Halloween Dance

Boo! The Day of the Dead is just around the corner! In just a few more weeks, we'll all be in costumes, knocking on neighbors doors for candy! But there are many other ways to celebrate! Parties, sleepovers, and, at least at this school, dances! On Thursday, October 29th, at 3:30, our very own Marsh Creek Halloween dance! It sure will be a "Spooktacular" Night! The admission is 5 dollars, which goes to the DJ, food, drinks, and the Mike Getz foundation. Mike Getz was a teacher here at this school who tragically passed away from a heart attack this summer. The money will also go to families who can't afford to go to Paradise Farms. There will be snacks, drinks, and fun provided! See you there!

-Max D.

Student Council and the Home and School Association are helping to set up and plan this year's 2nd annual Halloween Dance! Come in your costume, have some food, and dance hard! 😋🎃🍁👻🍫

Are Police abusing their rights?

Hey! What do you think? Do you trust the police or not? I asked 45 people the same question and here's what they said: "It depends, I've heard of shady comments." "I trust the police because they're professionals." "Yeah, because they keep us safe." "Yes because they're doing their job." "Kind of." "Uh, yeah I trust them, just some of them are bad." "No, because they could lie." The people that said this were random people that I asked.

In Victoria, Texas: December 15, 2014 an elderly man gets stun gunned by an officer. The age of the cop was 23, and the man was at the age of 76. He threw the man to the police car, tackling him to the ground, and then shot him with a taser gun twice.

Do you think this man should be a police officer?

Pete Vasques: (victim of cop) "Uh, I don't think so, not the way he acted. He don't have any business wearing a badge or carry'n a gun."

Do police officers intentionally lie to serve their own interest? Did you know that 31 percent of Americans, 45 percent among African Americans, 41 percent among young people, and 39 percent among Democrats believe they do it for their own interests. In my opinion, I'm not surprised one bit, because back in the 1900s, all blacks were free, yet when a white murdered or assassinated a black the police would not come, even though it was the law. If a black murdered a white the police would come and beat them up or potentially kill them. But this changed when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his speech, yet still little changed.

I just want to assure people that I'm not against the government but I'm trying to tell you that I don't think they're using their power correctly. I know that they abuse the power given to them. Before the men that call themselves the police become police, they take oaths and one of them is the Oath Of Honor. The oath says that they must obey the constitution, bill of rights, and the law. Now I'm going to ask you again... What do you think?

Miss Laverty Interview We sat down with Miss Dani Laverty (LAH-vur-tee) who is a mathematics teacher for the C Team. She is 26 years old, does lots of hobbies, and had a wonderful interview!

Hi Ms. Laverty! Hi, it's good to be here!

1. What subject do you teach? I teach math.

2. And why did you go into a profession teaching? I became a teacher after I went to college. I worked at Disney World for a little bit, and then I decided to become a destination wedding planner. It sounded fun, but I ended up working at a desk all day. And I realized it wasn't really what I wanted to do for the next 35-40 years of my life. So I did some soul searching, and I found out that teaching was definitely my calling. My mom's a teacher, she's been teaching for like 50 years. I went to Delaware for college before I started to work at Disney World. I started out in teaching, but I switched my major because I thought I didn't want to do it, but then after I did all the stuff I did, I switched back to teaching because I realized I really loved it. 3. Why math? Well, I am actually certified to teach all 4 core subject areas, but math was an opportunity that presented itself for me, and I took it, and I've been loving it ever since!

4. What other hobbies do you enjoy? I have lots of hobbies... I like Disney World and really love sports, like I really love to work out, run, and when I was younger, up until about 2 years ago actually, I played ice hockey. That was a fun hobby! I like to travel... That's important to me. And I like to hang out with my family and my four dogs! Our house is like a circus!

5. What are your suggestions for the next Spirit Wear on Fridays? Hmmm... MisMatched day and definitely around Halloween I think we should do a Costume Day!

6. What is your favorite book and movie? Oh, that's such a hard question! My favorite book is A Dog's Purpose-- it's a really cool book written from a dog's point of view. I CRIED when I read it! I really like Nicholas Spark's books-- he wrote The Notebook and A Walk to Remember, and this summer I read a book called The Girl on the Train. It was really good, it was like a mystery and there was a murder, so it was really cool. And my favorite movie...that's like the hardest question! Well, my favorite Disney movie is The Lion King. My favorite chick flick is The Notebook. And my favorite comedy....I like a lot of comedies. I like the movie This is 40, and I like the movie Train Wreck. I like a lot of comedies!

7. What are you most excited for this month (October), and the new year 2016? Over the next month, my cousin's getting married and I'm really excited for that! That's in Virginia, and I'm her maid of honor so that should be fun. And Halloween. I'm really excited for Halloween! And over the next year...my wedding! I'm so excited! That's next August.

8. Do you run any clubs before or after school? I did last year. I ran an organization called the Media Literacy Program, and it was really fun, it was a big drug and alcohol prevention program. We did a school-wide awareness message, and everyone in the school submitted what they thought our slogan and logo should be, and the whole school voted. The slogan was "Narwhals, Dolphins, Sharks, oh my! Drinking, smoking, drugs, goodbye!" And then we made this really cool thing called a PSA, it's like a commercial that went along with it. It was a lot of work, but it was fun, and the kids really enjoyed it. This year, I can't do any clubs after school because my step kids go to Bradford Heights and Downingtown West, so I have to go pick them up right after school. But I would love to [run a club]! It was a lot of fun last year.

9. What is your favorite animal and your favorite color? My favorite animal is a dolphin! Close second is a dog. I really love Bernese Mountain dogs. We used to have one, but they have very short life spans, but now we have another big, fluffy one. My favorite color.... I'm gonna be girly and just say pink.

10. What is your absolute favorite food or dessert? Oh my gosh...anything chocolate. Seriously. Anything chocolate. I like chocolate cake, chocolate pie, chocolate molten lava cake with ice cream. That's probably my favorite. If it's chocolate, I like it.

11. Lastly, what are three words to describe yourself and your teaching style? Kind, bubbly, and positive. I'm gonna go with that.

I totally agree! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview, Miss Laverty. Yeah, thank you! It was fun, I appreciate it.

The End
