Hello Santa Susana Narwhals! It's your 2012-13 Key Club president, Paolo Recto. It is my pleasure and an honor to be serving you until the end of March next year. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and witnessing your efforts in community service. Many newly inducted key club presidents have set goals for their clubs, goals that will take their club above and beyond to success. Although our club is already successful, I have made goals for our club that I hope to achieve next year: 95+ paid members, $350 dollars raised for Pediatric Trauma Program, 1000+ service hours, and a club award at District Convention 2013. I have faith in our club that we can achieve the goals I have set. I encourage you all to try to recruit new members, find many people to participate in fundraisers, and strive to get more service hours. Our club is already strong, and I know that we can grow stronger. I hope that Santa Susana Key Club can grow to be one Key Club "ohana", just like our Cali-Nev-Ha district. We had a really good year last year, so let's make this new year an even better one, Narwhals! -- Paolo Recto Santa Susana Key Club President 2012-13

Past Events A MAGICAL Weekend to Remember: DCON 2012! Written by Kaila Mattera A weekend to remember indeed! Santa Clara Convention Center hosted this year’s district convention! The six hour bus ride with my fellow Narwhals from Simi, Royal and Newbury Park high schools seemed to zip by. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were greeted by hundreds of excited Key Clubbers. District convention was action packed and over flowing with Key Club spirit from the very begining! It was amazing to experience the energy of over 3,200 Key Clubbers! Everywhere you went, there were Key

Clubbers. On Friday, we were all dressed in the different spirit attire from our home division or club. There was every color on the spectrum all over the Convention Center representing kids from all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii. There was no wasting time because workshops started promptly at 6pm! There were so many different workshops and so many new things to learn, it was difficult to choose where to go! The first General Session was when I realized how big Key Club really is. Three giant exhibit halls were opened to seat all 3,200 of us! When you multiply that by 100 and you have all of Key Club International! It was so loud! Everywhere you looked there were spirit battles and Key Clubbers chanting the Key Club cheer. It was so full of energy and all over amazing. Our Keynote Speaker, a former Cali-Nev-Ha Governor, was Patrick Mauer and all that he had to say inspired me to look at things differently. After the General Session we attended the service expo, where we learned about service projects and

fundraisers that other clubs had done. We also got a chance to talk one on one with the candidates who were running for an executive office. After that it was off to the hotel rooms to get whatever sleep you could before the next busy day. Saturday was all about business. Dressed in business professional attire, we got down to a main reason for our attendance: to elect the next executive board. We attended a caucus session where we listened to the candidates and asked them questions about their qualifications and goals for the next year. The positions being run for were Governor, Secretary, Treasurer, and Technology Editor. After the caucus, I got the opportunity to represent Santa Susana Key Club as a delegate in The House of Delegates, where I voted for the candidates who I believed would best benefit our club. In the House of Delegates, there was a nominating conference to narrow the candidates down to two. From there, we would vote for each candidate who will fill each position.

Past Events But it was not all about elections. We gathered for lunch and dinner in the General Sessions where all the clubs were recognized for their outstanding service. It was awesome to see Santa Susana High School come up on the big screen several times and feel proud of everything we had accomplished and that I could represent our club and scream and clap for my club to show that we were proud. After the awards had been awarded and everything had been said, the election results were announced. That meant it was time to celebrate! I danced the night away with all the Key Clubbers at the Governor’s Ball and celebrated the magic of service! On Sunday, dressed in business casual, we all gathered one last time to retire the old board and install the new one. I think everyone got emotional when listening to Governor Erinn Wong’s farewell speech, I know I did. It meant that another year had gone by, and soon, I will have to say goodbye to Key Club too. After a fast paced energy filled weekend of waking up at 5am and staying up until midnight, I did not want to leave. It was my first DCON and I could not believe it was over. I now believe that with the knowledge I gained, I can help make our club better and stronger. One Ohana. Watch the DCON 2012 video here.

Jamming to the Beat of the Blues Written by Kaila Mattera

On Saturday, April 28, I arrived at the Simi Valley Blues Festival. It was held at the beautiful Hummingbird Nest Ranch up off of Kuehner rd. It was a very hot day, but that did not stop all the hundreds of people who turned up to listen to the awesome blues musicians. I got the wonderful opportunity to work alongside a few of our sponsoring Santa Susana Kiwanis in the Food Wagon. I worked from 11:30-2:30 and man was it busy! Besides the rare periods where no one was in line, I was always on my toes. Dancing back and forth to the beat of the Blues to get orders from the grill to the window or and ice-cold beverage was just awesome. My favorite part was when I had finished; I was told that I did a great job. It made all of the running back and forth worthwhile, knowing that, in some way, I had been helpful. I had a lot of fun and I can’t wait to sign up again next year! Thank you to all the other volunteers who turned out! Jannice Alejo, Lily Chapman, Nghi Tran, Jimmy Lam, Mindy Nguyen, and Shawnpreet Matharu.

This Takes the Pie! Written by Paolo Recto

Divisional Council Meetings (DCMs) are always fun! It's a great way to meet other Key Clubbers in our division, learn more about division and district happenings, and just HAVE FUN! The April DCM, held on April 29th, was one of the best DCMs I've attended. Not only was it our LTG Kristine's first official DCM, but it was also my first time being “pied” in the face. After the actual meeting, our LTG usually sets up a game or a service project, and for April, it was a little of both. For only ONE dollar, members had a chance to pie me, our LTG, or other members who volunteered. All of the funds we raised will go towards Pediatric Trauma Program. Out of the 14 members that attended, we were able to raise $29 for PTP.

Pop Tabs  Throughout  the  year  we  collect  pop  tabs  for  Ronald  McDonald  house.  This  is  a  place  in  close  proximity  to  a  hospital  where  families  can  stay  when  their  child  is  in  the  hospital.  They  recycle  the  pop  tabs  and  use  the  money  to  help  families  pay  to  stay  at  the  house  as  well  as  pay  the  utilities  and  other  expenses  needed  to  keep  the  house  running.  So  keep  collecting!  They  can  be  from  canned  beverages  and  even  the  tabs  from  canned  food!

S.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles) We  are  continually  collecting  glasses  for  SOS.  Check  with  everyone  you  know  to  see  if  they  have  any  old  specs  that  they  do  not  use  anymore.    Keep  in  mind,  the  end  of  the  school  year  is  ending  and  if  every  member  brings  in  at  least  3  pairs  of  glasses,  our  sponsoring  Kiwanis  of  Santa  Susana  will  throw  us  a  pizza  party!

Feeding the Homeless Our  club  helps  at  2  different  locations  for  feeding  the  homeless  and  we  could  always  use  more  volunteers!  We  help  with  set  up,  dinner  service,  dishes,  and  clean  up  after.      •Stillwaters Cafe at Shepard of the

Our KEY Family

Hello Troubadours!

This year has been A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Wow. Your amazing dedication, passion, and perseverance were clearly reflected by the awards that Santa Susana received this year! To be honest, Santa Susana has been one of my pride and glory throughout my term as Lieutenant Governor. Seeing the amount of service, outstanding efforts, and amount of money raised has been one of the most amazing feelings that I could ever ask for. Thank you Troubadours for everything you have done, not only towards this organization, but also to the various communities that you have affected throughout the world.

As the 2011-2012 administrative year comes to a close, please do not ever forget those who have strived and taken initiative to be one of your leaders. Thank your Key Club Board, Lu, Apurva, Xiao, Raahima and Kaila, for everything they have done this year. They have done such an amazing job and contributed a lot to make Santa Susana the best club it can be. Also, let us not forget the adults that have been there to support us in many ways. Your Faculty Advisor, Sharon DeMartino, and Kiwanis Advisor, Wayne Shultz, are the ones that have been there to look over everything that you have done this entire year.

However, with this close, a new beginning starts. Seniors, I hope to see you at either Kiwanis or Circle K next year. Do not ever forget the Kiwanis Family. We’re one big Ohana and I hope to keep it that way. For all the underclassmen, please give your support to your new board! Help them help you succeed and make this the best Key Club year that it can be!

I hope that this year has taught many of you the meaning of service. I hope I was able to communicate my passion through my actions and words. I hope that by the end of this year, you are as proud as I am of this wonderful club and division. It has been a truly amazing experience to serve all of you as a Lieutenant Governor. I am really glad that I was able to have the opportunity to meet and bond with you all. But, this is not the end, but merely a “See you Later Narwhals!” We’re one big family and as Stitch would say, Ohana means family, and family never gets lefts behind… or forgotten.

Yours truly,

Kyle de la Cena
