Hello, Narwhals! It is now February, only less than two

months left of the 2012-13 Key Club year! I know, so sad! With that said, we will be holding club elections this month to elect your club leaders for the 2013-14 Key Club year. The month of February is a very important month for Key Club as we prepare for the transition of powers and prepare for District Convention. I would to say thank you to all of the members for making this year THE BEST year for Santa Susana Key Club. Our club would not be the same without you. Keep serving and keep leading because you are all amazing. Swimming in service, Paolo Recto Santa Susana Key Club President 2012-13

Past Events The Decorating of Tuxedo Air Submitted by Dana Brough, Grade 10

On December 27th, 28th, and 30th, I went to Pasadena and helped the Cal Poly students decorate their Rose Parade float. Their float was titled “Tuxedo Air” and focused on the idea of penguins learning how to fly, thus embodying the theme of the parade - Oh, the places you’ll go! There were five major scenes on the float: a classroom with a professor and three students, a lab scene with three penguins testing flight simulation, a central runway ramp with one large penguin about to fly off it, two penguins in the front (one waving lights for “Yes,” and one waving flags for “No”), and a mother holding onto her baby that is about to fly away with balloons. Over the course of these three days, I put black seaweed on the two penguins in the front, put squares of cornhusk on two crates, worked with spider chrysanthemums, and put orange marigolds on a windsock. Although the work involved an excessive amount of detail and working with industrial glue that will NOT come out of your clothes, I definitely enjoyed the experience. I got the chance to work with college students as well as people from across the United States.

When the float finally turned the corner on parade day, I felt ecstatic seeing everything that I decorated. “Tuxedo Air” even won the Bob Hope Humor Award for having the most comical concept. Working with the Cal Poly students was an experience I will never forget, and I will definitely come back this year in 2013 to help with their next float.

Change of Heart Submitted by Brianna Scranton, Grade 9 For the past few months, I have been volunteering at A Change of Heart Animal Rescue every Friday from 4-5pm. A Change of Heart Animal Rescue is a new rescue that opened on May 1, 2011. Their mission is to rescue dogs from high kill shelters and provide them with a second chance at life because sometimes a change of heart is necessary. They are located inside of Theresa's Country Feed and Pet Supply, 1836 Erringer Rd. in Simi Valley. The puppies are open to view every day 8:30am - 8:30pm. While working at this rescue I was assigned many different tasks. Some of these tasks included cleaning their cages, feeding them, cleaning their bowls, taking them for walks, giving them medicine, talking to customers, doing laundry, and playing with them constantly. A supervisor always watched me in case I had any questions or concerns. I always look forward to going to the shelter every week because I absolutely love all of the puppies and

enjoy taking care of them in any way that I can. I encourage people to volunteer at

this shelter because it is very rewarding and enjoyable at the same time.

Ongoing Projects

Pop Tabs Throughout the year we collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald house. This is a place in close proximity to a hospital where families can stay when their child is in the hospital. They recycle the pop tabs and use the money to help families pay to stay at the house as well as pay the utilities and other expenses needed to keep the house running. So keep collecting! They can be from canned beverages and even the tabs from canned food!

S.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles) We are continually collecting glasses for SOS. Check with everyone you know to see if they have any old specs that they do not use anymore. Keep in mind, the end of the school year is ending and if every member brings in at least 3 pairs of glasses, our sponsoring Kiwanis of Santa Susana will throw us a pizza party!

Feeding the Homeless Our club helps at 2 different locations for feeding the homeless and we could always use more volunteers! We help with set up, dinner service, dishes, and clean up after. •Stillwaters Cafe at Shepard of the

Valley Church: Thursdays from 5-7pm

•The Samaritan Center: 1st Thursday of the month
