float is all over the place? A few little tips:

· Small Trailer, small changes, big trailer, big changes. The longer the trailer, or more importantly, the greater the distance from the tow point to the trailer wheels, the more you have to turn the vehicle to move the trailer.

· Use your Mirrors! One of the simplest ways to learn to reverse is to use your mirrors. Place your hand on the centre bottom of the steering wheel, and watch your trailer in the mirrors. If you want the back of the trailer to go left, move your hand to the left. If you want it to go right, move your hand to the right. As soon as the trailer is pointing where you want, straighten up your wheels by moving your hand back to the centre. Remember this and you soon will be reversing with confidence.

· Watch your front, watch your rear. The longer a trailer is from the wheels to the back of the trailer, the more it will swing when you move the steering wheel. Watch the front of the trailer, learn to recognize when the trailer is about to jackknife – that is the drawbar is about to hit the vehicle. If in doubt, get out and have a look!

As with most things, use prior and proper preparation, and practice! Towing a trailer is no different. Spend some time on the road with your trailer without horses on board; learn where it sits on the road. Practice driving smoothly. Get out in a paddock and practice reversing your trailer between some witches hats, around corners, see how far you can reverse in a straight line . Much better to hit a witches hat than the shed, the car, or someone else’s float! The more calm and comfortable you can be with towing your horses, the more calm and comfortable your horses will be with being towed!

Knowing when to stop/quit is critical; otherwise the experience can be less than satisfactory. Picture this: You attend a party. There is lots of music, dancing, food and drink. As more and more guests arrive and settle in, the mood of the party livens up. They all get into the food, drink, and dancing, plus high-pitched con-versation over the ever-increasing din and merriment. (Because the DJ has to increase the volume of the music to overcome the increasing din of the conversation. Sort of like inflation and wages or a shouting argument.) More food appears and the booze seems to be endless and abundant quantities are consumed. At some stage the party reaches a ‘peak’. Most if not all the partygoers are having a really good time. If you or I were at the party, this point in the proceedings would/could be a really good time to leave. To quit. But how many of us would do that? There is still more food, booze, dancing, and people to catch up with. Without realizing it, after the party ‘peaks’ there is one way to go. Down. Things start to go off the rails. The good time begins to decline. The first negative emotional outburst is expressed and witnessed by bemused onlookers. Someone drops a full glass of red on the carpet. A plate of food is spilt and a halfhearted attempt is made to clean it up with the remnants on the floor being ground in and spread throughout the venue. Someone makes a pass at someone they shouldn’t have. The first chuckup is made in the toilet. And that’s only the beginning of the decline of the party. I could go on but I hope you get may drift. Leaving at the peak of the party would have been a good option unless one needs to see adults behaving badly. I witnessed a similar scenario the other day in a dressage arena. I came upon the scene just prior to the peak. The horse was moving freely, willingly, and from a dressage point of view, beautifully. He was young and willing. His human was observing this from the ground as another competent dressage rider rode this beautiful young horse through some nice movements and paces. It peaked. The ground-based observer was ecstatic, hardly able to con-tain herself witnessing what this horse and rider were displaying. I felt ‘now’ would be a great time to quit and mum-bled something about ‘when is it a good time to reward a horse?’ See I’m new with horses and my learning curve is very steep and my opinion base about something I know very little about is small. Or to put it another way, this horse was like a tube of toothpaste. When full, the toothpaste flows freely and with little effort, just like the horse’s willingness, ability and energy. But all of these are finite resources. As they get used up, the effort required to extract the desired amount has to increase. You know, things like folding the toothpaste tube or rolling it. More and more effort is needed to get the last bit out of the tube. One really has to push very hard with a thumb or finger right up into the outlet to get that ‘last’ bit out of the tube. Finally we give up, and dump the empty tube in the bin (or stable, and don’t get me started on that!) Toothpaste is put on the shopping list. The good thing though about horses, is that they are a self-renewing resource. The bad thing is that they remember being squeezed for that last bit of performance. Anyway, my comment about quitting was lost in the joy of the observer’s mood. Things went to pot from that point onwards. The horse up to this stage was complying really well with the requests being asked of him. ‘Is this what you want?’ ‘Am I doing OK Boss?’ ‘I am trying to be really good’. The only reward he got was to be asked for more. ‘Hey, I would like a break!’ ‘Not just yet we have more to do’ ‘But I just gave you the best I had’. ‘We can do some more other stuff’. ‘Bugger you mate, obviously I didn’t do the right thing because I wasn’t given a break or a reward so I’ll try something else, I’ll start tossing my head and see if that makes you happy. No. I’ll do a couple of pigroots. Nope that didn’t work either. Hey get out of my mouth you brute handed human or I’ll really resist. Ouch that hurt! You bastard. Thanks for nothing!’ So the party ended on a sour note. It went for way too long and there was just too much everything apart from rest, reward and comfort. Knowing when to quit is a real art. © Glenn Wilson August 2006

My Most Memorable Day by Jo Ravan I have been "natural" now for about six years, and have not looked back. Therefore since going natural I have had many memorable days. Such as the first time playing the catch me game having my horse follow me around, and first time playing the circling game at liberty in the middle of the paddock. But this one sticks with me. My little filly (whom I bred and have been playing with since she was born) was about six months old, she was in a paddock with her mother and another mare. On this day I heard galloping hooves and then a constant calling from the paddock, I looked out to see my little filly looking over to the house (where I was) and whinnying, once I came out she was still calling and looking very worried. When I go over, I realise that one horse is missing, as I start walking down the pad-dock, Honey (my filly) takes the lead and leads me through some bush to the bottom of the paddock, where there was a break in the fence, and from there you could see the missing horse right down in the bottom paddock. She knew that if she called me I would come, and that I was the person to fix her problem. It was such a buzz to know that she sees me as someone that she not only trusts, but as someone who will help her if she has a problem. She is almost two now and each time I play with her I come away knowing that she is going to be the best horse that I have ever had.

Thanks Jo Ravan

Thanks Jo for sending this in, I am glad that last months entries inspired you to write in.

As there were no entries to last months competition, yep yah gotta be in it to win it, I will be sending Jo out a ‘free’ Think Like A Pony Book. Cheers, Lee

YOUNG HORSE/ FOUNDATION COURSE HELD @ EXETER FARM IN SEPTEMBER 2006

by Camilla Davidson

Page 9 Volume 1, Issue 5

The second YHF course was run at Exeter Farm on the weekend of the 23rd September, with 7 students attending the 3 days. We had great weather on two days with one day blowing a gale as many of you know Braidwood can. A Credit to both horses and students that all stayed calm and actually enjoyed the day. During this windy day Camilla gave demonstrations in the covered round pen. Using the students horses and dealing with the issues students were

having with their individual horses. With all students watching and gaining great un-derstanding from each sessions. All students talked at the end of the 3 days, to say how much their horses and them-selves benefited from spending three uninterrupted days with their horses, with like minded students on a beautiful cattle property that has been set up for positive pro-gressive learning of Natural Horsemanship = Good Horsemanship. In these three days students learnt exercises using the 7 games to build their horses confidence that build their horses agility and suppleness, which then builds the stu-dents confidence which = safety and agility which keeps everyone safe. The students learnt that these basic yields and exercises are a natural foundation to continue on into higher level training, with a confident safe & athletic horse. The 3 days was a great success with all students leaving, with a new level of confi-dence within their horses and themselves. Southern Tablelands NH Fun & Support day The October Bungendore NH Fun & Support day was held on the 7th October at the Bungendore show grounds with 17 regular NH students attending and 7 newcomers. All very interested and inspired in what we did throughout the day. I took this opportunity in taking my young 9 month QH Filly for her first social outing amongst other horses and away from her usual herd of 6. Two horses from her herd, Augustus and Chips, accompanying her. Everyone one had a great day playing with their horses in the morning. I did a short

demonstration with the young filly for the new comers. Then went and spent time catching up with a little relaxation at lunch time and then riding out in groups in the afternoon. The next Bungendore Fun & Support day will be held on the 9th December, ( No November day ) @ the Bungendore show grounds, starts at 9am and finishes at 3pm. All interested people very welcome. So who is … David Stuart

“Dilkera Station,” Nebo 4742, Qld, Australia Email [email protected]

In growing up on my family’s cattle property in Central Queensland Australia, horses and livestock were, and have continued to be very much a part of every day life. A successful completion of a 2 year rural training course at the Emerald Agricul-tural College in Central Queensland, then gave an opportunity to stay on at the col-lege through the attainment of a scholarship, to study advanced horsemanship, which included attending a Ray Hunt course in 1986 and the completion of a horse masters diploma course with the Australian Academy of Equitation. An involvement with Pat Parelli began as a participant on a 9month agricultural ex-change programme to the United States in 1989, riding cutting horses and starting all the young horses. Through my involvement with the Parelli organization, over a time frame of 15 years, extensive training was given in the areas of horsemanship and horse train-ing and the teaching of people. As one of the first instructors to be endorsed to teach under the umbrella of Parelli, and through a period of cumulative training and experience, in 2004, becoming one of the most senior and accomplished Parelli Professionals. In 2005, in a new position as director of programme development for Equine Ethol-ogy U.K., I facilitated an accreditation process for an educational programme that would help to meet new criteria and legislation that equestrian federations within Europe would introduce in the foreseeable future as well as enabling Equine Ethol-ogy to become a part of the much broader equestrian world within Europe. In my work as a teacher and trainer I travelled and taught all over the world and vis-ited the continents of Australasia, North America, the U.K., Europe and the United Arab Emirates. My work has involved amateurs, professionals and professional or-ganizations within the equestrian industry and has enabled both amateurs and pro-fessionals to become more competent around horses and to do so in a safe man-ner. The last 20 years of experience and the meeting of horseman like Ray Hunt, Pat Parelli, Mike Bridges, Craig Johnson and Martin Black and the horse and people training received from the Parelli Corporation. Have enabled myself to not only teach around the world but also to give and be a part of demonstrations held at in-ternational equine events like Burghley Horse Trials, a 4 Star international 3 day event held in the U.K. and also demonstrations given to her majesty the Queen of England at the Royal Mews Buckingham Palace and demonstrations given to the Dubai Royal Family.

What’s New at Exeter Farm! Steve Byrne in 2007!

The new year will kick off with an addition to our program that we are very excited, and very proud, to announce. Steve Byrne will present a Colt Start and Horsemanship clinic from February 17th to 25th. Steve’s very fine website (www.stevebyrne.com ) gives his story, his horsemanship journey, as well as where he’s up to now. We feel blessed to have a person and horseman of Steve’s caliber choose to join the other fine teachers who share their knowledge at Exeter Farm. In a relatively short time in the life of a horseman, Steve has dedicated him-self to seeking exceptional mentors and teachers, and his exceptional development reflects this. For this Camp you will book in through Steve; Email: [email protected] or phone him on 0427 190 271 Almost surely 2007 will bring more Cow Camps, more Smooth Moves, more Foundation Courses with Camilla (isn’t she doing a great job! I hear great feedback from happy students;) and another Cutting Camp with Richard. To all, again we acknowledge you for your support of yourselves, your horses, and Exeter Farm.

Our best to you, Kate and Owen

Hi again and Welcome to the warmer weather.

As you might recall, I ran a competition 3 months ago with the prize being FREE coaching and my 6 week Lose Fat, Gain Health Program. Well … I have some news from the people who are in the final stages of that program. (I have withheld their names to “Protect the Inno-cent”) I am really pleased with their commitment to their health and the re-sults that this has afforded.

Nikki, my horse, would like to take this opportunity to thank Helen Hall for a fitter, healthier, happier owner. Nikki says, “she use to be such a grouch, with her chronic digestive problems, obviously they don't bother her so much any more. She rides more fluidly - thank goodness- must be that she is more relaxed and fitter, she also feels lighter! All great news for me.”

I definitely get up with a much better spring in my step and are more clear headed throughout the day. My clothes are looser so something has happened. My most favourite thing with the program so far though is that it's sustainable! I mean every diet type thing I've every tried, as much as they say it's not a diet it's a lifestyle, they are NOT sustainable. For me, anyway. The information I've been given I'll be digesting for awhile but it does make sense. The mineral balancing, the types of foods, I'm not really going without at all. I enjoy eating within the guidelines. I'd recommend it for anyone you has a fridge full of non-fat foods! The other really good thing that I am finding super is the fitness/exercise thing. I HATE deliberate exercise..... But it's heaps easier to stay within a heart rate (that a thing beeps at you and tells you what it is anyway) than get out there and push myself so I'm hot, tired, starving and dreading doing it again. I just liked this program as I do really see it changing quite a few lifestyle things for me. I feel like I'm putting as much effort and thought into feeding me as I do my horse now. Thanks

This part will hold the Koppers log in place. Screw it all together from the underside, place log in the centre position, and then turn it over into the finished position. The finished product is VERY heavy, so best to build it where you are going to use it!
