The Ronald McDonald House visit on June 9th was an eye opening experience. Before the visit, my view of collecting pop-tops for the charity was completely different. Although I knew what the pop-top collection was, I never really thought about whom it affected. The Ronald McDonald House collects pop-tops and recycles them in order to raise the money that allows them to serve these families. Along with several Key Club members, we toured both houses at the Pasadena facility. We learned that they were built in 1912! My favorite part of the whole experience was getting to explore the houses and meet some of the people that lived there. The children who lived in the houses were so optimistic and happy, reminding me of what was really important. Because I was able to visit the houses, my reasons for collecting pop-tops have changed. No longer are they for collecting hours. To me, the reason for collecting pop-tops is to help these families have one less thing to worry about. The Ronald McDonald House visit in Pasadena is one of my favorite Key Club experiences.

On June 20th, I attended our Sponsoring Kiwanis Club of Santa Susana’s meeting. It was a great experience to see and hear how they do things at the Kiwanis level. I also got the chance to listen to their guest speaker, Melissa Siebers, talk about Not One More. This is a program she helped found to educate parents and prevent death by heroin. It all began when she lost her daughter in a heroin related incident. It was heartbreaking to hear her talk about her experience with her daughter’s battle and then loosing her. She, along with other parents who lost their children to this terrible drug, are committed and passionate about educating the community and spreading the

word to prevent death from drugs. I believe this is a great cause and this is why I wear their bracelet. Not one more overdose, not one more lost spirit, not one more grieving heart. I encourage you to get involved with this group of dedicated individuals. To learn more about Not One More or to sign up to volunteer at their events, please visit their website, notonemore.net.

On June 9 of 2012, I went with some of the Key Club Members to the Ronald McDonald House in Pasadena. This was a very cool opportunity as we were able to see the great things that the house does for sick children. In addition, it was nice to see how happy the children were to be taken such good care of. I remember meeting this one girl and she had the biggest smile on her face even though she just had surgery on her leg. She explained how happy she was because she was wearing the jewelry that some volunteers had made her. Also, she said that the mini playground at the back of the house was her "park". It was so nice to see how the littlest things made her happy. This experience made me realize that we sometimes take things for granted. I strongly encourage the members to go next year so they can experience the love and care that the Ronald McDonald House provides. Also, I encourage all of the members to collect as many pop-tops as they can because it helps keep the house running. Visiting the Ronald McDonald House was an experience that I will never forget.

There was watermelon galore at June DCM! Paolo Recto and Kaila Mattera participate alongside other members from D42E in the watermelon-eating contest

to raise money for PTP. Ltg. Kristine Rafanan watches to see who will win the Tuti Fruti gift

<<< Our members Paolo Recto, Marilyn Guaresti, Serena Lee, and Michael Gulino break the ice with the other members in this fun icebreaker, The Human Knot at the D42E June DCM.

On the 25th of June, I attended Division 42 East‘s June DCM at the Rancho Madera Community Park. It was very exciting! I do not go to DCMs often, but this DCM made me more motivated for Key Club. Meeting new people and socializing with other members of Key Club in other high schools is great. It’s nice to see other motivated people in Key Club wanting to make a difference. We started off the meeting with an icebreaker: The Human Knot. A familiar game by most people, it is when a big group comes together and tangles themselves up by holding hands with random people across from you. We then attempted to untangle ourselves so that we make a circle. This icebreaker brought us closer together (literally!) and was pretty successful. We did end up untangling ourselves but ended up making three separate circles. Next, each president talked about what his or her club has been doing in the past month. It was awesome to know about what other clubs have been doing and are considering to make their Key Club the best it can be. For Division business, we talked about lanyards, wristbands, and other possible merchandise. Many of us got excited about this, but still took into the consideration of our limited budget. The LTG announced that we would be doing more fundraisers for our Division so we could raise money to afford merchandise and go to more events. After, awards were given out, and our club won Club of the Month, Most Service Projects, and Most Service Hours! Yay! Last but not least, we had a watermelon-eating contest. It was $2 to participate and the winner won a Tutti Frutti gift card. 4 boys and 4 girls participated, and our own President Paolo Recto won! Just kidding. It was a close race between our Tech Editor Kaila Mattera and Royal President Kevin Le. Kevin won by a few bites. It was very enjoyable watching the members try to eat as much watermelon as possible in a minute without using our hands. Overall, this DCM was a great experience! I hope to attend DCMs more often and I encourage all of you members to go to DCMs too!

Ongoing Projects

Pop Tabs Throughout the year we collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald house. This is a place in close proximity to a hospital where families can stay when their child is in the hospital. They recycle the pop tabs and use the money to help families pay to stay at the house as well as pay the utilities and other expenses needed to keep the house running. So keep collecting! They can be from canned beverages and even the tabs from canned food!

S.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles) We are continually collecting glasses for SOS. Check with everyone you know to see if they have any old specs that they do not use anymore. Keep in mind, the end of the school year is ending and if every member brings in at least 3 pairs of glasses, our sponsoring Kiwanis of Santa Susana will throw us a pizza party!

Feeding the Homeless Our club helps at 2 different locations for feeding the homeless and we could always use more volunteers! We help with set up, dinner service, dishes, and clean up after. •Stillwaters Cafe at Shepard of the

Valley Church: Thursdays from 5-7pm

•The Samaritan Center: 1st Thursday of the month

Hello Santa Susana Narwhals! SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE! I would like to thank all of you for the support and encouragement you have given me in the past three months as I begin my term. I am so proud of all of you because YOU are the reason why our club is doing so well in our division. In the month of June, our club received three awards, Club of the Month, Most Service Hours, and Most Service Projects. It truly is a blessing to know that I serve such a great club! Now, since July is finally here, it's time for our club to go big. Please keep checking your emails for service opportunities, possible fundraisers, and club meetings. Also, think of some ideas that our club could do for the next school year! I hope you all have a great July! Stay safe and have fun! -- Paolo Recto Santa Susana Key Club President 2012-13 Division 42 East | Region 10 Cali-Nev-Ha District Email: [email protected] Call/Text: 8054042268

Message from the Editor Hello my fellow Key Clubbers and welcome to a new Key Club year! I am so lucky to have been appointed as your Editor again for the new year! I hope that I will be able to represent YOU, the members, and keep you informed about all that Key Club has to offer. I also want to publicize our events and get the word out about Santa Susana Key Club! We may be small now but hopefully if people know who we are and what we do, we will be much bigger. I know we have a great year ahead of us! I hope you all are having a great summer and I will see you in the fall! Please don’t forget to keep up your volunteering! Even though we are out of school for summer does not mean the service has to stop.
