Hello Santa Susana Narwhals! I hope you are having an awesome school year. November is going to be a fun month for our Key Club. On November 10th, the CNH District will be holding Fall Rally South at Six Flags Magic Mountain. It will be a fun-filled day with over 9,000 Key Clubbers showing their Key Club spirit as well as fundraising for Pediatric Trauma Program. I also want to thank you, the members, for being so awesome in volunteering at events. This year is the first year I have seen so much interest from the members about volunteering! We are close to our club goal of 1000 service hours! Also, I have some great news to announce, our club has over 100 members for the 2012-2013 Key Club year! That means we have at least twenty more members than last year and I have reached my goal of having over 100 members. Lastly, we have raised $130.51 for Pediatric Trauma Program! ($90 more than we raised last year!) Thank you so much for those of you who have joined Key Club and helped us fundraise for Pediatric Trauma Program. I hope you all have a Happy November! -- Swimming in Service, Paolo Recto Santa Susana Key Club President 2012-2013

Why did you join Key Club? We want to hear from YOU! Send your articles to [email protected] and you could be featured in next month’s newsletter! (You will receive 1 hour of service if you submit articles by the 23rd of the month) Opportunities. Submitted By Anjali Pillai. Grade 9. A lot of my friends were in Key Club last year, and I heard many good things about it. I decided to join because of the many benefits that would come from it. First of all, colleges love seeing volunteer hours on applications, and what better way is there to earn hours than by joining Key Club? Also, the club helps you gain leadership and communication skills, both of which are important in life. Lastly, Key Club offers so many fun volunteer opportunities! Key Club is a way to make a difference in our community, so why not join?

Past Events

Best Halloween Ever! Submitted by Siena Mattera.

I helped out at the Simi Valley Parks and Rec. Halloween Carnival. I got to help at the ticket prize booth with my friend that I had not seen in a while. Kids won tickets at the game booths that we traded for bigger prizes. The little kids were so cute in their costumes! We got to take a

break and relax for a short time while some one else covered our booth. I strongly encourage everyone who has nothing to do on Halloween to volunteer there! This is my second year volunteering at this event and I always have so much fun! <<Siena Mattera as a marionette puppet helping at the RSRPD Halloween Carnival.

Keeping up with the Kiwanis! Submitted by Paolo Recto.

On October 7th, I was invited to attend the Kiwanis Club of Santa Susana's installation for their 2012-2013 board. This was my first Kiwanis meeting and I was NOT disappointed. The Kiwanis club is very entertaining. It is filled with kind adults who love to serve their community. When the meeting started, I then realized that our Kiwanis club really does a lot. I want to congratulate Mr. Eric Cohen and all of the other officers who were installed. I’d also like to give a big thanks to the immediate past officers who helped our club and the community. I'm very thankful to have them by our side as our club grows. Without them, our Key Club probably wouldn't even be here today. I am looking forward to working with all of their officers and I hope to go above and BEEyond in new service projects with them.

Ongoing Projects

Pop Tabs Throughout the year we collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald house. This is a place in close proximity to a hospital where families can stay when their child is in the hospital. They recycle the pop tabs and use the money to help families pay to stay at the house as well as pay the utilities and other expenses needed to keep the house running. So keep collecting! They can be from canned beverages and even the tabs from canned food!

S.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles) We are continually collecting glasses for SOS. Check with everyone you know to see if they have any old specs that they do not use anymore. Keep in mind, the end of the school year is ending and if every member brings in at least 3 pairs of glasses, our sponsoring Kiwanis of Santa Susana will throw us a pizza party!

Feeding the Homeless Our club helps at 2 different locations for feeding the homeless and we could always use more volunteers! We help with set up, dinner service, dishes, and clean up after. •Stillwaters Cafe at Shepard of the

Valley Church: Thursdays from 5-7pm

•The Samaritan Center: 1st Thursday of the month 4:45-7pm

Member of the Month

Margot Rowe

Margot Rowe, a freshman at SSHS, has taken a strong interest in Key Club. Ever since the beginning of the school year, she has volunteered at most of the events we have offered so far. We cannot wait to see what she does, Key Club wise, in the near future!

Congratulations, Margot! Member of the Month of October!

Members of the Quarter Congratulations to the following members: Sarah Evans, Kori Swanson, Gabi Nguyen, Andrea Magat, Sara Miller, Ethan Mallari, Nikolas Welch, Margot Rowe, Rizza Harder, Diane Harder, Ria Regi, Carly Balster, Justine Balster, Dana Brough, Mason Thurmond, Kayla Hoffman, Siena Mattera, and Dakota Triplett. In the first quarter of the school year, these members have been outstanding and have exhibited the qualities of being a dedicated Key Clubber. They have volunteered at many service events and have attended division and/or region events. THANK YOU for all of your hard work and dedication to our club and our community! Keep up the good work! To the rest of the members, THANK YOU for your service! We hope you will dedicate yourselves in the second quarter and maybe you too can be recognized!

Message from the Editor Hello my fellow Key Clubbers!! I hope you are all getting back into the swing of things! It is getting to be the holiday season! This tends to be the busiest times for Key Club and community service (and my personal favorite)! I will try to be at as many events that I can be at with my camera in hand!! I will need your help though, so PLEASE take pictures at the events you volunteer at!! I really appreciate the help! Don’t forget tot say hey if you see me on campus or at an event! A new year means new members! Now that most of you have paid your dues, you are officially part of our family! Check out the back cover to check out the newest editions to our Key!
