Hello Santa Susana Narwhals! Welcome back to school! Sadly, summer has officially ended but that does not mean the fun has to stop. With a new school year, brings new opportunities and new beginnings. Get ready for a fun year because Santa Susana Key Club is going BIG this year. The goals set by the club officers can finally now be in effect! As of September1st, the club has over 600 hours of service! We are over halfway through with the club goal of surpassing 1000 service hours for the year. We still have to reach the goals of $350 for PTP and also a service project/fundraiser every month. Also, we have to reach the goal of having over 95 members! So returning members please pay your dues and encourage your friends to join Key Club. I can tell that this Key Club year is going to be great. I'm very excited to serve you all and meet the Freshmen Class of 2016! We have cool events and fundraisers planned for the year and we can't wait to reveal them to you. Swimming in service, Paolo Recto Santa Susana Key Club President 2012-13 Email: [email protected]

Welcome Back!

Ongoing Projects

Pop Tabs Throughout the year we collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald house. This is a place in close proximity to a hospital where families can stay when their child is in the hospital. They recycle the pop tabs and use the money to help families pay to stay at the house as well as pay the utilities and other expenses needed to keep the house running. So keep collecting! They can be from canned beverages and even the tabs from canned food!

S.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles) We are continually collecting glasses for SOS. Check with everyone you know to see if they have any old specs that they do not use anymore. Keep in mind, the end of the school year is ending and if every member brings in at least 3 pairs of glasses, our sponsoring Kiwanis of Santa Susana will throw us a pizza party!

Feeding the Homeless Our club helps at 2 different locations for feeding the homeless and we could always use more volunteers! We help with set up, dinner service, dishes, and clean up after. •Stillwaters Cafe at Shepard of the

Valley Church: Thursdays from 5-7pm

•The Samaritan Center: 1st Thursday of the month

Treasurer Michelle Hosogai I'm Michelle Hosogai and I am 15 years old. I'm the Santa Susana Key Club treasurer for the 2012-13 year. I am known as the FRENCH FRIES monster and anything with sushi or Korean BBQ. I am Japanese, Chinese, and part Indonesian so basically a strange hybrid of Asians. I really love to spend time drawing or playing piano and of course contributing to our school's Key Club.

President Paolo Recto Hey Santa Susana Narwhals! My name is Paolo Recto and I'm your Key Club President. Hmm, who am I? Well, I am a Junior, 15 years of age, and I'm Filipino. I'm also the junior class secretary and International Club publicist. I really like food. If you bring me boba, sushi, or Korean BBQ to one of the Key Club meetings, I'll probably love you forever. My love for Key Club is even greater though! I joined Key Club freshman year and I've grown to be IN LOVE with the organization and our club. It may seem like my life revolves around only Key Club, but I do other things. I really like to travel, sing random songs, dance in random places, and I really like being LOUD (But only for my Narwhals). If you ever see me around school, don't be afraid to say hi! I don't bite, except in spirit battles (; I look forward to getting to know all of you!

Vice President Sohil Bammi I'm Sohil Bammi and I'm now an 11th grader at

Santa Susana High School. I have a black belt in Shotokan Karate and play four instruments.

I play viola in the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra and in the University of Northridge

Youth Orchestra. I have a passion for math and computer science. I once said “It’s like the

computer is talking to me and by talking to me I don’t like that dubstep you get from random

computer sounds, but in code. I’m basically the Joan of Arc of computers… but that means I get

set on fire at the stake for having little to no talent… I should have thought this through…”

Nothing could describe me more than the latter quotation. I have more than ten friends on

Facebook and I am excited to fulfill my position requirements as vice president of Key Club.

Over the summer, she performed a total of more than 75 hours of service. She volunteers at the local hospital and dentistry. Community service has been a big part of her life that she even incorporated it into her senior project. Amy is now a senior and will continue to serve. Congratulations, Amy Lai, for being the August Member of the Month!

Secretary Serena Lee Hey Key Clubbers! My name is Serena Lee. I’m 16 years old and an upcoming junior. I am also the upcoming Vice President of CSF. I eat popcorn all the time and my passion is singing! (even though I can’t and won’t be a singer in the future...) Instead my plan is to become a doctor, possibly in the medicine field. I also dance a little in pointe at our school and plan to be in Jazz Choir this upcoming year. Outside of all the stressful school work, I play the piano and participate in kung fu. Key Club always reminds me though, even with all these activities that I’m a part of, that there should always be time to help the community and even the world. Volunteer hours are important in creating a good moral character and that’s why Key Club is important to me. I hope to get to know our members a lot more since I'll be organizing your hours! ;)

Tech Editor Kaila Mattera Kaila's the name, photography and design is my

game. I am 15 years old and an upcoming junior. I am the jeans and a t-shirt type of girl. I am quiet most of the time, but I can be loud when I want to be. I believe in

the best of everyone and everything and I am a tad bit indecisive. If there is one thing I am certain, it is this: I am a Key Clubber from my head to my toes. I love to participate in Key Club events and volunteer every chance that I get. When I’m not

volunteering, I am just an average high school kid trying to figure things out as I go. I like to run, listen to the radio, and spend time with my family and friends. I love traveling and all things summer. Since I joined Key Club in my freshman year, I

have fallen in love with it! This is more than just a club, it is a family. I hope you will feel like part of our family too! If you ever see me around, don't by afraid to say

hello! I cannot wait to get to know each and every one of you!
